When a head producer is a massive, legit turbo-nerd fanboy, good things can happen.
I think sakurai is a good example of that
@@exetone some hard facts! Same could be said about James Gunn or Taika Watiti
I haven't heard the term "Turbo-Nerd" for years
@@MentalLiberation Yess! Two of the best writers around rn.
@@thomaskane7810 I like to imagine it in terms of an actual automotive turbine. Like a nerd who manages to take his own nerd exhaust and use it to forcibly induct more nerd power. Nakayama clearly loves the creative history of Capcom fighting games, and hasn't hesitated to blast that passion out into the world. Truly deserving of the turbo-nerd label.
Seeing Max gush about art makes me so happy because I'm gushing alongside him.
Wasn't Max also an artist WAAAAY long ago? I vaguely remember him showing off a sketch book. I hope he gets back into drawing, if not occasionally.
@@OneColdRepublican yes he was and he was pretty good
@@OneColdRepublican yes! He made a video showing off some old art of his. Max was very into classic Capcom and 90s comic book style stuff from what he showed. It was dope.
Nishimura-San is the reason I wanted to truly improve as an artist. Her and Shinkiro are the GOATS
Same! Nishimura and Bengus have always inspired me and made me wanna be bettee. I owe them a lot
@@zetaflaremax1708 Nishimura, Bengus, Akira and Daigo are the Capgods of fighting game art indeed
@@zetaflaremax1708 yep, seeing the concept art of the games that these artists did was awe inspiring to me.
In my case, it was akiman's character select portraits for new generation that pretty much jumpstarted my desire to get better lmao. Total (perceived on my end lol it has to be a stylistic choice) disregard for line weight but holy hell it always got me feeling some kind of way.
Me too! I also collection her official art of any game she has worked on
6:20 Ryu's face completely mad/disappointed at himself for losing is fucking awesome. So much of the characters personalities coming out through this art pieces. Amazing!
I absolutely love it too! Its really fitting for his character cuz he never backs down from a fight
@@joseolguin988 ikr! It's like he's angry at his legs for not being able to get up once more.
The fact that a simple drawing makes me think something like this is truly something magic.
@@stonevicta To speak such emotion without a word is such a tresure.
I LOVE Yun's, he's super irritated, his clothes are ripped and he's holding his hat.
For real.
The run through Rival Schools was such a nice change of pace from what we've come to expect of fighting game story modes.
Nothing too complex, just enough to convey a sense of who the character is and what their motivations are.
The old win/lose screens acted in a similar way but condensed down to a hyper efficient nugget of character building.
Ditch the hour long cutscenes, bring back compelling art that tells a story on its own merits.
Every aspiring artist, "I'm pissed! Why can't I draw like that??"
Because they aren't Asian
@@CorneliousScott-cb7sb Super not true. Most people just don't practice enough, they stick to what they know instead of branching out or learning new techniques. You might not be the next Nishimura, but many artists can grow leaps and bounds by practicing with more intent daily.
@@CorneliousScott-cb7sb lmao I'm asian and even I can't draw like them.
I mean I kinda like to draw sometimes but why would you be pissed at someone because they are better than you at something? They didn't have those skills from the moment they were born. They learned them. So of course, we can too.
I like to improve myself at whatever I do that I love. Being angry at others who are better than you at doing things that you love isn't going to make you better. Trying to learn about it, practicing it, being patient and focusing is what is going to make you better. But I am pretty sure there are aspiring artists with a similar mentality to mine so you are most likely wrong.
I've spotted a shiney underdawg🌟🔎
I love how Max is putting himself in a duty to make the FGC better by giving some spotlight to the people that also make the FGC better
Thank you Max!
Fun little thing in Kinu Nishimura’s group art of Capcom characters: Nemesis is always trying to give Jill a flower
I really hope the devs are taking cues from these finds for the overall art direction of SF6. The optimist in me thinks it may not be a coincidence that Nakayama is posting these...
If the information about sf6 testers were true then the expectations of sf6 must be pretty high
As a 90s art aficionado and artist myself, it would be wonderful to see SFVI look like the old art.
Also the way they've been approaching the recent music choices in-game gives me hope.
