Mad vs. ouch: Imagine he is actually able to distinguish degrees of hurt feelings, like the distinction between a mild annoyance at being hungry vs. a deeper emotional pain he may feel when he is being left alone or feels ignored. That would be supremely interesting.
A friend of mine has a cat that, when being ignored said "happy ouch." To communicate that it was hurting her feelings!
Our pets absolutely experience emotions. And I would say they are more intense than ours, in the way that a toddler feels intense emotion; bursting into tears and then laughing the next. But I think cats are more like hormonal teenagers who feel everything with intensity and if they could slam doors they certainly would.
In talking pet videos I've seen "love you" used not only for "please", but for "thank you", and even "sorry!"
Interesting ... seems like something a toddler would do too.
Glad my pet is not the only one using 'love you' as a way to butter us up XD
I would like to know if they understand that concept. Like... Also the difference between "please" and "love you".
My now deceased cats did know the meaning of the word "sorry". Sometimes something would accidentally happen and I'd startle or hurt them. At that time I would go "oh my, i'm so sorry, sorry, sorry, sorry *pet's name*", vocally exaggerated, making a bit of a show out of it and picking them up, kissing them and keep saying sorry.
After the first time they already started to understand. At the second time I could notice that by their response: instead of running away, which they would instinctively do immediately, they would start that process but the moment they'd hear me say sorry, they'd stop and I could see it in their eyes... wondering if I/it really means what they suspected. At the third time they'd be aware and not even run anymore. They'd just understand immediately that I wasn't doing something on purpose or wasn't angry and clearly accepted the apology. Instead of running away they'd just be startled but they'd stay put and look at me and/or turn towards me to give me attention or a hug. As if to say: dude, no problem. I get it was an accident, here... Have some kisses, I'm also not angry at you nor scared for hurting me.
And since it hardly ever happens that such an accident occurs, there's very much time in between such events. Yet they'd remember. Clearly. I suspect bthe associated emotions of first feeling startled or pain and then relief when realising noone is out to hurt them, quite the opposite, so the feeling of relieve, helps to imprint on them just as much as it does on us humans when we were small.
I'm a tall strong guy and move quite fast and decisively so a normal movement for me is a hell of a kick or punch when such a soft small, light animal accidentally is in the way. It didn't happen much but when it did I really felt bad and I absolutely would let them know that it was a mistake and that I loved them. They responded in kind.
With so many things too... Like when I couldn't get to sleep. One cat had figured out that I liked her purring. So after she lived with me for a while she became my pillow, sort of. Every evening when I turned the lights of, even if we were already cuddling in bed, she'd move to my pillow, gently push me aside a bit, I'd lift my head, she'd get comfy and I'd lay down my head on top of her. She would purr me to sleep. Next morning she would be snuggled up against my chest or belly.
I really would have loved to teach her many buttons.

If you've ever been a pet parent you know your pets have emotions, maybe not emotional control/discipline but they definitely have feelings, and if you're a good pet parent, you know they love you.

We have twin cats!! Mine is currently 8kg. Was a feral boy that was very hungry. He is now a desexed gentleman. Also. Love those eyes. Wow!! Yours. Not the cats!

I had one question -- You mention around 2:40:00 that when adding the "mad" button, you modeled it. What did you do to model mad?
Thank you tons -- Because of your paw targeting video, our cat started using buttons. He now has 25 and our other cat learned to use those buttons from him! We cannot thank you enough!

RE: Ouch button.. well when you're talkin about he presses it when he gets his feelings hurt think about it when someone hurts your feelings it is ouchie you feel it maybe in your chest in your belly it is a very heavy feeling, energy drawing downward Sinking Feeling
we talked about that in yoga as well as when we are teaching mindfulness to kids in school where are you feeling these emotions and what do they feel like in your body ? so that makes total sense that they would press ouch if their feelings got hurt.... so really he was smart pressing that to show his emotions "hurt"
Q: Does he understand the language (English) or does he associate a button with an action. like 'outside' button with going outside but not understanding or caring about the voice?
In such a case, what would happen if you switch buttons around (like say the outside button with another button). Will he quickly know to press the right button (from the sound) or will he insist on pressing on what was the 'outside' button?

You may not know, but I have two questions.
1) Could talking pets be viable if we both work full time?
2) Do you think it's still possible with 2 cats learning at the same time?
Yes & yes! Working from home definitely makes it easier, but Justin usually sleeps the majority of the time I’m working anyway- as long as you model as much as you can when you’re home, you should be good. There are quite a few multi-cat households learning- you can train them together or separately! It’s common for them to learn at different speeds & show different levels of interest.

I would LOVE it if you would please do a video on teaching multiple pets to talk and/or a video on when it is appropriate to start teaching them. For example, is it too early to start this with a kitten that is 5 months old?
Just my 2 cents - I can’t imagine it would be harmful to start sooner rather than later. It’s definitely easier for humans to learn another language as infants, so I think it could make sense with kittens too! I suspect, depending on their size, you may have some trouble with button activation until they get a bit older and heavier. Regardless, you talking to them consistently (always calling petting them the same thing, just general language consistency and introducing concepts verbally, etc) and having the buttons around for them to get used to certainly can’t hurt.
I've been wondering what happens when a communicative cat like Justin get a new kitty sibling... does the new cat learn the buttons from the first cat or does it require human interaction? I've not found any examples yet, but it's a curious question about their learning process.

