- Within the next 30 years, up to 20% of Bangladesh will disappear beneath the water as rivers and sea levels rise. This will put as many as 30 million people on the move.
Climate researchers say it’s just the first manifestation of a process that will soon be happening all over the world. This film takes us on a journey to the Bangladesh of the future, a country that’s set to suffer terribly from climate change. The Meghna River has already turned into a torrent that’s nine kilometers wide in places, a mass of moving water that flows ten times faster than the Rhine. "It demolished the house I moved into as a bride,” Momtaj Begum says. "It’s where I gave birth to my four children. It breaks my heart.” She and her son are saving what they can before the river sweeps everything relentlessly into the sea. Her village looks like a battlefield. The Meghna has cut deep into the ground, and is literally ripping the soil away beneath the residents’ feet.
Momtaj Begum and her family of eight have already been turned into climate refugees. Her village was swallowed by the river, along with many others. Around 2,000 displaced people like her arrive in the Bangladeshi capital Dhaka every day. With a population topping 20 million and a crumbling infrastructure, the city is on the verge of collapse. The climate refugees that arrive here are now forcibly moved on again, this time by the government. Shantytowns are destroyed by police raids and bulldozers. And what’s happening in Bangladesh is only the beginning. Before long, every country in the world will begin to notice the effects of rising sea levels.

I am from Bhola and this is the harsh reality of our community. India should be just on water distribution, 1st world countries should reduce their carbon emission and pay us for their destruction or allow migration for work, moreover, the government must have a sustainable plan.

Bangladesh seems to have gotten the worst possible geographic situation. You get this tiny plot of swampland, downriver from a neighboring country that doesn't like you (India), who pollutes whatever they want into your country. Pack 165M people in there who are an opposite religion to their neighbors, and to boot they are the first to get hit by climate change, with a government that can't out-engineer their problems like the Dutch.
They actually have the right to say life is not fair.
No one have the rights. They got themselves in that position in the 1st place.

Elliott Straube, things are not as apocalyptic for Bangladesh as you are saying or this DW documentary is showing. Read recent World Bank and Asian Development Bank(ADB) report on Bangladesh. Bangladesh is among the 5 fastest growing economy in the world and it's GDP growth rate is the highest in Asia Pacific region. Bangladesh currently 30th largest economy in the world will leapfrog many countries in the next few decades.
Population of Bangladesh will stabilize and possibly start to shrink within the next 30 years as Bangladesh already achieved replacement fertility rate of 2.1 child per woman. Life expectancy, literacy, per capita income are rising rapidly. To tackle the climate change Bangladesh is implementing 'Delta Plan 2100AD' project. Under this project Bangladesh is spending 37 billion US dollar by 2031 which include river control, building dam, dyke, coastal defence infrastructure etc.
And contrary to this documentary's assertion, Bangladesh is actually growing in landmass due to billion tons river silt accumulation in the Bay per year. This documentary only shown the river erosion, but it remained silent about the river silt accretion. Bangladesh's river silt accretion is greater than river erosion. By this natural process, Bangladesh gained 1000 sq. km land in the last 50 years. It can be easily enhanced by implementing land reclamation project similar to what many other countries are doing.
I understand, DW and other western media using Bangladesh as a worst example to awake the conscience of general public in the west. But dong so, they are exaggerating the helplessness and hopelessness of Bangladesh. Which is not helpful. Flood and cyclone is something, Bangladesh is dealing with thousands of years and have to deal in future as well. But it's damage and destruction can be greatly minimize by modern infrastructure and overall development of the country. Bangladesh is marching in that direction.
Nice observation but i disagree with the points you stated... Before typing u should have once seen Bangladesh map and what all river meet there.... Have u heard of river brahmaputra .... China has constructed many dam on that river and also controls the water.... It is a major river for north east population.... If you are telling that we Indians are polluting the river that flow in Bangladesh because we have religious animety then i must say ur thinking is similar to ur ancestors who divided the one great nation bharat.... Go get some time and see how china has polluted river brahmaputra. Climate change is a world issue which is created by each an ever human not by selective people or country.... Hats off to Bangladesh for accepting the ROHINGYA refugees (from Myanmar) and atleast building a new Island for housing. Even slum dwellers in other countries would like to live on such a facility. This island should then serve as a reminder to Myanmar of the debt they owe to Bangladesh. Maybe someday a child of that island would teach something to Myanmar.

Population explosion is almost under control in Bangladesh (except refugee camps) now. People in the rural areas are also nature loving, green preserving. Most nature disturbing activities happen in the towns and near by areas due to the insatiable crave of the wealthy people and in the name of development.

The problem is not the climate but how a fast growing population with poor infrastructures and a weak and parasite government deal with a rude climate and easy flooding lands.
Reporting more damages or dead people after a storm don't necessary mean that the climate is changing or getting worse. Having more people under a storm increase the risk of death for more people. Having more people with poor infrastructure increase the rate of damage. Both are not necessary connected with climate change.

