    As a single handicapper, I am very happy with the Vice Pro Zero. I don't really need Pro Plus (Yeah they are nice, but do I really feel substantial difference? No), and as you said, in late autumn or winter I'd rather play the Vice Tour (remembering the old days with the great Noodle).

    So happy to see that video! To see a pro say all you just said! I'm not super good nor super bad as a golfer, shooting anywhere between low 70s and mid 80s, and I'm using more and more often super-cheap balls (currently the Inesis distance 100). Once you've learned that they won't check as much on certain shots, you can play about 99% of the shots the course asks you to. And the 1% remaining (so 1 every 2 or 3 rounds) you take your medicine, accept that you won't be able to cosy it close to the flag and hope for a good putt after. I haven't noticed any scoring difference (average and standard deviation) from when I was using "tour level balls" (Srixon Z-star XV and Inesis Tour 900) and I haven't noticed a significant amount of change in my distances. The only real difference I've seen? Well, 9 euros vs 58 euros for 12 balls... And I end up loosing less balls since I'm less stressed about loosing them! I also often play with "tour special" balls and others that I find on the course. Provided they're not "ruined", I don't see much differences, only in "feel" and in spin around the greens (but if you know a ball is urethane covered, you anticipate more check than if you know it's surlyn/ionomere... ).
    That people who don't play often and experiment are led to believe all the nonsense you've mentioned is quite infuriating. Just like the people who've been told (and believe) that 1° "never up never in" 2° "drive fr show, putt for dough" or 3° "keep your head down"

    I'm a very average 14Hcp but played Srixon Z-Star. One day the ball looked perfect, but was performing poorly: running through greens not the expected flight or distance. I was about to just bin the €5 ball when I noticed that the alignment line was covering the model mark and was actually a "AD-333" ball. I accidentally conducted a blind test where the ionomer cover played like a faulty urethane ball for me.
    Totally agree with experimenting and swapping softer for very cold conditions.

    Excellent video. I am in England, it is very wet and my swing needs work. As a result I am playing old PRO v1's, Callaways, a Vice Pro and some Srixons. In these muddy conditions it makes no frigging difference at all. I hit 8 greens in regulation on Monday, and in each case the ball hit the green and stayed there, leaving a crater for me to repair. Took me longer to repair the crater than to putt out. I then found that the Taylormade I was using was a TP5X, way too hard apparently for my medium swing speed. In the summer it may well be different, and I will start using those nice Snell balls I got for Xmas. Until then, carry on regardless.

    Great video Simon. I think there's also a benefit to playing with cheaper balls. I find that if I lose an expensive one I get overly frustrated and it can affect the rest of my round. Found a few Slazenger V300 and thought typical when mates are finding proV1’s. Decided to play them and they go just as well as others. I have nearly 4 dozen new balls waiting to be used in the summer months because as others have said too easily to lose balls in winter being plugged, under leaves or lost in the low sunlight

    Played a round about a month ago with a Srixon Z Star XV Golf Ball and thought it was a great ball. Played my last round of golf with a Callaway Supersoft ball and thought it was a great ball! The only difference between the two balls was that the Supersoft cut up badly compared to the Z Star. Yes, l get that every golf ball is different, and l,ve pretty much played them all, but if you're shooting 85 or 95, then l honestly don't think there's much difference. You can play a soft or a hard ball, depending on the conditions, so just play what you like.

    Shout out for showing some love to the vice Drive--my favorite ball. Over 200 rounds under 80 and more than 30 at par or better last year, so there's no rule that says you can't shoot low scores with non urethane balls. Watching hackers consistently shell out fifty bucks a dozen for tour model balls? Hysterical.

    • @scottdean27
      @scottdean27 4 місяці тому +1

      You are so correct. Myself, and some other guys I know at my courses shoot a lot of rounds under 80 with ionomer covered balls. I don’t think I would shoot lower with a urethane ball unless the greens are really quite hard and they haven’t been watered or been rained on for a while. My local courses never get the greens that hard because they maintain the greens.

    I have played golf for 60 years, we always had a winter ball of choice, invariably it was a distance ball as no run out, greens receive a rock with delight, an putting is a lottery. Vice have a great range of balls as do some other direct to consumer brands. The so called premium balls, get lost just as easy and cheap balls, so either back your ability or find a summer ball you like the feel of and that is affordable. I sell my pick ups on eBay and get good money, that’s unless they are only suitable for my practice bag. So the balls i use are subsidised by found balls. End of rant

    A surlyn ball can have the same spin as a urethane ball and have similar ball flight, but they don't bite and stop the same way when they land. If you chip and run a lot, back spin doesn't matter as much as if you lob them in. I played the Pro Zero during 2022, it is on the harder side but I liked it anyway.

I used the Inesis Soft 500 in the beginning of the season and the end of the season when it was wet and 10 degrees C outside. I played 58 after hcp in one of my first rounds last year. Pouring rain, high gusting wind and I think the thermometer showed +5 degrees C! It was a booked trip with 2 hotel nights. Don't see any difference from these to new. I think compression is very understated with golf balls as a lot of golfers playing premium balls & wasting their money as they don't have enough swing speed to properly compress the ball & get the maximum performance out of it.
