  • I promised to share a video on the insights I gained through my challenge with WWF to live without waste, and here it is. It was a huge learning curve, I didn't realise the extent to which I depended on things that are packaged or disposable. Hopefully this video is useful to anyone who wants to reduce the rubbish they produce. It is a hugely beneficial endeavour - obviously in reducing external impact on this planet and living sustainably, but also in terms of saving money and living a more fulfilling life!
    REDUCING WASTE
    Consume less:
    - Quality over quantity
    - Homemade
    - Experiences over things
    Avoid food waste
    - Use leftovers
    - Comprehensive grocery lists
    - Utilising food scraps
    - Feed pets
    - Apple cider vinegar
    - Fruit leather
    - Eat fruit and veggie skins
    - Veggie stock
    - Compost
    - Challenging the system
    Rubbish Free
    - Reusable grocery bags over plastic bags
    - Tea strainer and loose leaf tea instead of bags
    - Handkerchiefs instead of tissues
    - Reusable take-away coffee cup
    - Reusable water bottle!!
    - Face cloth rather than face wipes or cotton pads
    - Period cups rather than tampons / pads
    - Use cloths and hand towels rather than paper towels in the kitchen
    - Take your own reusable cutlery if you eat places where they give you disposables
    - Choosing products that are packaged with cardboard, reusable containers, recyclable materials
    - Skipping the bags for loose produce
    - Using containers in the fridge rather than cling wrap, and reusable sandwich bags for lunch rather than cling wrap
    - Buying jars rather than cans
    - Eating at the place rather than takeaway
    - Buy in bulk
    - Combine online orders- think ahead and maximise the use of that packaging
    - Shop secondhand
    - And if you cant avoid packaging you can recycle it.
If you want to get into making more things at home - iherb is a great site to buy materials /ingredients. My rewards code is GOW915 to save $5 on first order
It’s easy to enjoy a better way of doing things, I hope this video was useful X

That's why I love working at Trader Joe's, we donate all our "unsightly" or "not sellable" food to homeless shelters and only throw out food that would actually harm someone should they consume it.

    • @ceeejayyy
      @ceeejayyy 8 років тому +12

Thats awesome. More people need to do that. Where I work, we make a lot of fancy finger food and if it's not consumed we try donate it to homeless shelters but they often turn it away!! They say it's because it's "fancy" and they dont want homeless people to become accustomed to that lifestyle. I can't believe it :(

trader joe's is amazing! by far my favorite grocery store, it's so small which is good to me because you don't buy things you don't need or didn't come for

I work at Hannaford here in the Northeast USA and we donate our food leftovers too. If it is safe for human consumption, it goes to local pantries, if not, then the next step is farmers, then is compost, and finally last resort is landfills. We also recycle the plastic bags that the bulk food come in and have recycle bins all over the store. Very sustainable.

+ceeejayyy that is horrible, just because people are homeless doesn't mean they can't enjoy their food. that actually makes me sad, cuz it might brighten the day of a very poor person to get fancy food who knows

I have 2 diva cups and I still use pads. I have such a heavy flow that I can't wear a diva cup for the 11 hrs without it overflowing. I can only wear the diva cup for 4 hrs the first 3 days of my period without there being any leakage due to the heavy flow. For some reason I really struggle taking out the diva cup. I found it impractical to wear it while I worked. I had such high hopes for the diva cup also. If I could take out the diva cup faster without making a mess it would be great. But that is my issue with it sadly. But if you are one that doesn't have that issue then more power to you. I feel like I am the only one with this issue. LoL.

Our household produces very little waste, although I'm constantly working towards producing even less (packaging-free is quite difficult where I live, the UK loves to package veg individually into plastic bags...). But it saddens me that I can't seem to convince any of my friends and family to produce less waste. I tried leading by example, I try giving advice in a polite manner but the only difference I see is that now I'm seen as the hippy and not taken seriously. Why don't people understand how easy it is to make some small changes to your lifestyle, but how important it is for the planet?

    • @miyounova
      @miyounova 8 років тому +3

Same in France ! I went to see my mother not long ago and she kept asking me "why are you so intent on buying without packaging ?". I didn't even tried to talk to her about composting !

