People love to hate on my Cleveland SS.
"You wouldn't have won that hole without that Chipper..."
Well no shit... but I did. Golf is a zero sum game. Did I have the least strokes to get in the hole? Then I win, regardless if you like my club or not...
Got smart sole chipper end of August handicap was 8.7. 4 months of using it handicap now 3.4. So easy to use no more duff chips. Up and down percentage when I use it is around 75/80 percent which has helped massively get my handicap down. Golfs hard no shame in using a chipper.
I used a Cleveland Smart Sole Chipper when I was trying to break 100 and it works like magic for my game! I broke 100 and is breaking 90 now 50% of my rounds because I am getting the ball closer from around the green with my chipper. Folks should try them before they dismiss this club.
The 42 degree Smart Sole is a great option and much more versatile than the standard chipper. I find it a great option for pitches up to 40-50 yards where I can run the ball onto the green.
I started using that, but now prefer using all clubs from my 58 to my 8 iron depending on the distance.
Learning to chip is also a good option
@jackjfjfjf instead of learning to chip, just learn how to hit your driver straight and also how to hit greens with long irons. Then you don't have to worry about chipping 🙄
I personally don't care what club people what to use. Even "illegal drivers". It is just dumb to me. Have fun and golf.
Love my Cleveland Smart sole. It is such a versatile club for anything 75 yards and in, it probably saves me four or five shots a round.
I have the Cleveland Smart Sole chipper. 43 degrees. It replaced my gap wedge because I can hit it up to 100 yards. No other chipper that I've seen would allow you to hit full shots with it. Best club in my bag.
I deadly from a 100 out with my chipper.
I bought the Pinemeadow chipper when it was on sale during Prime days this summer. It looks more like the Cleveland one so you can play it farther out. But after hitting it I felt it difficult to control the speed as it was hot off the face when hitting in the center.
Is this the same for all chippers or just this one?
Thanks for watching guys! Let me know which camp you sit on!
Have used the Smart Sole Chipper for few months now and love it, I can chip with any other iron no problem but I just really like this club, 60/70 yards out and works well with around the green feeling very comfortable too. If you don’t have to put the ball in the air then it’s fine to use a chipper.
One thing as a bad golfer that I found a clipper excellent for is hitting out from under trees and bad lies (no grass). Hitting a low runner with a iron I find 50/50 at best. Or hitting on hard dirt where a fat shot can go anywhere. With a clipper I can hit a good low runner a fair distances without much trouble. I'm starting to prefer it for that more then actually clipping with it.
Does the no place in golf extend to anything that’s either not a blade or a driver made of timber ?!?
Haha by the looks of his other comments. Yes 😅
Followed by no golfers with families that take away from practice or the money to join a country club…. I really don’t see why we shouldn’t be making golf as accessible as possible.
*I have a Cleveland chipper and IT WORKS GREAT! Can use it from up to 60(?) yards our.*
I used the old Ping Chipo for quite awhile and have very recently purchased the new Ping ChipR. The lofts are very different and I find the new model to be much more forgiving and a better weight :)
chippers are ideal for little bump and runs or those super short chips outside the green, been using one myself and was the first club i got outside the half set beginners set to start. have slowly been working on chipping with a 50 degree too for the longer chips just to make sure i can hit both clubs and shots well.
Use a Cleveland smart sole now and again and agree it’s class for mid to high handicap players but I’ve recently converted someone that’s off 4 to use one .
Yeah you can use a 7 iron but as you’ve pointed out we all aren’t Tiger Woods .
Anything that gets you in or closer to the hole and saves you shots must be seriously considered going into your bag ⛳️👍🏻🙌🏻
I don't have a problem with anyone using a chipper. I just don't have room for one because I've spent hundreds of hours practicing just about every chipping technique with every club in the bag.
I have one around the house somewhere. Used it when I was getting back into golf. Worked well but applications were limited. Most greens around here are elevated and surrounded by bunkers. Chippers seem to work best when you are not short sided and have plenty of green for runout.
Agreed, if playing a course where green are protected I could see this not being of good use.
