What you can do with the werthers originals is get 2-3 of them and dissolve them in a cup of hot water. From there, add the coffee and a quarter of the condensed milk. Then, have the jam sandwiches with the coffee. Best 5-star coffee you'll get in the field. Now, with the hearty beef stew. First, you want to make the mashed potato and mix the cheese into it with salt and pepper and Tabasco sauce. Layer the potato on the bottom of your cups canteen and lay the heated hearty beef stew over top. If you get crackers in your rat pack, break them over top. You just made a field Shepard's pie. Also, 5 star.

In the Aussie Army Cadet Corps we had rat packs on some of the camps. At annual camp we lived off the 10 man ration packs and some fresh fruit for 9 days while we camped on an army base. We were told (warned) the cheese stops you up and the chocy helps you go so be wise and use them as needed... When we got home and went back to school a teenager got dared to eat 5 packs of the chocy at school. An hour later he raced from one end of the playground to the loo and was there until his parents had to transport him home after school ended. The next day he had to help the school cleaners sweep and mop the toilets, as a reminder to think thru consequences before taking a dare.

Like most things with Rat packs, if you have the time to prepare it all, you really can make wonderful meals... or if tactically you can eat it all cold, sadly. Ration packs have a shelf live of 7 years. The trick with the large chocolate bar if its 'white' is to turn it into a hot chocolate drink, in your cup canteen is to bring water to the boil and place the chocolate bar into the water until it melts. Yes the peach in syrup usually goes off, the acid in the syrup dissolves the lining of the tin. Lastly remember the difference between the 'old' Vietnam ration packs and the new ration packs - is that the new packs are actually eatable. We would eat the main meal at night for two reasons. 1. if its dark you cant see what your eating and 2. you usually had a blocked nose... so you couldn't smell it either.
Had the old style ration packs in the Aussie army cadets. We were just glad to have food to eat at the end of the day. Also had them when we did search and rescue. You used to be able to buy them at the army disposal and surplus stores. At annual camp we had the 10 man 24hr ration packs and one year the "cook" loved pepper. We had extra rations of water supplied after we got one of the chain of command to eat a plate without a drink. He bet he could eat the plate and go back for seconds in 5 minutes. If he won we would have an extra night march. If he lost the command would do all of that nights washing up. He lost and never lived it down.
As an American when I went to Australia I was AMPED to try Vegemite, Milo, and TimTams.... I was NOT let down. If I ever get back there I'm never coming back 😂
The condensed milk is normally a creamy colour with the consistency of honey, that one has turned to caramel from the heat. We buy the big cans and boil the sealed can to make caramel but I've heard up North cans will caramelising just sitting on a shelf.
There's a reason why the tube of sweetened condensed milk smelled/tasted like caramel. It's literally one step from being milk caramel. You can use the stovetop, oven or even a microwave oven to cook it into a Dulce de Leche caramel.
There used to be a can or tube of "coffee & milk" in the shops here in SE Australia. It was made from sweetened condensed milk and coffee powder. We would buy it to carry when we had a search and rescue mission, light enough to carry in our pockets and we would use it to make coffee with the hot water from a Thermos. Also caramel made with sweetened condensed milk is the best. In cadets we had little hexi stoves that were to sit out kidney cup on to warm stuff up in. We would put water in the metal cup and sit the tube of condensed milk in it. Then watch carefully, checking the tube to see how hot it got. Let it heat for 15 minutes or so. Let it cool down. Sit and squeeze or suck the caramel out of the tube. It goes even darker caramel and tastes almost the same as the old "Jersey caramel" lollies.

