Each operator in Spanish army have also the pocket knife, and a kind of small size spoon and fork for the meal (stainless steel), so they don´t have to generate extra residues, plus it maximizes the space for the meal in the ration pack. That´s the reason it´s not included basically. I can recall the lunch ration has traditionally also coffee, but it is true it varies frequently on some configuration depending on where the meal is supposed to be eaten. I certainly enjoyed the review! Thanks a lot.

spanish army rations are divided in breaksfast, lunch and dinner. Whit the breakfast ones come a lot of crackers and you use them along the day. Good review

You're missing context. Spanish soldiers carry reusable silverware as part of their gear, this creates less garbage. The crackers for the paté is given to you in the breakfast MRE, that one has a bunch of crackers with the idea that you'll save some for lunch, aswell as the instant coffee bags, they are also given in the breakfast MRE.

The crackers get issued apart so the tins dont crush them. There called "pan galleta". Toothbrush comes with breakfast ration.

The Spanish issue a small/medium sized loaf of bread in the field with each ration, if they can. That's to dunk in your soup, and most importantly, to spread the pate on.

    A few thoughts:
    1. I would much rather have a ration with less.... "goodies" and accessories... and better mains. For that reason, I think I would be into this Spanish ration. The trick, I think, with rations is to minimize the gap between ration food and "real" food. This ration appeared to do a good job of that.
    2. I recommend skipping the American MRE. As someone who ate a number of those in the past, I assure everyone that they're not missing anything by NOT eating that.
    3. I have seen a couple videos from this guy and... really couldn't care less about his "chap's guide".... but really love his little outdoor shed for overnight getaways. I would really love to have one such shed for myself. I would recommend more videos filmed at the shed. I don't know if this guy actually cooks, but perhaps some rustic, outdoor cooking or something like that?
    4. Finally, with all due respect... I would have thought that a guy who purports to be an authority on class and sophistication would be a little better at not slurping, speaking with his mouth full, and scraping his fork/spoon across his teeth.

If you turn the metal stove the other way round it would work better (four metal walls looking up, and two looking down, just for support). It would still allow air to come in, but not as much as seen in the video, so it would heat better. Regards.

I would be interested to see another 24hr hour ration pack review of the Spanish kit. IF and it's a big if, that one came with some decent coffee and a pack of choccy bickies it could challenge the UK pack. Yet again another informative and relaxing Sunday watching video Sir!

Excellent video Ash, really interesting to see the ration packs and how they are composed. One thing I was wondering, shouldn't you use the little stove the other way around? Congratulations. I really liked your video. I'm Spanish and it's been quite a few years since I did my mandatory military service. Actually, they are professional. I wanted to tell you that the portion does not include a spoon, fork or knife because they are carried inside the canteen case, which also has an aluminum saucepan underneath. Another thing I wanted to tell you is that you have turned the small stove upside down to heat the food. The two-sided part is downward and the four-sided part is upward. This prevents the flame from escaping and potentially causing a fire. I'm glad you liked it. Greetings

I just wanted to compliment you on your choice of bumper music, Ash. There’s something about piano jazz that puts me somewhere between listening to a “Peanuts” cartoon in the background and enjoying a scotch and water at a dimly-lit piano bar in midtown Manhattan (or, of course, the New York Bar on the 52nd floor in the Park Hyatt in Tokyo.) And bravo on using the Kelly Kettle!

I remember various MRE as in the barracks I served in, there were several units from different countries. But my favourite MRE was the CANADIAN one as they combine the best of both worlds, the English and the French. Their meals are really substantial. They offer three different meals, i.e. breakfast, lunch and supper and each meal has a combination of 6. So that makes 18, and that is quite a choice.
For breakfast you'd get a cooked breakfast, almost a kind of a Full English Breakfast, so that could get you started off for the day: hash browns or ham steak with mustard sauce or scalloped potatoes and ham.
For lunch you'd get e.g. Shepherds Pie or Cordon bleu or hungarian goulash or beef Chop Suey.
And for supper they have e.g. Tarragon chicken or Salisbury steak dinner or cheese Tortellini.
But my favourite one was "Poutine", containing big Chips and Cheese curds and topped with gravy, a specialty from Quebec. I could always find large helpings of that as it was not popular with British troops: the vinegar was missing!

Another video idea to do is Fair Isle sweaters, which are patterned sweaters. Only because I think its the perfect item to help stay stylish without worrying too much about getting stains on your clothes. And it can also be layered really nicely too and can be easily be cold washed (unlike a suit). Because lets face it, when wearing a suit you want the most out of it and that'll be to avoid stains as much as you can, especially if its stone coloured or such.
Its the perfect item to be used in a casual setting, especially if you still want to wear a shirt and tie since there's loads of Fair Isle sweaters with V necks and even deep v neck shapes. The patterns from the Fair Isle sweater also will stand out in a crowd of people.

The USAFE joked that MRE stood for Meals Rejected by Ethiopians.
The interesting point that the firm that produces MRE meals, also produce MREs for the American Red Cross, which are distinguishable as come in a yellow packet, and the recipe MRE meals have spices removed for third world tastes.
So there might be some truth in the joke.
Best thing in the MREs are the big plastic spoon, and the self heater device.

I wonder is this intended to be complete or the protein basis to expand on depending on what you can get access too, or other bits are issued on top. If you could get some tomato or onion = tuna salad. Or a some rice / potato or a bit of bread to go with the meat. Same with the pate, all protein. Very few carbs as is, in the ration. I don't think the design of this is a complete day like the British/American sort. I'm guessing Spanish troops issued mess tins and eating utensils. Maybe collectively brew coffee.
Spanish military numbers probably vastly increased by bodies like the Guardia Civil who are Police but very much Military styled (you are probably aware of this).
I've always found Spanish tuna to be much better than UK canned stuff, the white albacore stuff is beautiful but even what you get in LIDL in Spain, much better than ours.

2:28 Worth noting that contrary to the UK, The Kingdom of Spain is not only a Mediterranean country, like you like to point out, but also very much an Atlantic country. However, for obvious reasons related to British leisure habits, most Brits only acknowledge the Mediterranean. A canary islander or a Galician most likely cringe at that bold statement. If you allow me an analogy, it's like saying France is an Atlantic country, full stop. If you give credit to one sea, you need to acknowledge the other one, too. A map and some quick research would solve any doubts 😂