    • @estherd.b.16
      @estherd.b.16 8 років тому +6

Same with my mom and dad. They use ridiculous amounts of paper towels, water and plastic bags. When I suggest they use an actual towel, use less water or reuse plastic bags, they just get angry and mock me for being an "overly obsessed, exaggerating hippie".

Anne-Catherine Mulhern I can honestly relate and my roommates finds the zero waste lifestyle extreme for a city girl. But I honestly try my best to live zero waste within my budget because even though others might not practice it, at least there's one less trash being headed to the landfill

  • @lowrishepherd434

I have to take a lot of medication and the waste that is produced by that which isn't recyclable is ridiculous, drug companies really need to find a way to make recyclable packaging for drugs. I do try to recycle everything I can but there are so many things that you can't recycle because of the packaging for example juice cartons, I've stopped buying juice now and use a juicer instead and give the pulp to my rabbit if I've had a green juice and put the other juice waste in the compost, you're such an inspiration Elle xxx

you made my day by uploading this video even though it is really sad how much we are destroying our world. Every single person on this planet should see this video. You have inspired me so much and I want to thank you:) My family and I try to buy local and almost always organic. We also take our own bags to the grocery stores and if not we use paper bags and put them in our two compost bins. It sometimes gets a bit daunting to think about how much we are destroying our earth but as Jane Goodall says "Act locally, then think Globally". Thanks again for all your amazing videos:)

Ela, this information plays in the back of my mind endlessly. I'm afraid of what my child and grandchildren will face trying to live on the trash heap we've left them with. So angry, how did we let it get this bad? I do everything I can to reduce my foot print daily. I hope others will see this video and go the extra step in reducing waste. It feels good doing the right thing for our planet and our children.

Meal planning is wonderful for producing less food waste. Every week, I'll look through my cupboard and fridge to see what's left, I then browse through recipies to decide what to cook that week, always taking into account days/evenings out. It makes it so easy to write a list and take it with me to the farmers market/supermarket.

  • @mostlysky55

It is definitely hard to do since we live with consumerism all around us but we can do our best. Been incorporating buying less & choosing less packaging - it can become overwhelming & depressing seeing so much plastic everywhere & people being so careless. But I've found that we can spread the good message by our own actions, and sharing as much as we can. You raise good points that people need to hear. Raising awareness is key, thanks for sharing.

Your such an amazing person! I wish there were more people like you in the world.I love how you can see outside of our standard way of living, and do your own thing. Majority of people I know never stop to think about how buying package foods greatly affect the environment. One thing I stopped doing a while back is buying trash can bags.I think they are a waste similar to buying bottled water. I'm definitely going to make more effort to bring my own bags to the grocery store. I loved all your methods, especially the one about scratching the number on the bag and re using it. Please post more videos like this one. Thank you so much!

