A lot of people in the comments have talked about physical accessibility for most of these devices, but there's also mental/psychological accessibility as well. I have a lot of neurodivergencies and mental health issues that make it a challenge to be traditionally productive. I put pretty much all my energy and abilities towards work and school, and everything beyond that is an added challenge. Even little things like brushing my teeth often don't happen as much as they should. When it's a legitimate challenge to get out of bed and shower on my days off, things like spending an hour to individually clean all my makeup applicator products isn't going to happen. Things that seem like lazy shortcuts to a lot of people are lifesavers to other people. I might legitimately get a makeup brush cleaner after this because it's been over a year since I was last able to clean them, and I'd rather risk damaging the bristles than whatever I'm risking now with whatever's in those brushes that I still have to use regularly
As people have previously said, a few of these items directly benefit disabled people, and it’s really harmful to just disparage people using them as being lazy. Items especially marketed towards disabled people often attract a premium, so just a couple of items, like a electric wine bottle opener (which feels no different to an electric tin opener which I also own) that are available at not a horrific price is great. ‘Just use your hands’ is a phrase that’s been used multiple times in the video, I’d like to…. But one of them is pretty useless after my stroke.
You're right of course, at the same time a lot of this TikTok marketing is trying to get abled people to buy stuff they don't need. Of course products that help disabled people do everyday things are important and should be accessible and we need to recognize that. At the same time we need to recognize that when low quality unreliable versions are being marketed as gimmicks and gadgets to abled people it's just encouraging waste. They're cheap because they're going to fail after a few uses if they even work well in the first place.
i have an autobrush, which is similar to the y brush but actually ADA approved. i’m autistic and struggle with brushing my teeth, so having an option that only takes 30sec and minimum effort has really helped my dental hygiene! i hate that the one being promoted on tiktok is probably not ADA approved and off temu
I also have a problem with compulsive stress-related skin picking, to my great detriment. Thank you for talking about it in such a matter-of-fact way, although you only mentioned it in passing, it was helpful for me to listen to this segment. Hydration is key to good skin for me, the less we do to our faces, the better. Stick to SPF, retinol, and maybe a hyaluronic and vitamin c. That's it!
Happy it was helpful to you! It's a tricky habit to break and it took me many years to do it myself. I still find myself falling to old habits sometimes during extra stressful periods...you know when we often naturally break out anyway! 🙃 I'm also a "skinimalist". For the most part I just wash my face with water, hydrate with pure oils like rosehip oil, and soothe with aloe Vera. And I hardly wear makeup anymore which has helped my skin a lot!
A couple of those devices such as the wine opener and the phone remote are actually not only very helpful, but often specifically designed for people with disabilities and dexterity troubles. The number of times these devices get picked up by influencers and then laughed at by other content creators is frustrating. Sure if you are able to hold your phone and tap and swipe, do that, but if you need to lie down and have your phone or tablet in a holder, controlling it with a tiny finger click would be amazing.
I agree! Since becoming a parent and becoming disabled from birth trauma it’s amazing how differently I view the world. Something as simple as standing and brushing my teeth for 2 minutes IS very hard for me and I know it can be for others as well. I think the overall sentiment is don’t buy wasteful products you don’t need, but unless you have experienced or take care of someone with a disability people often don’t think about these uses for these kinds of products.

Yeah, those things are amazing for those who actually need them. Unfortunately these things aren’t being promoted to disabled people. They’re being promoted to able bodied people who will use it once and never again.
These are great accessibility tools! Unfortunately people dont realize you have to promote these products to the general population in order to keep the product around, otherwise they risk going away or the price increases to the point where the disabled individual can't access it

4:50 flushing out your ear is (I THINK) safe, since doctors do it. Some people don't have the dexterity to open wine manually. They can benefit from the mechanized cork remover machine. Imagine trying to open bottles with one hand, or with tremors.
The desk vac is actually pretty handy if you sew! I use minky fabric and stuffing and it gets EVERYWHERE and can irritate my lungs if it floats around too long. I like my little vac to clean it up as I go to keep my workspace around my sewing machine clear. As a disabled viewer, I’d really appreciate if you engaged with feedback you’ve gotten in these comments around how several of these actually are helpful and necessary for folks with physical disabilities, and included disabled voices in these videos moving forward. We absolutely SHOULD all be weary of the things TikTok promotes to us, but resisting them isn’t an excuse to be ableist.