I just hope street fighter 6 is avalible for xbox. Sucks that ST5 was playstation only.
I really didn't like the visuals of Street Fighter V, I think Guilty Gear got it perfect, kept the lovely 2D hand drawn look but made it sharp and vibrant with more animation scenes.
Looking through these, I definitely wish that Japan had a fighting game museum with wings dedicated to each major publisher. Or hell just a capcom museum. Seeing the Sf3 stuff as well as darkstalkers and mvc and all that great artwork really makes me realise that modern street fighter (4/5) just kinda feels hollow in comparison, character just oozes out of all that artwork, it’d be nice to see a return to form for the capcom fighting game division in the future, hopefully with someone passionate in charge we might see a return to the glory days.
A fighting game museum+arcade combo would be the sickest fucking thing in the world, I’d legit travel out to something like that no matter where it was
@@Arlo5.13 oh my god....aaaaahhhhh that sounds sick
a Museum or art exhibit would rock! With arcade games next to them would be like a Japanese Disneyland. By the way Japan does have classic video game arcade type places.
The new guard at Capcom Dev 2’s fighting game team really care about their history, I love it. Also, the girl next to Chun-Li for the CvS2 sketches is Athena.
Man... I hope we get a new Capcom vs whatever game soon... Maybe Final Fantasy Vs Street Fighter?
@@TommyDeonauthsArchives That sounds so dumb I WANT IT!
@@TommyDeonauthsArchives dude, Square Enix vs Capcom would be absolutely legendary. We could get some absolutely wacky fights like:
Cloud vs Ryu
Chrono vs Morrigan
Erdrick vs Dante
2B vs Jill
Sora vs Phoenix Wright
Lara Croft vs Viewtiful Joe
and so many more just absolutely crazy, random, awesome fights. It's one of those crossovers that's really weird but would be awesome to see
@@djbubblegum9975 As long as we are dreaming I would love at least some oddball character picks like say:
Aya Brea vs Rose Winters, mitochondria vs mold.
Steiner vs Arthur, battle of old fashioned knights.
Lucca vs Tron Bonne, mechanical geniuses duel.
@@TommyDeonauthsArchives i’m good at Final Fantasy VS alone in Guilty Gear Strive art style.
Kinu Nishimura's art is timeless, devs need to get her more involved in projects again. Last time I saw her art used was in the 999 series.
She worked in Code of Princess.
Also Culdcept Revolt for 3DS, I bought the game for her art but never even opened the actual game
I remember seeing this on stream and thought these pieces are a time capsule of how fighting games were back then.
It's the 30th anniversary of Nishimura Kinu starting to work at Capcom. Most known for her art on the Street Fighter Franchise. Ms. Nishimura also did the art for The King of Dragons, Saturday Night Slam Masters, the Darkstalkers Franchise, Rival Schools: United by Fate, Armored Warriors, Gunspike, Dungeons & Dragons: Shadow over Mystara, and Tech Romancer.
I knew that style felt familiar. Something about it just kept poking me to ask, "Where's Techromancer?"
They said DnD too? Man. Those were some of my favorite wuarte muncher games and still stuck with me.
Always love seeing her art! There was also an unreleased game called "War of the Grail", the flyer art is pretty cool too
Don't forget Cyberbots! Those were some of my favorite designs!
FELLAS. You have to understand: in a time where (admittingly a while ago in Sega's case*) companies like Sega were just throwing all of their masters and art work into a literal dumpster fire *just* to cut off their own nose, these glimpses into the past are becoming a HUGE rarity.
Never tried to auction stuff off or anything. It was literally the embodiment of "Quick smash all these crt tv's before smash players get ahold of them!"
They literally burned shit so people couldn't get it.
Wait what happened with SEGA?? If you don’t mind me asking, they are burning classic artwork from past projects?
@@CountOfMonteCristo_ Its been said that Sega has done a poor job at preserving the master copies of some of their old titles. It's why when a new Genesis Collection is released, it's the same 20 or so games.
@@CountOfMonteCristo_ Sega are TERRIBLE at preservation.
……A CAPCOM GAMING MUSEUM?
