Charley Burley was featured in my book Forgotten Legends of the Ring. Arguably the best of the Black Murderers Row fighters, this video looks at the guard splitting jab Burley would use in various ways. He would often use this off the inside slip, at times using the 'in' jab with the hand turned sideways or with the screw jab with the hand turned in so the palm is facing you(like an uppercut but using a straight arm).

Sonny Liston also used a jab very similar to this pretty frequently, and he trained with Archie Moore who we all know fought Burley and adopted a version of his own.
I appreciate that you do of not very well known legends like Burley and Griffith. There's not many breakdowns on the old legends besides Moore, Louis, Pep, and Robinson witch a great. Could do one on Jimmy Carter? Great work.
Great breakdown Fayz. There's one thing I noticed about your previous breakdown when Archie Moore was using the screw jab as well, which was both Charley Burley and Archie Moore opponents were using the more similar high gaurd, shoulders pointing foward modern stance. Billy Smith had multiple opens especially when he threw a punch since his rear hand was in position sometimes to catch or parry Burley counter jab.
💯 the high guard is suspect to the screw jab up the middle. Another reason why I prefer the old school guard of the rear hand under the chin, the lead hand lower acting as a shield and the lead shoulder is pointing at the opponents chin in a bladed stance.
@@FayzBoxing Interesting. If the bladed stance is better overall when defense is in mind, why don't most modern trainers teach the stance?
@@antoniomosley9410 Probably because they don't know the details of how or why it's used and how to troubleshoot and find solutions when it doesn't work for their fighters.
It's a lot easier to get instant results with less instruction or actual teaching using that cookie cutter method, even if it stifles your potential.
A lot of Trainers and Promotors are also happy to cash out on fighters losses if things don't work out and sadly it's the safer bet for them to make a living.
@@aiyahuntacheimumbi236 Safer bet for trainers and promoters? I don't know much about that. But here's the thing they have multiple examples of modern fighters using the stance of Moore,Charles,Robinson,Conn and so on which proves the old school style works. Let me used an upcoming boxer from New York, Jahi Tucker was on the undercard of Lightweight Championship bout Vasily Lomachenko vs Teofimo Lopez. And was doing a excellent job and people commenting he was a old school fighter.
@@antoniomosley9410 Sounds like there is a lot about the economic and political structure of Professional Boxing that you don't know. I don't mean that as an insult. It's very depressing and I damn near cried and almost quit the Sport after getting the run down of how the Business works from Local Promotors, Refs, Pros, and my own first hand experience with Trainers in different parts of the country.
Amazing fighter. You can see why Sugar Ray Robinson avoided him.
That would’ve been one hell of a fight.