Hi there, I have engaged with and posted responses on several of the comments regarding this. Not all, but that's just because I'm one person and responding to all comments on my videos is not always realistic. I also don't want anyone to feel like I'm giving the same copy/paste reply to comments that are very similar, so I apologize if it seems I wasn't engaging. I also did not intend for this video to come across as ableist in any way and apologize for some of the things I said that, in hindsight, come across that way. It was truly not my intention. As I've mentioned in some other comments back to people, I absolutely agree that there is a use-case scenario for some of these products for some people. The problem that I see is that the people promoting these products on TikTok are A) not disabled themselves, and B) not promoting them for that purpose. I think it would be great if these videos WERE by disabled people to, as you note, help make your voices heard and educate viewers like myself on how they help in these cases. Unfortunately, most influencers are just promoting them to the masses in hopes to make a quick buck, when these products are just wasteful for the majority of the population. I did see another commenter here noting that for them to continue being made they have to be marketed to the masses, which I can absolutely see the argument for. I just wish there were a better way to create products that do help disabled folks, without encouraging able-bodied people who don't need them to purchase so wantonly and wastefully. Again, I'm just trying to encourage conscious consumerism here on the whole and it was not my intention to say anything harmful. You have my sincerest apologies for having done so. I never want to harm any of our viewers, but I am ultimately human and always learning how to be a better one. ❤️
@@sustainablejungle Thank you for your thoughtful response to this concern. I was also a little disappointed in a couple of your takes, however, as you say, you're only human and you can't possibly be expected to think of everything. It can be really difficult to see something from a position you may have never been in before. Ask me how I know🙄. Overall, I really like what you're doing out here and appreciate your content!
@@somewhatwoolly Indeed. It’s not the “you don’t need to automate everything,” it’s the opening a wine bottle with a device that requires fine motor coordination, grip, twisting of the hand and wrist, and strength to work the lever followed by “it’s not that hard.” That’s where it becomes ableist. “Just use a knife” is simple enough and I have a collection of high quality knives that I do use. However, the chopping box allows me to prepare a chopped salad in about 3 minutes when I can’t stand longer than that. It is literally the difference between me eating a nutritious and low(er) impact meal and relying on convenience foods. And for as long as that chopper lasts, I’ve avoided putting non-recyclable trash in the landfill. “Just” only applies to those who can. Also, “just” for funsies, let’s try to think of any of the reasons these devices are not being shown on TikTok (and, hell, UA-cam) by people with disabilities. Start by thinking through your research and scripting tasks, video setup, editing, posting… imagine doing each those with zero energy, cognitive processing impairment, limited use of your hands, and so forth.
@@sustainablejungle I feel like it would be beneficial if you made a response like this but as it's own comment and pin it at the top for people to easily see. I had to scroll through the comments to find this one response. Thank for responding and acknowledging, just hoping for more nuance for these situations in the future.
So, if you go to an audiologist to deal with an impact they'll use a mix of water, vacuum, and/or metal picks. However, that said, you shouldn't be doing it yourself at home. You could make the situation worse. And the tools you buy online will never compare to the ones doctors have that can cost thousands or even tens of thousands of dollars. Edit: Oh, the reason I say this is because as a kid I was totally freaked out by things in my ears and I was traumatized by seeing my mother go through an impact removal because we couldn't get a sitter so I had to go with her.
I came to comments to say kind of the opposite lol. I worked at an urgent care and we did ear irrigation. It cost $75 just to be seen. The irrigation cost more on top of that. The tool we used is no where near some specialized medical equipment. My sister still works for the Dr. that owns the place, but he’s retiring. These devices are so cheap, he just let her have one and she’s getting the other one for me come January. So I’m not sure what you witnessed as a kid. Maybe there’s something stronger out there that I’m unaware of? Now I’m kind of curious lol. Either way, I’m sry you have such terrible memories of whatever the did to your moms ears. I’ve collected quite a few oddly traumatic experiences as a child myself. Eyedrops is my ridiculous childhood trigger 😂
For sure! I'm not trying to say there isn't a use case scenario for some of these products (except maybe all the weird body fluid vacuums?😂). The trouble is that the folks marketing these products on TikTok are largely not disabled nor do they appear to be marketing to that target audience. I'm mostly trying to remind other folks to whom these videos mostly target that these sorts of products are by and large superfluous and wasteful. But again, absolutely not to say that they don't have a place or very helpful utility for certain folks.