YES, I COMPLETELY DIG THAT!! THAT WOULD BE INCREDIBLE!! Can u imagine a Monster Hunter section? OH! A Megaman Legacy section!! YEEEEESSSS!!!!!
Yeah but if you have a museum for Robot Masters, it's gonna attract King and next thing you know, we've got an army of evil robots attacking the city.
@@SgtSega I like that reference there.
@@SgtSega Here's your thumbs up good sit. Thank you for the nolstaga hit.
@@SgtSega Extra attraction for me. I'll be taking pictures nonstop while super Bass destroy the town to prove he's better than Mega Man.
@@SgtSega Lol! Nice reference.
Street Fighter Alpha 3 is one of my favorite games ever and part of it is because of the incredibly cool artwork that served as loading screens in that game.
You must of had the PS1 version, Because I did too, I loved seeing the artwork while waiting for the game to load.
I don’t really have any personal history with Capcom’s fighting games, but seeing official artwork of Ace Attorney characters in a different art style at 12:58 is equally exciting to me! Capcom is able to pull crossovers off as well as they do because all their characters are seriously spectacular from a design standpoint.
Love that one I found that one on danbooru randomly
Classic Bengus art is something else, man. The original Darkstalkers artworks are some of the most beautiful and imaginative stuff out there. It's really a testament to how amazing those character designs are and it's a crime how underrated the crew as whole is.
Shows appreciation for Capcom's Fighting Games and General Legacy, Remembers Old forgotten Games AND is a huge SNK fan?
Yeah, I feel Capcom's Fighting Games will be fine in Nakayama-San's Hands
I was today years old when I found out that I can have a crush on, not a person, not a living being, but on a whole-ass art style
Fantastic vid, Max. As a young artist entering "The Biz" in the mid-90's, this era of Capcom was something I think a lot of artists, especially character guys held as the high benchmark back then regardless of which particular genre of videogames we were working on. I can feel my wallet still shuddering when I think of the cost of importing all those Capcom artbooks back then...GAMEST Mook VOL 17, Capcom Design Works.
As far as I'm concerned, those volumes are the "Rosetta Stone" for the ideal in videogame character concept art.
Damn, this really pulls some heart strings. Basically all my teenage years were about drawing and getting inspiration from those artworks; sending them to contests, in videogames magazines. That's absolutely amazing and nostalgic! :')
Woo!!! Love art. Old school Capcom art has always has this eye popping appeal to them.
me to this coming from 2002 guy... who loves classics games
kinu nishimura is the goat character designer. IMO shes the best in the industry along side Akihiko Yoshida.
BENGUS is my hero
Akihiko Yoshida is my all time favorite, always makes me happy to see someone giving him props.
My dude...As a hobbyist artist myself, this is literally a gold mine!! Thanks a bunch for sharing, man. I really sympathize with the whole artbook reference on our early days, or any days of an artist's life haha
Keep em coming!
Nishimura-san is one of my favorite artists ever, probably the FIRST time an artstyle in a video game touched my soul as a kid playing cvs2
This art is so godlike that it makes me wanna take my sketchbook out and randomly draw stuff
As an artist myself, I appreciate the artistic limitations and perspective of the drawings
Old fighting game art is some of the best. I always loved the marquees and side panel art on Capcom arcade cabinets.
💯
Caught you talking about this on a separate stream, I didn't realize all the recent art I had been seeing on Twitter was being shared by Nakayama or who he was within Capcom. So thanks for sharing the info, Max! That 90's Capcom art is a HUGE reason why I pursued a job in the creative field.
Nakayama teasing us with a playable Capcom All-Stars can is not something i was expecting.
ikr
I would LOVE if they sent all this to UDON to make a Capcom Archive Collection Book.
Admittedly I was hype and little angry that Capcom Japan let old achieved art works in corner of an office out of neglect. Capcom could had gotten tourism money if they had a Capcom Museum of lost Capcom Art work of 70s to current era.
Upper management is an absolute shitfest from the 2000's based from all the vids detailing their failed games. Capcom Fighting Jam was a symptom of bad things to come.
@@lipstickzombie4981 I'm still mad about how they handled (or didn't) the classic Resident Evil remakes.
