I like this collector - he knew what he bought, every detail. He didn’t buy the bat to make money, even though he knew he would, he makes me feel he bought the bat to own a piece of history.

@@hankster0878 of course. But it ain’t $80,000 for this fella. Also if he was in a disaster and needed food and water for his family $12 worth of rice, beans and bottled water would get you his bat and his car.
He'll never sell it (I believe it), but 10 years from now his grandkid will walk into Pawn Stars Season 22 with "I have a bat that belonged to my grandpa. Want to sell it".
You would be amazed most are like oh it's a family heirloom it's priceless blah blah then hear it's worth 10,000 plus and they are running to the auction house.

God, that is the truth.
I have a picture from 1980 of my father, Joe Di Maggio and me at the Stardust hotel in Vegas having dinner. My father was a friend and hired Joe as the spokes person for Mr. Coffee in the 70's, so I had the pleasure of his company on several occasions. I should have had him sign some stuff for me though, but that would have been obnoxious so I abstained. Wasn't my style or my fathers, that's why he enjoyed our company.

I met Joe at an autograph signing back in 1987. I didn’t notice whether Joe’s hands were noticeably large, however the one thing that did make an impression was he had a tremendous grip and an incredibly firm handshake at the age of 72.
He's from the greatest generation of men..... God broke the mold after that generation.
Like my grandfather. The grip strength he had even at 85 was ridiculous. Strong as an ox for a 180lb man. He was still physically healthy at 92 but lost his mind to dementia. Died at 94. Spent the last 2 years just telling my dad he wanted to go.

That bat is a major piece of American history. It’s so cool that he has a little snapshot of something that brought excitement and joy to so many people’s lives. If that bat manages to stay untouched in a lockbox or display case and preserved properly for another generation or two, his family might be rich by then because of it.
The smell of that bat, the feel in the hands, signed by Mr. Coffee himself is the essence of America all wrapped up in a Louisville Slugger.

@@999alex9991 I don't think that's what he is referring to. Pawn Stars is filmed wih a style to hype the viewers up, and a lot fake scripted dialogues. Antiques Raodshow is REAL.

A lot of people say they will never sell things, but when something is worth a lot of money, and, in order to protect it you have to have a high insurance premium, things get sold.
, I'll never sell it'.....but when I die, my kids will, and they'll get the house and my bank account and everything else I own. SELL THE BAT MATE....and treat yourself to something really special..!!

1976 is 45 years ago. The bidder looks 60. So he bid on this bat while still a teenager!

Only after a 3 minute segment of them praising it and talking about a story when the old man got to meet Joe in '54 over a game of poker.
Thanks for sharing! As a third-generation Yankee fan (even though I don't watch that many games), I love seeing items like this bat appraised on Antiques Roadshow. I can't wait until this COVID pandemic is over and PBS can take this show back on the road!

Awesome investment! In the late 70’s my uncle Billy, who was a scout for the Atlanta Braves, gave me a game used Hank Aaron Bat. In 1990 I gave it away to some kids playing baseball between the houses... I didn’t realize what I had at the time. Sure wish I had kept it.
Riiiiiiiiight. Your uncle gave you a bat used by Hank Aaron and you didn't know what you had.
Keep that story to yourself. I'd be embarrassed to tell that to anyone.

Story update ! She found out how much it was worth , dies of a heart attack , he sold the bat , went to Vegas and had the time of his life. Now lives in a trailer with " Ginger " and is happy.
No, now she is even more mad, since it is worth loads, and her moron of a husband wont sell the bloody thing.

Not a bad investment of $147. This was a really cool story and episode about this bat.
The only person who would call DiMaggio the best player ever was DiMaggio. He was great, one of the best, but few people, if anyone with knowledge, would say the best ever.
I don't know much, and I (like I assume most other equally ignorant people would) just kind of thought that the best was Babe Ruth. DiMaggio doesn't even have a candy bar named after him!
DiMaggio was undoubtedly a superb player, but nowhere near the best ever. In my opinion, that would be Willie Howard Mays.

Before 1980 or so almost nobody really cared about baseball memorabilia and it was surprisingly easy to get artifacts for low prices back then.
Harry Truman, Doris Day, Red China, Johnnie Ray

After watching that video, I don't know who Walter Winchell or Johnnie Ray is, or what happened at the South Pacific, but I do remember Joe wouldn't look up when Cosmo Kramer howled at him when Joe was dunking his donut in his coffee. DiMaggio was a dunker.
Why dosn't Cooperstown offer a fair price for this ? This is actual historical.
The likes of Dimaggio, Aaron, Ruth, grew the game to what it is today.

I'm a professional body language expert. His reaction to the value shows that he was hoping the bat would be valued at a lot more. He is shaking his head whilst saying how great the valuation price is. This is a huge telltale sign of his disappointment.

And that’s why when you send in sealed bids for an item, never use a round number like $130, always throw a little change on top and make it $131.25 or something so you just barely beat the other guy