Thanks so much for your videos!! Do you have any tips or thoughts about differentiating between "ouch" and "sad"? You say that Justin has used "ouch" when he's feeling like he needs more attention - did you transition that focus to a "sad" button at all?
Can you teach us how to identify and communicate our emotions too? I keep hearing that feeling your feelings and being comfortable with expressing them is supposed to be good for us or something.
Yes. Cats have emotions, similar brain stem, other brain structures, wiring and chemical signaling as humans and other mammals. We just have more advanced thinking capacity. Humans need to unlearn some misguided prejudices and love true hearted animals more.
My beloved pet would have needed a button for “shrimp”! 😻
Great videos!! How do you teach them their names and yours?
I love your training videos. However, my dog does not use the buttons except her outside button and her puzzle button which has treats in it. She is crazy about our cats and I have seen her looking for them, but she doesn't use the buttons. One hisses at her and I say cat mad and model the button. She gets excited about her play button but does not use it. We have been learning for about 12 months but it is a one way convo. Any suggestions?
When they're proficient button-pressers, do they experimentally press new buttons that you add to try and deliberately expand their vocabulary?
I have a question. So I'm using the multi colored buttons from Amazon with my orange boy and I was wondering if my cat would get confused having two of same colored button for two different things.

How do you add words? I bought the starter kit with 5 words. Going to start with 2 and then all done. But how do you add after that? To the board or next to the action like at the beginning with outside by the door?
Depends on how well they are using buttons in general. If you're still teaching then in the location for meaning, but if the pet is using buttons competently already then add them to the sound board.
I don't know for a fact, that's just my understanding from the other video she made.

Hi Sarah, I have a bit of a complicated question for you and I’m not entirely sure if it’s even possible.
I’m training my cat to speak and he’s doing really well in his learning. He can identify certain people by names and has now learned that he can basically “summon” whoever he wants by pressing their button. My parents live literally just across the street from my house so it’s easy to call my parents over or have my cat go to them whenever he misses them.
I’ll try not to make this too morbid, but unfortunately, my step-dad recently died. He’s referenced by a button that says “Pea-Pa” and my cat keeps pressing it and we’re not entirely sure how to convey this heavy message to our cat. We’ve considered removing the button entirely but I feel this will just frustrate and confuse him. Lately, we’ve just been clicking “Pea-Pa” and “ouch” along with “Pea-Pa” and “All Done” soon afterwards. We only do this whenever he’s asking about my step-dad.
I know that cats are smart enough to understand death on their own terms. The struggle is just communicating that to them in a matter that he’d be most receptive to. Do you know if there’s another way to teach them the word “never” or “away” or would this be the right path?
Hi there - I’m so sorry for your loss :( This is a topic I’ve thought about but thankfully haven’t had to experience with Justin. I don’t think there’s any one answer, and it sounds like you’re already handling it well. I agree it’s the right call to keep the button around as long as it’s still being used.
My only thought is - have you introduced “bye bye” yet? Makes me teary to think about in this context, but it’s a simple concept to teach - you can press it whenever you or someone else leaves the house, and you can add names for context - for example, when I leave I say “mom bye bye”. I introduced it at the same time as “hi” for contrast, which I use when I come home.
While it doesn’t cover the permanence, it conveys that a person isn’t around - and I think over time, the requests will slow down. Now might be a good time to add a “sad” button as well if you think he’s noticing family members being upset. I wish there were a better way we could explain it to our pets - I hope that helps 💕
How did you teach names? Like pointing to yourself for “mom” or pointing to Justin and saying “Justin”?
I'm pretty sure cats know their own names within 24 hours.
Hello! Can you tell me if it would be functional to a french cat? Because i don't say food for example i say "croquette"... Is it too difficult with two la'gage ? Should i talk english to my cat 😅?
I’d think whatever language you speak to him most often in makes sense. Even if some words are English and some are French, he wouldn’t know they were different languages. I would just try to not say the same word in both languages. So if you say “croquette” for food, don’t also try to teach him “food” just stick to one. But then if you wanted to teach him “all done” in English, I think that would be fine. I hope this makes sense. I don’t have any experience but this is what makes sense to me
I see this question a lot. There's literally no reason why your buttons wouldn't be the language your pet has heard its whole life. The language you speak with your cat, it already knows, and if you live in the house with other humans, it hears you talk to each other. Why would you think buttons need to be in English?!
For me, I'm from the UK, we don't say 'pets'. So I wouldn't now introduce something they've never heard before. We don't say 'closet' we say 'cupboard' so the cat has a button saying cupboard when she wants me to open it. Also, my cats know 'finished' as 'stop doing that now', so I'm not going to use 'all done', I'm going to use 'finished'.
As you progress building vocabulary you will introduce words that come up naturally. So just choose what's natural. You clearly have very good English, so if you mix languages up in natural speech then you can use different words. I speak Chinese as well, so sometimes I speak to the cats in Chinese because a lot of things are quicker and simpler in Chinese than in English, so for some phrases, I could use the button with the Chinese phrase if that's what the cat is used to already.

You don't have to be a scientist to use the scientific method.. And you used it correctly, to get to the conclusion that you don't really know, and you can't really have any way to tell, so you went with a better safe than sorry.
