      @@mikekinsella2822agree on some over charging.. there should be mid ground on fees. If a service company helps you for 3 hrs they should be capped and not get say 10k but if they spent hundred hrs over many years maybe..
      VA picks on these vets helping other vets though but you could say same shit on lawyers taking 33% depending on hrs spent.
      In the end there will be less options to help veterans if there is no reasonable solution and just shut these guys down. The vet knows fees up front but sometimes the level support does not equal a fair fee.

    The VA claims system is very difficult to navigate so I can understand why veterans fall for these sharks when they're the only one who seems to care. I managed to get to 90% all by myself but now that I'm starting to work on my last push for 100%, I thought I should get some help. I tried the VSO's in my area listed on the VA website but they're outdated and non-responsive. The only number who responded to me sent a text that he hasn't been doing it for almost 10 years. I looked for non-profit VSO's and one responded but is located 120 miles away and needs a personal meeting which I could no longer do as a disabled vet. A county VSO gave an appointment 4 months in advance but unavailable on the actual day of appointment with no notice or re-scheduling given. I found out because the door was locked on the day of.
    I commend you and your team for giving us good and helpful insights. At least I can turn to you for valuable resources.. BZ!!!

    I must not understand what predatory means. Do these companies NOT tell vets how much it will cost them up front? Does the veteran get a rating, then the company tells the vet what they owe? What is predatory if a vet is willing to pay? I used one of these companies, and I knew exactly how much it would cost me. And a one time lump sum for their assistance seems like a small price forl 20, 30, or even 40 years of recieving benefits. They got mine done reasonably quick, and as far as I know, the VSO I used initially is still working on the first claim I filed 10 years or more ago. Am I missing the point?

    • @xUSAFWolfman
      @xUSAFWolfman Рік тому +1

      Agree that they tell you up front on costs but if they only help you with a 1 hr call or 3 1 hr calls then that is worse per hr than some hot shot lawyer. Although, I doubt the goverment would hit contingency lawyers for hrs of support vs fees to veteran.
      I get contingency lawyers will not always win for their client but see abuse on all fronts and I think the overall result will be less support for vets.
      There should be middle ground on fee caps based on support or if the vet had support for tens of hrs over a few years.

    • @kevinhendrix8786
      @kevinhendrix8786 Рік тому +4

      I would say they are just as predatory as the shady used car dealerships right outside the gate. Nobody is forcing that E-3 to pay 25% interest on that used Dodge Challenger. The E-3 can read the contract and knows what they will be paying. But it is predatoey because the dealer knows they are dealing with somebody who is financially ignorant and is desperate to get that nice car. Completely legal and both parties agree to the contract, just one party is getting the short end of the straw.
      There are laws in place to prevent vets from getting ripped off by limiting what someone can charge a vet for assisting with a claim. These companies deliberately skirt that law by stating they are not assisting, just providing education. They also rely on vets who are confused and frustrated by the process and offer them an "easy" alternative that is borderline illegal. Much like that used car dealer chargin 25% interest.
      Some of these companies are great at what they do. I know several fellow vets who have used them and have been more than happy with their results (even with the high fees). But they deliberately skirt the law by charging more than what is allowed with some shady contract language.

    I sure as chit don't see the VA running around tryna make sure vets get good interest rates on their financial loans, this is purely about the money the VA is having to pay out because of what these companies do.
    If a vet wants to use one of these services they should be able to. 5X the increase is a damn good investment considering they will receive that increase for forever and if they submitted an intent to file early enough, they get to pay that bill from money they never had before and probably end up with money left over.

It may be an unpopular opinion but after 23 years of making claims on my own or using VSO/DAV (free services) I used two of these companies you pay 5x for. Both companies were able to provide detailed strategies and support to increase my claims in months. Although it would have been nice to keep my money it would have likely taking years to increase my rating on my own. You should not be paying anyone to file an initial claim for you. They are not going to do anything that you can't do yourself. Medical evidence and service connection is the only thing that's going to award you benefits.
    This is why I said yesterday that if you're gonna use someone else, just use a VA accredited person. That way, they can't charge you anything other than the 20% of the back pay. But that should only be if they're doing an appeal.
    None of these private companies are going to do anything different that you can't already do, unless you're using an attorney to appeal, or the company you're using is teaching you how to bullshit your way through a VA claim. The benefit of using and attorney is their expertise on how to file something supplemental to get it approved. But if you don't have medical evidence, then it doesn't even matter what another person does.
    Be smart vets. Don't pay for something you can do yourself. If you do use someone then just use someone thats VA accredited. That way, at least you know you're not getting ripped off. And don't sign a contract without reading it. Let's keep looking out for each other. Stay safe out there.

On the flip side, if it wasn't such a pain in the A$$ to get rated and such a exhausting fight to get what is deserved then veterans wouldn't need such services. Lawyers accredited with the VA sound expensive, actually they are much more affordable than these predatory "Coaching" and "Supporting" companies. After 30 years of doing it on my own, I managed to get from 10% to 40%. 2 years with a lawyer I got 100% P&T, and I also got SS disability. They filed everything. It cost me 1/6TH of what a "Coaching" company would have cost. And because they are an accredited firm, they were paid directly by the VA. @@TheCivDiv Good question - I'll find out and let you know. He was referred to me by the California Veterans Office (CALVET). The email address falls under the calvet.ca.gov domain. I had a veteran issue with the DMV yesterday and because I had no more capacity left for another slow bureaucratic step, I called the CALVET office and they recognised the need to refer me to their "Interagency Coordinator", who handles these kinds of things and other issues as well. There are formal written interagency agreements between agencies, and I guess he's one of the designated Veterans Representatives, who has to know how to navigate through those agreements to maintain smooth working relations. I could see you doing a video on this subject - if it isn't too unique to California - in the future maybe.
