    I remember my Dad planting some of those purple potatoes about 30 years ago. Company sure got puzzled looks when my Mom sat blue mashed potatoes on the table. 😋 You and the girls planted a Patriotic potato patch, red, white (really yellow I suppose) and blue. Good Job! We canned a bunch of the smaller potatoes we got when I was a kid, just to make sure we had some in case they didn't last the winter. 😉

    FYI - I buy organic taters from the store and place them in a paper bag for a few days or so. Once I have the buds in the very least I then plant the taters with the most buds pointing up. Yep. I plant them whole. Believe it or not it works. I have even planted non-organic taters that had sprouted. Works great and it is a family tradition to plant the taters whole. I plant on St. Patrick's day here just as my grandmother once did. I'm of Irish decent and St. Patty's is what we call tater planting day. You are correct. Taters are tough. In fact I believe the worse you treat them the better off they are.

    Once again, a family working together. Key word "work". This effort on the part of the family is something an entire generation of people could learn from. Your family must spend a lot of time talking about the value of effort. I try to tell people about your web-presence but too many people don't seem to care about watching other people who have your value system. It seems it is too easy to watch the television or play video games. Oh, to be young and vibrant again. I think if i was (young and vibrant), I'd be your neighbor and try to exert a tenth of the effort that your amazing family does, and I'd consider it an accomplishment. Such an amazing family. On those inevitable days when you have sons-in-law, I hope each of them also considers the value of effort and accomplishment as well; so that you have a generation of grand-babies that also value independence, through hard work and personal willpower. This nation is going to need people like that and sooner than we all think. May your clan thrive forever and be a positive influence to all generations to come.

    Yeah, we cut them as we planted them. Doesn't matter but we hilled them one year and covered the whole plot with black plastic another year. Don't remember if it made a difference other than less work (no weeding) with the plastic. You punch a small hole and pull the tater leaves out, leaving the taters under the plastic. That's in climate zone 6B.

I've been wondering for the last five days since I watched this planting video. For some reason, your family's success is something I find myself rooting for. (notice the pun?) I suppose I started being a "fan" of your efforts when you and your Wunderkinder were trying to get that well dug by hand on the older property. Awesome family effort video!
    I was wanting to see how the potatoes grew & you showed it in this video! I always trench, run hose and water the trench, put compost in bottom of trench, place spuds & cover. So thats why i was curious how these would grow. They grew wonderfully! If u need to save space the rows could be closer together. I plant the rows 32" apart and they grow huge. Will be looking forward to the harvesting. Thats a lot of potatoes! Family will be able to sell some of those.

    BEAUTIFUL Garden. The girls did a great job. Nice and straight lines and they are going to enjoy digging them up and peeling them and eating them. Lots of recipes for potatoes. We eat lots of them along with cabbage and onions that we grow. Love you guys 🥰❤️

      Hi Joanna! Thank you! Have you ever made potato candy? My grandma always did way back in the day. It’s good stuff. I think it was peanut butter and powdered sugar.

    Just wondering if you are still doing videos? I enjoy your content I live in northern Michigan and my grandparents use to live in the SOO. It just nice to see all the videos knowing that we are around the same area. I am just starting out on my homestead and got a lot of good ideas on how to put some stuff together from watching your videos. Just wanted to let you know that you are making a impact on people and hope that you haven’t given up on the UA-cam thing.

    I almost always cut my seed potatoes, I just make sure they have a week or two to "cure" and form a kind of skin over the cut area before planting. It just helps prevent rotting.
    This year, we didn't have time to cut/cure, so we just planted whole potatoes, I'm very curious to see what kind of yield we get and if I notice a difference or not.

      Do you use any manure?

    • @WildOnesHomestead
      @WildOnesHomestead Рік тому

      @9252LIFE yes I have grown them in manure before! Honestly potatoes grow pretty well in just about anything, the biggest thing is to be consistent with the watering, especially with the drought stuff this year. You can end it with hollow bits on the insides otherwise and that always annoys me. 🤣
