Here's Jack Elam in his best evil clown mode. This is from Rawhide, the 1951 movie, not the later TV series. I love a villain who really enjoys being bad, and nobody enjoyed it more than Jack Elam. How bad is he? Just watch what he does with that baby.

Colt Model 1873 .44 revolvers taking out people beyond their maximum effective range, few attempts at serious aiming (anyone who has fired the revolver knows you couldn't hit the Sydney Harbour Bridge without careful aiming and as was always taught, draw fast shoot slow)and no indications here of reloading after six shots. But at the end of the day it doesnt
t matter. Here is jack Elam in fine form doing what he always did best. A true character gunned down by some of the best Hollywood thespians.

*** Rawhide - I liked this movie! The story written by screenwriter Dudley Nichols (Stagecoach) takes place in a distant stop steps, which makes the film almost claustrophobic. Even in this restricted environment there is good action scenes, directed by Henry Hathaway, one of the masters in the western genre.
The plot highlights the characters. Besides Tyrone Power, Susan Hayward and Hugh Marlowe, who draws attention is the Tevis bandit (Jack Elam), the sadistic, cruel, psychotic and libidinous middle of the lazy eye gunman. The animalistic and ruthless style of Elam / Tevis later made famous actors like Lee Marvin, considered the chief desperado team of villains, especially in several violent westerns that have emerged in the following years. Elam, Marvin, Jack Palance, among others, have a lot of work to the good guys. The merit is Elam was the first to spread terror.
Kept under close surveillance, Tyrone Power can do little in the role of good guy Tom Owens to the unexpected outcome involving Tevis, Vinnie (Susan Hayward) and the baby Callie (Judy Ann Dunn).

actually he plays a coward in a western called The Sundowners: a very good
western indeed, public domain. Robert Sterling, etc. He is quite believable
    as a coward there.

Oy. What a terrible movie. Even Hayward, despite running around a lot, looks like she's just phoning it in this time. A shame, as I'm usually a great admirer of her work. Elam is dynamic enough, perhaps to make up for the rest of the cast which is downright soporific, but this is supposed to be a western, not a circus clown act. Just dreadful.
