In Godzilla Minus One, post-war Japan is at its lowest point when a new crisis emerges in the form of a giant monster, baptized in the horrific power of the atomic bomb. We're breaking down the story, including references and homages to the older films, as well as explaining the ending that leaves us with many questions of where things will go next.

12:14 Fun fact: The director, Takashi Yamazaki, did this scene as an homage the movie Jaws. At the Academy Awards, he ended up meeting Steven Spielberg, who he idolized as a director. Spielberg said that he really enjoyed Godzilla Minus One and saw it in theaters 3 times.
I IMMEDIATELY disliked this REPUGNANT comment.
Nice. I saw it in theaters twice. Once in color and once without it. It’s a REALLY good movie. It’s literally the perfect Godzilla movie. It’s also a good post war movie.
you know you made a really good movie when other great directors especially the one you idolized say they enjoy your work and watched many times over
That's sick. Saw it three times myself like Spielberg. The third time was in black n white.
Fun fact, teens “got off” to this movie…..💀 Gen Z is the only reason this movie made money. Because they literally want to normalize Sex with dogs… yeah…. Shocking huh. I haven’t even been to the theatre since 2017💀💀💀 these new movies are DOG SHIT, GEN Z is keeping the Pedo Hollywood in business

Fun Fact : @ 28:46 Tachibana did not install the ejector seat but it was already installed in the plane. There was a scene where Tachibana observed the cockpit and he saw the German words 'Schleudersitz' written on the seat and told koichi about it in the flashback.
My understanding was that the ejector seat just needed to be fixed along with the rest of the plane. So when Tachibana saw it had the possibility to have an ejector installed, he did it anyway for Kōichi.
i love the current state of godzilla man. we get incredible human stories like this, while also getting the silly monster fun with the monsterverse. great time to be a fan of the g-man
9:37 I don't think he's afraid to feel so much as he doesn't think he deserves it. In his mind, how can I move on and make a family when all those men on the island couldn't go home to theirs because I failed to act? He confirms this at 14:09.
Two things can be true at the same time though
Agree, plus he does not allow himself to move on because "his war isn't over." Especially, when people keep reminding him that kamikaze pilots are not supposed to survive the war. Honor demands that he "finish" his suicide mission.
My absolute favorite moment is when Mizushima shows up at the last minute to help them with the tugboats. Captain Akitsu says, "I'll be damned! I gotta admit I'm glad to see him!" This line is delivered PERFECTLY and dudes facial expression is amazing.
It feels like an Endgame style scene, or the scene from Star Wars Ep9 where all the ships show up, but actually done well because it's deserved.
As a Godzilla fan, I’m so happy to see you doing a video on this movie. Love your videos, man.
I saw this movie three times in IMAX, people didn't believe me when I told them how amazing it was. My favorite Godzilla movie! I've watched at least 18 of them 😅
People tend not to believe liars or those with trash taste in movies when the topic of conversation is a movie.
It's one of the best Godzilla movies to be released
that's because I made it.
Genuinely didn’t like it found it boring and just cheesy definitely think most over hyped movie of the year I don’t see what everyone else sees
@@thunderbudy wow you think you're so special eh? trying to not be a part of the norm? so edgy lol
@@thunderbudyMhmmmhmmm tasty retardation.

You know, honestly, this movie's atomic Breath. is 10 times more TerrIfying any other version i've seen
Shin Godzilla is next level too
@@Bill87762 Fair point, but its atomic breath is nothing compared to minus ones. The silence before the blast.
Yeah , the specific colour combined with the iconic glow really gives off a sense of pure destructive power.
Are you really so easily impressed by a couple dorsal fins that act like pistons?
@@idknemore525 no. it's the fucking atomic breath looking like an actual atomic blast, instead of either a mostly shrugged off ranged attack versus another kaiju, or the finishing blow.
dude fucked up a city with that shit. it seemed to do more damage than one of the recent ish western ones where godzilla went critical and started melting buildings just walking near them.
29:00 The crew weren't saluting Koichi, they were saluting Godzilla--ritually showing respect to a formidable opponent
I took it as a bit of a symbolic middle finger to goji. As in a well you tried buddy, but you couldn’t break us.
@@thedeepfriar745at the point they were at, there isn’t much of a difference
This movie really kicked so much butt. I wish more movies were made with this level of craft.
By craft do you mean phoning in everything except like 70% of the visuals? Maybe look at a painting sometime if that's all it takes to make an impressive movie for you.

