We used to think that other countries liked the whole liberal-democratic package. Turns out that a lot of them were simply overawed by superior Western arms.
Because the rest of the world views the UK as a whore who requires no payment for services rendered. And rightly so...Third worlders invade your country precisely because of "western values". It's relative. There's a lot of corruption here in the UK, but it's still a democracy. I guess the main difference is whether the country has meaningful elections. I'd like to see proportional representation in this country so we aren't voting between two parties that are the same.
@@ElseMush what extra issue would cross us over the line? We get to vote for an MP that can change party. Some parties allow a leadership vote by the members from the options presented by the elites. And even then they can ignore them and install their leader of choice.

I think this is the first time I ever saw a speech given in the House of Lords.
Lord Hannan diagnoses the issue with precision. Yet, I cannot help but feel that the source of this loss of political credibility abroad comes as a result of cultural collapse at home. Western European and North American electorates have changed - economically, ethnically, culturally. The relatively poor leadership we have is indicative of this. Democratic societies are only as enlightened as their people. When the level of education and the quality of democratic participation are reduced to tribalism, outcomes in a democracy nosedive. This is playing out in real time in England and the US. It is no surprise that when Emirati or Chinese citizens visit London and see addicts, knife crime, shoplifting and violent pro-Palestine marches in the millions, they return home with a much greater conviction in their own system of social ordering. This would never have been the case 20-30 years ago. The road to legitimacy abroad is conditioned on the preservation of Western culture and citizenship, and on the rejection of tribalism.

A rather selective use of recent history. While I condemned and continue to condemn the Russian attack on the Ukraine, it wasn’t unprovoked. Activities by the US, EU and NATO in Ukraine (2014 coup) and the bad faith breaking of the Minsk agreement by the west were interpreted (correctly) as acts of aggression by Moscow. As ever a complete failure to understand mind sets different from your own.
Yeah, nah. Russia all the way back to the 1600s was distinctly non-Western. From the Russian orthodox church to it’s systems of serfdom and autocratic leadership, Russian society is not Western in any meaningful way.
lol The oleaginous Politelord has, in my estimation, done much to speed up the process of collapse and real English impoverishment. He actually makes me want to throw up.
Hello, Dan, do you have any comments on the recent torture and murder of Gonzalo Lira in the "however imperfect" democratic Ukraine? No? I didn't think so. Ukraine attacked without provocation? You make me sick.

This is surreal. I remember watching Dan almost 20 years ago debating in the EU parliament
In other words, UK politically isolated internationally, not Russia.
Meanwhile, Ukraine head first up to its ankles in the meat grinder.
At what level of corruption or state curation of a democracy does it ceased to be considered so?

I'd use the Karl Popper definition. Can the population realistically change its rulers without anyone having to be exiled or shot?
There hasn't been a meaningful democracy in the UK since 1979.
