@@LordWumbology if there are or were some plants around the soil, there are seeds in there that will be 'activated' by the water you add so it should work 😁
@@HomemadeEcosystems got the jar and just put together a little hill with a rock stair case. Everything's dead here so hopefully the rain water will get it all going again.

I build such a jar myself when i was young. I didn't open it, so the plants died three times before the ecosystem balanced itself. I used it for a referat at school and the following years was often asked to bring it back in school. At the end of my school time i donated it to the school. Now, twenty years later, it still exists.

@@HomemadeEcosystems when growing and rotting balance the air, the ecosystem is vital. Maybe the system died a fourth time when getting its place in school, before getting balanced again.
I had my dirt build with a hole in the middle after the first death, so the water creates a little swamp for rot.

What plants did you put in it?
Step 2.5 : Put some stones / gravel in the bottom before you put in the dirt. This allows the moisture in the dirt to collect in the bottom, and gradually circulate in the jar. Otherwise your dirt will either be too dry or just be mud.
When he placed the dirt in the jar you could clearly see the rocks on the bottom

This is my personal favorite project of yours. It just shows the resilience of life in it's fullest.
I've done something similar recently. Everything was frozen up until a few days ago where I live, so plants didn't sprout until then.
I live in a desert, so I wondered what would happen if the jar was incredibly humid. It has a nice greenhouse effect, and seeing through the glass is especially difficult when it's cold, but that's it so far.
Currently these are all the organisms I've noticed: I have an unidentified small plant about the size of a smaller pebble. It has a single leaf.
I have a very small grass plant with only three blades, and the entire thing is under the dirt (I made a little cavern in the dirt, so I was hoping plants could grow both above ground and below).
The last thing I've noticed is that there is a very small patch of algae between the dirt and the glass in one place. Even though it's about the size of a fridge magnet, it's the largest plant in the entire container as of right now.

I left a flower pot with soil on the balcony in autumn and in spring I was amazed to see a maple and a birch growing in there, oh, and also a tiny flower.

I put random flower seeds in a jar and forgot about it a few months. Nothing happened because my dumbass never watered them

@@-_Blitz_- To be honest, it's a bonsai pot with a Siberian pine/Swiss pine (pinus cembra), whichever name you prefer. So yes, I watered it sparingly in the cold months, but not during the frosts.

I enjoy these kinds of videos because it shows how slow things are in nature, I often am moving too fast through life which overwhelms me, but simplistic videos about nature show that strengths comes with time, not speed.
I must say, the way this guy presents his content is captivating. His delivery is smooth and engaging, keeping me hooked from start to finish. 👌🎙 His ability to turn a simple experiment like putting dirt in a jar into something intriguing has piqued my curiosity. Yesterday I made an ecosystem with my friend at school. Since the place is only for my class nobody breaks it. Insects were immediately at it. We placed some moss in it and I am excited to see how many insects there are now. All inspired by you. ❤

I did this with some backyard soil about 4 years ago. The sealed jar is still producing new shoots as the old die off and recycle in the soil. Entertaining to watch.

Question - did you add water to the jar? How long would you keep it open to get new carbon dioxide each day, or did you open it each day?
I noticed that you got the dirt from a place that looked like a garden - something that had been well tended and obviously had a lot of life in it - do you think that affected what grew?

I watered it once at the start but not anymore after that. I leave it closed most of the time. The animals and most of all the microorganisms produce carbon dioxide. The more plants that have grown in or around the soil the more things will grow, the seed banks grows over the years 😄

I am definitely going to do this.
I like this. Been doing something similar. A miniature oak and spruce trees grew in that jar, one day I found there is small pseudo scorpion every night waiting for unsuspecting prey under the lid, two small spiders, each in their half of the enclosure and so much more. And the fungus, branching over the glass. When introduced to the outside air this fungus turned brown, but would recover once I let it be and grow. Yeah, it is interesting to watch the nature do its thing.