An extensive network of gigantic canals could alleviate the problem. The canals would store the floodwaters waters during the wet season and it could used in the dry season. Silt dug out of the canals would also create high ground upon which permanent crops could be planted and homes constructed. And they could also practice aquaculture in the canals and use to transport produce by boats. Such canals could be quickly dug with the great amount of labor available in Bangladesh.
I don't think these low lying places were meant to have so many humans in the first place......it's sad to see so many people suffering

I watch with sorrow, the sadness of people living unsanitized environment, heartbreaking, I need to take a deep breath, I don’t know how these people gonna live happily. No justice for the poor as the saying goes, but the main problem is the sea level rising, flooding the land and houses. I only wish for a miracle that land will be dried and create an atmosphere of a healthy climate. Only God’s know what the future transpire for Bangladesh poor peoples.

Dams are stopping the floods. If there were no dams, the flooding would be bigger each year.
@@artman7780 during wet seasons they open the dams so they dont help at all. the issue with the dams is that during the dry season less and less water funnel through the country, causing rivers to dry or have reduced water levels, leading to erosion which just makes it so much worse during wet seasons.

India doesn’t produce nearly the amount of CO2 emissions of either Europe, China and the USA in both absolute or in pet-capita terms.
India forcing so much policy for Bangladesh. They build dams violating international laws. They are now forcing Bangladesh to build Sundarban Power Plant. India also interfere with Bangladesh's foreign investments. They force the Bangladesh government not to take anymore direct investment from China.

This is not only the story of Bangladesh but also every climate vulnerable countries. The developed countries are indiscriminately emitting CO2 and other GHG while people in underdeveloped countries are suffering. But,it is true that sooner or later Developed countries also need to take the burden of climate change vulnerabilities. So,it will be wise decision to take stern initiatives to protect our planet unitedly.

We had the biggest natural disaster in BC Canada two years ago. The flooding wiped out towns and farming communities. Some farmers lost their dairy cows. People arrived with trailers and tried to help the animals get to dry land. Our highway through the mountains that connects BC to the rest of Canada was destroyed in over 20 places. I’ve never seen anything like it. Now we are in a drought and our province was burning all summer. We still don’t have rain after five months. Climate change is real folks.
I have friend in Bangladesh and videos like me allows me to understand and be more concerned about the issue. Thank you for the video to create awareness. I hope that these people will stay safe.

They can come up with an excavator to tear down the slums where Refuge Seekers are, but they can't use those same Excavators & sediment traps, to ford up & protect the banks of the rivers, in the areas where these same Refuge Seekers came from?

All of the major and rich powerful countries such as USA, Germany, France, India, Chine and many others are the reason behind weather change, global warming. India emit more CO2 then the rest of the all south asian countries combined. They emit more and more CO2 that harm the planet. They burn fossil fuel for cars, industries and earn billions of dollars. And we as a third world country suffers more. Specially those people leaving in low laying tropical areas. The rich countries earn more and more and we are vanishing from face of the earth day by day. No one there to protect us, Not even the UN and EU. It's a crime against humanity.

Tough situation but they are tough people. They have these ship breaking operations that are the primary source of steel for the country. The steel gets turned into rebar and i beams for the construction of buildings on the solid ground that they do have. The people work in factories making low cost goods. You do what you have to.

These rivers change their path every year. It’s not a weather change issue. It is sad but nothing to do with this.
India shouldn't build the coal field on already fragile eco system. If Bangladesh suffer from erosion then India too will not be spared. It will affect everyone through chain reaction. I can't believe India instead of helping to preserve the forest she is becoming the cause for it. Very bad. Very sad.

This is angled in a very pro- climate change way. The truth is that the Himalayas are not melting faster because of global warming, but due to too many people cooking over fires that causes dust and other particles to rise up and cover the snow on the mountains causing them to warm up and melt.
It is undeniable that Bangladesh is a very flat and is just above the sea level. There is another country with the same situation, Holland. They built structures and barriers to prevent this problem from escalating. It is simply for Bangladesh to start to invest in protection...
Problem is Netherlands is one of the richest countries in the world with a relatively small coastline compared to one of the poorest countries in the world with the most exposed shoreline such as having the longest beach in the world and largest mangroves in the world.
If the world's nations were simplified as a track race, Bangladesh would have to start the race behind everyone else whilst having one of the largest geography problems in the world such as the high density of monsoons and floods from north and south; and high arsenic percentage in their water tables.

India has to build enough dams asap to protect floods and use that water somewhere else possible and share the proper portion of water with Bangaladesh needed during their dry season. Because of some bad situation, India became 3 countries, India has to think as they are also part of us. the migration to cities, the abandonment of villages and slums etc are all issues that every "developing"asian country faces. Its the same here i india. Those slum shacks can sell for a pretty penny, my maid told me her's is worth $80,000 USD (not rupees, USD!!) but the apartments in my area are worth 4 million USD plus so its all relative.

The sheer ignorance in the comments section about Bangladeshs population is disgusting. People just love to see everything through their prespective and judge others. These people are poor and uneducated. They know little to nothing about family planning and birth control. What might seem obvious to us is not very obvious to them. The fertility rate has dropped from almost 7/per women to 2/per women in the span of less than 50 years so maybe we give it a few more years ?.
This area historically had high population due to trade and fertile land its nothing new also the introduction of vaccination helped with the population boom in the modern era.

Not in a historic flood plain. It's the same all over, limited insight re. the past 10,000 thousand yrs has led to this all over the developed world- living in a floodplain has always been a temporary solution.
