Tangier Island: Among the First U.S. Climate Refugees?

  • The small island of Tangier sits 12 miles off the coast of Virginia. It’s a peaceful, salt-of-the-earth kind of place, with only 600 full-time residents, most of whom have known their neighbors-commercial crabbers, watermen, schoolteachers, parishioners-for generations. Shortly, however, that may all come to an end.
    As soon as 25 years from now, Tangier is expected to disappear into the sea. The people who live there, along with the residents of similar coastal towns and islands threatened by sea-level rise, may become among the first U.S. climate refugees.

      How do you cope with the fact that the island will be gone in your life time? Your situation kind of reminds me a little of of the village I grew up in the Great Plains, they are both disappearing (though for different reasons).

      TC IronBear its hard to know that it will vanish in about 20 to 25 years. Each time I visit i can see the beach shorting and parts of the island filling with water (especially if there is a storm). Honestly I dont know what I'll do when the island will vanish. My friends and family will be without a home and an island the i love and grew up as a child will be gone.

    A wonderful unique place that I have only been to once. I would like to sail back many times. Worth preserving. The combination of erosion, subsidence and sea level rise has many causes - but the result is the same: loss of land. Maryland rebuilt Poplar Island off the Eastern Shore, and did it just for the birds. How about Virginia do the same for Tangier? Gov. McAuliffe was no friend of the island.

    Tangeir is just the latest Island to sink in Chesapeake Bay as the Bay is an Earthquake Fault and has swallowed a lot of Islands in the Past as it expands. There was Turtle Egg Island, and Sharps Island, and Parker's Island. But today, more than 400 of those islands in Maryland and Virginia cannot be found on modern navigational maps of the Bay, wrote William Cronin in his 2005 book, Disappearing Islands of the Chesapeake Bay.

    Tangier needs to create a positive community outlook about the future of their island. Remember the old school paper drives years ago? They should have an ongoing sand and rock drive. Make it a fun thing that anyone visiting on the ferry boats would bring a sack of one or the other “to be a part of saving Tangier”. Have a festival there once a year around the idea of bringing rocks, with prizes for who brings the most, the biggest. Contract with their oyster buyers, empty shells must be double returned. They could reverse erosion that way. Every year they did it could be one year added to their history.

      It is also far cheaper. This would not be the first time the US abandoned a town because of environmental reasons. There is a town in Pennsylvania where a coal mine fire under the town made it unlivable, so instead of putting out the fire and refortifying the mines, they just moved the people.

    Question, they are now building islands. There's a bunch over in the U.A.E. I understand that they won't be able to put land UNDER a home but I'm sure there's a part of the island that is the lowest point without any houses. They could build up that area then you could moved houses over there. If you're all related you could do it like the Amish raise barns.

      As Karl said, what a cop out. Voting for someone who enacts policies that are destroying your home and livelihood is a, quite frankly, idiotic thing to do. It is right to point that out, especially since the policies they voted for affect us all.
      As for Obama proposals that would have helped to slow down the destruction of Tangier Island, staying in the Paris Climate accords for one, killing coal ASAP for two, investing in American solar panel manufacturing for three, not forbidding California from setting stricter car emission standards for four, and the list goes on. These aren't even the most "radical" (I use that term sparingly, since Obama was a center right politician a la Merkel by European standards) policies that Obama enacted.
      I'm not even a progressive (seems like progressive is code word for "anyone that disagrees with me" for the alt-right), as Social Libertarian that is anti-identity politics and progun I am for policies that maximize the individual freedoms and happiness of everyone (Schwarzenegger type fiscal Conservative, social Liberal). Global Warming runs counter to that, perhaps more than any other issue.

