    Good points, yet I would argue in favor of the natural leather because of it's durability and comfort compared to any vegan leather and let's face it unless we all become vegetarians or vegans there's always be leather to use.

    The best alternative for plastic straws I saw was pasta. There are long sticks of dried pasta with a hole in the middle and you can throw them in the organic waste after usage. Obviously in areas where straws can be washed and reused this is still better - but for things like fast food chains it could be a better option than paper or plastic as it is biodegradable and does not dissolve at all.

    Almost everything I own comes from resale stores, garage sales, etc. When I'm done with them they go back to the thrift store. They also recycle a lot of what they can't use. Still some ends up in landfill, but I don't have to agonize over which materials were the most wasteful or polluting to manufacture.

    I am thinking a lot about plastics in textiles and clothing. I feel people are easily swayed by the "green signalling" of biodegradable or organic fabrics and clothing, without considering these costs. In my home-sewing practice I would love to use biodegradable materials for everything (for comfort and health, mostly; also eventual disposal), but I am concerned about the environmental costs of their production, and I am skeptical that dyes and finishing are as healthy as we assume or hope. And, is an adequate composting facility available when they need to be disposed? Some of the alternatives I've come up with are: I only sew with surplus or re-circulated textiles. I source fabrics at social enterprise sellers of textile discards and deadstock, and I reuse fabric from damaged clothing, etc. I ahope that putting into use the discarded textiles that occupy my region has some virtue, as an alternative to shipping/trucking them further, incinerating them, or worse, burying them.Thinking of the long range, I also turn my family's textile waste (worn out clothing and towels, etc.) into fill for sturdy cushions (yoga cushions and dog beds, for instance). Eventually these will need to be discarded in a landfill but at least for a while longer they keep in local use a lot of un-usable materials. All in all, we are faced with a lot of unknowns and thus, tough choices... and maybe a few labour-intensive, time consuming alternatives. Thanks for challenging green mythology.

    Reading the comments... growing up we called our containers tupperware even if they were not truly tupperware. Kinda like calling a tissue a kleenex... it might not be a true kleenex but you still know what people mean. Sorry to the tupperware fans out there but my mom didn't go to the parties to get the brand name polypropylene containers we just used what we had and called it tupperware.

    Great points, thank you for going into the details on why the swaps aren't as sustainable as marketing leads them to be. I wish there was more Zero-waste bulk stores around to allow the buyer to bring what they have and leave with what they want. We purchase concentrated laundry detergent and have been using the same large plastic container for 5 years.

      It shouldn't! This is very reputable recipe used by many people and we personally haven't found any residue buildup or performance issues with our dishwasher after months of using it. However, we do highly recommend also adding white vinegar to your dishwasher's rinse aid compartment. This is a good practice no matter what detergent you're using to keep residue on both dishes and your dishwasher to a minimum.

      So you only need one liquid, so either lemon juice OR vinegar (in which case you can also use a couple drops of lemon essential oil for scent). The mixture should be really thick and paste-like so if you added both it would be too runny. I personally prefer using the lemon juice, especially since I use vinegar as my dishwasher's rinse aid, so it's redundant for me to use vinegar in both. 😊

In previous history it has been over 2,000. If it goes below 150 all the vegetation dies. I think CO2 is overblown and pollution is our major issue.

      Some say washing dishes by hand is LESS eco-friendly than using a dishwasher. But considering the resources it takes to make 1 dishwasher, you'd probably never be able to handwash enough dishes to make up for that impact. That's our guess anyways. But in all honesty, we use a dishwasher. Because it's efficient, and life is busy. We're just going to ensure we get as much mileage out of it as possible. Repair Repair Repair.

