Residential Main Electrical Panel Inspection

  • In this video Greg Mahoney of Building Code Education performs a main electrical panel inspection.
    The most important consideration when inspecting a main distribution panel change-out is safety. Often the meter will be pulled by the utility provider but not always. Before performing your inspection know what the situation is regarding power to the panel. Exercise caution and know which components are potentially energized.

    Everybody’s freaking out about the screwdriver. It’s a Klein, pretty much the most popular screwdriver used by electricians. The handle is insulated. It’s not double insulated so he could ark along the shaft of the screwdriver itself but as long as he’s remotely careful he’ll be fine. I’m an HVAC tech but we run across a lot of sparkies and almost none of them use double insulated tools or gloves when working on live systems, especially residential. It’s not a big deal if you know what you’re doing, especially for an inspection and not actual work on the system.

    I was looking for the main 240 volt feed and I did not see it but, I imagined it was at the bottom of the panel is that correct? At the bottom of the panel was the main breaker shut off so, I imagine the 240 feeds are right before it on the bottom.

    Poking a steel screwdriver around a live panel makes my palms sweat. Use something made of wood or plastic.

    Hello, Is there a minimum height for a circuit breaker box from the floor? It appears no, however they have "The circuit breaker at the top of the box may not be higher than 6-foot 7-inches from the floor." Thanks...

    Remember the new code now requires when a electrical panel is replaced you are required to install a Surge Protector and Lug Barriers and the Lugs are required to have the torque verified. Hopefully the torque verification is done by the utilities?

    Was there an exception allowed by the electrical inspector to not comply with clear space required in front of the electrical panel? The meter socket is in the NEC required space. I've seen panels turned down because of 6x6 wireway below 4" panel. Had to move panel out 2".
    As mentioned by others, NFPA 70E violations on your part. Be safe, the life you save may be your own!

    • @thomasmarable6818
      @thomasmarable6818 4 роки тому

      The meter can be like that the NEC does allow it. The wire way you talking about was it part of the same panel, if it was then if it was, code allows up to 6 " in the dedicated space, done that in electrical room in the mall for the spaces services.

      @@KevinCoop1 I like his videos, he very good at explaining the theory and code on it, and he seems to love to learn everyday. But inspector are not gods and I will break out the code and so them. I have worked with some great inspectors in my area who aren't afraid to say they are wrong. Like the one who tried to get me to remove bell end caps on pvc coming into bottom of an open switchgear and replace with terminal adapter and plastic bushing. I was not going to disconnect 10 sets of 500 and replace it.

    • @KevinCoop1
      @KevinCoop1 4 роки тому

      Thomas Marable The inspector that you really need to be known by is the Chief Electrical Inspector. The one I dealt with most of my career, I met when he was an inspector. I think we traded our opinions for 30 years. I even got a few opinion calls from him. He wrote a reference letter for me when I applied to be approved as a PE in 2006. Not a EE, so a different process.
      I think we commented before and you work for a lighting company, correct?
      If you're still in the game, best wishes! Respectfully, Kevin

    That contactless test will lie to you on 3 phase circuits even though you test it it can lie and give you a false negative. Use a meter when testing.. after USING I have seen 2 testors on the same outlet within less than 30 seconds lie about the circuit being de-energized. So younovices out there if you are working i a building especially 3 phase use a meter to test.

    I work for Power utilility Co. , grounding inside a wall is not allowed. ground wire could overheat during a fault situation and catch insulation on fire. There is no reason to do this. panel suppose to be bonded to meter and ground should go from meterbase to ground rod outside of building. I suggest people chk with their local utility co. before doing that, otherwise the co may not put a meter.

    NFPA 70E 2018 states that when removing bolted covers that exposes energized parts 240V and below, the worker should be wearing arc flash category 1 PPE. Way to set the example for young electricians.

      We perform arc flash studies. I am glad you are concerned about this as it is important. However, the incident energy on residential is below 1.2 cal per cm2, not requiring ppe. Or less than Cat 1. Arc flash studies are not required on residential because of this.

    Can you bond and/or ground to a natural gas line at meter or elsewhere on a fuel gas pipe???? Hell NO! WTF, that is a code violation in a really serious way. ABSOLUTELY "NO" EXCEPTIONS, even for cable equipment, telephone equipment or solar panel equipment and especially any main service panel and electrical equipment. DANGER!

    • @justinkemsley8628
      @justinkemsley8628 2 місяці тому

      You need a cold water bond, a gas bond and a ufer ground. Any metal, ie beams, structurally found also. When in doubt ground it out.

  • @DC-kz7cd

    I know it’s counterintuitive but it’s distracting when you keep looking at the camera. The viewer is trying to look at the electrical panel. It would be much better if you would also look at the panel as you were explaining without turning around. No one is looking at the back of your head or your face. I’m saying this not as a criticism but as hopefully helpful advice. Your good information is being muddled by the distraction of having to constantly shift focus. Thanks for the video.
