Met Lou Rawls at a Budweiser Military Concert at Ft Benning GA.he was courteous and very engaging and never acted like he was anything special...humble and it was a pleasure meeting him.
Sam Cooke Was Indeed A Master Of His Art!!! He Understood The Positive And Negative Attributes Of Humanity, And Explained That Part Of Serendipity In His Songs. A Great Musical Icon, And Humanitarian, And A Great Man!!!****
SAME HERE) i am just geting hip but they have. THE RIGHT WAY TO FEEL THAT WAYY AND I BEEN SINGING IT TOO AMEN ) RIP SAM COOKE I HOPE i see you in heaven in one day
This is one of the most heartfelt interviews I have ever seen on the music scene of the 50s and 60s. Lou Rawls really sets the stage and names the players here. Sam discovered and nurtured a lot of great talent. Thank God for that. Lou was one of those talents and he clearly saw Sam Cooke for the genius and massive talent that he was. Sam's work and death is still felt in the music industry. I wish I knew all the tracks that Lou appeared on with Sam other than "Bring It on Home to Me." They were brothers in more ways than one and that made their work together deep.
One of the most revealing interviews of a legend from a co artist and sincere friend. One who was there and relays a factual story in equable tone. Pivotal moments from emotionally charged perspectives like this are rare and should be cherished. So many interesting insights of one savvy enough not to let the record industry rob him. Cooke's unmistakable smooth creamy voice and his writing ability stand the test of time. Great snippet into an overlooked icon of 50s/60s music
+Eugene Jamison If I could go back in time just once it would probably be to see Sam's live performance at the Harlem Square Club. His music and charm is beyond compare. I would love to have met him.
Mr. Jamison, your uncle really gave alot of himself to his music and the people he came in contact with, his music will always be forever young and memorable, I wanted to say thank Mr. Sam Cooke for writing so many lovable and meaningful song's. Respectfully Carla R.
Yes he was, Eugene. The best and incredibly influential, despite the efforts made to silence him. His name will live on in music centuries from now. You are fortunate to have known him. I'm sure you have many stories. God bless you and your family.
i cannot get over this interview Lou Rwals a true friends and great singer wonderful brought tears to my eyes - i know what it is like to lose a childhood friend - Lou was so genuine in this - bring it on home xxx everyone should see this it really makes you think
Lou, I'm glad you and Sam were good friends. I loved your deep voice and I watched you when you song so lovely on "The Big Valley.". I'm sorry you lost so a wonderful and talented friend (Sam Cooke). I miss and loved Sam.
Love it! Thank You Mr Rawls. Gentleman, "Take Head..Take Head!" Was honored to meet Mr Leroy Crume, from the Soul Stirrers! That's where it's at! Much Love! It all started w/ Gospel! I heard Secular first....Then took me to Gospel! Understand and love it all! One of the Highlights of my life_ Met true friends & family of Sam Cooke. Took a trip with them to Clarksdale! Would love to that again...Saw the CROSSROADs! Months Later, On Stage w. Chuck Berry. WOW! LOVE YOU COOKIES and you now who you are! Not sure if our WONDERFULL online exists anyone, still Hoping! Love to my COOKIES!
Lew and I met in Anchorage Alaska Lew was working at the mermaid room on forth st I was working across the street at the Trophy room Lew would come over after work and we would close the door and maybe 7 or 8 of us would sit down and role up some joints and get so high. That would go on for a month or so every nite . We would leave around five or so and Lew and l would cruse around Anchorage in my 64 Buick Riviera with the first tape for cars. I remember I had Herbie Mann at the Village Gate on tape . So we had a lot of good times together. But soon he was going back to the Windy City and l to San Francisco . He would call me when he came to town and we would connect and hang out. Around 1976 or so he called me , he was opening at the Fairmount Hotel in San Francisco. I went and met him at his room and then seeing his show was great. I had know idea he was now as popular as he was . When later when I heard of his death I cried like a baby. So long old buddy . Love Jerry
It almost certainly was a hit. His success as a black artist was just too threatening to the white establishment. They feared where that might lead. Well, they found out in another way when Barry Gordy brought Motown to the world. Sam was way ahead of his time. Still is.
Such a "rich history"... How we gonna do this, people? Fine clip, 5:45-6:10 (gospel truth) Hell.. The whole interview was amazing Lou Rawls we love you too! My Sincerest Thanks for the upload! ;-)
Lou Rawls is speaking of the jack Cooper show on Sunday mornings. Cooper was married to one of Bishop Roberts daughters. Bro I. Roberts also had a radio show later on in the late 50’s.
This is great! I always like to hear from those who know. Thanks for the upload. That observation about babies and dogs is true, very true. We have all wondered on some occasions what would have happened if we were present. Could we have made a difference?
What he said about church being the best training for singers is 100 percent accurate. I learned way more that way. When you are just learning the techniques, you can keep your volume lower. Once you are able to let go, you can open up and blend right in with the others.
Yes Indeed he was a cool dude. The coolest dude of all time. The one and only SAM THE MAN COOKE. THE GREATEST SINGER EVER AND FOR All TIME. OH HOW DEEPLY YOU TOUCHED OUR SOUL!!!!!!!!!!!!!
For those intrieguied by this tone of personal insight there is a great 8 disc DVD set entitled "Rock and Roll Graffiti -50's$ 60's." It's from 2007, with a format of about 30 musicians and producers. The artists recall highly detailed accounts of moments from their career. Plenty of inner acting and bouncing off one another's comments and recollections. They also perform their mega hits, and many infamous one hit wonders. Sugar Shack,Dizzy, Sea Cruise Searchin, THen You Call Tell Me Goodbye,,,,on and on. There is a live studio house band, complete with a set of "shoopshoop"girls. If you really like this video YOU NEED to get a copy of Rock n Roll Graffiti. 8 set DVD.
Un Maestro hablando de otro. Ahí, creo yo, está el secreto del éxito de Lou Rawls, que quería seguir el estilo de Sam Cooke quien fue para Rawls un referente para hacerse un espacio en el mundo de la música. Dos Maestros...
Alexis Poulos The love in America. America is a racist culture. Many of you are satified with that because it does not affect you. BTW so called jews ARE white.
Alexis. What is it about a person expressing the way they process information that incites instant hostility in another stranger. I wasn't being mean, disparaging , wasn't being evil, or ugly. Why must you feel compelled to call me a moron. A man who's highly intelligent, insightful, and emotionally intelligent. Take a chill pill and get off the internet if people can bother u that easily
One key point Lou mentioned at the end is Sam was going to give a show at PJ's and meet with his two managers. Etta James was at PJ's and she recalled when Sam told her he was going to fire his two managers and go independent. His two managers were in the Irish mafia. Shortly after everybody left PJ's it was announced that Sam was killed. There is a documentary of how and why Sam was really murdered. Etta James knew it was a set up.
I was 3 years old when Sam Cooke was murder I was told when a person shot you are beat you that's murder My aunt was drunk when she told me. that, she was so heart broken she all most drunk her self to death.
I believe, if Sam Cooke didn't get killed so easily ( only 6 years into his singing career ), he would have been a lot bigger and more famous than Michael jackson - though I'm Michael's biggest fan.