I used to cut my beef jerky up and let it reconstitute before adding it to the beef stew. The other thing was a cheese cake using the chocolate, cheese, condensed milk and crackers (crushed up to make a base) and if you made a big enough cake you could share with your cobbers (especially if they chipped in for ingredients)
As an Aussie when i saw you were trying what our boys have i got excited and thought you ought to have some diggers there to teach you how to eat it, low and behold you managed to "obtain" some of the boys. Lol
Almost. Its part of the ingredients. Homebrewers recognise tge smell but its white. Add salt and vegetable scraps and peels and boil till its blackened. Under pressure. Then boil it more until it looks like axle grease.
An Aussie rat pack can be re-loved by the quartermaster with the appropriate qualification a number of times. You definitely had an old one, that had most likely spent some time in the sun under a tarp on exercise, the peaches are a good giveaway. Fun fact, you can make alcohol out of the peaches and sugar depending on how long your on ex for and have the right kinda vehicle to transport your containers..

Dude, you're supposed to eat the can of cheese whole at the end. It plugs you up so that the meals that go through you like water doesn't just fall right on our of you while you're walking 🤣🤣
Nonononono... when a can is bulging like that, it's a no-go! It means it's spoiled. The chocolate turning white means it has "bloomed"... it's part of the chocolate coming to the surface surface due to heat or age.
the canned fruit is the first thing to go in every rat pack I have tried. Also good use for the bloomed chocolate it melt it hot water and condensed milk (and sugar if you got a sweet tooth) as a drink
Vegemite is best served right in the nostril. Right after steeped with some boiling water, the steam helps it travel ateaight to your frontal cortex and get the aussie language really 👌 down pat. About 10-15 min after you feel the effects of 'Thats not a knife' syndrome.
Sweetened condensed milk is caramelized. The chocolate has excessive fat content by design and goes white on the way out of the factory. The canned peaches are always suspect, two fruits is always better.
@@alpinealpine2793 yes, but the condensed milk is not usually that brown, and has become more caramalized. I have had new chocolate ration that is not white, heat helps the cacao fat to bloom out of the chocolate
We used to do what we called 'break down rats'. So we'd get issued rations hopefully before going into the field and could pull them apart and discard what we didnt want and supplement with 'jack rats', ie just store bought stuff you brought with you. That way you werent careying stuff you werent going to eat.
One over looked standout in an Australian Rat pack is the spoon. Thick yet sleek durable and reliable. I am glad you’re a fan They did you dirty by bringing you a Foxtrot. Actually looks like the F got better The peaches may have gone bad. I’ve never had them hiss. The cans get beat up but don’t usually hiss
Many Americans struggle with Lamb. It's surprisingly not common in the US, except in a few small and specific regions. It's a very high fat meat and the fat tastes grassy or as some say, like poo. It's really a very strong flavour, dependent on the age of the lamb and the diet of the sheep before it was culled. To me that Lamb Curry would be great. British reviewers tend to love it, US not so much.
My dad used to save the cheese and condensed milk for my sister and the chocolate for me and bring them home. We were always so excited to get them even though it all tastes loke garbage hahahaha
When fresh, the Huntley and Palmer crackers are ace with cheddar cheese(the British Cheddar, unlike the American equivalent). However, anything produced and placed into a ration pack usually loses the civilian equivalent taste! Could it be the added preservatives or the fact it has been in some food warehouse for a long time? When cold, wet and hungry we will eat anything and everything; right? Remember, eat what you can and as fast as you can! You never know when what is going to happen!!

