Synopsis:
Johnnie is a would-be songwriter; Newton is a would-be inventor. Both work at a cigar stand in the lobby of an office building. Johnnie wants to sell a song to Winfield Lake, a song publisher and the owner of the building. Lake's secretary, Mary, is Johnnie's sweetheart. When Lake turns up dead, circumstances conspire to make Mary and Newton think that Johnnie is the killer. They conspire again to implicate Mary, who goes to jail. But who really shot Lake? Who is the Black Widow, the blackmailer who had threatened him? The other characters in this wacky murder mystery are: Lake's suspicious wife, a self-satisfied private detective, a seemingly slow-witted janitor, Lake's auditor, a songwriter who thinks Lake is stealing from him and another who thinks everyone is stealing from him. It's up to Newton and his truth machine to reveal the real killer.
Reviews:
Wheeler & Woolsey are cigar-stand clerks who have to help solve a rash of murders by the mysterious "Black Widow" when Bert's girlfriend is falsely accused of murdering her boss. There are a couple of cute songs, a lot of slapstick, and plenty of that Wheeler & Woolsey (nit)wit that we all love so much (or should). Plus, we get the added bonus of Betty Grable playing the girlfriend, and she's cute as a button and very entertaining. And Willie Best adds his comedic genius to the pot along with a large group of other funny black actors who all wind up in a glorious chase scene as the finale of the film. George Stevens directed this one before he hit the bigtime. In fact, it seems that this was the boost his career needed. You can feel his contributions all over the film as it doesn't follow the traditional W&W formula so closely. It's different but just as much fun. There are some inspired gags, like the recurring use of a truth-telling device that Woolsey invents. And that chase ends the film on a high note, not a single chase gag left unused. All-in-all it's one of the better W&W comedies. It may not have as many laugh-out-loud moments as the best of them, but it is consistently cute and smile-inducing all the same.
