D-4-36 1988. The one thing I remember was on top of our barracks door had a sign. It read, “ Through these doors have walked the greatest infantrymen in the world” WOW! That really knocked me for a loop because I knew it is true because of my grandfathers and their stories they told me, well I knew I had some big shoes to fill. I hope I made them proud in Heaven I gave it my very best

Interesting that a lot of National Guard folks went to harmony church. Mean a buddy also went there on that split program we did summer of 83 and 8483 at harmony church in 84 at sand hill. I was so bummed to finally take the family out there and show them the place and it was all gone! Thanks for the video this helps a lot!
I remember one time getting in a shouting match with the active duty trainees we were yelling no livers to them and they were calling us a bunch of nogos I guess it all changed with the Iraq war as a lot of national guides and them going over seas.

Steve are you from Lafayette, LA? Attended basic at Harmony Church 2nd Training Batt 3rd Plt A 1/38th. Drill Sgt Cameron, Bland, and another. I came back during Desert Storm for IOBC & Bradley Commander Course as a 2nd Lt and stayed on the Main Post in the octagon shaped dormitory barracks down the road from the jump towers . Went back years later, probably in the early to mid1990's . . . I cried. They had a transportation company there and my barracks was completely gone with high grass growing where it had been. Yep, I cried.

Went to church in August 85 (E-2-2..'Headhunters')
And that is where I found God (Drill Sergeant White). Hardest motherfuker to walk this Earth... (other drills wouldn't even make eye contact with him). Never had to raise his voice.. he'd just give you that look..(you know, that "why do I even let you live" look .).. and somehow, you magically got your shit squared -the -fuck away.
I lost my bearing once.. early in the cycle.. threw my cover to the ground..God did I become instantly popular. Enough Hats descended on me to block out the Sun.. ( back when they most definitely put their hands on you!).
Anyway, while I was spending the next 3 hours learning the nuances of PT (from my 4 new friends, who I at no time 'eyeballed!!!").. Drill Sergeant White slipped up next to me and whispered " they're just doggin you tonight private.. but tomorrow your ass is mine.. and I'm going to make you quit." He then patted me on the head, and smiled as he stood to leave and said.." better start thinking of somethin to tell that crack whore mother of yours why you're home early!"
Got to see him smile one more time.. right before graduation.. when I was so squared away I would cut you on all four corners. After inspection he brushed my shoulders, and quietly said "that cum burpin gutter slut is going to be so proud of you..."
I had a tear in my eye when he walked away.. without looking back he said "get on your fucking face private.. I wanna hear you knock em out!"
I was fuckin sobbing as I counted.. I'd like to think he had a tear in his eye too.. but I know better.
Fuck.. I'm sobbing now.. what the fuck is going on?

That theatre was cleaned at night by my dad and brother and I can hear the soldiers running and marching there. My dad was responsible for troop supply for Sand Hill and Harmony Church. One Sunday he took me with him when he went to make sure some new soldiers had what they needed for bedding, etc. It impressed me greatly that he went out of his way to serve them. I had asked him why. And he explained that they needed a place to sleep. Worked for me.

For a while at pt formation in the morning when they'd do roll call, never failed each platoon would report one are two men awol. Senior drill finally had enough and came out and talked to everyone in the company and the awols stopped.