I remember seeing that product review of the dumbbell water dispenser and laughing at it. Even the reviewer had a hard time not laughing at some points. Go freaking reviews! 😂
I fell for the pore vacuum like 3 years ago and it was a waste of money. It not only did not work, but again, I wasted money. I researched into getting items that work for my skin and I get actual facials from a professional instead. That toothbrush, the stanley accessories, led mask and other useless junk will create more E-waste.
@Shetooktothewoods it depends on the sauna some are lit really well with no need to be. I was thinking of more traditional ones that mix a good fire with the steam.
This is true, but those are professional medical devices operated by medical professionals. There's no telling what corners were cut in making this or if it's actually as safe as the ones used by ENT doctors. This is just one of those things that's too delicate to safely handle at home.
Thing is a lot of stuff have been made with people with disabilities in mind. Like that electric wine bottle opener would be perfect for my mum who has a lot of problems with her hands and well pretty much all the joints in her body, but then some it also gets marketed to people who don't need it and it blows up. Same with the so called anti-wrinkle straw. It was not invented for that purpose at all but it is sold as such because they know making people freak out about their appearance and aging is lucrative. It's a sad sad world we live in.
the problem with these tiktok/dropship type products is you have no idea whether the product is gonna be reliable, whether they have actual return policies, or what to do if they're crap in the end. i.e. the likelihood that they're gonna become trash is just super high. the other problem is they're marketed as curiosities which 99% of folks don't need but might just buy cos they're interesting... for all of 2 seconds. imo most functioning adults already know what they want/need and what type of stuff they'd buy because they'll keep long-term. it's often the younger crowd who don't really know what they want/need and end up getting suckered into these things. which works even better with the younger demographic on tiktok, and it becomes a giant problem of scale.
The vegetable chopper and wine opener are great for disabled people. The veggie chopper’s actually have replacements you can buy. I am disabled and can’t cook without them.
the ear wax cleaner is actually similar to what doctors use to clean earwax! my husband has earwax overproduction and has needed to get his ears flushed out many times. honestly we would probably benefit from having a cleaner like that at home (if it works) 😂
Guilty of buying the weight loss hula hoop. 🤦♀️. I used to work some shifts at Kohls in the Amazon return dept..the amount of amazon returns that we took was INSANE!!!! But one day a lady was returning the hula hoop...i am a sucker for amazon finds and gadgets (i AM working on identifying my triggers and watching more videos to deinfluence me like these - because watching these videos open my eyes for sure) even after her returning it i went home and put it on my cart. It came and It is painful to use..bulky..my son did get a kick out of trying. But the next day before my shift i was in line doing an amazon return lol
When I get bit by the "want it bug" i ask myself briefly, "how will my life be different when I get this?" Will i be more productive, will it fix something? Will I do more of the thing I should be doing with this new thing?" or will it be forgotten in short order? I have walked away from quite a bit of purchases by asking this. I still give in now and again. But Not as often.
Getting ear wax out with water *can* be safe, but if you think you have genuine ear wax impaction, it's best to see an ear specialist who can get the wax out safely in office.
17:34 The vegetable choppers are pretty bad because the design of most of them can very easily cut the plastic that pushes the vegetables through the blades. I had one i bought a couple of years back and i stopped using it because i started finding pieces of plastic in my veggies.
Yikes! That's scary! I remember my mom had one years and years ago in the As Seen on TV Days, and it really didn't work as well as was advertized. The vegetables kept getting stuck in the grates and the grates themselves were super thin, cheap metal that bent and didn't cut a lot of tougher produce very well.
I was already about to come to comments after the wine bottle opener and say that some people will argue that it’s good for people with disabilities. Then the first comment I saw said that the toothbrusher was good for those with disabilities
the fask masks are funny to me bc theyre just rgb lights. like, sit in front of a gaming pc, same thing :D honestly i get the toothbrush thing tho. 2 mins every day and night, 80 years of our life... also its boring imma be so fr lmao also: idk if you seen those but stanley is INSANE with overconsumption. they have little bags and everything to clip into it. its insane
THings like the wine opener I can understand if you have mobility issues, but thats a tiny market when they are marketed towards very able bodies people. Edit: Why don't you use microwaves any more?
