"These are the closing days of the third era............and the final hours of my life." To this day this phrase still sends shivers up my spine. Great game and fantastic intro.
Refrigerated Memes All the celebrities in the game are fine, Patrick Stewart, Sean Bean, and whoever played General Zod in Superman II (the guy who played Mankar Cameron)
Ehh, not really? Main Questline aside, It didn't nail the Fighters Guild, Mage Guild, and Knights of the Nine Questlines. Knights of the Nine is the worst questline in Elder Scrolls history.
I remember completing the entire dark brotherhood questline, not even thinking of the main story. One day by chance I wandered near Kvatch and freaked out in horror and bewilderment as the sky turned red.
One of the best ways to show you just what you are fighting against to save the world. Seeing the Gate blocking the entrance to the city and what was through it really scared me the first time.
"I've never been the ruler of my own dreams." Well to be fair, (in the ES universe) nobody is the ruler of their dreams. Such things are the realm of Vaermina.
But the dreamer dreams and Vaermina is only a figment of such dream. Really All the elder scrolls is the dream of the dreamer so he is very much the ruler of the dream, not vaermina.
The Godhead/Dreamer has no agency, it's unlikely that it is dreaming in the same way we know it, no awakening etc possibly. His two base fragments, Anu and Padomay are the same and so is their "Children" Anuel and Sithis, that is until they "birthed" Lorkhan and Akatosh, these beings had will, though not unlike there forefathers, Lorkhan would represent Change like his father Sithis, and Padomay. Whilst Akatosh represents stasis, like his forefathers before him, Anuel and Anu
Man, I remember playing this masterpiece for the first time when it came out in 2006. Had a high fever, skipped school, had to stay in bed and all that.. but to this day, I will never forget that first sunset above the Imperial City. And that sneaky khajiit and his "your money or your life!". Good times! And like my dad used to say, if something gives you the good goosebumps, then you found something special. And listening to this today, by the nine divines, it still is :)
I am writing this because 14 years passed and i am still playing Oblivion.I can't leave this game man.i have finished oblivion maybe more than 60 times.
Does anyone else remember the great feeling you get when playing these games? You step outside of the sewers, outside of the Vaults, finish the tutorial stage and you're given ultimate free reign to do whatever you damn well please. An open world just sits there in front of you and the whole scale of it just overwhelms you for the briefest moment before you pick a direction and go wandering, working through your character's adventures, their advancement, the people they meet and the enemies they overcome. I adored Oblivion, absolutely loved it. The hours I've sunk into this goddamn game are both impressive and slightly sickening all at once, but I got huge enjoyment out of wandering through Cyrodill and Shivering Isles. I think Bethesda's games have a certain kick I've not seen in other RPGs, no others have quite hit the same mark with me as they have. It's not to say that others aren't excellent; Dark Souls, KOTOR, Dragon Age, The Witcher, Mass Effect, Zelda, etc etc etc, each had their own quirks but TES/Fallout (including the originals for both and the spin offs but namely Bethesda's works here) have been particularly incredible. It seems a shame Bethesda has taken such a step back with TESOnline, a game I've literally no interest in whatsoever, but soon I hope for more Fallout and another single-player titan in a new TES. For now, bring on Dark Souls II.
Agreed, TESO is just the husk of an Elder Scrolls experience, I played it for a little while myself in order to have my own experiences and make my own opinion on it, its definitely not something I plan on spending any money or time with.
That right? I haven't played the beta myself but the responses I've read to it have generally been average to negative. Now obviously I haven't read every review (and taking into account that it is just a beta) but the ones I have read have generally been across a 70/30 split where the majority, again, hold a negative/average view of it. Again, whilst this is only the beta and proper time should be given to see if the full game holds out, I too wont be putting any money into it. Especially with a extended service charge of £15-ish a month to partake in a game of a series renowned for it's open world, single player mastery. For now, the previous TES titles and a myriad of other, RPG behemoths keep me more then entertained, it's a shame about TESO, but maybe I'll eat my own words and be lavishing it with hours, who knows?
Jamie Krukowski The issue is that people are comparing ESO to single player games. I've played the Beta for ESO and I had as much fun playing it as I did Oblivion and Skyrim. That was a few months ago, and given the nature of MMOs, it will be a lot better now than at release.
Jamie Krukowski An unusually moderate and thoughtful opinion. No one will notice your genteel nibbling on your own words in the fuss and flurry of so many others having their ignorant diatribes stuffed right back down their throats.
