@@matxalenc8410it makes sense because if you have been through that much trauma since a young age, all you see around you is murder, drug addicts, poverty, etc. He lost his parents at an early age and being raised by elderly people is not the same as being raised by your actual parents. Plus they were old and the only family he really had and I’m sure they wouldn’t live much longer. He probably felt alone, confused, abandoned and thought what do I have to look forward to in life or live for. Yeah, I can totally understand why he didn’t know whether living was actually better than dying.

I felt horrible when Shareef died. He wasn’t even in the streets or up to Caine’s shenanigans. Prime example of “watch the company you keep”. Some people can really bring darkness directly into your life. As for Caine- it’s a shame he didn’t learn his lesson until it was too late. Had his whole life ahead of him and it ended so quickly

Never understood why everyone in the movie kinda celebrates Caine and tells him he has so much potential to live up to. I mean sure, every person breathing has potential, but Caine specifically wasn't shit! He wasn't working, he was running the streets, and was happy to be about that hood life. In many ways, he was worse than most people he was hanging with, so not sure why so many thought the world of him.

In street terms, Caine would be considered “good” since he was mostly about getting money and not about gunplay unless he had to. People like Caine can usually walk away from the streets and start over at some point. Guys like O-Dog and Wax on the other hand, the streets really is them. Those types will change only after doing some serious time. They usually have to go and joce for like 20-30 years.

    I think Caine was depressed.
I doubt he wanted to live, otherwise he would’ve never put himself in those situations. Caine had opportunities to leave (that’s more than what most people have). People who value their own life don’t give an answer “I don’t know” to the question “do you care if you live or die?”. He was passively suicidal at that point.

I think the UA-camr missed tbe likely effects of Cain's childhood, raise in a toxic situation from birth, his father killed at the age of 10, and his mother dead from an overdose after that. A real person would need more than loving grandparents, a couple positive friends, and a couple of speeches from a friend's dad. A real person would need therapy. But most black Americans don't have access to it, and many don't even believe in it. Many of us still carry on the authoritarianism that was imposed on our ancestors by enslavers. Many of us tell our children to get right, or we're going to punish them - and that's it. No display of love or empathy. And lots of kids today are still getting beaten.
Cain needed a professional to help him deal with his negative feelings and his past and ongoing negative experiences. People who've had a significantly easier life have acted out and engaged in self-destructive behavior as an adult and/or as a child. And as a society, we need to do more than tell people what to do and what not to do. People with mental health issues (which is allmost everyone) need access to good, affordable (or free) mental health treatment.

This is another movie i saw at the $1.50 movie theater twice when i was a kid. I hated Caine died & i wanted him to make it out of the hood. The lesson of this movie is everything catches up with you in the end. Rewatching this as an adult i realized that Caine was doing too much & the movie did a great job of making him look like the protagonist. O-Dogg was a dumbass because he was showing off the robbery tape like it was a sports reel. I don’t think Illena was pregnant, she pretended to be in order to trap Caine. Samuel Monroe Jr. is the eternal typecast. If you look up the word typecast in the dictionary you’ll see his picture. Fun Facts: Prior to this movie Tyrin Turner was in Janet Jackson’s Rhythm Nation Video, In Living Color, Michael Jordan’s Come Fly With Me home video, Deep Cover & Hangin With Mr. Cooper. Larenz Tate appeared on Matlock, Amen, The Wonder Years, The Women Of Brewster Place, New Attitude, The Royal Family, You Take The Kids & The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. Caine’s grandparents were played by the late Marilyn Coleman & the late Arnold Johnson. Marilyn Johnson appeared on Good Times, Which Way Is Up, The Five Heartbeats & Meteor Man. Arnold Johnson appeared on Sanford & Son, Good Times, The Jeffersons, A Hero Ain’t Nothing But A Sandwich, Shaft, Family Matters & The Five Heartbeats. The late 2Pac was supposed to play Sharif. He was upset because there was no back story on how Sharif coverted to Islam & he wanted to play O-Dogg instead & he assaulted The Hughes Brothers & bragged about it on Yo! MTV Raps. Spice-1 was supposed to play Caine & MC Ren was supposed to play A-Wax but covered to Islam. MC Eiht & Clifton Powell did voiceovers on GTA: San Andreas. Next weeks review is Bones.