So I used to live in a van traveling full time and we knew we obviously couldn't have a microwave in there, so we weened ourselves off one before moving in. And even now that we don't live in the van anymore, we just got so used to not using one that we never do! It's honestly more useful as storage since I live in a tiny house and my kitchen storage is V limited 😅 And absolutely, I can 100% see the utilities in these for folks with mobility issues or disabilities, but agreed that that's definitely not the target market here, or even representative of the majority of the people promoting them in their videos.
Disappointed by some of the misinformation around red light therapy masks. I encourage you to read the goals to get glowing blog post about LED masks, she goes into a lot of details that pertain to face masks specifically. You're applying LED light panel logic to face masks and that's wildly incorrect. 633nm is actually the proper wavelength for red light, 700nm is pretty irrelevant when it comes to superficial skin improvement.
I am terrible at opening wine. I either break the cork or can’t get it open. I’ve bought many different manual openers hoping they’d work for me. For a long time I only bought screw top wine 😂 The automatic wine opener has been awesome for me.
Honestly some products that seem pointless can be very useful for people with mobility issues. People lose dexterity and strength with age, and some folks live with nerve issues etc. that cause aching and shaking, so on, for their whole lives. Card shufflers and cigarette rolling machines, wine openers, etc. are good examples of devices that seem a bit "lazy" for lack of a better word, but that are actually extremely useful for those that need them.
tik tok pushes products ? Learn something new every day. I do not personally ever go there I here constant bad things about it that I just do not feel the need to go there.
There are 2 different types of brands of the Jet blends. Mine works great and it blends ice, not a lot, but it blends the amount of ice, that is needed, as instructions say, and I don't use Huge thick ice. The Jet Blend I got 2 or 3 years ago. Still works and I love it. The other brand I got, of the "jet blend," which, doesn't chop ice, was cheaper and the blade in it is smaller, and a bit different. So, I would like to make it clear, as a customer, That, your "claim about this product is false." So, if you are going to buy the product, buy the product, the real one. Not anything like it.
Ah, the sweet late-stage capitalist irony of a video about things to not buy from tik tok, where every single one of the dozen ad spots is a tik tok short that was exposed to gamma radiation and grew to a run-time of 12,000 years
Right?! They look so promising I do love the idea of themsince I make smoothies all the time, but the reality is, you just can't make a motor powerful enough to do what a blender needs to do in that small (or cheap) of a package. Best to just invest in a quality one that will last many years.
I assume this is meant to be some sort of insult, but might you mean to refer Ann REARDON, the Australian cookbook author? Perhaps properly learn the names of people you want to use as examples, no?
I used to do vanlife and obviously had to stop using one while we lived in the van, and just got so used to cooking without one, that we've never felt the need to change the habit back. Plus, we now live in a tiny house so it's actually more useful to us as storage.
Who are you, the Ann Reardon of social media influencers and mindful shopping? Looking up scientific research to elaborate on products? Giving sensible advice on our own behaviour? Subbed, nice content. Also no, I definitely need the desk vacuum. I certainly cannot use the tools at the end of my arms that I was born with to swipe the crumbs off my desk and throw them away.
What the fudge, the two hole bottle one threw me way off. I assumed it was going to be some sort of ASMR themed bottle with like... tonaly tuned fidget noisemaker gizmos, or extra crappy seals that make an extra loud "pwop" noise when you screw the top on. But it's just... two holes? That's nowhere near as endearing as Boogie's cereal cup endorsement.
Haha I know, right? I thought the same thing, and I just don't really get the benefit of two holes. They say one for sipping and one for chugging but like... I can also chug using my straw bottle? I just suck on it faster. Again, just seems like trying too hard to stand out in a field of products that doesn't really need improving upon, at least design-wise (we could always stand for water bottle companies to integrate more recycled metals in them!).

Wouldn't the electric wine opener be good for some disabled folk? Like people with hand weaknesses and stuff?