Houldey Slowly its becoming something worthy... slowly.. i;ve been patient playing it 12 times a month... it;s getting better I tell you. For now, wait for skywind mod to be finished. And maybe skyoblivion. And MODDED SKYRIM AWESOME! DLC BEST!!!! Classic sucks shit though Oblivion shivering isles made me cry more than normal oblivion, and getting to see references about morrowind in skyrim soul cairn from Ji'ub, oblivion hero in sheogorath's realm... Oh my god man. Just... wow. 6th TES (after auroboros) will be Argonia black marsh, 7th, Summerset isles no doubt
I remember when my best friend, the one that got me into Morrowind , showed me this trailer. He pointed at the land and, in a time where open world games were very few and rare, said "Everywhere you see here you can go to". When the theme started I burst into tears of joy.
I was born 87 years ago. For 65 years I've ruled as Tamriel's emperor. But for all these years, I've never been the ruler of my own dreams. I have seen the gates of Oblivion, beyond which no waking eye may see. Behold, in darkness a doom sweeps the land. This is the 27th of Last Seed, the year of Akatosh, 433. These are the closing days of the 3rd Era...and the final hours of my life.
You know, it's sad Skyrim is getting the HD treatment rather than Oblivion. For one, I think Oblivion Remastered would make more money cause 1) it is older, so there's a lot more nostalgia to be pulled on since it has aged a lot more and 2) there are 12 MILLION Skyrim fans who never played Oblivion who could totally get down with Oblivion since there are so many similarities. So while Skyrim HD will get only a piece of that 20 mil, Oblivion could get a larger percentage piece of its 8 mil AND grab a large chunk of the 12 mil who missed out. Second, I while Skyrim Remastered looks nice, it's not that big a jump. But Taking Oblivion and applying all the graphical improvements seen in Fallout 4 to it? That would be an ENORMOUS leap forward. Seeing Cyrodiil in that level of detail would be freaking GLORIOUS!
You nail it with your second paragraph, the remaster isn't really that big of a jump from the current release. What they are doing is significantly easier than remaking Oblivion which would need soooo much more development time. Skyrim all they need to do is copy the fixes the modders have done as well as polish it up a bit - which should have been done before it was even released....but alas, classic Bethesda. As much as i'd love an Oblivion remaster, I can't see it happening - it's too much work for them. Also given that they have confirmed they are working on the next elder scrolls game - I seriously doubt they would be concurrently developing two large, triple a Elder Scrolls games.
Houldey Actually...the work needed for Oblivion isn't *as* high as it seems, depending on what they want to do. Architecture meshes, for example, are pretty good as is and could be modified without too much effort. A lot could be done just by applying new, nicer textures to the originals. The lighting engine is the weakest point of Oblivion and that's easily resolved. The real sticking point is the character models. The best solution there would be to just recreate all the NPCs using the character creation tools they have for Skyrim or Fallout 4. And of course the final issue is the foliage. While grass is done exactly the same, trees use billboards (single plain "meshes" that always face the player) to give the illusion of really full leafy foliage while Fallout 3 and onward used standard meshes for the foliage. Now this could work still. I mean shoot, look at some of the high-res texture packs modders have applied to these trees before, the billboards can look absolutely gorgeous. But it will be a visible difference to those familiar with more modern games. Still, my point is that even if they did it the "easy" way I just described, Oblivion would still look amazing. I think the real reason Skyrim was chosen probably has more to do with sales. Morrowind did 4 million and is too old to remaster and too weird with the controls. Oblivion sold 8 million and could be remastered. But Skyrim...I mean come on, it sold 20 million. That is, I think, the best selling single player RPG ever.
I think the reason they haven't remastered oblivion or morrowind is because of the fanprojects like skywind and skyblivion are pretty much doing that, and remastering them while they do that would be a massive "fuck you" to the community
"This is the 27th of Last Seed. The year of Akatosh, 433. These are the closing days of the 3rd Era and the final hours of my life." -Uriel Septim VII Emperor of Tamriel from 3rd Era 368 - 3rd Era 433. May Talos be with him, as he passes to Aetherius.
It's unlikely, Skyrim doesn't need much work to bring up to speed. Oblivion would need entire remodeling and more or less building from the ground up again - that's a very big project. A new title entirely is way more deserving of their time (sadly). It has already been confirmed that Bethesda are working on the next Elder Scrolls game anyway but it is a considerable amount of time off, as much as I loved oblivion - I'm all for new experiences :)
yea I always like the imperials in oblivion Cyrodiil but in skyrim I hate the imperials they just seem to be a army of noobs but in oblivion they are really good so I hope they keep the guards the same but the armour could do with a complete HD reskin but yea I would much prefer to see a complete overhaul for Oblivion than skyrim when you have played skyrim for 1 hour than come back to oblivion the graphics look like melted plastic:)
This was the first game I remember playing... The nostalgia is making me cry. That feeling of adventure when you got out of the sewers, the feeling of being free and making your own future as the hero, the champion, a demigod. I will never forget this opening scene as it was one of the first games I recall.
