Synopsis:
In the small town of Crown Port local attorney Bill Adams is trying to break up the ring of corrupt town officials by running for mayor. The cards seemed stacked against him when he gets help from a visiting hunter who, unknown to Adams and the rest of the town, is actually vacationing supreme court justice John Josephus Grant.

"Absolutely an outstanding movie. "A Stranger In Town" has laughs, fun moments, drama, tension and manages to keep it all lighthearted enough to make it an enjoyable movie for one and all. Frank Morgan (Wizard Of Oz 1939) is excellent as a vacationing Supreme Court Justice who stumbles into a corrupt town's government. Richard Carlson (Hold That Ghost 1941) is just as good as a small town lawyer trying to right a system gone wrong. The supporting cast is equally as entertaining (Jean Rogers, Porter Hall, Robert Barrat, etc...) in this great, great movie. While the director Roy Rowland (Dr. Seuss's The 5,000 Fingers Of Dr.T. 1953) is new to me, it is a marvelous job of direction on his part that also helps to make this an A movie for me."

The sad thing is after the judge died. They all come back and tripped the innocent,charged things to their way again.
A good example of intelligent and responsible writing & producing; something we desperately need more of in this age of rampant decadence.

Truly, there is moral decline, but not just in the United States, but globally. When once there was more honesty, more trustworthiness, more dependability, more humility, more moral cleanness a generation ago, there is now dishonesty, untrustworthiness, more undependability, arrogance, and immoral or amoral character, allowing for the LGBTQ community to thrive, so that "law is paralyzed, and justice is never carried out (even by the Supreme Court of the United States). For the wicked surround the righteous; That is why justice is perverted."(Habakkuk 1:4)
It is as seen at Jeremiah 5 in the Bible regarding the two tribe kingdom of Judah just before their destruction by King Nebuchadnezzar of ancient Babylon from 609-607 B.C.E.: "Roam the streets of Jerusalem. Look around and take note. Search her public squares to see whether you can find a man who acts with justice, one who seeks to be faithful........"

It takes much more than integrity in just judges and lawyers to create a genuinely healthy strong vigorous society imo! That’s like saying if you have one strong healthy hand the whole person will be fine!
Societies are whole entities just as an indiviy person is one whole being.

In this film there is one of the best speeches ive ever heard about the real meaning of government and being a real citizen. XXXXXXXXXX
I could not help but swoon over what I saw in this film. Here's a list of what I can recall:
- Man brings a shotgun into a courtroom -- no one bats an eye.
- Telephone service was handled by actual PEOPLE. Seemed to work pretty well too.
- Those steam locomotives seemed to get on well too.
- Watch the film yourself and see how many 'improvements' technology has 'done' for us or to us.

Governments were just as corrupt back then as they are now -- MORE corrupt now, I think!
Well, there is a difference. This towns corrupt local government served some of its residents. Today's entire US government structure serves foreigners and not only that, is anti American seeking to destroy.

If only a person can put aside his fears and fight for truth , there is no doubt, he will win. A group of five persons takes over the town, but only one person alone shows them their right place. Loved the last speech. Most wondarful film. 🌹

All present US supreme court judges should watch this film and realise what corruption really results into for the society at large. Politics has no place in interfering with judicial appointments

This is a fictional story! More people were being executed those days than they're now in the USA!
In 1940 there were about 150 people executed , in that year alone!! But in 2023 there were 25 people executed in the USA!
That must say something about the government and the judiciary system.
25 people is still 25 people too many!!
The number of people executed but later found innocent was also higher than its now.
More judges took bribes as it was more difficult to catch them! Now hey could be filmed or recorded very easily so they probably have a second thought before doing so.

The most meaningful yet quite entertaining movie I have seen in a long time. I do hope that our elected officials as well as our people, today, felt and acted per the judge's final speech.
A really enjoyable film! Good writing. Good acting. Good timing. A real treat in these contentious times in which everyone seems to hate anyone who disagrees with them. In the 40's most were civilized as long as you did not violate the race and gender norms. But many did work-arounds.

This is an excellent movie. I have watched a lot of TCM but I haven't seen this one. It's like TCM gets stuck on a loop. I feel like they are trying to include more arty type films, which is fine for some but I want to see more movies like this.
Yeah, they repeat the same movies over and over, and there is always some left out that you never see. Maybe they don’t own them, or they haven’t been remastered. I don’t know. Some actors that were pretty popular in their time don’t get played much, like Joel McCrea and Melvyn Douglas. I’m glad I can find some on UA-cam.