A caddy, I watch a lot of people play golf. I put a chipper in the bag this year and I don't use it much but it's very very easy to use and, if it's about consistency it can help everyone. Mostly the problem for people is ego
I have several chippers that I put in the bag from time to time. They never stay long enough for me to get good with them. All of mine are used versions with different shapes, grips and weight. One day I might find magic in the bottle but for now I'll stick to standard clubs to use around the green.
I have a Cleveland Niblick 9 and its amazing when conditions are right. On a links course or in the middle of summer I use it from anything up to 100yrds out, its my bump an run club. They aren't as effective when the grass is lush or in winter. In general my chipping with all clubs has got a lot better from using it, but it still goes in the bag when I know I'll need to play a lot of bump and runs
I have the Cleveland smart sole chipper and love it. I was able to take out my PW because the chipper does the same on full shots.
I have the same experience, it is my PW now. No problems from 130 and in.
used to have a putter that slopped at the back that made a pretty decent left handed chipper. I keep thinking about putting a lefty chipper in the bag as it could be useful when you need to hack out from a lie that you can't play 'normal'
I have been planning on trying one for a while now. Thanks for the info!
That was a stunning review. I love these keep them up., Ade.
My mum used to own a chipper, she swore by it. She got her handicap down to 26, on super slick greens in Spain. I still have it somewhere, but I never use it.
I mainly use my nine iron for bump n runs. Works great.
I have a cleveland chipper and i love it! saves me when, as I often do, miss the green
My brother bought the Cleveland Chipper three weeks ago and we’ve been trying it out. I have to say it’s fabulous! We did demo the Ping Chipper, but with it’s longer shaft and flatter lie angle, we didn’t see much advantage over just using a chip n run 7 iron, plus it’s too expensive. The Cleveland was in an Amazon sale for 79 quid.
Regards,
Dazza. 🇬🇧
Most high handicappers dont have the skillset and/or swingspeed required for a standard 14 club set. Super easy and smart to toss a good chipper in the bag, not just because it works, but it eliminates a ton of frustration.
if i use one , i have a Benross chipper . Its live a blade club as opposed to the putter type but heavier than a club . I use it more in winter when its easier to duff your shot . Its a good rescue club too .
The Mazel chipper/wedges available from Amazon are pretty good value compared to some of the examples you mentioned. It’s £60 and comes in about 4 different loft options (35, 45, 55 and 60 degrees)
I have the 55 degree option so it’s good when a bit more height is needed.
You can also put a slightly bigger swing on it which again adds versatility.
I have a love/hate relationship with it and haven’t used it in a while as my short game isn’t that bad, but if I were to put it in the bag and use it regularly I’d love it. Because it takes some getting used to and I only use it occasionally I tend to struggle with it.
I have developed a few strategies that make it fairly redundant:
I always putt if I can, my worst putt is usually as good as my best chip.
If I can’t putt I go to my 26 degree hybrid and chip with that.
In the sand, the sand wedge is pretty much the only option but I’m pretty good in bunkers.
I only use my wedge for short shots as a last resort, when you need to pop it up and stop quick. These are the only short shots I practice.
Borrowed my mates Cleveland Niblick when visiting him in Germany about fifteen years ago and it actually worked really well. Thought long and hard about buying one but I just couldn't afford it at the time. However, depending on the course, I do occasionally use a slightly shortened Cleveland HB3 seven iron for the same job. Handy for deep fairway bunkers too.
Shout out for the Mazel Square Strike. They’re about £45 on Amazon. I have both this and the Cleveland Smartsole, and prefer the Mazel
Just got the Mazel. Still, trying to get consistent with it but it seems like it will be effective.
The chipper is great club in the right place - just off the green where you want to hit a low shot in with the control of putter. Yes you can chip and run with a wedge to achieve the same result - its just I tend to get better overall results with a chipper, which is why I use it and keep it in the bag. I use a second hand odyssey X-Act which has a quite a bit more weight than the cheap fazer one I had previously, which I find gives a little more control overall. They are however of very limited use on elevated greens. Notwithstanding this it is one of the 2 most likely clubs to come out of the bag if I need to put another club in.