Something I personally find interesting about this Godzilla is how I genuinely saw this almost eldritch side to him. Shin Godzilla definitely had this element more blatantly, but the way this Godzilla regenerates his flesh and just comes back to life has this eldritch quality to his biology especially considering what may be happening with Noriko
He was genuinely frightening in this movie. The way he marched through the city and moved - not as fluidly as in the Legend films - was so eerie.
You do not know what Eldritch means.
@@idknemore525 I understand why you might think that, because OP forgot to mention that several audience members went insane during his screening.
@@jfgibson73 i mean, if he was thinking that, then i don't think he knows what eldritch means...
I loved Doc...you always had the feeling that he was part of scientific research for the war effort that he was not proud of.
I watched Godzilla Minus one (and Minus Color) feeling like somewhere Ishiro Honda was smiling.
If it had been possible this was the movie he wanted to make.
This Godzilla was a huge chunky beast I loved it!
Yeah but it has a muppet face for some incredibly stupid reason.

i loved this movie! the way i cheered when godzilla made his debut on odo island, and his atomic breath is so cool. his spines being forced out his back as he charges up is sick
You cheered when you saw that he was just a random dinosaur? Do you have no imagination?

In the Japanese version, she doesn't say the same thing to him at the end. They changed it for the dub and it changes the whole meaning.
JP - "Is your war finally over?"
ENG - “Can this war of yours finally be done?”
Makes it sound like she's more annoyed instead of actually caring if his "war" is over.
Yeah i hate bad dubbing
The entire Ginza incident is an updated version of the one in the original 1954 version, where he raids Shinagawa, I would highly recommend watching the original even after watching GMO. They're not connected but it feels like they are, and they both have a different atmosphere and story, so it's still enjoyable.
"Godzilla really looks ticked off"
Damn homie doin godzilla, mad respect bro.
Glad you covered this. Minus One is AMAZING. The film manages to cover very heavy topics in a monster movie where the large points on the environment and smaller individual horrors of war never come off as heavy handed or corny.
One of the best things this film accomplished, that the American slop never has, is nailing the oppression of the scale. The hopelessness and despair of facing threats so large that one person fighting against it seems ridiculous, but it is truly the only way to try and redeem oneself.
Homie, the final message was "maybe don't kill yourself?"
How is that not corny?
And the only environmental messaging was "Don't drop atomic bombs on dinosaurs or else they'll become bigger dinosaurs."
This was a 10/10 movie. Saw it with my brother then again with the missus once I witnessed how great it was. She cried at the "Don't call me father Niniko, I'm not your father". Minus One is a great Party movie too.
Yeah it's great for parties because you aren't missing much if you get distracted for an hour.
Waited for you minus one ending explained for so long
You really needed it explained to you?
Ex-Pilot has ptsd from the war, specifically for not killing himself to save others as he was instructed.
Ex-pilot saves people as a kamakazi pilot, but with the twist that he ejects himself (ejection seats were not given to kamikaze pilots), thus redeeming himself.
Godzilla "dies" but you see him regenerate.
Pilot's love interest survives but has radiation burns from the atomic breath.
@@stalkingreaptor285 To be honest I just like Foundflix's videos, I watch them out of entertainment. Thanks for your explanation as well.
Cheers Mate.

