Reverence was indeed Ayrtons perspective of Clark, and in a somewhat unusual display of modesty, he spoke of Jim as "the best of the best." Senna actually commissioned a famous Mexican artist to create a painting for him... depicting the grid at Monaco, with all of Formula 1 historically greatest champions lining the grid.... the order didn't matter, however Senna had specifically stipulated that Jim Clark occupy pole. Also, if you ever visit the museum chronicling Clarks life in his humble hometown, you will see Ayrton's name on the check in list.
Sadly, both the circumstances around their deaths would be eerily similar. Both of them were in their early 30s, both suddenly and mysteriously careening off the track at high speed for no apparent reason, both known for their immense natural talent being tragically cut short.... Even more odd, the teammate for Clark in the 1968 season was Graham Hill, who lifted the spirits of the team afterwards by proceeding to win the championship that year. 26 years later, Ayrtons teammate for the 1994 season? Grahams own son, Damon Hill, who would also proceed to win the championship, becoming the first ever father-son duo to accomplish the feat.

  • @engared

Probably the greatest driver ever. He made legends, look like also-rans.
It would be as if a driver made the Aryton Senna and Alain Prost of his generation, look po-si-tive-ly normal.
And he won with anything and everything, from Ford Cortinas to Indycars. Mechanics said that he was horrible at developing cars because of his ability to drive around problems. He would take a dog of a car and turn it into a race winner. When the mechanics would ask him what's wrong with the car, he would basically say, "Nothing much."
    Legend.

JIM CLARK - By far the greatest driver ever - no doubt. He is and was "The Best of the Best" (Fangio, Senna, Prost, Stewart and countless others about Clark). No other driver in history until today was so superior as Clark - No other driver as so much "Grand Slam" - Pole/Win/Fastest Lap/Leading every lap of the race - like him. And all that from just 72 starts... !
This man is the Olymp of driving - the Michelangelo of racing - a dynamic art at the highest level. So smooth, so precise, so fast....simply out of this world. One, who won in Spa by 5 minutes (!) in monsoon rain with only one hand at the wheel (!) because of gearbox trouble...One, who takes back a complete lap (!) in Monza and back into the lead... One, who took pole on the original 22,8 km Nürburgring track by 9 (!) seconds and more....One who won Indy by 2 whole (!) laps...
In 1965 he had the most succesful year of a driver in the history of the sport: He won the F1 World Championship, the Tasman Series with F1 cars, the Indy 500, the British and French F2 Championship, the British Touring car Championship, totally over 50 (!) victories in one season !!!! For eternity and by lightyears unmatched in the sport. That`s just some examples of his mesmeric unique genius...

Jim Clark was the greatest driver I've ever seen race.. For Fangio to name him as the greatest of all time is the highest compliment of all. Clark was simply in a class of his own.. and he had no need for any of the intimidatory tactics used by later pretenders to his throne. Why? Because you don't need to if you're out in front.. Certainly he was not a 'blocker' in the manner of Schumacher.. or Senna. He was unfailingly modest and courteous on and off the track. There'll never be another.

Jim Clark was the GOAT of F1, no questions asked. Throughout his career he was always in the championship hunt (if his car would be reliable) but he was a normal man out of F1 in Duns, his home town. Not to hate on Senna and Schumacher but if you consider the condition Clark and Fangio raced and won championships they were true racers and fighters at the same time.. The reason why every1 say Senna or Schumacher as the greatest F1 driver is because F1 is promoting only these 2 drivers... So every new fan the only old drivers they know are Senna and Schumacher..

An otherwise more unknown "statistic" to me, that is just another clear illustration towards Jim being the Greatest, is the fact that he finished in 2nd place, only a single time in his entire career.... Owing to the fact that he won, and won often.... and when he didn't, it was usually far off from being able to do so due to reliability/and or other conditions out of his control. But he simply was so purely skilled and talented, but in total uniqueness to his ability atypical of racing drivers, he always drove clean and fluidly, consistently and calmly.... while remaining fast as all hell. Simply the best.

Chapman's mistake was trying to make the fastest car he could, and in the process the car being fragile. If he had been concerned with designing a fast, but especially resistant car, and trusted Clark's ability to drive faster than all other drivers, I believe, Clark may have won more championships. Maybe not as many races, but more titles.

Not only THE GREATEST F1 driver, but the GOAT driver of all. Jim could drive the wheels off anything, F1 car, saloon car and even rally. His talent was off the scale and it was completely natural- no background in kart racing as a child to hone his skills. There's an urban legend Senna at one point asked an Mexican Painter to paint a fantasy race with Fangio, Jackie Stewart, himself, Emerson Fittipaldi (this was before Schumacher's successes, obviously since Senna died long before Michael's reign; also Prost was out of this painting because Senna was being all contentious against Prost). He said the racers could be painted in any position/place, BUT pole position HAD to be Jim Clark, as Senna remarked "because he was the best of the best".
Not confirmed but whoa is that a statement from the almighty Ayrton Senna.