    The Arctic Ocean is warming up, icebergs are growing scarcer and in some places the seals are finding the water too hot according to a report to the Commerce Department yesterday from the Consulate at Bergen, Norway.
    Reports from fishermen, seal hunters and explorers all point to a radical change in climate conditions and hitherto unheard of temperatures in the Arctic zone.
    Exploration expeditions report that scarcely any ice has been met as far north as 81 degrees 29 minutes.
    Soundings to a depth of 3,100 meters showed the gulf stream still very warm.
    Great masses of ice have been replaced by moraines of earth and stones, the report continued, while at many points well known glaciers have entirely disappeared.
    \Very few seals and no white fish are found in the eastern Arctic, while vast shoals of herring and smelts which have never before ventured so far north, are being encountered in the old seal fishing grounds.
    Within a few years it is predicted that due to the ice melt the sea will rise and make most coast cities uninhabitable.
    I must apologize. I neglected to mention that this report was from November 2, 1922, as reported by the AP and published in The Washington Post 98 years ago

With 1 pre-rec: Make sure the people at the top listen to the overwhelming consensus of scientists. So as much as I felt for them while I watched this video, I kept asking myself "how many voted for this CaC"? Hate to say it, but 87% lessens my worry "tremendously", believe me. The 97% claim was debunked long time ago I'm surprised its even brought up anymore. Climate scientists that are considered climate change deniers are on the list and what they are saying is yes to some degree but not to the extent the alarmists are claiming. Therefore the list is deceitful.
      This is the typical alramists " Well ..well 97% say its so." followed with a link to skepticalscience.com (ironic name being there is no skepticism involved).
      Early this year Michael "Hockey Schtick" Mann took Tim Ball to court in Canada over slander and when the judge issued Mann to provide the court with his evidence he used in his "hockey schtick" graph Mann failed to supply any and lost his case. I empathize with them, but there are plenty of other places in America to move to. There isn't anything intrinsically special about Tangier Island.

    • @depotshredder6938
      @depotshredder6938 6 років тому +11

      Actually, that's where you're wrong. The people of Tangier Island have lived there for centuries (pretty much since the Europeans came to North America), and their speech is actually the closest example to Shakespearian English of any current group of people. There's some serious historical significance to that island, and it'll be a shame to see it underwater.

      Jon Lott - As our coastline erodes and sea level rises, you can keep up your irresponsible rhetoric. The point is that these people are getting an up close and personal example of climate change (which most of the world acknowledges). Besides the financial burden (think they can "sell" their homes?), this is just the beginning. Are you going to say that to the residence of The Keys? How about New Orleans, Tybee Island, GA?

    • @MrJonLott
      @MrJonLott 6 років тому +1

      I'm not saying global warming isn't a problem. I'm not saying New Orleans isn't special. I'm saying there is nothing particularly great about Tangier Island, and that "my grand daddy and his grand daddy lived here" is kind of a lame reason to find a flooding island desirable.

    Those projections about the amount of sea level rise, vary wildly. When there is that much
    uncertainty built into the computer models, you really can't put too much credence in the predictions. 8 inches to 20 feet? All you have there, is fuzzy guesswork.
    Island life is special. I hope that a way is found, to preserve the culture and flavor of Tangier.

    At one point in Earth's Life, MUCH if not ALL of The United States was underwater! If BOTH icecaps (north and south) ever melt, the whole country is done for!

    • @fredex8
      @fredex8 6 років тому +2

      In the absolute extreme that every scrap of ice melted it is estimated that sea levels would rise by 80m or so. The effects of this would be totally catastrophic but it is a long way from putting all the land underwater. The bit of land we call the United States was never all underwater or anywhere close. If you go to canyons or places like monument valley with the isolated towering pinnacles that are caused by wind or water erosion the land would have been much higher millions of years ago so whilst it is true that at times there was less ice and therefore higher seas there was also higher land at times too. Taller cliffs on the coast of some places instead of beaches too which decreases the potential for water to come inland. At a rise of 80m you'd probably lose maybe 10% of the US at most. Though flooding elsewhere would be frequent due to much more frequent and powerful hurricanes and tsunamis. More important than the sea level rise itself is the cause of that rise because if we ever actually did get to that extreme we'd be totally screwed from the heat anyway.