The ending was literally just "Japanese Empire's military is awesome even though they can't do anything right."
You really needed that spelled out for you???
One of the best movies I have seen! It’s not about Godzilla, it’s about the people! Such a great movie.
The people were barely cardboard cut-outs and they paint the Japanese Empire as noble. Please be less historically illiterate.
@@idknemore525 not really, when I say it’s about the people, I mean the main character, his adopted
Daughter, but please yell more, I am having hard time understanding
@@idknemore525 You didnt watch the movie then probably just this video because in the movie they clearly bash the government aka the Japanese Empire for there lack of support in the war and bad tactics and that they are not seen as people by the ones at the top.
I am so happy you decided to review this movie! I have been a Godzilla groupie ever since I was a little boy! I can remember being in grade school watching the old ones which were essentially a short Asian guy in a costume fighting other people in monsters costumes! Most of the original movies I watched at a child were all in Japanese and dubbed over by Asian people in English. So the words were never quite right and matched up with their mouths. But that’s one of the great things that made the older movies so great…. kind of!😂
Now, over 40 years of being a fan, and I hope I am able to show my son these movies one day?! Hopefully he will enjoy them as much as I did and have!?
(He probably won’t because of how much technology has progressed, and kids today want everything to be so high definition!)
That ALL BEING SAID….. I LOVE GODZILLA and all he represents 👏🏻👍
Great work as always and can’t wait to see what movie you review next?!
I really appreciate that they still gave Godzilla the man-in-a-suit look while on land, and the cute face similar to the one from the early 70s. This movie really feels like a return to the classics.
I think that the girl with g cells will have a psychic connection to Mothra, much like the "fairies" from the originals.
This is now, the greatest FoundFlix video ever.
Raise your subterranean standards.
@@idknemore525No.
So happy this movie is being well regarded by general audiences.
I'm not. There's a reason it appeals to the lowest common denominator movie goer.
@@idknemore525 True but aiming for that mark does fill seats. Much like cheesy romance novels that usually follow the same formula or bands that release the same sounding music over and over, it often sells.
Loved this deep dive! Wouldn’t mind seeing more content like this from you in the future, keep up the awesome work as always FoundFlix!!
Thank you. I’ve loved Godzilla since I was a kid and hearing someone else sound just as excited as I am about this movie makes me very happy. Thank you, I mean it.

"They killed Godzilla!.... For now... he doesn't like being killed very much... he doesn't stay dead..."
Perfect comedic tone!
YES! I have been waiting for this one DESPERATELY
Very few movies accurately portray the TRUE metaphor of a specific antagonist, but Gojira Minus One pulls it off in spades.
I'll always be a Godzilla fan, but I grew up around Japanese Americans, many of them WW2 vets and those in internment camps as kids, so my love for the movie is a tad biased.
But I believe we can all agree that out of all of the Godzilla or Monsterverse movies, Gojira: Minus One is THE Mozart of the franchises and the perfect way to honor 70 years of Godzilla.
Godzilla was never just one true metaphor. Jfc you think like a child. And this movie didn't even do anything new with any of the metaphors.
Jfc let people like what they like. Stop commenting under everyone's comment who liked the movie. Get a life
@idknemore525 then you missed the point of Minus One.
And yes, Godzilla can be whatever metaphor you want depending on what era you're watching, but Godzilla's original concept of metaphorical creation was that Godzilla is the LIVING REPRESENTATION of how destructive nuclear weapons can be and the lasting damage it can cause.
Minus One represents that original metaphor flawlessly.
"Having his head blown off is no problem for the big G."
He and I have that in common. I get domed on the reg, and I've never let it slow me down.
This movie had me glued to the screen the entire time.
You've been gone a month but you came back strong with this movie recap