I've got a chipper i bought from sports direct around 15 years ago. It works well but takes getting used to due to the thin grip. Cost me a tenner
There's no pictures on a scorecard, what does it matter what club you use? its the score that counts
Yes I will be using one to see if it can help me around the green
Simon, how would you compare these Chippers to the Square Strike, which can be found used much easier? Cheers!
Hi, I’ve actually got both. I was using the ‘square strike’ until my son pinched it. I then bought a Cleveland Smartsole as a supposed upgrade, but tbh, I prefer the Square Strike. I’ve since had a chipping lesson and have removed the chipper as it’s not great with dealing with difficult lies.
I tried both the Square Strike and the Cleveland chipper and prefer the Cleveland. They both work well up close but I really preferred the clev for full shots so it's more useful. But you can get the square strike is a couple lofts and the cleveland is only in 42 degree.
I have a square strike style chipper. Paid less than $40 for it. Mine is 45 degree. Works well. ⛳️
Simon, I love my Ping Chip-r. The price was a little overwhelming. But after I started using it. It is a fantastic club!
I've been playing for 45 years and I have one in my bag. I freaking love it. Paid $40 at Edwin Watts. I actually call it my Cheater Club. Chip and run has always been a tough shot for me......until I bought one of these. Go to your golf shop and try one. My first attempt in the shop I drained it from about 20 feet.
Metal "woods", huge headed drivers, cavity back irons, mallet putters, hybrids. All of these were at one time new and decried as cheating. I'll bet we all have two or more (or all five) in our bags. Of course chippers are fine.
Just used a chipper last week. Love it. Almost impossible to screw the shot up.
Had a Hippo chipper when I first started. Don't know where it went, but never really got used to it.
When I started out many years ago I bought a chipper for the bag. Did use it a bit, but soon found that my short game and chipping was very good with a variety of clubs, which perhaps made up for other deficiencies in my game right at the top end of the bag. Therefore the usefulness in my bag of a chipper was minimal.
There is I suppose an argument, that having that chipper in my bag right at the start, did indeed help my technique.
Ping Chipper - fantastic!!! Favorite club in bag. Excellent rescue club too. Worth every penny.
I bought a cheap Ben Sayers putter which gave me increased motivation to use my wedges. Just chunk down your wedge and use a putting stroke like Simon says.
I use a Cleveland Launcher HB 9 iron. Great chipper. Good 9 iron from almost any lie. Super out of 80 - 100 yard cross bunkers. Used price is cheap. Blends with my Mizuno irons. Saves me probably 4 shots per round.
I just bought the Ping ChipR. Have not got to use it yet, were in mid winter. But I have used them in the past, and they do work for the average golfer for sure.
Got a SkyMax chipper by ice x-1 what ever that means, I carry sometimes so its out the bag has its very heavy ive put a putter grip on it didnt know that was against the rules ?
I was at the range today and tested many chippers. I would and probably will game the Ping ChipR once it's on sale or if I find it cheap. Until then, I might put my Cleveland in there.
I'm a Cleveland Smart sole 4 chipper convert, mine even has a graphite shaft, It can be used from up to 80yds out and spins the ball like a silly thing on 50yd ¾ shots. Real drop & stop stuff.
I love my Cleveland chipper. It's my go to club when I am in trouble or have a really soft lie to deal with.😊
I bought my first chipper because my argos package set didn't have one.....I was brand new to the game and unaware of any stigma... simply saw one in a sports shop and thought my set doesn't have one, I must need one...20 years later I still have one in my bag
Ok we're just going to ignore that scoop into the hole at the start, outrageous
More accurate with that than my putting to be fair 😅
Ima 9 hcp and I only carried 13 clubs so I grabbed the Cleveland chipper with the smart sole. It’s a fun club out of tricky spots with overhanging trees and for bump and runs around the greens. I wouldnt have ditched a wedge for it, but I didn’t have to. It’s a fun club.
