As a craftsmen it’s really not that interesting of a piece tbh so many other options that could’ve fit better than a bench honestly it’s an unskilled pc
@ Henweigh To each their own, I think it’s cool. Though too low for me. I’d like a dining table similar to that. Plus he is a famous craftsman. You wouldn’t be Henweigh from the Chive would you? You
A friend of mine had a George Nakashima dining room table. He said it was very expensive but he really admired George and really wanted it, so he bought it...for $2,000.
@@michaelcampbell2848 I think tables like my friend had (he died several years back and naturally I have no idea what might have become of the table) are now going for more like $40,000.
Geo Nakashima was an amazing craftsman/artist. Tho my woodworking is more conventional, I greatly appreciate his work. George would be beyond please that his work was actually being used and not just a show piece.
You would be surprised how comfortable his furniture is. The New Hope library has some of his chairs. He also made some pieces for St. Martins Church in town.
gorgeous / divine George looked at the pieces he made as giving trees a second life....they ARE alive. "there's a spirit in trees that runs very deep."
There is one exactly like this one in the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston! Is beautiful, they don’t have nails, like the Japanese tradition. You can even seen on it!
The 2021 price of $60K is in the ballpark. I saw a similar one on 1stdibs for $55K. I agree with Don below - the legs are too short to be used as practical seating.
there is a George Nakashima bench very similar to this (mirrored to the opposite side) on a site called 1stdibs (seems like a retail enviornment) for 185,000$ right now in 2022.
The Michener Museum in Doylestown PA has several beautiful Nakashima pieces that are actually used as intended rather than merely displayed. Worth a visit for that alone.
A piece of furniture that expensive quickly becomes a piece of furniture that is no longer used. You can justify using a $6000 piece of furniture but when it’s that expensive, you start worrying about accidents that decrease it’s value. Or it being stolen. If it were me, I’d automatically start thinking that it’s too expensive to keep and I’d sell it immediately even though I would want to keep it.
Of course you can use it. I have furniture that is centuries old that is still in use. I make craft furniture that sells for very high prices and it is still used by people because it is exceptionally well made.
Okay, valuable because it's pretty, it's art, collectors love it, but it's not really by any stretch a practical bench. Too low to floor, just a flat slab of wood, uncomfortable and useless back, not ergonomic.
You have to be kidding me $60,000? The $375.00 paid originally is still all it would be worth to me. If the Guy sits on it every night then he has a better back than me. Hard and the height of a coffee table. In my neck of the woods guys carve out better looking stuff than this with chain saws. Sorry, to each his own.
It is not a settee people it is a bench and can be perfect for the home. The $375 paid in 1971 in today's money is $12000. Well made furniture can last centuries. I have pieces that are centuries old that are still in use today. A low bench is perfect for many purposes.
@DeVon Taruex It is a stunning piece of modern furniture that is made to a very high standard. It is a low bench that is perfect for the home. As a bit of furniture it is more usable than a traditional low bench because it is wide and low.
It is a stunning bit of furniture and is made by a craftsman and not a factory. Remember it is a fifty year old bit of furniture and could easily last another 100 years. I know most of you do not understand it as a bit of furniture because you are probably buying cheap mass produced factory furniture that you will throw out in a 10 years time.
Value aside that's a really unique and interesting bench. I love it
Doesn’t look very comfortable to sit in though.
As a craftsmen it’s really not that interesting of a piece tbh so many other options that could’ve fit better than a bench honestly it’s an unskilled pc
I'd be embarrassed to be seen putting that in a skip !

You guys did a great job transitioning your format to work well on UA-cam.
but I've been watching Antiques Roadshow on UA-cam for 15 years, its hardly a transition
A friend of mine had a George Nakashima dining room table. He said it was very expensive but he really admired George and really wanted it, so he bought it...for $2,000.
That’s a bargain considering most of his work is 10k+
This is a lucky person
@@michaelcampbell2848 I think tables like my friend had (he died several years back and naturally I have no idea what might have become of the table) are now going for more like $40,000.
This is the newest thing I've ever seen in this series.
newest episode? newest item? if your talking newest antique theres been lots newer like the mtg cards
There is a clip with some 1995 Magic the Gathering cards.
Such a gorgeous piece of furniture... Beautiful timeless art... Love it..💕🔥👍