Just watched it on Netflix. Very good. After seeing Godzilla’s first atomic breath blast, I felt a real sense of dread. I was also glad conventional weapons never worked. There’s many movies where the weapons don’t work in the beginning but suddenly work later
Thanks for doing a godzilla video you should do more godzilla videos
I like their alka seltzer strategy. Creative.
Effervescence killed the monster! Lol
This made my day
Beautiful movie from start to finish. Honestly my favorite and I've watched pretty much watched all the movies over 40 years.
This is one of the movies that made my tear up, even the recap is great
I’m absolutely obsessed with this movie! ❤️❤️❤️❤️
I loved watching this movie in theatre with my friend
This was my favorite godzilla movie story wise.
Dude I’m dying for you to do a review on I saw the tv glow
For those curious, the Japanese refer to the end of WW2 as being 'reduced to zero' or 'being at zero'. With the appearance of Godzilla and the destruction it causes, Japan ends up at Minus One.
I'm going to have to correct you. Godzilla movies have always been human-centric; they aren't "filler". The idea that Godzilla was the star is a distinctly Western distortion. Godzilla is a force of nature, an engine of destruction, and the movies are about how humans survive/deal with it. Even the "Godzilla vs [Y]" movies focused mostly on the humans. I think too many people only know Japanese Godzilla movies through clips and (incorrect) word of mouth. I also suspect that there is some confusion of Godzilla movies with Ultraman movies. Godzilla movies are "humans survive disaster caused by kaiju" while Ultraman movies are "human-like being fights kaiju to protect humanity".
Those aren't missiles at 12:48, they're high explosive rounds from the ship's main guns. This is the late 1940s, well before missile tech was a thing.
tbh even in the western ones, he's not the main deal, usually. like dude said, godzilla's not present enough to have the story solely revolve around him.
@@KeithElliott-zd8cx Yeah, but if you listen to the way people critique those movies, the most common point is that humans are the focus too much and they should focus on Godzilla. And it's said/written as if this is not the way it's always been.
@@Uldihaa the humans ARE the main focus.
but, i mean, we aren't coming to see the humans play out their little drama. we're here to see them have to cope with godzilla, essentially. it's not 'fucking dave's life is almost ruined' as the title, it's godzilla.
so, i can sort of see their point a bit. imagine a spiderman movie where he only 'spidermans' for like, 1/10th, if not less, of the movie.
the us monsterverse ish movies get around this a bit, with longer fight scenes, or even just, multiple fight scenes.
@@KeithElliott-zd8cx Then like I said, you don't understand what a Godzilla movie is. If you want kaiju and battles, you want Ultraman movies.
@@Uldihaa you mean they.
and no. you can still 'get it' and want more 'zilla. they're not mutually exclusive concepts.
i mean, that's basically what the monsterverse movies did. human driven plot, but more godzilla fighting. seems to be selling pretty good.
Really didn't think this ending needed to be explained. Pretty straight forward.
I will forever say that this Godzilla looks like an angry cat swimming in the water
Nice!
You know a story is amazing when even a recap makes you care for the characters and get emotional
This film has of my favorite scenes of any movie, and the scene isn’t really focused on Godzilla. I got chills when the kid returned to his friends with the citizens to help. So good. Love stories like that.
This is one of the first times I’ve ever seen a movie with an iconic villain where the main characters weren’t just fluff. It was like watching 2 movies. Just unreal how good the actual plot once. Anytime Godzilla came in i was like “hell yeah i forgot this is a Godzilla movie”. And that’s why i love it.
Yeah I like the movie even though I'm not obsessing over it like a lot of people are, my great-uncle he was an occupational soldier in Japan right after World War II he was there a number of years before he got sent to Korea when war broke out there. I saw a lot of people comparing this one to Kong Godzilla the New Empire even though those movies are completely two different animals one is supposed to be thought-provoking post-war Japan and all the other one is just popcorn entertainment.
THIS IS ONE OF BEST OF THE VERY FEW GODZILLA OR ACTION MOVIES FROM THE LAST 5 6 YEARS
Thank you!!!!
I have watched this movie twice so far. This is one of the few movies where I nearly cried.
Upload more often please!
16:44 "He hits the building with his thundering thighs, and sends the reporters falling to their demiiiiiiise... Go go Godzilla"
Excellent movie. Glad i saw it in theaters
13:17 his heat ray caused a mushroom cloud back in 2001's "Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack." Like you said, Minus One borrows quite a bit from that film.
I still love the twist that he installed an ejector seat, instead of still hating him for not following through with kamikaze.
I've always *loved* Godzilla, especially the old films, so I was *very* happy and impressed with this movie.
Kind of a shit twist if you're making a historically inspired film and the whole twist revolves around a character possessing a real world device that they wouldn't actually have had given the time period.
@@idknemore525 Quick google gave me this "One of the He 280 test pilots, Helmut Schenk, became the first person to escape from a stricken aircraft with an ejection seat on 13 January 1942" and someone in other comment said that the ejection seat in the movie had German letters on it. But even without that tiny detail we know that Germany and Japan exchanged technologies during WWII.

I really enjoyed seeing the human side of things too. A lot of character development and people putting their feelings aside to do the right thing. That made it a lot better for me as well.
Something that i like so far is that nothing is mystical yet
I dont wanna say its 100 rooted in science but its still definitely sci-fi
Feels really cool
Damn. This actually seems really good.
Koichi is always a reliable guy, Yare yare
When I first watched the movie, I thought that the safety lever for the bomb was actually an ejection seat. So when Koichi pulled it and was still in the plane, I genuinely thought he was going to die. I was so happy when I saw his parachute :)
I doubt they'll make a sequel. They didn't make a sequel to shin Godzilla so I don't expect one from this
I mean I don't think the ending of this movie really needs an explanation, but I'm glad that you covered it anyway.