    • @pulsarstargrave256
      @pulsarstargrave256 6 років тому

      Some of your info sounds a little in error because it defies computer models I've seen and the very real evidence of fossils of sea creatures being found near mountain tops. Also I never said "ALL" of the U.S. was underwater but "much" of it because obviously the remains of land creatures such as T-Rex and others have been found here. Still, the bulk of what you said makes sense.

    • @fredex8
      @fredex8 6 років тому

      Pulsar Stargrave Well you said 'if not all' so I just wanted to clarify. Lots of it was underwater at one point hence salt flats and deserts that were once sea floors but it is important to recognise that this doesn't always have to be the result of there being more water, but simply water being in different locations and the landscape being different. Fossils at the top of mountains doesn't mean those mountains were once surrounded by seas so much as if does that they didn't use to be mountains and the land was pushed up by tectonic plates colliding. The key point was simply that there isn't actually enough water on the planet to cover all the land due to ice melting (there are some good sea level rise mapping tools out there to experiment with and see the results) but that the situation is still dire nonetheless and even an increase of 1m would be devastating to the world by causing mass migration, increasing how extreme extreme weather events are and reducing our food outputs.

    • @pulsarstargrave256
      @pulsarstargrave256 6 років тому

      Fair enough about Point A and plate tectonics but some of the models I've seen took these into consideration. There was more water covering the United States just as the oxygen content in the atmosphere was richer than today, leading to taller trees and bigger creatures. I do hope you're right about your calculations regarding whether there's "not enough water" to cover the states! But California's becoming a distant twin of Japan makes for compelling science fiction!

    • @fredex8
      @fredex8 6 років тому

      It depends what period in time you're talking about as there have been periods with higher CO2 and others with higher oxygen concentration. For instance the fossils of those enormous insects like dragonflies maybe 10 times bigger than anything today generally indicate much higher oxygen concentration 300 million years ago during the Carboniferous period. This period seems to have started as the result of CO2 levels previously being far higher creating the conditions for much larger and more widespread plant life eventually resulting in a much more oxygen rich environment able to support giant insects like these but as a result ended in an ice age that would have killed them off.
      For the majority of history CO2 levels have been much higher than today and it took periods like the Carboniferous to sequester away this carbon in the form of coal (which is the literal meaning of Carboniferous) in order to bring down global temperatures such that life like ours was possible.
      That is what makes our current usage of fossil fuels worrying. These previous climatic shifts have taken place over tens or hundrds of millions of years but we've returning millions of years worth of carbon to the atmosphere in just a hundred years and it is clear from history where this will lead. Rising sea levels are a concern but are ultimately just a symptom of the increased temperatures brought on by carbon and methane emissions and that will ultimately cause more problems than the sea level rise alone.

      kevin mcshane do you realize that those ancient changes, whether entering or leaving an Ice Age, occurred over millions of years? It wasn’t over 100 years, which is the case now. There was enough time for animals to evolve with the changes, right now animals are going extinct because of this, they don’t have time to evolve.

    Peoples hatred of Donald trump made this comments section disgusting. Just because you may disagree with someone’s political views doesn’t mean you should turn this into a joke. These people are coping with the fact that their home is disappearing. It would be cool for the people who let Donald trump live in their head rent free 24/7 could put politics aside for once and have some compassion for human beings in crisis. It never ends anymore. Constant bickering back and forth about politics. I sure hope it’s just a fad and it goes away and we can all be nice to each other for a change.
    And no I didn’t vote for Donald trump nor am I racist, right wing, left wing, liberal, conservative or any other label people feel the need to put on others these days.

If they are voting for an asshole who is doing everything he can to promote the use of fossil fuels, , to the point of actually stopping California from having better emission standards, then yes they do pay bear part of the responsibility. We shouldn’t have to bail them out when they’re doing this to themselves.