I need an art book of all this shit man, as someone trying to learn this stuff, I could wish for nothing more
There is the "Darkstalkers Official Complete Works" book with at least some of this stuff in there, but I'm guessing there aren't any with all of it, hence his digging.
But yeah, I do too man. It's so cool and inspiring to look at.
Capcom should definitely release the Capcom All Stars game in some way.
I do hope Capcom fixes their fighting division, we need Rival Schools 3 and a New Darkstalkers. Capcom Cup should be more than just Street Fighter.
Agreed, we really dont need a SF6. The release of Akira and seeing how everyone is hyped and got people playing SF5 shows how much people want a new rival schools
Not gonna lie, this is now one of my favorite if not THE favorite video in Max's long history of videos. Now if we could only see PowerStone sketches. I absolutely loved that game.
I really hope SF goes back to the 2.5D anime style like how arcsys does their games.
Seeing Max gush about art is so cool to see.
No JoJo art = sad… but seeing all that 90s SF, Marvel and Darkstalkers stuff is fantastic
Tbf most of that is just araki doing that. Even midler’s redesign was done personally by araki.
Part of me is thinking the JoJo franchise got hold of the art.
Kino Nishimura is legendary. Everyone should put some respect on her name when they say it.
Thank you for featuring this, we need more people with a reach like yours to champion archiving old artwork. Capcom's work is second to none and while a lot of it is archived, it's a fraction of what exists because their output was non-stop back then.
Thanks for this, Max. There is so much nostalgia hitting me right now, I think I'm gonna get KO'ed by a 99-hit combo! I just followed Nakayama-san, kudos for bringing this up and super Kudos for Nakayama-san for giving us fans an insider's view of original artwork in the CAPCOM vaults!!
First of all, that's amazing, I love it when old art of a legendary franchise is amazing
Second of all, it's good that people like him are willing to dig that up just for viewing
the use of color and lines in these sketches are amazing
From what I recall, Capcom fighting all stars also ran into a lot of issues with the games on location crashing. There would be location tests and people would complain that the machines crashed
man kinu nishimura is one of my biggest art inspirations and no one i talk to ever knows who she is so seeing max absolutely gush over her art makes me wanna cry, this is so amazing ;-;
All this gold just sitting there fading away is a sure crime, and yeah marvel vs art would be amazing, props to this guy for finding all this old stuff, I love it.
The Artist for Street Fighter II The Animated Movie is Shuko Murase! He also did the Darkstalkers Animated OVA Series! Absolutely phenomenal!
This art is INCREDIBLE
Can we get a Capcom fighting game that's hand-drawn but super fluid looking
Kind of like Mega Man 11 or what Tatsunoko and Marvel 3 did but purely 2D
agreed
using strive technology
Wait mega man 11?

Surreal. I haven't drawn with any real sorta passion sense like 2015 or earlier, but just seeing those lines got me pumped. Can't wait to see what else this guy digs up.
Seeing this and in 2 years we have Capcom Fighting collection, and now waiting the MvC collection, seeing that 2 SNK characters are going to be on SF 6, the dude is the best, Nakayama-sam is THE BEST, maybe all the MvC 2 art is on the collection, the only thing we maybe see later is an CvS 1 and 2, both of them Nakayama-san and Matsumoto-san are LEGENDS.
I'm a fan of hand-drawn art myself. Love that Max gives us information to go along with the gushing. All these years, had no idea a lady did some of that 90's art I loved. The more you know.
The 90s was the best decade for Anime, Video Games, Comic Books
Kinu Nishimura's art for the cover of Capcom Design Works is honestly iconic. So many characters crammed into one artwork and they're individually distinct from each other. It's been recreated for other Capcom related artbooks by other artist, and also the Overwatch artbook.
7:40 this Chun-li piece has literally been my phone wallpaper for years now
7:30 that Chun li one is beautiful capcom art always looks awesome especially the old ones like mvc.
Kinu Nishimura is such a godess of artwork I NEED MORE!!!!!!
I miss this passion in games today.
If SF6 turns out to be the game of our dreams then Nakayama should heralded to the level of Iwata, Sakurai and Kojima
We're still talking about Capcom here, some of these people thought Abigail and fucking Dan needed to see the light of day again. I'd *heavily* temper my expectations.