i use a mitsushiba chipper its at least 30 years old ! its stainles steel about 350 grams and ive fitted it with a mid size tour fit grip works every time! cost around £10 never getting replaced lol
I used one when I first started playing and it helped me to enjoy playing and get lower scores(108). Now at 9 handicap nothing beats a sand wedge
Honestly considered getting a chipper (ok, looking @ the Ping) over the last year or so. I hated them for years, but was better with my PW when I was younger and playing more. My grandfather and cousin were deadly with theirs from 100 yards and in back then. I have nothing against them and will still keep it under consideration as I move forward
Take a look at the Cleveland options, old (Niblick)and new (Smart sole). Unless it has to be a Ping?
@@johnp8131 def doesn't have to be a Ping. I just like the look of it. I'll take a look at the others though too. Thanks!
Been gaming a pinemeadow chipper (39.99 brand new) for two seasons and love it.
I've been using a Bronty Chipmaster for a long time, my uncle gave it to me 40 odd years ago. Splendid little tool.
They should make a sw loft chipper, would be great for sand bunkers. The standard 7 iron loft chipper gets out of shallow sand bunkers very easily and close to the flag.
the problem most people have with this is most golf courses are geared towards practicing the long game and putting. Which is another reason amateur short games are not so good. I wouldn’t mind betting that a club’s membership average handicap would drop if a club replaced its driving range with a dedicated short game practice area with rough, bunkers and greens, but that will never happen as it’s a higher maintenance overhead and harder to make a margin from it. Given a choice of both, most people would choose to hit irons and woods on a range.
I have a no name chipper I found at goodwill basically new for $3.49
I did not know you are not allowed a putter grip; can someone help with the logic. I understand double sided makes it two clubs. Longer I guess means you can brace it... but putter grip?
I have absolutely no idea how people get so worked up about this sort of thing. I don't want one myself, but if it helps someone, probably at the higher end of the handicap spectrum, then let them use it. My dad had one in his bag and he used it quite a bit.
How are the Yuma chippers? The Dune and Mule chippers?
I've been using a Ben Sayers XF Pro chipper for several years, excellent tool, lost count of how many times I've holed out with it, probably use it half a dozen times a round.
I bought a Ping ChipR and it's done wonders for my short game. It's a great training aid because after some time with it, I was able translate the swing to my wedges and it worked a treat. Never understand why people are so snobby when it comes to chippers.
P.S. It's amazing if you struggle with GIR like me.
I have the Ben Sayers one for £25. Second time I bought it after breaking a previous one with a 90 yard shot. (It did land right near the flag though in fairness.) Have had a couple of the Sports direct ones too. They break far too easily though. You can see why with theirs. The welded conection point looks weak as feck. Still I find both to be great value. I love the Ben Sayers one.
My Ben Sayers just arrived today. Looking forward to getting out and giving it a try
How has it lasted for you? I keep seeing that they break easily but then the people are saying they are trying to hit 80-100 yard shots with them (not what they are intended for)
I'd only be using it around the greens and hoping it doesn't break within the first few uses
@@SL0409My second one is still going strong after 6 months. Got hyprid irons now too so don't need it for 50 yard plus shots anymore.
Can't be without my cheap Ben Sayers chipper. Have tried lessons, wedges, 7 iron for chipping, but I keep having to put the chipper back in the bag. It just gives me instant confidence around the green
How has it lasted for you?
I got my Ben Sayers chipper today and excited to get out and use it but I keep seeing people say it breaks easy and they don't last long
@@SL0409 I found it to be very robust, no problem on that front. I've it had for a good while now. Only took it out of the bag because I've a mizuno 7 hybrid that does the chipper's job as well as being a hybrid. Enjoy that club, it's a legend
I have the slazenger £14:99 chipper. Jumbo grip and put my own lead sticker weights on. Up and down 85% success. Single figures now. 😊.
Bought a Cleveland one last year for £100. When short game is in a bad place I take it out for a few rounds until I’m confident with my wedges again.
My pitching wedge works perfectly as a chipper, and its a full club. The problem with chippers for me is they are only good for chip shots
Have a slazenger chipper, honestly it's a god send. Putter Stroke with new messing
Lead tape on the Slazenger?
