Theres no more reliable engine or power plant to have than cummins diesel power! While a 12v/24v may be heavy, it has the power and torque to pull its own weight thru anything.
It can run forever and on any type of alternative fuel. Theres a guys utube channel I’ve watched that has a buggy/ rock crawler with a rear mounted 12v. Heavily modified with custom oil pan and timing case for clearances.
I don’t recall the name of the guys channel. He builds everything in his garage.
Chassis unlimited had a neat tear bumper tire carrier for second/ third gen dodges that allows either passenger/driver side carry of an over sized tire as well as jerry cans on the other side. I
Dig it but kinda on the fence about what direction i want to go with my rear end, a rear tire carrier would interfere with a 5th wheel goose kneck, same with a rack. Thats mainly the thing thats kept me from going the ‘overland’ look route is having the ability and potential need to tow what ever kind of 5th wheel, goose neck etc. all that goes out the window with a bed rack, pull/ slide out bed organizers or a rear bumper mounted tire carrier.

How do you guys talk about diesel's and overlanding and keep talking about OBS trucks when the Excursion is sitting there in your face. Yes they are older but i would say its a great overlanding base platform. I would worry about anything newer with the emissions if your not running the trucks hard they tend to get build up and offroading can have lots of slow idle trails.

What ever happened to the diesel power challenge?

The weight of a diesel just does not seem right for the off road world. Sinking in the sand/mud, hard to pull out with other rigs, bad front/rear weight ratio, too much weight to ground anchor. Idk, I'm no expert.

I use my diesel excursion for almost strictly off road. Does great, yes its heavy but able to do quite a bit. And very roomy

A diesel for overland ain't to bad it's got pros for sure like fuel range mpg and such plenty of power for hauling. Just depends what your main use is. Off road it can be a con for sure some trails in the northern Rockies your basically idling and rock crawling for hours straight. The heavier diesel engine wears suspension parts and hurts capability quiet a bit. Also modern emissions will have lots of trouble on long slow trails. If doing long slow rough off road trails is your thing gas is probably a better choice. For less weight on the front you could have a gas engine a massive winch and bull bar for protection and a fiberglass topper all for less weight then a totally stock diesel.

@@krispittman1110 id trade my left nut for a diesel excursion 6.0 or 7.3, I have an immaculate 7.3 excursion in my shop right now getting a full service and some goodies and I want it! I just wouldn't use it for anything besides light flat trail over landing. But I'm basing that off of 0 experience off roading them

@@rockie307 I guess a diesel is okay if that's what you have, you love it, and you love overlanding. Build it go have fun. But if you're starting from scratch with the main intention of overlanding I'd argue gas is better suited

@@Bmech1932 do it. The prices are coming down. I just grabbed one in August of last year and am slowly building it out for this intention. However i have thought about the regular v10 for a 4x4 beater. Its a bit of a labor of love right now but cant wait to get it out on the trails with my son. In the middle of front end rebuild right now
