  • The Atlas CCV is an uncrewed ground vehicle that gives military commanders an exciting new tactical option while keeping soldiers out of danger. It represents another autonomous offering further highlighting that remote operations represent the future of warfare. The ATLAS has been designed to give armies a significant edge in contemporary combat scenarios, with this autonomous combat vehicle tailored to execute the monotonous, hazardous, and arduous tasks common in warfare. Let’s take a closer look.

Excellent option. The old ASLAV-25 should be converted for uncrewed use rather than scrapped. It is robust, can swim rivers, lakes, that other vehicles in Australian Army cannot do, providing more battlefield maneouvre options.

Australia has a problem that most countries don't. Australia is the 6th largest country in the world but only has a population of around 27 million and the majority of Australia is uninhabitable so the majority of Australians live in the capital cities of each state.
This means that there is a need for drones to protect Australia's vast uninhabited areas and coastline.
The angry pizza box a cardboard drone that can be used for surveillance or fitted with different types of equipment including bombs or explosives has been sent to Ukraine and even destroyed a Russian fighter/bomber in flight is an example of the direction that the Australian military is heading.

The ground commander has plenty to do maneuvering troops. He really doesn’t need one more high tech gadget to fool with. Maybe armor units could use ‘em for mine clearing work. There’s a need for that, especially the cheaper, stripped down models. Keeping tanks and IFVs combat ready is already a full time job. You know, there’s a reason why the army hasn’t requested these things. Close air support is the ground commander’s best friend. Just ask him! Of course, he’ll likely say that CAS is great, but there’s just not enough of it! Spend your money wisely!

We have plenty of heavy hitters but they are useless if they are in retreat.
Just look at the Russian "turtle tanks" - heavy hitters that can take down damn near anything....but only if they survive long enough to be useful!
We need something that can take down these agile drones so other assets can do their jobs.
We need a fly swatter to protect our men and heavy vehicles, not another attack vehicle.

Seems a capable enough platform - but will it change the battlefield? I tried to see how but failed - apart from the unmanned bit. Delivering infantry to the battlefield seems, in Ukraine, to face a wide spectrum of threats ranging from small UAV and mines all the way to high precision artillery munitions and precision air strikes. With all ATGMs from the loitering lurking kind to the wire guided insensitive to EW in between. It appears that between peer foes, the element of surprise is all but vanished. Speed and manoeuvre remain important - and appear very important to the troops - but seem unable to provide enough protection in itself. We are not seeing any platform successful in this, the most desired by the troops being those built for survivability. Ukrainians treasure their Bradleys and CV90 because they survive when hit, and the Russians even use motorbikes in order not to get hit in the first place. I am not sure what the answer to this is - it seems an impossible equation to me, with attempts at combating all threats leading to impossibly large, heavy and immobile vehicles and attempts at escaping the threats leads to…. Well motorbikes. In this aspect and task we see nothing really new here - problably more of everything, but nothing new. Or am I missing an important point? The other tasks seem more promising - basically ISTAR - but the platform seems too large for those tasks. Can it do anything in that particular task, ISTAR, that a tiny UAV cannot? Firepower finally - is impressive. Firepower of IFV is, to me, an equally unsolvable equation.Need it firepower enough to combat all the threats in its intended environment - which I suppose is a battlefield with peer opposition and combined arms environment? Then you are forced to design a tank. Need it merely escape destruction in the environment? Then it becomes of very actual limited use. One cannot help to think of Namer - which is a tank, lumberingly serving as IFV - as opposed to the BMP-3 which is a tank turret on an egg shell. With the Bradley, CV90, Puma and K21 and their likes in between - but if you think of it, if they are the answer then what was the question? What problem are they actually designed to solve? It is a choice, it seems. What you want to succeed in, and what you prefer to fail in. With no perfect solution to the entire problem. And in this - is my point - wwe see nothing new here, do we? Just another compromise, no?

Yeah, the same was said about the Bradley IFV too, but it has been the best performing IFV against the Russians. The ATLAS CCV has the same bushmaster 25mm cannon which can't be a bad thing. Some say add a Slinger anti drone system, Anti Tank Missiles, anti air missiles. Even a reconnaissance drone with a set flight path to overcome electronic jamming to scout ahead which can be used with AI to determine targets for the ATLAS. There's plenty of scope. In other words, increase the stand off fighting range to compensate the high profile.