This is the 27th of last seed the year of akatosh 433, these are the voyages of the starship enterprise, it's continueing mission, to explore strange new worlds to seek out new ---- oh wait...
I like this opening. It shows the horrors that lie ahead before quickly transitioning to the idealized beauty of Cyrodiil and the Imperial City. It’s a calm before the storm, a contrast.
@@Houldey I always blamed multiplayer games, I never was interested in them and now I remember when I was kid I was afraid something like it is today is going to happen to games, but my blame was always on multiplayer, and I still think soo, but also it was obviously unavoidable, for majority time proved it is more interesting to repeatedly do same thing “with other players online” then explore interesting story, and considering that first thing is many times cheaper and less challenging for studios to make, so they do, so goes my random rant
+1:15 And that guard on the wall just magically appeard. Those mages must have developed some sort of guard teleporter for faster, more efficient security.
I remember the feeling of adventure, of discovery I felt when I emerged from the sewers. The whole world was open to me. No corridors,, no barriers. That feeling of entering a new world is what I have come to love in TES as well as the total conversion Nehrim. Loving Skyrim as well and looking forward to Enderal, the TC for Skyrim being done by SureAI
I was born 18 years ago, for 15 years i have ruled as my own video games champion. but for all these years i'v never been the ruler of releases dates of my favorite games, i have seen the references of bethesda beyond which no waking eye may see. behold in darkness a lack of information sweeps the land. this is the first of the 2 last months the year of 2014 21st century these are the closing days of the old generation consoles and the final hours of skyrim
Uriel VII deserved better. He tried so hard for the Empire but kept getting faced with crisis after crisis and wound up getting assassinated in an underground tunnel. RIP
God, this opening is so epic. Compare that to "hey you, you're finally awake. ready for your execution? oh hey, there's also a dragon, that's a good chance to escape"
I can't even remember exactly what I did first, but I know I completed the whole dark brotherhood questline without ever finding an oblivion gate. One day I walked past kvatch and the sky turned red and I was like "wtf is happening??!"
TES 6 has just announced and I am here to remember Oblivion’s legacy that it brought to series. It was Awesome. And I hope the new game will be Awesome.
Oblivion is what got me into the Elders Scrolls. One of my favorite games of all time. This introduction brings back fond memories. I wish they’d remaster this and give it at least half of the love they’ve given Skyrim. It’s been almost 20 years ago but I think Oblivion had a better story and an ending to the main story that was more climactic than its successor.
All these years later and I still get chills from this intro and can replay it loving it each time. The epic theme paired with the narration and character voiced by Sir Patrick Stewart. Taking my first steps out of the sewers into the beautiful land of Tamriel. What a magical experience this game was!
0:38 onwards only ever gave me goosebumps and tears ever since I first saw this trailer. The sinister music along with the image of imminent doom, transitioning to a tranquil view of Cyrodiil, only the whistling of a light breeze along with such innocent music can be heard - and none but the Emperor can foresee the evil that's about to destroy this peace.
I played morrowind first but i preferred oblivion to be honest. It has the most 'epic' feel to it.Such a grand and hard worked on game.I would upload the making of it but I'd get copyrighted.
Oblivion is the only one of the three to be an epic at all. I'm not saying Morrowind and Skyrim are bad, they have their own charms, but neither is an epic. In Oblivion, there is a strong, well-defined hero, a strong, well-defined villian, and the fate of the world is at stake. Compare Alduin with Mehrunes Dagon: Dagon is a Prince of Darkness, while Alduin is a pissy little pug just begging to be kicked to the side of the road. The idea that he could destroy the world is ludicrous. He'd break a tooth, go home, and sulk.
same, oblivion was the first tes game i ever played and the first game i ever got on the xbox, i just thought it was a normal level type game like a fps but with swored and levels. when i got out of the sewrs boy was i wrong i remeber thinking what the hell! wow this is massive i can actualy do what i want
Been playing Oblivion since 2006 till when Skyrim came out almost constantly. At least once a year I reinstalled it and again and again it was giving me the exact same feeling of joy and adventure. I've revisited it a couple of time in a past 5 years - it's still has it, no matter the engine or bugs, or graphics. Never gets old.
