The best/easiest description for making lomi salmon is pico de gallo + diced salmon, Hawaiian chili's can be substituted for jalapenos, but is totally optional. Haupia can be made by adding warm water to dried coconut & straining thru cheesecloth. Arrowroot powder is usually added as thickener. Refrigerate until firm, usually 4-6hrs
Pro tip for Waiole Poi Factory, call ahead to get your order quicker. Hard to do when you order their ono (delicious) desserts. I like mixing my lomi lomi salmon in my poi and then eat it with whatever protein I ordered. Glad you enjoyed it! 🍍😎🤙🌴🥥🌺🌈 FYI, try the ho'i'o salad. a.k.a. fiddlehead fern.

Next time you guys head out there, try the Tahitian dessert. Between the cold haupi ice cream and the warm compote, ono'licious!!!

no lau lau? that's my all-time favorite... and although it looks horrible, squid or beef luau is fantastic. about poi - the longer you let it sit, the more sour it is. and the thickness can be described with how many fingers are needed to get it into your mouth. 'one' finger poi is the thickest... oh - eat it with other foods... it was my baby food (with sugar added) and pretty much every baby in Hawaii...
Aloha imuawarriors!! Unfortuntely no lau lau in this video. We have tried lau lau before and we really enjoyed it. It's super flavorful and the taro leaves really elevate the flavors more. We also tried and LOVED squid luau. It's delicious and the looks never bothered us and you never can judge a book by its cover!! We did not know about the measuring of poi by fingers!! LOL We've learned for sure to eat it with other foods. We think its great with the kaula pork and pipikaula ribs!! Mahalo for showing your support!! We truly appreciate it!!🤙🏽

Awe mahalo nui loa!! We were so sad we didn't get to visit them last year, so we made sure we were able to visit them this year and it was amazing!! Definitely some ono grindz. We love to try local dishes whenever possible. We will add the 'uala poi to our list for sure😋. BTW we love going to the Windward Mall too!! We've discovered so many local vendors and business there whenever they have markets (indoors and outdoors). We also love the fact that Leonard's has a truck in the parking lot too. Just looked them up and they've been in business since 1978 so sounds like they got something good going on. Will definitely be adding this to our list of eatz for sure bc they seem to have a variety of goodies😋!! If you go before us...let us know for sure!! Hi None Ya! Yes, we actually missed out on a few other things in addition to the squid luau like their version of laulau and their Ho'io salad. We have tried squid luau before at Helena's and loved it so we will definitely be trying it at Waiahole Poi Factory when we go back later this summer/fall. It's hard sometimes to eat everything when we film numerous places in one day. So many ono grindz😋 makes it hard to drive back to town because we always want to fall into a kanak attack😴 afterwards!! 😂 Mahalo for taking the time to check out our video and definitely please share any other recommendations you have as we love to try new things!!

It’s tempting to drive down to Waiahole, everything is so Onolicious! The deserts is the bomb! My favorite is the Kulolo. 😋However, most of the Locals can make this at home themselves. Their haupia is so creamy, but the Sweet Lady of Waiahole with that haupia ice cream and the kulolo...just 😋😋😋!! We watched a few videos on how poi is made and yes...it definitely looks like quite a bit of hard work especially the pounding to make it smooth. Is it homemade poi in your fridge?? When I get there , I’m going to go to the Highway Inn in Kaka’ako for their tasting plate. A bit of everything Hawaiian on one plate. It will definitely be my first time trying Poi. I’ve seen people adding a bit of sugar to it. It sounds like an acquired taste and adjust to suit.

Oh-Ehm-Gee!-lol....If it were me, could EASILY have spent $35+ on my olate lunch selection. Would've ordered the Kanaka Nui Plate, w/side orders of squid luau, Ho'i'o salad & kulolo for dessert. FYI....Ho'i'o salad is aka fiddlehead fern & kulolo is made from steamed taro & is similar to butter mochi, in texture but Stickier!-lol....Jose, majority of Hawaiian cuisine "purists" would take issue w/even the suggestion of adding sugar to poi.....SACRILEGE!-lol....In cases of toddlers/infants that have/had food allergies, some parents would mix in poi w/baby food to boost immunity, as poi is hypoallergenic. Myself, aye prefer my poi Sour, fermented for,at least, one week!.... Have known close relatives that used this method of feeding their keiki & several are now >6ft/225#! One of them even runs his own MMA dojo!-lol....Will need to make it down to Waiahole Poi Factory, as song lyrics say...."Some Day Soon!"
Harry if we weren't eating somewhere else afterwards...trust us we would've easily purchased the Kanaka Nui Plate!! We've been stretching the bellies as much as possible but not much luck. 🤣 I (Michelle) cringed a little when Jose said to add sugar!! Where is your favorite spot for poi? We want to try several places to see the various versions. That's very interesting to know it can be served to toddlers/infants and that it's great for immunity. We should eat it more often then!! I've been wanting to try that dessert! Kulolo, haupia ice cream...YUM! I'm no purist as I like poi with sugar. Or as a dip for kalua pig and lau lau. Must make my way there!

