Hand Tools Only: Dovetail Pencil Holder

  • Ever wondered what it's like to build something with zero electricity? I designed and built this dovetailed pencil holder out of some scrap cherry wood using only hand tools.
    I first determined the best size for the pencil holder by studying some other cup-like objects from my home.
    Once I had finished designing the pencil holder, I started the build by dimensioning the rough (very warped) cherry lumber with hand planes, winding sticks, and a marking gauge to get the wood perfectly flat and square on all six sides. Then I re-sawed the wood (sliced through the middle) to yield two thinner pieces. These pieces were used to make the four sides of the pencil holder, plus the bottom panel.
    The sides of the pencil holder are joined with hand cut through dovetails. The bottom panel is floating in a stopped groove, to allow room for it to expand and contract (though expansion wouldn't be an issue with such a small panel). I chose to bevel the edges of the bottom panel both for aesthetic reasons, and because it allows for the groove to be thinner than the bottom panel itself.
    I don't think a woodworker is defined by whether they use only hand tools, some power tools, or even a CNC to build their projects, but I do think that every woodworker should have at least some hand tool experience. It's a little slower, but if done properly it's more precise, and the satisfaction you get from building something the same way it would have been built hundreds of years ago is immense.

    Dude, at 9:46 when you get scared from that vise handle sliding....I can relate so hard to that. I’m a lot less organized than you and usually have tools everywhere (still building my bench) and they roll or fall sometimes and it scares the crap out of me.

    Nice build DK. Do you use Rob’a method for transferring the tails (saw kerf scribe before clearing tail waste)?

    • @dkbuilds
      @dkbuilds  3 роки тому +1

      Thanks Tranq! I'd say 80% of the time I use Rob's method, unless I'm making some construction-grade drawers when I don't care about being so precise; then I just mark with a pencil because it's a good bit faster.

    • @TheTranq
      @TheTranq 3 роки тому

      @@dkbuilds Cool good to know! Where I’ve been struggling is setting my marking gauge to the exact kerf of the blade. How do you do this step accurately/repeatably?

    • @dkbuilds
      @dkbuilds  3 роки тому +1

      @@TheTranq I lay the dovetail saw along the side of my plane and let the marking gauge drop onto the metal of the plane, which is what Rob does. It works pretty well for me but I agree it's finicky. One point is that when you are shifting the tail board left or right, you should reference off of the same surface of the tail board (to shift the tail board left you press the marking gauge knife on the pin board below and shift the tail board until it hits the shoulder of the marking gauge, to shift right you press the marking gauge shoulder on the pin board and shift the tail board until it hits the marking gauge knife). Hope that made some sense. But, I agree, that's the hardest part. You can also try skipping the marking gauge all together here and just use the kerf-width marking knife to shift the tail board left or right (using your fingertips to gauge flush). Do you use a skew block plane to cut a shoulder on the tail board to help hold it firmly against the pin board while you transfer the lines? I don't and that's where I struggle the most (need to buy a skew block plane with a fence).

    • @TheTranq
      @TheTranq 3 роки тому

      @@dkbuilds Yup and the tough thing with that is getting the marking gauge shoulder to balance on the “set” of the teeth to make sure you’re actually measuring the full width of the blade. I saw some people saying to try using feeler gauges to get the kerf thickness and use that to set the gauge which is what I’ll try next. It’s funny you mention that because I just ordered and received my Veritas skew rabbet plane for doing exactly that! I was using the table saw to put the slight rabbet but wanted to be able to just take a few shavings with the plane. I have still been getting used to setting it up and using it

    @woodfather 3 роки тому +1

    Beautiful, I'm planning to make something similar in a couple weeks, though without the hand flattening steps!
    With your joints, you clearly marked the entire length of the wood, but in the final piece I don't see marks between the pins/tails, I guess you sand them all out?
    Do you take that into consideration when deciding the wood thickness at the start? For context - I'm practicing a #dailydovetail, but I don't like seeing the layout line on the final result, so I've been trying to use a knife to only mark the sections which will be removed - should I just be marking the whole joint in one shot and then sanding/planing smooth?
    I'm sure that question makes no sense sorry 😆, good job, looks great!

    • @dkbuilds
      @dkbuilds  3 роки тому +1

      In general, if you are cutting tails first (like I do), you use a pencil or pen to mark the tails to help guide your sawing. Then once the tails are cut, to transfer the shape of the tails onto the pinboard you can use a knife (to be the most precise) or a sharp pencil. Almost always once the joint is fully assembled and the glue is dried, you use a hand plane to take a very thin shaving off of the outside of all surfaces, which will "erase" any pencil marks. You don't need to take this into account for the thickness when making the joint at all. After you take a few thin plane shavings off of the assembled joint it will technically make the boards slightly thinner, but in general this doesn't matter and will be such a small change that it would be difficult to even measure :)
      Hope that helps, and good luck!

      Hey Ellen, that sounds like a great idea! Honestly how long it takes depends a LOT on how high quality you want to make it, and the level of expertise of the craftsperson. This (without filming) would probably take me 3-4 hours. If I were a novice it would take me maybe 8 hours because I would probably make some mistakes and have to start fresh. If I used a simpler joint other than hand cut dovetails I could do it much faster, and if I used power tools, faster still. Hope that helps!

    Which router plane do you use? I am looking for a new one and the Veritas planes are constantly sold out.

      I use the Lie Nielsen small router plane, I really like it. Here I am using a different narrower blade than the one it comes with. www.lie-nielsen.com/products/small-router-plane
