Had to watch as soon as this dropped! Lessons from this movie: 1. Go to college. If the choice is a whole war and college, take the college! 2. Use protection 3. And never plan a caper that involves Bookeem Woodbine. This (and Jason's Lyric) show you as soon as he's on the plan, it will fail!!

This term is thrown around a lot but watching this movie made me realize Larenz Tate has range. He went from playing a psychopath to a nurturing, but naive boy, to a man coming back from war that has not only affected him, but those around him like his friends and the mother of his kids. This breakdown made me realize how bad veterans of color are treated when they serve and return home. My grandfather and uncle both served in Vietnam and became addicted to drugs after they came home because they couldn’t find work anywhere.
You know, there was one concussion expert who was talking about Power Slap, a slap fighting promotion created by Dana White, the president of the UFC. That expert had a sentence that relates the situation of soldiers who have to go and fight wars for people who stay on the backseat: "It reminds us that people who don’t take the risks often exploit those who do."
Vietnam war veterans were treated the worse out of any other generation, especially when the public opinion of the war changed. The movie shows the parallel between the judge (WW2 vet) to the rest of the vast who were in Vietnam.

How coming home can be really hard for these military people especially at that timeframe. I don’t know about now.

- "Why do black people have to have their own awards?" Because our work is never recognized by the mainstream, that's way. This was a film of Oscar caliber and I don't even know anybody white who has HEARD of it. - Chris Tucker kept more millennials off drugs than Nancy Reagan and D.A.R.E. ever did. "My boss man Cutty...he used to tap that ass while you was over in 'Nam". 😂😂😂 The music from that car scene is Isaac Hayes' The Look of Love. Great music placement
This movie is deep! I feel Anthony’s pain. Joining the military was one of the best decisions I ever made. But I still had to get an education and look for a civilian career. I almost made some bad choices but I was able to overcome that.
@r0mediddy Thank you for your service. I remember seeing this movie as a kid before I skai went into the service. This movie reminds me how things could've went had I made the wrong decisions post military. I now have my cdl and transport hazmat now.
Great movie. @8:30 Skip messed up in college and got drafted into the marines. At that time they didn’t have a choice. Anthony was the only one who volunteered to go but he would have been drafted eventually too. And a few dudes were like Anthony, not thinking about their family back home because a distraction like that could get them killed. He probably stayed in touch with Kirby because Kirby had been to war as well and could give Anthony advice. Anthony’s mom was asking dumb questions like “What did you do?” “Well mom, I almost got my head blown off numerous times. And this one guy got his 🍆 chopped off and shoved in his mouth…pass the salt please.” 😏😂
Seen this movie 100x growing up. Was one of me and my pops favorites to watch on VHS. Just recently learned this is partially based on a true story. The guy Anthony based on did like 7 years for the robbery, got out and became a preacher
15:06 Not to mention, in Ashanti’s “Rain On Me” video, this song was sampled, they recreated this scene (to some degree) and Lorenz Tate played her jealous, abusive, cheating boyfriend
As a Veteran, I love this movie, and I accept all its flaws. I really wanted Anthony to have a happy ending. I know the feeling of getting out of the service, only to feel like a fish out of water.
Skip didn't have a STI. he had "Agent Orange". Look it up. It's very interesting. And, here's a Fun Fact. The guy that gave Anthony the flier played Stacey on Menace to Society.
Hi. I don't think Anthony had anger issues after the war. He had experienced a lot of traumatic events and death. His anger in instances where he lost his temper was with merit. Anthony needed a good-paying job and therapy. Where was the support for black soldiers and their families? While I understand your viewpoint on Anthony attending college, it may not have been the better choice for him. I assume he may have been average in H.S. The thought of pursuing higher education may have been overwhelming to him. Black children who've grown up in disadvantaged neighborhoods aren't exposed to different places, people, and cultures. War is war. But look at the conditions he grew up in. He was raised in a two-parent household with good morals and values. That didn't change the harsh conditions that existed outside his home. As Judge Greg Mathis says, "You had to make do."
This movie right here stayed with me for a long time but I have been binging your videos!!! You do an amazing job!!! And I definitely agree with all you said, he shoulda went to college man and poor Delilah
i love Dead Presidents and had watched it multiple times in the 90s, but i can't really enjoy it as an adult, and this review reminds me why. A movie about a life being willfully wasted. Despite the brilliant photography, top-tier casting and incredible acting, It's just too sad. TOO sad. The ending makes me want to cry every time. As usual, i very much enjoyed this review.. You're commentary it so much fun and your voice is very pleasant. UA-cam keeps recommending other review channels, but honestly, i'm not even interested.
