Oxide Primer And Chipped Zimmerit! Jagdpanther 314 (Meng 1/35)

- My friends, it's time for some chipping action! And this time we'll do something special... because Zimmerit was applied in factories, and it was always spread over a coat of oxide primer, which had this bright brick-red color. So, naturally, when the Zimmerit got damaged, it exposed the red primer underneath, giving us some interesting modeling possibilities!

Removing seam lines is one of the most boring, yet most important fundamental techniques! You're making me proud! :D
I bet the sponge chipping feels great after the 70+ hours of brush chipping the Fehrmann Tiger :)
The whole Tiger chipping endeavor was a really tough misadventure, now it's become "just another day at the office" kind of deal :D

Well I'm very impressed with your techniques I am 61 years old and I've been building models since I was 10 I've always used enamels and oil paints for weathering and washes love you videos keep up the good work you're becoming in my opinion a master modeler

I built the Ming Panther A Early recently and found a color pic from Wiking Div. in 1944 on Flickr. While not perfect, the color was still there! Your Zimmerit chipping is spot on, except the Zimmerit is Dark Yellow! Almost the same as Dunkle Gelb but slightly more orange, Slightly, tiny bit... I too expected a Lt. Gray but Ochre Pigment and saw dust will do that!
Theres something about the red primer with the pale adhesives around the edges of the damaged zimmerit that makes it feel more like a wounded beast. Really cool effect
I finished its king tiger and it looks great, to the point that my modelling dad of 30 years said I did better then he ever could, I’ve been doing this for 2 years
The US currently uses what's called Chemical Agent Resistant Coating (CARC) which was painted over the old paint jobs. The CARC coat is textured, the non-CARC paint wasn't textured. They started painting everything a few decades ago so a lot of the older vehicles have started chipping and you can see the old, dull paint. This series have given me inspiration to attempt a similar project with a more modern US vehicle.

Very nice and realistic zimmerit. I used to have a piece of real zimmerit my dad brought back (among other things). But, sadly it has been lost to the sands of time.
The colour contrast between the chipped Zimmerit and steel is so evident, and I love it. The thing looks super gnarly!

I absolutely love your videos and I’m not even an armour modeller, I mostly do aircraft but I’ve learned so many great techniques from watching you. I'm at the paint stage of a Panzer III M and a Panzer IV H and I think I'll be using this series as my painting guide. When I first started in this hobby you'd only need three colours for a Panzer, dunkelgelb for the tank, black for the tracks and silver for the MG! Well done (again!) Martin and I'm looking forward to the next episode!

Guys, the red oxide paint is the RAL 8012 reference that the Germans used as an anti-rust paint. For the vallejo colors, it is the reference 70.814 Burnt Cadmium Red and for the prince august, it is the reference Rouge cad. Brulé 814

Always learn something usable. I might rarely use the techniques as I normally paint "battle ready" table top models, but every once in a while one of my gamers askes for some bling on a particular vehicle/ individual as they basically defied the dice.
I really like red primer on the bent fender. It looks fantastic!

Edit: Hey Uncle, is there any chance you could talk a bit more about your airbrush setup? I know you are using a Harder & Steinbeck Evolution, but what about your compressor? I'm researching what to buy myself and what else to look out for.
Instead of a compressor, consider using a compressed gas cylinder (eg CO2) with a pressure reducing valve. It's absolutely quiet and the flow from the gun doesn't pulsate at all. Personally, I have been using a 7kg bottle for this purpose for a long time, because I live in an apartment and I usually get to spray by night, when everyone is sleeping 😉. So absolute satisfaction for me and I can highly recommend. The only disadvantage is that the rest of the filling is not easily estimated, it is only according to the weight of the bottle. Otherwise it has no mistake ...

Thanks for the reply, I have seen others use this method but isn't refilling the canister quite expensive? Having quickly looked at the prices it seems almost the same price as a compressor and this doesn't need refilling.
Bottles are usually used in beverage machines and a 7kg filling in the Czech Republic costs about 12 - 15 €. This amount lasts for many hours of operation at normal airbrush pressure, which is IMO quite reasonable. There are even smaller bottles available...

Of course, many things could happen during our lives and the decision is always up to each individual who must consider the acceptable amount of risk.
In any case, AFAIK identical CO2 cylinders are commonly placed, for example, in restaurants under postmix beverage vending machines, which mix soft drinks of well-known brands from concentrate. The CO2 fire extinguisher is the same, except that it emits liquid CO2 from the bottom due to the different type of valve.
E.g. air cylinders for divers have the contents of the cylinder also compressed into a liquid state ...
Each such cylinder must be inspected regularly and passed a pressure test.
On the contrary, the aibrush compressor should ideally also have a tank so that the outlet pressure does not pulsate. Of course, there is significantly less pressure inside the tank, but neither revision nor pressure testing is usually done there. Due to the condensation of air humidity, the air tank corrodes from the inside over time, the wall thins and IMO it is also not completely without risk.
So, it is always up to everyone to consider the pros and cons and choose what suits them best.

When using a sponge for chipping I’d recommend that you try twisting the sponge around so you don’t make the same pattern of chips all over the model.

Watching Night shift while working on night shift
This may sound stupid but I am super excited to try some of your techniques on my Warhammer 40K models someday to give them something they lack and make them more unique.
On one of your models you should make it have been a tank that was knocked out but engineers fixed it so there are remains of the blast or blasts that knocked the tank out

I'm not too experienced in the topic, I'm more of a hobbyist when it comes to printing and 3D modeling. Plenty of 3D printing focused channels out there with heaps more knowledge!

Could you possible release a list of paints you use for different camos. Would be really helpful.
no it wouldn't. use your own head, make your own experiences and find what works for YOU. that's what the hobby is about.
I was never good at making lists, but if you're looking for something specific, you can always refer to a video where I'm painting this or that type of camouflage. I can highly advise experimenting on your own, too, that's the best way to develop your own style and get a better understanding of all the different paints! :)