@@melvinshine9841 um people actually wanted Dan back

He's going to be pogchamping in the thumbnail next
This is amazing and brings me back to when i was deep in art as well. They were masters at their craft!
I live for this stuff. These are the kind of things that I like just being a nerd about it’s so cool and I love it. I wish more game companies did this.
Nishimura has the most fun ideas for Capcom/SNK fan service illustrations... in every sense of the word.
That Chun Li artwork looks great, and I like how her face was drawn.
Dood, thanks for this. This takes me back ages. I would have missed this if it wasn't for you Max, thank you!
those Kinu Nishimura pieces looked freakin amazing
This is the coolest shit to see as a fellow artist and a fighting game fan. This is absolutely badass
Jesus Max is so cool 😭
Wow... Kino Nishimura's art is perfection.
Man those MvC1 artworks looks so freaking precious
This archive is amazing. So many treasures.
Capcom made my childhood😖
The OST for MVC2 is so criminally underrated, just hearing it brings me back to the days of taking turns with my little bro trying to beat the arcade mood.
This is amazing artwork capcoms artwork is always amazing especially back in the day hell even there animations were insane for the time
Great timing, i was just looking for more capcom concept art! Thanks maximillian
Those lines.... God! I ADORE such crisp line work. It's almost a lost art now just solid, clean pencil work giving the move to digital.
Thank you for sharing, both you and he.
Kinu Nishimura is my most favorite Capcom artist ever. She fuels me to keep improving my own art. Hearing that she's Max's favorite artist also makes me happy :D
GOD there's so much good art being displayed and I Love Max's reactions!!!
This artwork is so good - I love the style and gritty sloppiness while keeping everything in perspective- outstanding
I legit was an art nerd for 90s capcom like max. I used to buy the art books from Japan. I'm so happy to see stuff like this from in house capcom and gives me hope in sf6 and more. Please have a good art style
Nishimura is your favourite capcom artist?
max confirmed for exquisite taste
12:58 If you look at the top right, you can see Carlos from RE 3 is drawn in his remake design and not his old one.
For me the artwork was always one of the best things about Fighting games, some of the Capcom and Snk pieces blew 10 year old me away
Sadly the only times Capcom looks back on these is when they make those artbooks... and they haven't released one in years 😭
PS: Don't forget New Generation also had those win/loss poses!
Nishimura is god status, her art is so beautiful, I'll happily pay for a book with all that gorgeous art
Capcom art, and it's characters, are the reason why I love pixel art and pixel sprites so much. 3D is amazing now, but really good on point pixel art or that pixel art style is just unbeatable.
Edit:
Can we just have another 2D vs game? Completely in house... Street Fighter Vs Darkstalkers, or something. I would buy the shit out of that game.
Totally agree the marker art no computer is just amazing, always thought that since I first saw it years ago.
I can gush about Kinu Nishimura art all day. It's so good.
13:21 I am turning that Sakura figure into a meme and there’s nothing you can do to stop me.
Punisher stuff makes me wonder if this was the beginning of what was announced one week ago
I'd love a video series of Max looking at fighting game concept sketches from all over fighting game history and gushing over the process of creating characters, dynamic poses, coloring and shading! This is all I do when I'm looking for inspo' for a piece I may do, it would be such a great time for all the artists subscribed!
Great artwork, my favorite video game artist is Kita Senri for her work in Fire Emblem Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn. But I will also look up some of her old work back in her SNK days. Great art should always be appreciated.
I love seeing stuff like this! Concept art is really facinating!
Nishimura's character design of Chun-Li will always be my favourite.
That was Athena Asamiya with Chun Li in that Kini Nishimura line art for CvS2 at 4:22 and 13:58. The star on the headband was a dead giveaway. The line art pages after with Hikari, Morrigan, Cammy, Mai, and Nakoruru sealed the deal.
Breh I love concept art of my favorite games
I’d pay sooooo much for one of these originals
Thank you for sharing this!
Nakayama just woke up and decided to be awesome
Even since max talked about this in another video I've been waiting for this, everything looks great.