Such a great movie. Also, I found it an interesting take on showing how Vietnam affected young black soldiers. (Da 5 Bloods is also a great movie) We usually only see this conflict through predominantly white movies like Apocalypse Now, Platoon, etc.
Also hearing you say “mayne” like Terrence Howard made me chuckle not gonna lie 😂😂😂 which reminds me, you have to cover Hustle and Flow because the movie is based on Memphis so I know you’ll have a field day with that 😂😂
* There is no distinction between the timeline of when they robbed and the time they got busted, so it appear they stayed in the city for more than a week (I guess), but it never says how long. * Anthony told Kirby that he's going to talk to Cleon, but even though it's never said, Anthony is going to kill him. Anthony just wants to know what else Cleon has said or done. However, Kirby ain't got time for talking and was just going to kill him. * Had Cleo been on point during the robbery, the girl would not have had to put herself in harms way to save Anthony.

He could’ve stayed in the marines and ranked up. Then got out and got a better job. Gotten into real estate, did finances, any dod and teacher job. That’s wild.
That's the opportunities modern marines have, not war-torn marines in the 70s. Vietnam war veterans possibly had the worse treatment out of any generation. WW2 vets were seen as heroes, Korean war vets flew under the radar but Vietnam veterans became addicted to drugs, homeless and overall forgotten about. That's what lead to the changes and reforms that the modern military has, especially with the VA.
@@mohamedbaradji7504 that’s true for some but not for all my man. My dad served in the Vietnam war and was a ranger. When he got out he wasn’t addicted to drugs. A little standoffish but all and all he did the right thing by his famolt
@@danielstephens8595 that’s the thing, whether they had mental issues or not they still had lackluster support from the government. After serving they were just left alone, meanwhile these days before you leave the service you have to take classes to integrate back into civilian life. The opportunities they had then were nothing like the ones we have now
@@mohamedbaradji7504 are you speaking from experience? The only reason I ask is because my dad told me a lot of things they did as far as how they processed was better. He agreed a smaller portion of people needed help with integration and PTSD related claims but I can’t speak for everyone.
@@danielstephens8595 I’m speaking from my time in the military (currently on 7 years) vs back in the 60s-80s. Now we can take out federal loans and get VA benefits fairly easy compared to back then. Many vets from Vietnam even protested for jobs and were willing or have tosseed their medals. They were hated by the general public and forgotten about by the government they served unless they were being paraded around for political clout. If you’re interested you can research it as well, they were treated dangerously bad. As a black American back then, they were treated worse.

In the words of DJ Khaled, "Another one". You've done it again babygirl I love this classic. I loved Delilah opposed to Juanita I wish Anthony would have got with Delilah and went to college like Skippy said in the beginning. I thought Juanita was kinda disrespectful especially with 'Cutty' played by the OG Clifton Powell. Maturing is realizing that Cutty wasn't a bad dude. Anthony lost the right to be possessive about "his girl and "his" daughter when he didn't so much as contact them for years. At least Cutty helped them out while Anthony was gone.
I'm retired military 🪖 and its the best decision I ever made..I never saw war, earned 3 college degrees and saw the world 🌎 .. college is expensive and as a young blk kid its a better decision ....
Anthony made a litany of bad choices that brought down not only himself but those who loved him. He was an idealist drive by nativete ( we've all been there) he was his own worse enemy. He could have written to Juanita telling her what his life was like over there to give her a better understanding but he didn't. I don't think he cared about her at all. He pretty much told her that after getting with her. His broken thought process of what a man is is why his development remained arrested. I think he was her first and she felt more about him because of it. She did move on with Cutty but he wasnt who she wanted. He was who she needed there's a big difference between the two. New viewer and I just subscribed. I'm looking forward to more engaging content. All the best.
One of the lessons i got from this movie is that every action has a reaction that can affect any and everyone around u either for better or in Curtis case, for incredibly worst

27:55 I'm glad that you brought this up. I remember being a kid hoping that Delilah and Anthony would be together.
- "Why do black people have to have their own awards?" Because our work is never recognized by the mainstream, that's way. This was a film of Oscar caliber and I don't even know anybody white who has HEARD of it.