PROUD OWNER of ping chipper only play 11 clubs in my current bag setup so making room wasnt a problem . current setup driver, 3,7,9 woods than 7,8,9,p,s,chipper, putter
Got a Ping ChipR when it came out took out the lob wedge & have gone from 22 to 17 this summer
i have had a chipper in my bag since the 1980s. great club great results
Been using a Beckley Ralston chipper for over 40 years....was my Fathers....I was very close to the pin on long chips!
I enjoy short game probably strongest area of my golf so not for me. Brought a 2nd hand one for my mum and she loves it especially the forgiveness around the green.
* left hand has entered the chat
I have the Ping Chipper and it is a very good club to have. Once you start getting used to it you find yourself using it more and more. It is really good here in Floriduh where we play a lot of Bermuda. I have dropped several strokes, on average, from my score at most courses I play here.
I use a Ping G20 31 deg hybrid 👍
Chipping is the difference between par/birdy and bogey when your approach shots are off. My gap wedge is deadly accurate for chipping so will stick with it.
I used one when I first started playing 25 years ago. Now I wonder why I didn't keep it. Back then I averaged less than 2 putts per hole because I hit it so close. Now I am closer to 3.
I did buy the ping to be honest when it came out, ive gone back to my 9iron long chips, and 54 shorter stuff, according to shot scope chipping is a strong suit, i cant really explain why i purchased the ping chipr, my chipping actually got worse
Got cleveland smart sole chipper amazing club can play from 110yards out or any distance inside that great feel off this best club ive owned play off 13
Chipping - whatever works! Those idiotic (in my eyes) giant square putters look like off Star Wars everyone is using. Not traditional golf to me. Soooo, chippers are totally okay and real golf! But here is an idea, (I should work for Calloway or Ping etc.). IDEA: Given you can use a chipper with basically a putting stroke. Someone should marry up and make a companion set where the Chipper matches their Putter! Same length, grip, lie, etc. So a chipper with say a 37 degree loft. Why not TWO chippers, the 7 iron type loft for 20-40 ft away. Then another one exactly like your putter but with say 10 degrees of loft for chips under 20 ft.? What do you think Ping? Since Ping pioneered putters in the 60's with the "Anser" why not try this (and send me free set of clubs with fitting for MY idea here). Ron K March 27, 2024
I would consider myself a strong chipper and I would have no problem using one, but given that its pretty one dimensional, i would not thinknits worth taking up the space in my bag.
If i was struggling with chipping, I would look more at one of those cobra onelength hybrids. Could use it out of the rough, and you could potentially replace a 5 or a 6 iron out of your bag with it
The chipper would be a great performing tool for Rick Shiels ... he is struggling with it somewhat. 🤘🏻😎🤘🏻
It’s a rest interesting point. Personally I have started using my hybrid for these kinds of shots and it’s been working quite well but I can defo see. (I am a high hcp) where these could come in useful
Good piece
I bought my odyssey with a thicker grip for 120 from hot golf brand new great club for when it's needed. Its not going over a bunker but has a place in my bag
“How am I supposed to chip with that going on behind me Doug?!”
-Shooter McGavin
3 handicap and I use one and a wide sole 56* wedge too-easier not harder--
2:13 I must've seen this shot hundreds of times, but I've never seen that angle of it.
I use just 4 clubs, and the chipper is what my whole game is built around. I use a driver, use my chipper from there on until I get on the green, unless I end up in a sand trap, which doesn't happen often. Never loose a ball and can hit my Wilson harmonized chipper between 80 and 125 yards. The game is easy, while not impressive, but also not maddening.
I use a chipper from time to time, but I would prefer to use my wedges
My lob wedge does it just fine. Just need technique lol
and it gets me out of the sand, I can hit high flops, and it is precise to 80 yards on full swings. Can't do all that with a chipper.
It’s a game. Play it how you want. If you’re in a tournament, follow the rules. Beyond that do what you want to have fun and keep pace of play