German candy in an australian rat pack! the old man werther's original are a german gift to the world 😎
I need a MRE Coffee showdown between the various countries
Literally going to film that this week. Wrote that in my list of stuff to do last night you mind reader!!!
@@Butterworthdasyrup As a Army WO I need it for ...... research
love the video and this series in general
So many of these in my house and all best before 2019... my husband still eats them when out camping lol
They've actually started selling these in camping shops (Anaconda for the aussies) for $15 just for the main meal 😂
Used to get the old style packs in army disposal or surplus stores.
Thankyou 🇦🇺 🇺🇸 soldiers and all allies .
I love how everyone in the comments is talking about the expiry date, like ive only ever had expired rat packs,
"I don't know if I should open this, because it's about to explode."
Mate, welcome to EOD... :)
Lol
Best rat pack brekkie is the muesli with the chocolate protein powder and just enough water to make a paste. Its the only thing that gets me through stand to 😌
I like the idea of the trying the MRE with people who know the food and tell you what and how to eat it. These small side storys are gold
lol love Aussie commentators
Yes they were hilarious
I used to cut my beef jerky up and let it reconstitute before adding it to the beef stew. The other thing was a cheese cake using the chocolate, cheese, condensed milk and crackers (crushed up to make a base) and if you made a big enough cake you could share with your cobbers (especially if they chipped in for ingredients)
Definitely a very old and out of date rat pack! But still 95% edible, which raises some questions 😂
As an Aussie when i saw you were trying what our boys have i got excited and thought you ought to have some diggers there to teach you how to eat it, low and behold you managed to "obtain" some of the boys. Lol
don't forget where the yeast extra base comes from - some of Australia's oldest Breweries - Cascade and Boags - after the beer is brewed.
Almost. Its part of the ingredients. Homebrewers recognise tge smell but its white. Add salt and vegetable scraps and peels and boil till its blackened. Under pressure. Then boil it more until it looks like axle grease.
Peaches, crushed up jam Bikkies, condensed milk, muesli and m&m’s mixed up = flavour town
I'm Aussie and my aunt made the best Xmas lunch dinner with a Vegemite and peanut butter roast chicken back in the early 90's. I've made it ever since 😅
Dude, you're supposed to eat the can of cheese whole at the end.
The rations pack with the Shrewsbury jam biscuits are worth it. I don’t care if that’s the only thing I eat all day it makes the day well worth it.
This was really good! Thanks for taking several bites for the US team! 🤣🤣🤣. Your Aussie were fun.
My son and I enjoy watching your videos ty for them
I would say that that Ration has seen some heat, and caramalised the condensed milk, bloomed the chocolate and overcooked the peaches
@@Precisa72 to be honest I wouldn't have touched the sweetened condensed milk after I had seen it that colour.
The advantage of Aussie ration dinner meals is that you probably be eating them in the dark. 😂😂
The peaches were penicillin flavored.😅
We used to do what we called 'break down rats'. So we'd get issued rations hopefully before going into the field and could pull them apart and discard what we didnt want and supplement with 'jack rats', ie just store bought stuff you brought with you. That way you werent careying stuff you werent going to eat.
One over looked standout in an Australian Rat pack is the spoon. Thick yet sleek durable and reliable. I am glad you’re a fan
They did you dirty by bringing you a Foxtrot. Actually looks like the F got better
The peaches may have gone bad. I’ve never had them hiss. The cans get beat up but don’t usually hiss
I was terrified he was going to get botulism😅
As a Aussie you gave me a great laugh. Vegemite is good on hot toast with butter 😊
I choose to think we are on top, not downunder. Go you for trying the FRED.
I love the glorious naivety of asking the Aussies if you should try the Vegemite straight up. Of course they didn't skip a beat in saying yes.
How have you never tried muesli? It’s granola with dried fruits, you add milk to it and have it as cereal.
The military version of Ted Lasso trying tucker from down under? Love it mate.
I remember when my ex-husband was in the Army in the mid 90s and the MREs had a small bottle of Tabasco in them.
Jam in the model glue tube is pretty fun!
Their are some good cooking recipes with vegemite, very rich addition to beef dishes.
I love the tinned cheese, its so bloody hard to get in australia. Not sure why? Ive even emailed bega asking to buy a bloody carton of it but they refuse.
Rice packets, sweetened condensed milk and sugar packets mixed together with hot water to make rice pudding... It's the best out field.
Back in the 90's the "D" pack was the best Beef and Tortellini.
I will give this video a 93 out of 100. Not subscribed for long but entertaining as ......stayed all 41 minutes. Keep em coming
Appreciate that
Love the video alongside the commentary from the Aussies!
They were hilarious