I was a wife and mother by 21 and barely navigating life because my grandmother had passed and my mom was still living her best crack life. Daddy had OD at 33, when I was 15. Not to mention, I had to grow up early to work and help with my younger siblings. I refused to become a victim of my environment and circumstances. My imagination was fueled by a relentless drive.
I hate not being raised by my parents. I’m thankful for my grandparents who did. They all left me early in life. However, the wisdom from my grandparents and lived experiences (some traumatic) of my parents equipped me for my journey. You couldn’t have told me thirty years later, I’d earned my PhD. To God be all of the glory. Talking about life going full circle. The stories I share with my mentees 🙏🏽❤️

I've watched this so many times and noticed how lost Caine looked lost especially when his granddaddy asked if he cared if he lived or died?
That was too real! I love the soundtrack to the movie too. Also Clifton Powell is a very overlooked actor. Give him his flowers! Great commentary! I think you should do a commentary on Why Do Fools Fall in Love, since you're on fire with the Larenz Tate flicks! Also, have you seen The Corner, it's a miniseries that aired on HBO in 2000, Charles Dutton directed it and it stars T.K. Carter, Tasha Smith, Glen Plummer and Kandi Alexander. It's set in Maryland and they say it's a prequel to The Wire. You can find it on here.

  • @HeShoeTooBig
    @HeShoeTooBig 10 місяців тому +8

Watching this movie as an adult, you really can see Caine isn't a great person. it feels like everyone see's him as this great guy to be around and worth helping etc. But he never does anything special. He honestly doesn't seem to have any potential either. It seems like his greatest accomplishment is graduating high school. It's like he's hopeless and on auto pilot...which...is extremely scary for how realistic he is. Like...he's not some super hero, not a legendary gangster, not a crazy fighter, not super smart or bright. he's a very realistic person you'd see in the hood making so many wrong choices. He's not exactly evil, but he's also not good.
like, in his last moments he's trying to make sure the kid isn't hurt. That's like his instincts kicking in. But i wonder...that man he robs in the car...would Caine have killed him if that man decided to fight back like his cousin Harold? Would Caine have become truly evil like O-Dogg? Without this scene, we could say Caine is most good. Most good people would want revenge for killing their cousin in front of them, so you can empathize with him still. But the robbery scene shows he's not purely good.
Also, based on what Shareef says about the girl, and considering the integrity of Shareef, I believe Caine really did use a condom with that girl. She slept with some other guy and decided Caine should be the father because he was the best option for her situation. It's extremely common for certain women to do that. Sot hat adds a whole new layer to the situation that revolves arounds his death.
I also wish the movie didn't gloss over the fact that O-Dogg is arrested at the end. If you watch the ending during the constant fades to black, you see O-Dogg wearing the same clothes getting arrested at night. If you watch the trailer for the movie, you see some deleted Scenes of Stacy and Ronnie talking to the police at night (the same time and location O-Dogg is being arrested). There's cops all over the scene and it's showing Anthony (the kid) sitting on the porch crying because of what happened. I really want to watch a cut of this movie with all the scenes restored.

I hadn't watched this movie in several years, but the last time I did, one scene stood out to me. After visiting Purnell in prison, O-Dogg was acting like O-Dogg, teasing and pretending to be some stranger who was gonna off him. Caine was sick of his childishness, and he was gonna open up about how Purnell spoke to him. Then, Ilena's cousin pulled up, and Caine reverted back to his destructive behavior. I actually think that Purnell was the one that got to him for a brief period. Especially when considering that Caine avoided him for so long, and seeing him in that state made him realize he was bound to become his mentor or even worse that made him snap into reality, for a moment. But Caine couldn't get out of his own way long enough to where he could've saved his own life, and those around him (he likely would've ended up locked up still, but he wouldn't be dead. And neither Sharif).

The reason the ending is so sad to me is not only does it show how the consequences always catch up to you if you decide to live that life but it also shows subtly the cycle that is perpetuated by violence. Cain tried to leave but in his last act, chose to save the kid's life, but that kid then witnessed a whole massacre and will be scarred for the rest of his life and he now has a greater chance of growing up cold too.

Despite all the warning and invitations from Ronnie and his friends to leave I never felt like Cain would.
Cain himself has a very fatalistic outlook because of his parents fates, systematic oppression, etc. I don’t think he believes in free will at all. His destiny is preordained to him. Whats even more messed up is he’s ok with it. He doesn’t valued his life until it flashes before his eyes.
When talking about Atlanta, he says “I’m still going to be black in Atlanta.” He’s right all of his problems won’t disappear because he’s in a new environment. But it could work.
The whole movie has this theme of fate and life being predetermined from birth.

This is one of my favorite hood movies fr but Caine was def wilding in this movie and so were most of the people around him or who were around him when he was a kid. But like you explained, he didn’t listen to the people who had his best interest at heart and that’s one of the reasons he ended up being murdered. This movie basically showed us that our decisions have consequences which is another thing about Menace that I like. They weren’t glorifying street shit even tho some people make it seem like that’s what this movie was doing.
But this just some facts about the movie I read a while ago, O-Dog was 16 and Caine was 18 (according to the script). Ilena was lying about being pregnant (from what The Hughes Brothers said). Ronnie was 24 (according to the script). And actually A-Wax dies with Caine and Sharif at the end in the script. But I loved your review of this and you was def speaking facts the whole time 🗣️
