Imagine how intense it must feel to play piano on a raft next to a crumbling glacier.
I bet cold fingers make it somewhat difficult to play.
... and terrifying. Calving icebergs can spawn huge waves, far bigger than earthquakes. The biggest waves ever were associated with landslides that hit an inlet or lake.
tommy: I love glaciers. I visited two in Alaska, and one on Switzerland, which I was able to walk on. There is something so very primal about a glacial landscape. I felt like I had some kind of deep ancestral memory of it. It is so sad that they are melting away.
Probably his Dying Wish...😉
Ludovico Einaudi is awesome.
Don't tell me what to do
**dies in Longyearbyen**
Now you started an outbreak of plague, Richard Nixon..
@C caymer Yeah, I was playing along..
r/whoosh
Oi up, you got a licence for that mate?
Nixon, why did you kill the gold standart back in 1971?
Watch out where the huskies go
And don't you eat that yellow snow
@4:38 no.. just no.. That's not what he said.. At all. Not even close. It's like you just guessed what a priest might have said and picked some random verse. The actual translation is:
"No one is allowed to destroy them or seduce them, Jesus says. Not even for your shortcomings. That you know your flaws is a strength, rather than a weakness"
I'm learning Norwegian and I knew the translation was wrong, though I didn't understand exactly what he was saying. Thanks for the translation.
goes to show, they also filled it with Americans, instead of actual Norwegians.
@@ollielife1 yes America wants to conquer Svalbard and this video is a propaganda
Thank you! I picked up on that. So glad someone commented. 👍
@See Quinn they want Svalbard because 1. oil 2. minerals 3. strategic Arctic location. all the more reasons
What I learned from the comments:
Guy playing piano is awesome, but they misspelled his name.
They didn't translate what the priest was quoting from Jesus at all.
People die a lot in Longyearbyen (including from polar bears) but they are cremated because it's an island.
As someone who's been a newspaper editor in Longyearbyen for ten years, the premise of this article/video is somewhat inaccurate since people have had their ashes buried in the cemetery in Longyearbyen and had their ashes scattered across the sea/land nearby as recently as this year (it's the concerns related to burying actual bodies that makes that illegal here). And the title is definitely wrong - people have died here from polar bear attacks, extreme weather, air/boat/vehicle accidents and plenty of other things. The policy refers more to the terminal ill, infirm elderly, etc.
So the title is clickbait?
"The policy refers more to the terminal ill, infirm elderly, etc."
Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness, at least here in the USA.
Why don't people have the Liberty to end their own Life if they and they alone believe it would make them Happy to do so, possibly to remove their own suffering?
@@charlesbrightman4237 Well first of all it is not America, and second, i dont understand that you ask this question while it is clearly explained in this 9 minute video
@@user-yl4hb8dg9l First, I know this video is not about or in America, but being human is still being human. Don't people everywhere have an inherent 'right' to die, even if it's illegal, as evidenced by many people who commit suicide by some means even in those countries where it is illegal? There are many ways one can die.
Second: Here is a copy and paste of my other comment for this video in it's own thread:
"CONSIDER THE FOLLOWING:
When people die, (and their pets and other animals too), have their body cremated and have their ashes put into a crater on the Moon and/or Mars to help enrich the soil. By giving up our very body when we are done with it, other species might be able to actually continue to survive. ONLY those species who make it off of this Earth and out of this solar system continue to consciously survive, everybody else is going to die and go extinct.
Either at least one species makes it out of this solar system one day, somehow, someway, somewhere, in some state of existence, OR none do. If none do, then all of life itself is ultimately meaningless in the grand scheme of things. It wouldn't matter how rich and powerful an entity was or not, or what kind of job they had, or house they lived in, or car they drove, or even how many descendants they might or might not have had. Nothing at all would matter due to no conscious entity being left to care about anything or anyone ever again, at least not from this Earth.
Not only whole businesses could be set up to do these things, to even help fund the space programs, but what better 'headstone' than the Moon and/or Mars them self? And eventually, the same could be done for planets and moons beyond Mars.
"
Oh geez. You're a newspaper editor and you don't get the significance of a catchy title? Really?
Love that ending with the dude on the piano!
Screwed&Chopp what song was he playing?
@@johnyboylovesmelissa his name is Ludovico Einaudi and the song "Elegy for the Arctic"
@@Jacob-yj3rx thank you for writing his name correctly as they did indeed misspell it... :D
Bravo.
That's exactly how I looked the last time I was playing an elegy on a barge near a collapsing glacier edge!
The cool thing about Longyearbyen, is that because of the Golf stream, it's extremely mild compared to its latitude. I just typed "Longyearbyen weather" in Google (it's December 15th) and it's 1 degree Celsius! Plus one! Can you believe that? It's actually colder here in my city (Budapest) right now.
Well, the average temperature in Longyearbyen has been higher than the average for the last 90 months or so..
The temperature yesterday was higher than normal for this time of year and it's higher than normal today (+4 Celsius) also. Tomorrow it will probably be more like the normal with -10 celcius.
What we should have here now is snow and temperatures below zero degrees Celsius.