- Chris Tucker kept more millennials off drugs than Nancy Reagan and D.A.R.E. ever did. The scream I scroam when they showed him with those Storm/X-Men eyes, I swear...
- Top five GOAT soundtracks, hands down.
Interesting note: the judge at the end is screen legend Martin Sheen in an uncredited role. How dope is that!?
"My boss man Cutty...he used to tap that ass while you was over in 'Nam". 😂😂😂
The music from that car scene is Isaac Hayes' The Look of Love.
Good for you 👍🏾.
This movie is an underrated classic! Thank you for your review.
You always make me go rewatch the movie! They owe you royalties lol
Anthony’s mom was asking dumb questions like “What did you do?”
“Well mom, I almost got my head blown off numerous times. And this one guy got his 🍆 chopped off and shoved in his mouth…pass the salt please.”
😏😂
This movie gave me nightmares lowkey.
Seen this movie 100x growing up. Was one of me and my pops favorites to watch on VHS. Just recently learned this is partially based on a true story. The guy Anthony based on did like 7 years for the robbery, got out and became a preacher
Yup.
@@reneedennis2011did you read the book
@@crishnaholmes7730 No, I haven't read the book.
@@reneedennis2011 ok
4:25 when he beats dude without his leg 😂😂😂
15:06 Not to mention, in Ashanti’s “Rain On Me” video, this song was sampled, they recreated this scene (to some degree) and Lorenz Tate played her jealous, abusive, cheating boyfriend
As a Veteran, I love this movie, and I accept all its flaws. I really wanted Anthony to have a happy ending. I know the feeling of getting out of the service, only to feel like a fish out of water.
Same here bruh.
Especially being infantry. You get out, and all you know is fighting. It doesnt translate well to the civilian world
I always thought that Delilah was like 13 or 14 and thats why Anthony didn’t want to be with her because she was too young.
I thought that was the case too.
That makes sense - if he and Juanita were about graduate 17-18 - Delilah at least 15-16...maybe younger.
Yeah it seems like she missed a lot of the nuances of the movie. She doesn't sound too fond of the Anthony's character either
Skip didn't have a STI. he had "Agent Orange". Look it up. It's very interesting. And, here's a Fun Fact. The guy that gave Anthony the flier played Stacey on Menace to Society.
Good catch about Stacey. I didn't notice that.
Love the breakdown of this movie. I forgot that Terrence Howard was ins this movie. Great job as usual. Thanks for posting
I was a kid watching this and that scene of Skip at the end haunted me! Now every time I hear that song i think about it
Such a great movie. Also, I found it an interesting take on showing how Vietnam affected young black soldiers. (Da 5 Bloods is also a great movie) We usually only see this conflict through predominantly white movies like Apocalypse Now, Platoon, etc.
The dismissal of Vietnam veterans was also heavy in the film.
Don't forget First Blood.
Yup.
The way I kept refreshing my subscriptions waiting for you to upload 😂😂 you truly make my Sundays ❤❤
He didn't get the package. It was agent orange
That could be a possibility as well.
Another STUNNING review ❤
Not male set it off
Lmao 😂😂
Also hearing you say “mayne” like Terrence Howard made me chuckle not gonna lie 😂😂😂 which reminds me, you have to cover Hustle and Flow because the movie is based on Memphis so I know you’ll have a field day with that 😂😂
Listen, I forever got beef with Terrance and the way he said batteries....we know how to say batteries 😂
@@forthenostalgia I still remember he was finishing every sentence with "mayne" 😂😂😂😂
“Terrance Howard mane” idk why tht was so funny😂
* There is no distinction between the timeline of when they robbed and the time they got busted, so it appear they stayed in the city for more than a week (I guess), but it never says how long.
* Anthony told Kirby that he's going to talk to Cleon, but even though it's never said, Anthony is going to kill him. Anthony just wants to know what else Cleon has said or done. However, Kirby ain't got time for talking and was just going to kill him.
* Had Cleo been on point during the robbery, the girl would not have had to put herself in harms way to save Anthony.
And he really went on a world tour after war before he even checked up on that baby of his lol
Just discovered your channel today and I’m loving it! Thanks so much for all the very much-needed laughs and entertainment. Dealing with some kinda scary major health issues and watching your vids feels like hanging out and chilling with a friend. Three out of my three rescue hedgehogs agree - you rock!