16:27 Ah yes…a gay changer 😂😂😂
I remember seeing that product review of the dumbbell water dispenser and laughing at it. Even the reviewer had a hard time not laughing at some points. Go freaking reviews! 😂
I fell for the pore vacuum like 3 years ago and it was a waste of money. It not only did not work, but again, I wasted money. I researched into getting items that work for my skin and I get actual facials from a professional instead. That toothbrush, the stanley accessories, led mask and other useless junk will create more E-waste.
I think it's cool that the good red light for skin is the same wavelength as the red in a fire. Saunas are vindicated yet again!
Are you burning the sauna down? I don’t recall a meaningful amount of light from fire in saunas…?
@Shetooktothewoods it depends on the sauna some are lit really well with no need to be. I was thinking of more traditional ones that mix a good fire with the steam.
The earwax thing looks similar to what they actually do in clinics for earwax impactions.
I love my box chopper for onions! Nice even size and seriously zero tears. But also I use to make certain dice salads -
the ear wax cleaner is actually similar to what doctors use to clean earwax! my husband has earwax overproduction and has needed to get his ears flushed out many times. honestly we would probably benefit from having a cleaner like that at home (if it works) 😂
A WEIGHTED HULA HOOP?? Lmfao....😂 That is the most ridiculous "work out gadget" I have seen.. 😂
I was given a light therapy tool as a gift and it shocked me. It felt like like a small quick electrical shock.
I see the Stanley snack trays and always wonder where the rest of the popcorn is.
The Shake weight does work. - no lie. helped my muscles get firm. It still works to this day.
I am on facebook right now and see that work out equipment, I am like what in the world now I am seeing ads for the products mentioned in this video.
I was already about to come to comments after the wine bottle opener and say that some people will argue that it’s good for people with disabilities. Then the first comment I saw said that the toothbrusher was good for those with disabilities
the fask masks are funny to me bc theyre just rgb lights. like, sit in front of a gaming pc, same thing :D
honestly i get the toothbrush thing tho. 2 mins every day and night, 80 years of our life... also its boring imma be so fr lmao
also: idk if you seen those but stanley is INSANE with overconsumption. they have little bags and everything to clip into it.
It's honestly more useful as storage since I live in a tiny house and my kitchen storage is V limited 😅
And absolutely, I can 100% see the utilities in these for folks with mobility issues or disabilities, but agreed that that's definitely not the target market here, or even representative of the majority of the people promoting them in their videos.
Lol the caption in the video for the blender says “this product is a gay changer.” Not that there’s anything wrong with that, of course. 😆
8:10 redlight should be with heat
I remember those chopper things, ya I am old too.
tik tok pushes products ?
Ah, the sweet late-stage capitalist irony of a video about things to not buy from tik tok, where every single one of the dozen ad spots is a tik tok short that was exposed to gamma radiation and grew to a run-time of 12,000 years
You can just cause, swimmers ear using water. Only a nurse or dr. should remove your ear wax.
Have tried those blender bottles, totally agree with you. They aren't great
Right?! They look so promising I do love the idea of themsince I make smoothies all the time, but the reality is, you just can't make a motor powerful enough to do what a blender needs to do in that small (or cheap) of a package. Best to just invest in a quality one that will last many years.
I haven't bought any of this and I feel kind of good about myself now LOL
Repeat after me. "We are too poor to buy cheap crap"
American Ann Rierdon
I assume this is meant to be some sort of insult, but might you mean to refer Ann REARDON, the Australian cookbook author?
Perhaps properly learn the names of people you want to use as examples, no?
That remote had me rolling!🤣
Why dont you use a microwave?
Your not supposed to use cotton swabs in your ears.
Again, just seems like trying too hard to stand out in a field of products that doesn't really need improving upon, at least design-wise (we could always stand for water bottle companies to integrate more recycled metals in them!).
are those fake plants next to you? but then you're telling people to not buy more plastic?
Nope, those are 100% real! I propagate all my own houseplants from cuttings when they need a trim so I have an absurd amount of them now. Fake plants are a crime against nature in my household.
@@sustainablejungle oh, that was my bad, I guess I was very surprised at how green they are. i even thought they were plastic, which would just be absurd, oops .
No worries! I know they look quite vivid here. Our video editor I think turns up the vibrancy a bit so it makes everything look a touch more colorful than it does in reality.
Imagine hating on a car air freshener. You’re such an obnoxious grinch.