troublesomebirdsong not the same
Yeah, but then they'd have missed out on seeing the area. I had the bad luck to miss out on a (free!) trip to the Antarctic and it's one of my few regrets that I didn't make it there.
lol at thinking a search result is better than an expedition
Yeah, but then they would have to title this with something less click-baity. XD
That would have made for a really interesting documentary
"I don't know if there's an ancient plague, but maybe" *proceeds to load gun to deal with what is obviously zombie uprising*
How long do they put you in jail if you die there? Imagine being the guy who steals a car and has to be stuck in jail with a bunch of corpses of people who died there and got arrested.
Imagine spending a year in a Svalbard jail surrounded by rotting corpses. That would be an extremely Longyear.
The subtitles of the priest are completely wrong... Like, the only thing that is correct is the word: "Jesus". Did they deliberately pervert the subtitles to make them more relevant to the video?
so what did he say?
@@xXxSkyViperxXx I am Swedish, not Norwegian, so it is like 90% intelligible, but this is my translation: "No one is allowed to obliterate it or seduce it, says Jesus. Also not for your [unintelligible for me]. That you know of your flaw is rather a strength, than a [unintelligible for me]."
I speak Spanish and I notice Spanish to English subtitles aren’t exactly accurate, or could be translated a better way. A lot of the time they just don’t get to the meat of what was said and just translate something that fits. It made me realize you can’t always trust subtitles.
@@be.A.b Well, this was not just badly translated. This was a complete fabrication.

This video had next to no focus
Well no, if it did, it would be outright plagiarism from Sam (Wendover Productions / Half as Interesting, can't remember which channel) who did this exact video a few months ago.
It was pretty sharp focus. A few shots the focus moved a bit but that was done on purpose for artistic visuals.
See, i interpreted focus to mean figuratively, as in the video meandered for nine minutes to stretch out a 30 second piece of trivia not literally as in videography.
Nam Thai not camera focus brain. The focus of what the video was trying to portray.
Well, it could have been an excuse for a company paid vacation.
The polar bear didn't have a connection with you, it was stalking you as a potential meal.
Sounds like a pretty intimate connection.
@@jimbertido2800 You really feel connected when your arm is inside of the Bears mouth. It's so much fun.
Clearly these people have a connection to their surroundings, a true sense of culture and home. Ignorant to assume you know more about a polar bear's intentions than a man who has lived among them.
@Claystead While it does happen, we must remember that for the sheer number of people living on the planet, we actually don't have that many wild animals attacking humans. There are a lot of wild predators that are larger than us and much stronger and faster than us. Millions. Why, then, do we not see more deaths from these predators stalking and killing any humans who venture outside of large cities or suburban areas? The fact of the matter is that there are a lot of deaths, but not nearly as many as you would think considering how many large carnivorous predators there are in the wild.
The main reason is because through natural selection, the predators have developed a natural aversion to human contact or any signs that a human being is nearby or hunting them. There was a very large window of time where humans were actively killing in defense and hunting these predators, where it was fair game for humans to kill them whether it be in defense or in an attempt to eliminate them as a potential threat through hunting. The predators that reproduced were predators that did not fuck with humans. No predator on earth can take on 50 or so spear/bow wielding marathon runners that can work collectively and is each individually more intelligent than you in every conceivable way. There is no way for individual predators to stand up to us. The most dangerous animal to humans after the malaria spreading mosquito, is other humans.
@Claystead Interesting! Thanks for the insight
Beautiful video.
I was digging a hole to plant a tree up in the north in Canada with a French guy, we dug less then a 30cm and hit something hard. They failed to mention the anthrax outbreak in the Northwest Territories, Canada, only a few years ago. Hundreds if not thousands of bison were killed and burned due to the spread. I've lived in the Northwest Territories for over 25 years and have heard elders native to this area talk about how the weather and land is changing. Research is being done to study the permafrost up here melting and causing land to slough in on itself, also releasing gasses that contribute to thawing. Forest fires are growing in numbers and intensity due to lack of precipitation and drier trends over the years. I've been fighting forest fires for the last 5 years and I've witnessed that first hand.
The man playing piano at the end of the video reminds me of the men playing their violins while the Titanic sank.