Logs get trimmed down to be milled into 2x4, 2x6, 6x6 etc. That still leaves a pile of bark, off cuts, wood chips and sawdust behind. Those materials are turned into plywood, osb, sent to pulp mills or turned into pellets / hog fuel for boilers. People have a choice between single use PET, the reusable harder plastic or glass. The bottles get thoroughly cleaned and the labels taken off and then a machine scans them for wear and tear. Then they get refilled with new caps placed on them. One bottle can be reused up to 25 times if plastic and up to 50 times if glass. If you buy an entire crate of drinks, you can just return the crate with the bottles inside and the crate itself has about 3€ deposit too. I think this system works and anything below an industrial scale wouldn’t. However, many people continue to buy the PET bottles with 0,25€ deposit because it’s cheaper and available in discount stores too. These get shredded and melted into new bottles. On a somewhat unrelated note, since this year many restaurants and cafes, even Burger King offer reusable coffee/soda/ice cream cups called Recup for 2€ deposit that you can return in any other participating store. Very convenient, since most cafes at the train station, many gas stations and all burger kings do this. Only mc Donald’s has its own version that can only be returned at other mc Donald’s. Sadly I see many people can’t be bothered to get these despite getting the 2€ back at return.

    I've watched few videos about the topic and I must say that Sustainable Jungle's video feels like a warm hug into the sustainable life. I've always been trying to respect my environment and as a kid I've put my waste to bin, as a teenager I've tried to put my waste into correct bin and as an almost- thirty young adult I am trying to reduce the waste I create in general. Compared to other channels I follow, SJ fills me with hope rather than dread. I can leave a habitable planet behind, maybe a bit in rough shape but, our love can heal in each small step at a time. Much love from Turkey <3

      Just saying "don't use posh mark" doesn't help anyone at all. If you are not going to give some sort of a reason why not to use it, then why did you post at all?

    Love and support this! Thanks for sharing - this video is so informative! I'd love to hear/see more about how you can properly start a fire while camping!

    • @sustainablejungle
      @sustainablejungle 17 днів тому

      Thanks so much for your kind words and happy this was helpful! The single best practice for safely building a fire out camping is by using only established pits and rock rings. You should never build your own ring or dig a pit. If there isn't one there (such as in many backcountry locations) stick to a camp stove. If there is a proper place to build a fire, I personally like using a log cabin style fire as this is the safest and most stable formation (teepee styles can collapse easily and sentdsparks and embers flying). Simply arrange your larger logs in a square, crosshatched design, 2-3 layers of logs deep. Then build a small mount of tinder (twigs, pine needles, uncoated paper if you need it) on top and ignite this. As it burns, the embers will fall down the center of the "cabin" and ignite the larger pieces of wood, as opposed to possibly getting blown away or scattered by having larger wood fed on top. Obviously add logs as needed, trying to keep the same formation, but be sure to keep it small, in control, and fed with only as much wood as you plan on staying awake to fully burn through. Never burn trash or food scraps in the fire, as this can pollute the pit or attract wild animals. And then when you do leave the site or go to bed for the evening, use water to ensure the fire is fully cool to the touch. I hope this helps!

      @@sustainablejungle this 100% helps! I've never tried camping with a fire before, but I have a reservation with a campground that has a firepit (and currently no burn bans) so I'm excited to safely put these tips to use 🥰

    The old seeds that were not genetically modified, unfortunately, are no longer available. They have been collected by highly secretive organizations and placed in a seed bank because they know that genetically modified seeds will make the future of humanity full of unprecedented diseases. They will release them again once they achieve their goals, known as the "Golden Billion." However, there are still some seeds that somewhat resemble the old seeds, but they only resemble them and still retain some of the characteristics of the old seeds. I live in my African country, Morocco. Imagine that some organizations have taken all the original old seeds and replaced them with seeds that cannot be replanted. The problem with organic farming is that it requires organic soil that has not been exposed to pesticides and retains all the friendly organisms and bacteria, in addition to organic seeds that are free from pollution. That's why people talk about the benefits of, for example, pumpkin, and when you eat pumpkin, you don't feel or find any benefit. The simple answer is that they are talking about 15th-century pumpkin, not the pumpkin of our present time. I really dream of traveling to America and starting a big project and an association dedicated to organic farming. It is indeed a beautiful feeling to serve the community. You might ask, why America and not your country? The answer is, first, the capabilities in the country are very weak, in addition to harassment from companies that do not care about human health, only material profit. The problem is that my mother is sick with parkinson, and I am sure she will be cured if she follows an organic diet, drinks healthy water, and lives in a healthy environment. All diseases can be cured, and the body is always ready to heal itself if helped with a healthy regimen. There is nothing natural: meats rich in hormones, even fish have not been spared from pollution. Thank you for explaining

      I know they should only be used for insulation - and depending on council requirements would probably be required to have an anti-flammable coating.