I love this look of furniture. This item is stunning.
I've been to the workshop a few times with my Architecture school, it was an amazing place and still has a magical feeling.
What a brilliant and unique mind to craft such a piece. I have the greatest admiration for practical and yet unique builders like this.
Very unique piece of furniture. I never really watched Antiques Roadshow, but now I’m almost hooked on it
What a beautiful piece!!
Worth every penny. Beautiful.
Beautiful piece
This is an extremely cool piece that this family has. If it hits anywhere near 100 grand....sell!!!
An absolutely fabulous piece of artsy furniture.
What a lovely family heirloom.
He’s such a talented artist! Would love to own a piece one day
beautiful natural wood bench
Incredibly beautiful.
Wow. Just beautiful!
That piece is glorious.
gorgeous / divine

"there's a spirit in trees that runs very deep."
Beàutiful piece!
Lovely design and flow
Truly a master!
That thing looks brand new.
Imagine how much of a pain it would be to get it there
It would be weird sitting on a genuine piece of art.
There is one exactly like this one in the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston! Is beautiful, they don’t have nails, like the Japanese tradition. You can even seen on it!
" You can even seen on it!" ???
You better not take my picture on it when I pose for my wife. Do not make me seen buddy!
Awesome
The provenance. Astounding.
My ex wife liked all kinds of wood 🪵 . She was a woodworker while I was at work.
What ever pays the bills
Way too much info
I'm guessing she did some contract work? Maybe had the plumber come over to lay some pipe?
She had to get it from somewhere.
😂😂😂
This guy is going to sit on this $40k bench in his living room. Wow
@3:34 The graphic says the 2021 value has now increased to $60k. The guy has to increase his insurance coverage.

They are absolutely not too short to be used.
The legs are irrelevant... it's the PRICE that makes it totally impractical for seating.
Coolest MCM bench I think I've seen
It really deserves to be in a musuem !!!
"We use everyday in the living room"
Yep made to sit on.

I would probably put cushions on it for comfort.

But who among us isn't? 😛🍆
Calm down Beavis! 😂

Hi could you design the most uncomfortable couch ever? Thank you
I both love and hate that bench.
Google Nakashima first result is a bench that looks exactly like this one from 1973 selling for $173,250.
$375 in 1971 was a mint
Even at $2,400 now that’s a steal.
Score 👏🎉🥳 beautiful but I'd be afraid to sit on it after hearing that ☺️
How much ya think a old signed by george barris hot wheels batman car is worth
1billion
Glad some guys prefer antiquing with Mom.
Tried to sell the one I made one guy offered me 7.00 dollars I said no cause he wanted me to deliver it.
You just have to be patient. In 50 years it will be worth 8.
If you made a piece of furniture like that it is worth far more than $7.

It was made to be used!
Matt kmoch why not!
Prolly not on that one, it looks mighty uncomfortable.
His mom had great taste!
The fact of $375 for a Nakashima bench
It looks like it would be too low.
45k!? - no one is allowed sitting on it in the livingroom anymore!
Looks like firewood.
$45k on the low end. I can easily see this going for $90k+
it looks beautiful but also very uncomfortable
Sell it while the market’s hot!
It’s beautiful but it doesn’t look like it was made for sitting at all. It’s just an overgrown $40K knickknack.
It is perfect for sitting on as a bench. It is not a settee.
Nosy Karen in the back apparently couldn’t hear well, enough.
good eye sir.
You seen her guns? Dam she could lift that bench with one hand!
That’s funny! iPad to go back and check. Pythons for sure
It might need some cushions
That lady on the background, her arms like are hding another antiguity there. :V lmao
Nice, but for a bench, the legs seem very short.
Guess it was designed to look at, not to sit on.
Check a woman in the back with yellow shirt lol
Nice piece, but no way is that comfortable to sit in,no way.
It beautiful, but it looks very uncomfortable and impractical.
Don't knock it till you try it, Bob
Bc you are not used to its beauty and design
Bob, stop it already and tell us more about how practical futons are please.
It is a perfect bench it is not a settee.
It’s a piece of art, Bob, not a piece of furniture.
Looks uncomfortable
Not to a termite

I'd use it for firewood
Lowe's has those for $99.99
Trust me it is junk.
I’ll be the critical one here: doesn’t look practical at all.
Not about practicality it’s about originality.
But it's a great conversation piece...
I could definitely see myself getting a pillow, putting it on the end and lying on it 🤣

Amazing and beautiful