Too funny 😂😂
I know right! You also can't care about anything nor bring awareness to a cause if you use a computer because parts of it may be sourced unethically! It's almost like people have to learn what they are doing is harmful BEFORE change may happen on a societal level. Why would the planes suddenly all be electric or waste free? The first step is awareness. And BTW, transportation as a whole only accounts for 14% of emissions on a global scale, planes & cars aren't the problem even with their dismal current environmental impact. All is well then. Keep on jetting around the globe on unnecessary jaunts to whinge in exotic locations. Because nobody but you is 'aware'.
@@leiferikkson2616 The IPCC is actually very focused on researching all sorts of climate issues, and are actually very concerned with natural systems which could potentially result in positive feedback loops. In the long term (geologically speaking) climate does change naturally, both up and down, what is concerning is that currently we seem to be experiencing a far more rapid increase in global temperatures than ever recorded. What is important to consider here as well is that this is a global average, some regions are actually increasing in temperature at a lower rate than expected, which often gets blown out of proportion by climate change skeptics. However, the Arctic is particularly susceptible to temperature increases due to the vast variety of feedback loops to do with ice albedo (if there is less ice, less cosmic radiation is reflected and so Earth heats up more) and permafrost melting (permafrost contains vast amounts of Methane and other greenhouse gases, which when released will also further increase global warming) and so on. We know that mankind also releases huge amounts of greenhouse gases, black carbon and particulate matter, which when combined with natural emissions will most likely be disastrous for mankind and natural ecosystems. The Earth has many complex systems which are very difficult to understand and piece together, but the more you research the more you realise how much of a difference we are really making. Not to mention all the other environmental impacts we have through our vast amounts of waste and disregard for the natural environment. Not trying to lecture but trying to help explain the issue a little better :) (ps I am a climate scientist)

MG went there February 2017. Was insane. Snow mobiled in arctic storm and dog sledded to an ice cave
At the beginning i was wondering why this video had those dislikes and after watching the video i got that those dislikes were from climate change deniers.
I think it is true that very probably some of these dislikes are due to climate change denialism. But actually reading through the comments, you can find plenty of criticism directed at the translation of the priest sermon, also at the misleading nature of the title.
I think the term is anthropomorphic climate change skeptics.
Producers of this corny video are the climate change deniers. They seem to believe the climate should not be changing but since it has always been changing it is they who are in denial. Then, they attempt to invert the true meaning of the term "climate change denier" which not only makes them deniers but also deceivers.
Nice video, except the conclusion, that is just nonsensical.
Which part of the end are you talking about?
There are dozens of towns and cities located above the Arctic Circle. Thousands of people are buried in permafrost every year, and have been for centuries.

A very interesting video report about Longyearbyen, Norway
Gotta love how the title says you can't die there yet the description immediately says you just cannot be buried...
I think the title is a bit misleading. Not being allowed to die and not being allowed to be buried in a place shouldn't be the same thing
It is the world's northernmost settlement of any kind with more than 1,000 permanent residents. There are inhabited places that are higher in latitude.
Excellent work