I wish I could go back to when this game first released. Bethesda seriously need to remake this game and bring it to modern PCs and consoles. Such an epic opening and storyline!
The year 2002, i told my friends they must put horses in the game, it takes a while to go from there to there, horses is a must! The year 2006 exiting from sewers, 1:08 starts to play while you are heading to great city you notice they put compass to game! After a while horses...
Do it, this game is still awesome. I would suggest you get it with all dlc though. A warning I will give you about it is that it can take a while to level up. Also potato faces, every npc has them.
I started this game on a not entirely legal copy of it. Never did finish it. I sunk almost 400 hours into Skyrim. I still want to finish playing this eventually. Morrowind too.
That city alone could be a game in itself, but you get to go beyond that. Oh how I long for younger days when I could waste countless hours exploring a fantastical world with a rich city center.

yea I always like the imperials in oblivion Cyrodiil but in skyrim I hate the imperials they just seem to be a army of noobs but in oblivion they are really good so I hope they keep the guards the same but the armour could do with a complete HD reskin but yea I would much prefer to see a complete overhaul for Oblivion than skyrim when you have played skyrim for 1 hour than come back to oblivion the graphics look like melted plastic:)
I still get pumped for this intro
Soon I will impress you
This was the first game I remember playing... The nostalgia is making me cry. That feeling of adventure when you got out of the sewers, the feeling of being free and making your own future as the hero, the champion, a demigod. I will never forget this opening scene as it was one of the first games I recall.
The Elder Scroll is like reading fantasy book. It is vast experience.
This is the 27th of last seed the year of akatosh 433, these are the voyages of the starship enterprise, it's continueing mission, to explore strange new worlds to seek out new ---- oh wait...
Oblivion has the most epic opening
I like this opening. It shows the horrors that lie ahead before quickly transitioning to the idealized beauty of Cyrodiil and the Imperial City. It’s a calm before the storm, a contrast.
Not gonna lie, this opening is 10000 times more epic than Skyrim's "you're finally awake"
Goosebumps
Hearing Patrick Stewart's voice as a monologue really reminds me of his monologue of Star Trek: TNG. Phenomenal.
Play this at my funeral
By the time his last words come, tears are always shed
These are the closing days of the Videogaming Golden Era, and the final hours of games made with soul, but not for transactions money.
Horse Armor.
Those mages must have developed some sort of guard teleporter for faster, more efficient security.
where Oo
I remember the feeling of adventure, of discovery I felt when I emerged from the sewers. The whole world was open to me. No corridors,, no barriers. That feeling of entering a new world is what I have come to love in TES as well as the total conversion Nehrim. Loving Skyrim as well and looking forward to Enderal, the TC for Skyrim being done by SureAI
I was born 18 years ago, for 15 years i have ruled as my own video games champion. but for all these years i'v never been the ruler of releases dates of my favorite games, i have seen the references of bethesda beyond which no waking eye may see. behold in darkness a lack of information sweeps the land.
this is the first of the 2 last months the year of 2014 21st century
these are the closing days of the old generation consoles
and the final hours of skyrim
That was so epic sir :)
Ughh.... waiting for argonia after elder scrolls auroboros. Looking forward to skyrim
Ace Hughj wait for Boston, you'll wait less 5 years or so,
Apparently, Patrick Stewart got a 90 page primer for this brief role from Bethesda, including the entire history of the Empire, and read it all.
That’s amazing. You can hear in his delivery that he knows how important this is to Elder Scrolls fans.
Uriel VII deserved better. He tried so hard for the Empire but kept getting faced with crisis after crisis and wound up getting assassinated in an underground tunnel. RIP
Not to mentioned he was trapped in Oblivion for 10 Years by Jagar Tharn
God, this opening is so epic. Compare that to "hey you, you're finally awake. ready for your execution? oh hey, there's also a dragon, that's a good chance to escape"
I've restarted Skyrim on 4 different consoles, I hate Skyrim's intro. It simply can't compare to Oblivion's.
I can't even remember exactly what I did first, but I know I completed the whole dark brotherhood questline without ever finding an oblivion gate. One day I walked past kvatch and the sky turned red and I was like "wtf is happening??!"
"I was born 87 years ago.."
I jizzed.
Sir Patrick Stewart has that effect
So much childhood nostalgia. I love this so much.
Goosebumps overload. Summer 2006 nostalgia.
this is so goated honestly.
i've seen people hating on this intro but it's actually SO good.
for 2006 but even for 2024 honestly.
