Tragedy at Donington today as 23 drivers lose their lives in a single GP.

Fun Fact: Donington re-opened long after the war in 1977 after the place fell into disrepair, so the greats like Jim Clark never got to drive these cars here. Though judging by the AI, it was probably for the best...

Jim Clark, arguably the best race car driver of all time. No matter what the car is, he would drive its wheels off

he also enjoyed a reputation for "mechanical sympathy" meaning he was fast and didn't break the gear doing it, in a time when structural failure was a huge issue

      Jay Calloway
For me Ayrton Senna is the very best racing driver of all time but Senna's idol was Jim Clark! So I respect your argument.

His laptimes were also very consistent. With those bathtubs made of knives it's impressive.

Absolutely true, and if he had lived he would have won the championship in 68, 70, (71 if Chapman hadn't gone 'inventive') and 72 at least. And most likely he would be driving a tractor in Scotland as I write this, at 82.

JIM CLARK - By far the greatest driver ever - no doubt. He is and was the Best of the Best. No other driver in history until today was so superior as Clark.
This man is the Olymp of driving - the Michelangelo of racing - a dynamic art at the highest level. So smooth, so precise, so fast....simply out of this world. One, who won in Spa by 5 minutes (!) in monsoon rain...One, who takes back a complete lap (!) in Monza and back into the lead... One, who took pole on the original 22,8 km Nürburgring track by 9 (!) seconds and more....One who won Indy by 2 whole (!) laps...For eternity and by lightyears unmatched in the sport. That`s just four examples of his mesmeric unique genius...

Tip for driving the lotus, work on the deceleration side of the differential, and use the gearbox and engine braking to aid braking, i spent 10 + years playing gpl in the lotus and the one thing i noticed in your video was the late downshifts, and how using the engine braking will aid corner turn in. Im no expert but thats my thoughts
Extra thought... once the engine is doing most of the braking on the rear wheels, more brake bias to the front can be applied without control loss, and improve stopping performance

This being the 1938 circuit, people actually raced on it in cars with vastly inferior handling and "safety" (probably no seatbelts, if you crashed back then a fire was pretty much certain, they preferred to take their chances with being thrown out) compared to these 1960's motors... they probably weren't much slower in a straight line, though.

Fantastic. Love the track. My Dad took me to see Jim Clark race this car in New Zealand in the mid 60s. We were up close to a corner sitting in a stand looking down on the cars. Amazing.

Amazing to see these old tracks, they were more a rally stage than anything and I can't imagine how scary it was to drive F1 cars around there
Btw now I understand why it's called Donington PARK, cause it litterally used to be a park.. And a farm.. and a public road

  • @MMM-wg2vm
    @MMM-wg2vm Рік тому

Never realized what a cool track Pre-War Donington park was. I’ve never really seen a racetrack with a canopy that completely covers the track, except the straight leading to ascari at Monza. And even then, the trees don't cover the track quite like they do here. It would be amazing to see a modern racing circuit travel through a forest road like this.

I'm into the SimRacing business and like to try old historic cars...
One word...they were CRAZY literally crazy to drive those things, at those speeds and on those tracks.
I mean it was beyond suicidal, it was simply an hour or so constantly at a whif from death or being seriously handicapped for life.

Looks like the driver's position, at least in this video, is significantly off-center and is moved to his left. Is this intentional, or a limitation of the onboard recording, or just where AC positions the driver, or what?

The Lotus 49 is my favorite racing car possibly of all time. But somehow I don't like the way it drives in either AC as Pcars1. They are just very different from what I would imagine it to be, with both I felt like there was no rubber on the tires. However I do think Pcars 2 has almost nailed it, even with historic tires. It took me right back to the days of Grand Prix Legends.
