Me giving the gift: "I hope you like it! Also there's a massive split right here that you probably wouldn't have noticed if I hadn't told you about it just now." 😂
And this is why you should use liquid hide glue. Especially when working with dovetail joinery. After your mistake, you would have spritzed a little warm water on the joint and gently undone the joints without pounding it with a mallet. Then you would have taken a break and come back relaxed, applied some warm water on the old glue and put new glue on top, with no need to remove the old glue (it sticks to itself, unlike other glues). And you would have saved a lot of trouble sanding away the squeeze out mess, because it doesn't interfere with finishes. Order yourself some Old Brown Glue and you'll never feel glue-up anxiety again. Great video and great build!
Lol, I love the way you get faster and faster trying to get it all together before the glue goes off after the cock up. Well done for filming and showing it all. Good recovery. Turned into a great looking box with some nice design features.
Great job.I think it’s great That you didn’t cut the mistake out of the video. That gives many amateurs a feeling of „thanks God he’s mortal, maybe I can do that too“ great job and good editing, without annoying music or useless long sequences.I enjoyed watching.Keep it up
Welcome. And if someone is going to copy your project,he knows how to deal with this problem, when it happens to them.I really like the community of makers, that help people having fun with their hobby, cause I think it’s way more healthy than playing ego shooters online, all the day.
From very careful and calm, like a handcrafter knowing what he is doing, to PAAAAANIC before the glue dries, a deep "pheeeew" after the recovery, back to a calm and careful handcrafter. Very nice project indeed.
The glue up was hard to watch; I could feel the stress levels mounting at this end. In the end the box turned out beautifully; lovely wood; perfect joints, and a great design. Thanks for sharing your ideas and obvious skills with us. Best wishes. :)
Seeing the title of a jewelry box being made, I was iffy. I was blown away of very little power tools used to make it and how it came out perfect. Great craftsmanship! I'm jealous!
That’s a fantastic jewellery box. Didn’t know you could plane the wide face of timber like you did with a hand plane. Great job, thanks for posting so we can see how it should be done.
Any serious woodworker becomes a master through mistakes. Perfection is reached by overcoming obstacles. Very nice of you to share moments like these. Joy comes through the journey. Thanks.
I totally agree. I'm not sure I'll ever reach perfection but each obstacle overcome represents a lesson learned that gets me closer. Thanks for sharing Rick.
Being a retired Orthopaedic Surgeon, I enjoyed watching you. I know very well that feeling of the upcoming disaster and the agony to anticipate it! I foresee a brilliant future for you! Greetings from mount Olympus, Macedonia, Greece!
Well, I'm OK. I didn't break down and need therapy or anything. But, I just imagined myself at that moment and know it would have been a problem for me.
I absolutely LOVE the fact that you didn't hide the splitting of that board. Who knows how bad you actually lost your sh*t though lol. I've been teaching myself dovetails for the past few weeks, and I've gotta tell you, I would have had to start the whole thing over before seeing this video. You see all the big wig woodworkers, and their projects always seem to work out perfectly on the first try. I feel that's never the case, and gives a false sense of how it should be done. Mistakes should be shown. How they are looked at and corrected is a huge part of learning the art of woodworking. Hella nice box btw. The dovetails... Superb. 👏 Bravo!
I noticed the hockey tape on your clamps, which confirms that we know the same person who teaches these excellent methods, and more importantly the ways of thinking about the work. In the end, this way of looking at the work migrates into how we look at so much beyond just woodworking. At some point we come to understanding that there is very little we can't fix or can't make, and that realization allows us to approach both the work and life with a much healthier attitude. Or at least that's what it's done for me. Merry Christmas!
I couldn't agree more with your comment Laurence. Learning that there is little I can't fix or can't make has totally changed my world view in the past 10 years or so. I appreciate you taking the time to type out your thoughts. Hope you had a happy holidays!
Beautiful piece, absolutely lovely. I am sure that neither you nor your wife will ever forget the time and circumstances around the making and giving of this cabinet. Thank you for sharing the process with us. And for reminding me just how stressful a glue-up can be!
This is one of the most enjoyable woodworking videos I have watched. That you very much for sharing so much of the project. A fantastic result. I wish I had just 10% of your skills.
That came out terrific! I admire your dedication to hand tools 😄 I don't think there's a woodworker alive who hasn't had a glue up go terribly awry! The important thing is you fixed it. Woodworking has much to do with being able to hide f*ck ups as anything else. Love the shooting board as much as you do 😉 Thanks for sharing!
Fantastic work ! I love the fact that you don't hide the mistakes, and how you fix them, the truth is the proof of a real good woodworker. Thanks for this share and congrats for this relaxing video without boring music and useless words, tools noises are a music !
Haha sorry to make you feel stressed Adam! Glad you liked the video. I will keep making videos in the future, always showing my mistakes in the hopes it will teach others not to make the same ones!
Thanks Duke! Yeah I actually did lots of mockups, practice runs, even wrote down the order in which I should glue things up. Then, I uncapped the glue bottle and my IQ immediately dropped by 50. Hopefully I'll get it right on the first try next time!
Thanks so much Matthew, I'm glad all my hard work in video production is worth it. I was sweating every time I had to re-watch the glue up scene while editing... I must have watched it 20 times now. Probably took a few days off my life!
Nice build, and great video. Loved that look at the camera at 13:20 - when you’ve done all you can do to patch up your own mistakes, and the only thing left is to hope, and wait for the glue to dry. Been there.
The quality content I subscribed for. Another beautiful project and dont be afraid to include occasional mistakes! It's actually more encouraging seeing someone make a mistake and recover from it than never making mistakes at all.

Nice job, thanks for share this video 👌
While I miss your voice overs I do like this style. My only suggestion would be to add close captions explaining what you are doing in each step.
Beautiful video! I'm making a dovetail jewelry box too .... your video will help me not make mistakes!
☺☺☺👍👍👍👍
Can you tell me what is the wood and the finish used?
Love how you filmed this , no music, just the relaxing sounds of some fine woodworking
Awesome thanks Kadeer! I'll definitely be trying to stick to this format for future videos.

Thank you Sophie! I'll sure to tell her you think so 😆
Nice to see the combo of hand tools and machinery used, where appropriate to quickly achieve precise results, while saving muscle labor.
Awesome, I'm glad you like my style Zircon! That is exactly my goal. Save time on tedious stuff with power tools, use hand tools for the fun stuff :)