😊🦔🦔🦔
Come on Dead Presidents!!! 👏🏾👏🏾
10:03 this part of the movie hit me different like this movie had the darkest most realistic depiction of that war I’ve seen in a movie other then apocalypse now
Yup.
It's a sad movie. But its a classic and I watch it everytime I see it
I just love these videos! It feels like I’m talking to my cousin 😂 keep up the great work! Cant wait for the next one. ❤
You should do why do fools fall on love! I can just imgine how hilarious your commentary will be!
Hustle & Flow must be done mayne
side note: we need a “Chile” compilation
I'm glad to see Chris tucker and larenz tate in the same picture 🖼
The transitions were everything! Including from drama to comedy. Excellent movie.
1. I wonder if Kirby not recognizing Anthony was foreshadowing
2. I thought Skip was drafted
Also, I liked Jose' and Kirby as well, too bad Jo, Delilah, and Skippy lost their lives ultimately. 😞
But other than that overall a forever Dope 90's film 🎥.
Good Analysis as Usual Babygirl Keep it up
And Lastly, can you do the following:
Poetic Justice
The Best Man
The Brothers
Brown Sugar
Breaking all the Rules
Hitch
P.S. that's OG Isaac Hayes on the Lincoln Continental scene and if that sounds familiar that's Ashanti "Rain on me" remixed 💯 factz
Another Hughes Brothers classic...
This movie is so Underrated along with movies like Fresh New Jersey Drive And Blue Hill Avenue
Yup.
His brother went off to college, med school and they got that job as a heart surgeon in that hospital in Seattle.
Roll credits. 😂😂😂
Lmao Dr Burke🫀
Great Commentary as always
I love your breakdowns on all the older films. Whenever you can could you do your Commentary/Review on Poetic Justice(1993) with Janet Jackson and Tupac Shakur as a request. Please I'll love that.🙌🏿🤎
Church!!! I been saying that for the longest 😂
@@devantejackson5085 Facts!!!🙌🏿🤣
This is a classic ❤️💯
I love your videos, thank you getting straight to the reviews no fillers!
I enjoy these recaps so much! She totally went in when they were talking about Kiyon! Lol! Peace!
“YO GET THE F OFF OF SPIDER”
Is something I constantly quote with my son when he wrestles his mama. (He’s only 17 months old, so of course he doesn’t understand, but he giggles like crazy) 😂 I love your content girl. I STAY BINGING IT
Love your channel! So glad I came across it.❤
Same here. I enjoy the commentary and opinions from her. ❤
Thank you 😊
Me too
Maturing is realizing that Cutty wasn't a bad dude. Anthony lost the right to be possessive about "his girl and "his" daughter when he didn't so much as contact them for years. At least Cutty helped them out while Anthony was gone.
Bro he was most likely that lil girls actual father.
Dude was a whole pimp. If he really cared about Juanita, she wouldn't be living in a broke down apartment with roaches.
Me and my mama favorite movie growing up 😩🤍
I'm retired military 🪖 and its the best decision I ever made..I never saw war, earned 3 college degrees and saw the world 🌎 .. college is expensive and as a young blk kid its a better decision ....
I wanted you to do this one so bad ❤️❤️
Great point! Going back to school would've been the best option for Anthony after he came back home.
This movie is a black classic. Chris tucker did his big one in this movie, it’s rare to see him playing a serious role but he pulled it off
Yup.
Girl, I just discovered your channel and I love it. Your commentary is hilarious 😂 👏🏾
Also 12:02 he got his hand blown off. Not trying to critique your video. Just providing a little insight. Love your work!
Honey I love this movie but your commentary had me HOLLIN 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣!!!!!
Thank you for giving these in-depth and insightful reviews to some fa sho classics, Sis!
15:13 i'ma just pretend they're riding to "Rain on Me" by Ashanti while they plan the robbery 😂
Funny cause larenz tate was the Ashanti bf in the video 😅
One of the lessons i got from this movie is that every action has a reaction that can affect any and everyone around u either for better or in Curtis case, for incredibly worst
15:07 The scene that always pops in my head when i think of Dead Prez, its soo euphoric.
I was waiting on this thank you 🙌
Such a sad story, but I feel bad for Sara and her brother (or sister) the most. Little girl going to grow up without a father or an Aunty. Like Anthony couldn't have hide some money for them?
I love the soundtrack to this movie!! When this movie first came out I bought both soundtracks on cassette. One of my favorite songs is “Get Up and Get Down” from the Dramatics.