Still get the chills when I see this intro! :')
Gives me chills every time
Anyone else ever get the feeling that "Oblivion" would make an excellent war cry, especially how it's framed with the music?
It actually would....
TES 6 has just announced and I am here to remember Oblivion’s legacy that it brought to series. It was Awesome. And I hope the new game will be Awesome.
Well said brother
Oblivion is what got me into the Elders Scrolls. One of my favorite games of all time. This introduction brings back fond memories.
I wish they’d remaster this and give it at least half of the love they’ve given Skyrim.
It’s been almost 20 years ago but I think Oblivion had a better story and an ending to the main story that was more climactic than its successor.
This will forever one the best RPG of my generation (Born in 89)
All these years later and I still get chills from this intro and can replay it loving it each time. The epic theme paired with the narration and character voiced by Sir Patrick Stewart. Taking my first steps out of the sewers into the beautiful land of Tamriel.
What a magical experience this game was!
What an intro 👏
Not the best Elder Scrolls game, but easily the best Elder Scrolls intro.
So many great memories. This will forever be my favourite game
Damn...This opening still hits hard...
For sixty five years I've waited for Elder Scrolls 6
That music intro never gets old! Awesome game!
same, oblivion was the first tes game i ever played and the first game i ever got on the xbox, i just thought it was a normal level type game like a fps but with swored and levels. when i got out of the sewrs boy was i wrong i remeber thinking what the hell! wow this is massive i can actualy do what i want
You'd never be able to tell that the Lord of the Rings movies came out in between Morrowind and this game
Happy 18th anniversary, Oblivion!
Never gets old.
now this is a work of art
I wish I could go back to when this game first released. Bethesda seriously need to remake this game and bring it to modern PCs and consoles. Such an epic opening and storyline!
Still run chills on my arms. I always loved it
The year 2002, i told my friends they must put horses in the game, it takes a while to go from there to there, horses is a must! The year 2006 exiting from sewers, 1:08 starts to play while you are heading to great city you notice they put compass to game! After a while horses...
I still have to play this game but damn this intro gave me chills
Do it, this game is still awesome. I would suggest you get it with all dlc though. A warning I will give you about it is that it can take a while to level up. Also potato faces, every npc has them.
My favourite medieval time game of the world.
After playing previous games......Daggerfall, Morrowind,,,,this hits with Patrick Stewart!
Me always skipping past this so I only ever hear "I was born-"
We all were, Emperor. We all were.
This has no right to go this hard
Oblivion- Best decision of my life.
👎 "I am 87 years old"
👍 "I was born 87 years ago"
Grandpa gave me a necklace called "Amulet of Kings"
I called it Lunch
Tastey mmmmmmm
The most epic intro ever
i remember when i used to skip this cutscene after the first four seconds so that he just says “i was born”
01:33 HOLY SHIT THATS THE GUY! 16 YEARS and I've only spotted him just now. God bless Big Jerius!
I started this game on a not entirely legal copy of it. Never did finish it.
I sunk almost 400 hours into Skyrim. I still want to finish playing this eventually. Morrowind too.
Cannot wait for Skyblivion.
The closing days of the Third Era...and my introduction to Tamriel and the Elder Scrolls.
God I hope ES6 manages to recapture the sense of epic scale and drama that Oblivion had.
If anyone ever tells you videogames can't be art, show them this.
10 YEARS TODAY GUYS WEW
8 yrs passed since this comment :P
A great intro by Sir. Patrick Stewart
"I have seen the gates of Oblivion. Beyond which no waking I may see"
the chills
Damn it. I feel like playing it again...
and it's gone. Fuck. Where ma CD
That city alone could be a game in itself, but you get to go beyond that.
Oh how I long for younger days when I could waste countless hours exploring a fantastical world with a rich city center.
What... A... Game!!!!
This always gives me the chills
Bloody Todd!!! Give us an Oblivion Remaster instead of a new version of Skyrim every fu***ng week.
Honestly, I will never not know this game because of its music. 1:05 and onward is burned into my brain going on two decades now.
I need to play oblivion right now!! 😁
Theres a hurricane coming near my town and im in the tornado shelter quoting this
Be safe!
this opening speech just go way too hard, damn this intro is peak medieval fantasy
"I was born 87 years ago. For 65 years I've ruled as Tamriel's Emperor. But for all these years I have never been the ruler of my own dreams. I have seen the Gates of Oblivion, beyond which no waking eye may see. Behold, in Darkness a Doom sweeps the land. This is the 27th of Last Seed; the Year of Akatosh 433. These are the closing days of the 3rd Era, and the final hours of my life."
Most epic opening ever.