@@michellejosefoodandtravel Got my fix today! It was sooooo gooood! Sweet but not too sweet. Ice cream was so creamy and the kulolo really did have a fudgy texture. Almost went back for another. If they had tables I would've grabbed a plate as well. Day old poi is usually what I eat. I suppose if it was older and sour, more sugar would be appropriate. Or mix in a scoop of haupia ice cream! haha...

Next time mix the lomi salmon with the kalua pork(or with lau lau), and even mix it in the poi.

Oh-Ehm-Gee!-lol....If it were me, could EASILY have spent $35+ on my olate lunch selection. Would've ordered the Kanaka Nui Plate, w/side orders of squid luau, Ho'i'o salad & kulolo for dessert. FYI....Ho'i'o salad is aka fiddlehead fern & kulolo is made from steamed taro & is similar to butter mochi, in texture but Stickier!-lol....Jose, majority of Hawaiian cuisine "purists" would take issue w/even the suggestion of adding sugar to poi.....SACRILEGE!-lol....In cases of toddlers/infants that have/had food allergies, some parents would mix in poi w/baby food to boost immunity, as poi is hypoallergenic. Myself, aye prefer my poi Sour, fermented for,at least, one week!.... Have known close relatives that used this method of feeding their keiki & several are now >6ft/225#! One of them even runs his own MMA dojo!-lol....Will need to make it down to Waiahole Poi Factory, as song lyrics say...."Some Day Soon!"
Harry if we weren't eating somewhere else afterwards...trust us we would've easily purchased the Kanaka Nui Plate!! We've been stretching the bellies as much as possible but not much luck. 🤣 I (Michelle) cringed a little when Jose said to add sugar!! Where is your favorite spot for poi? We want to try several places to see the various versions. That's very interesting to know it can be served to toddlers/infants and that it's great for immunity. We should eat it more often then!! That's crazy to know that can also aid in growth!! MMA dojo...WOW!!

I've been wanting to try that dessert! Kulolo, haupia ice cream...YUM! I'm no purist as I like poi with sugar. Or as a dip for kalua pig and lau lau. Must make my way there!
We seriously went back for seconds on the dessert that same day and then again a few more times each time we were near/in Kaneohe!! 🤣 Oooooohhh that's good to know you add sugar to your poi. Do you like it sour/fermented more? We definitely want to try other spots so let us know if you recommend any other places. Your belly will thank you for going for sure!!

@@michellejosefoodandtravel Got my fix today! It was sooooo gooood! Sweet but not too sweet. Ice cream was so creamy and the kulolo really did have a fudgy texture. Almost went back for another. If they had tables I would've grabbed a plate as well. Day old poi is usually what I eat. I suppose if it was older and sour, more sugar would be appropriate. Or mix in a scoop of haupia ice cream! haha...
@@harleydy YAY YOU!! It's literally the perfect dessert and combo of sweet but not too sweet😋!! It's very hard to not go back for seconds or thirds!! 😂 We figured out a plan for our next return to Waiahole Poi Factory...we're going to pick up some poi and take it back with us to sit for a day or two and then try it. Should we refrigerate or let it sit out?

Jose was close. Poi is like a paste (glue). Some mix the lomi salmon with the poi. I grew up putting sugar in it but have grown to like it plain.
Close but still so far away!! 🤣 We did not think to try the poi with the lomi salmon. Will have to try that out next time. Is it frowned upon to add sugar to it?? Mahalo for taking the time to check out the video and let us know where your favorite spot is for poi!! 😊
@@michellejosefoodandtravel It is not frowned if you add sugar. Some like it fresh and some like it aged (sour). I personally like it more fresh. Poi is like the rice on a plate lunch for me...can mix whatever is on the plate with it. Safe travels!
