What a mess, but St Mike saved the day, through years of knowledge and hands on experience, and a little good luck . As a now semi-retired full time service tech for 31 years with a national company, not in your industry but a related one, I can totally appreciate when you walk into something you hate to even touch, knowing what could happen that now you have to fix as well, once you start the actual repair. That’s even worse when it’s installed incorrectly from the start. Nice work my friend.
Wow… I have to admit your comment has probably been, is likely the most meaningful comment that I’ve received and read in a very long time. Wow. Thank you so much for letting me know that I’m not the only one insane enough to do what I do. Not that I really mean it that way, but it kind of makes me feel good that one day in the future. I will also be semi retired and probably watching someone else a few years Younger than me m, doing what I did so proudly for so many years.
Sweet repair Mikey 👍👍 Reminds me of emergency repairs in my refinery at 02:30 in 18° weather cursing at 70 year old piping and using 48” pipe wrenches with Kroil praying it would come apart 🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️
I love looking at your jobs and I am trying to lorn as much from you. Because you are well experienced in what you are doing. Need someone like you to do some heating for me.
You have a well stocked truck, used to work for a company that provided everything I wood need in the middle of the night. Now I have to make it work with barely nothing on the truck. Have to sit back and think how I can make it work with limited fittings.
It sucks when one issue becomes multiple issues. We have all suffered that pain. I wish our tradesmen in our town added as much value on every call. Valve tags, training, and a combustion analysis. If you aren't testing, you're guessing! Somebody we know always says that. It's still true.
I made the mini sawzall blade many times. Funny enough the little M12 band saw can cut the back side of a sawzall blade. I think they only harden the teeth. I love that idea of throwing a union in there when you have a question about a set of threads. I welded 1/2 in socket extension to all of my pipe taps so I can run them in with the big big DeWalt impact gun. Couple months ago I tapped a 2-in hole in 6-in cast iron for a laundry drain and did it with the dcf900 DeWalt impact.
yeah, the teeth are the hardest part of the blades, even more so if they're carbide teeth, as it's small carbide teeth welded in place on more mild steel. also why they don't like being flexed much, unlike regular blades you can radius bend while in use. otherwise the carbide teeth shatter and break off or it's stiff enough it breaks the shank at saw end connection. it sucks breaking $30 blades.
Hey Mikey, Isn't it so frustrating to finish up and think you got it all set and then something else leaks? It was also surprising that when you used the hammer and chisel to remove the 3/4" nipple that broke off, that the 1-1"4" nipple didn't break off as well, since although not noticing, it was weak and rotted too. I've been there a million times myself, so i know the feeling! 😬
Copper above the water line like that also voids the warranty on all brands because the expansion and contraction pulls the sections apart. Ask me how I learned that fun fact...
Boy that guy sounds just like me didn't know there was someone else like me my Dad Died years ago from cancer at the age of 56 then one of my Aunts she was 41 she died in the year 2000 of cancer my moms younger sister then in 2022 my Mom she was 71 of cancer Now my moms other sister she is 73 she has kidney cancer has to have one removed but the good kidney only at 40 percent so yea it's crazy cancer has wiped out pretty much my whole family it for sure sucks
Hey Mike. That was ugly. I'm a big dude if I can't crack a pipe out of a fitting I use a small Coleman torch and I heat up the female end to expand it and I hit the male end with WD to cool it off and it works 100% of the time.
and that is why hex bushings are best left at the hardware store and in bins to *never* be used. 🤣 their favorite game is becoming brittle and snapping off and often when bumped or shock loaded. no need to ask how I know that!

I was like “OH OH- I KNOW A TRICK FOR THIS!!” little did I know so many people knew this 😂 or even have the finesse to do this
👍
What a mess! Nice repair!
Good idea of installing that union. Made your life easier. Looks like they used type " L " tubing on the steam pipes. Expensive install, even for then
sometimes it is easier to change all the fitting out at once.

The bigger story with holtermann bakery is not Whoopi but why did they not have a maintenance plan with Mikey Pipes

my eyes said that was guaranteed to happen, as soon as he showed it the first time.

Nice Fix Mike! Not an easy one by any means!
It’s always a challenge to fix a steam leak!
Nice work
Thanks
You got lucky Mikey every one I touch just crumbles all the way to the boiler
Grind sawsall blade to size. I've done that 😂
What hack installed the copper on the boiler above the water line?
Hacks bring me stack’s?
Great repair, what do you consider the right water chemistry,
Kroil free

A 75 gallon water heater would be great if you like baths or have a jacuzzi.
yeah and lots of older folks love to take a bath in their giant clawfoot cast iron tubs. mostly around here they do series or parallel 40's instead.
Ain't nothing easy about needing an Ez Out.

Anyone recommend someone who has worked on a gas steam boiler in New Jersey? Can’t seem to find anyone that knows these boilers.
If you're in north Jersey, Ken Ciesla is a steam nerd. Definitely worth looking him up.
@ thank you. I am in north jersey so I will definitely look him up. Appreciate it.