  • @Hunnter2k3

Completely agree with re-using containers as best as you can.
One thing I even started doing is whenever we DO order take-out on those occasions where a bunch of the family are around, or friends, I've actually started collecting the tubs and containers and re-using them in the house.
Doesn't matter if it is for storing pens, notes, food waste or food prepared for a meal later in the day, I find a use for them.
And I also re-heat any food uneaten the next day. Typical take-out meals can easily be 2 or 3 meals with those huge portion sizes.
I also stopped buying loads of single pre-packaged stuff and going bulk, and to farmers markets to get those fresh foods and even bashed and bruised ones for soups, sauces and similar. Just a single tub or large bag, throw all the fruit and veg in there, done. (being sure to store the soft delicate ones in tubs on top of everything else so they don't get crushed!)
Better than having to deal with fiddly packaging usually on them! Some of those pre-packaged foods are like Fort Knox.
Supermarkets should work with the food industry to create a re-usable container market.
Supermarkets buy large containers of a product. Customer comes in with their own containers (be it glass jars, re-usable spray containers and so on), gets filled up by staff (or customer with simpler items), done.
It would save the entire industry billions in producing containers. (which they _could_ pass on to customers, they likely won't)
You also boost the re-usable container industry, creating more jobs both in the supermarkets and there, which is always a good thing.
I guess that is where the spare money could go, job creation.
On that note, other areas could be made to operate through re-usable containers methodology as well. Cosmetics being a huge one as you mentioned. You could sell ingredients for them, or sell pre-made solutions which you could fill up on your own with your own containers.
I think really the only hard one would be aerosols. But just as above, you could create a whole new job role there: aerosol refiller. There are some aerosol refillables out there just now in the air-freshener industry, which is good, but the issues is they sell entire refills and not the solution to be refilled. Its getting there.
Equally I also just stopped eating as much in general. I only eat twice a day now. Biggest meal is breakfast, dinner is a medium-sized dish with 2-3 items at best. (like a typical lunch at an eatery would be)
Having a big breakfast really makes up for the lack of lunch and smaller dinner since you are filled for longer, especially if you eat "slow-digesters" and foods that release energy slowly.
Best part? I've never felt better than I do now. My health has improved dramatically even from the not-so-bad way it was previous.
Just about to get some composting going soon as well. Usually food waste was just sent to recycling, but that's just backwards. I'm going to try get more people encouraged to doing it around me as well.
Our current society is all about ripping nutrients of out living spaces and burying them in hills filled with toxins, heavy metals and anaerobic conditions where said nutrients cannot be used by most life besides the toxic ones that tend to be capable of surviving in those conditions. Worse yet, we cover them over and build houses on them.
The worst part of it all is those wastes aren't even crushed down much, or even "wrapped" up to prevent chemicals and other toxins from spilling out.
So we have a toxic hill now used for housing and will slowly leak those toxins out over 50-100 years, and when we do decide we want to recycle all that waste, we cannot do it as easily as we could because it is buried under peoples homes.
Landfills are such a stupid method of re-using waste. Especially the current methods done in most countries where it is done where it is done so lazily.
It needs to stop. This "use once bin forever" attitude is just not needed for well over 80% of things we use daily. The remaining ~20% will be figured out eventually so storing it under potential future homes is just crazy.

    I love this video!
I don't know if this is a thing in other countries, but in the area where I live in Sweden, we have this thing called ''source recyling'', so you basicly do not mix your trash. Plastic goes in one container (a re-usable bucket), paper and carton goes in one container, metal (like cans and caps) goes in one container, glass goes in another container, foodscrap goes in a compostable bag etc, so they're able to sort things way easier at the recyclingstations :)

I now buy 95% of my groceries completely packade free (including my meat) We have always kept a veggie garden but now it's a lifestyle instead of a hobby, we compost (even our empty toilet rolls) and keep a worm farm.
I use resusable pads, washable dishcloths, washable face pads....the list is endless.
I no longer buy new clothes, I thrift shop everything (bar underwear)
And lastly...I no longer buy ANYTHING unless it's needed. Need over want.

awesome more of us are sharing this message, great filming and edit! ♡ another useful tip: small cloth bags (i bought them at Ikea) to shop small produce in bulk, i find t better than taking the heavy jars when i'm walking to the store :)

Thank you so much for this video! A lot of the things you mentioned I have been doing and will be looking into composting for the future. Your mom is a great inspiration as well as mine who reuses things like crazy and also buys secondhand whenever she cans. We also have leftovers and try to use up a product or food before opening or purchasing a new one. We average about 3 tall kitchen bags a week for 3 people, but I am trying to find inventive ways to reduce that even further. Composting will help. Thank you for your channel!

I'm so happy you are looking into wasting less ! there are a lot of great blogs and instagram accounts about zero waste, you might be interested in checking them out (they're pretty, useful and thought provoking). My problem is that for now, I live in Australia and with my tiny budget, I can buy mostly without packaging, including things like cocoa and Shea butter or other ingredients for homemade beauty products, but when I go back to France, where I'm from, I know it will be much more difficult if not impossible. We have great markets so veggie packaging can be avoided but we have very few choices for bulk, and when you do find some, there are nowhere near enough products (no beans, no flour, very difficult to find oats as well). And for homemade beauty or household items,it's a nightmare. No unrefined butters and the refined ones are all packaged, no bulk oil, vinegar, not many options for unpackaged natural soap, and if you start looking at alternatives that are a bit more out there (such as soap nuts for example), it's simply impossible to find. I wish I could change this but I have no idea where to start. if anyone has advice, I'd love to hear it ! Thank you !

Thank-you Ela for this very informative and educational post about reducing our Human waste. In my city in Canada I was to be delivered a large garbage bin but I refused I stated I would rather take 2 recycling bins instead. I dealt with the close mindedness of the city staff but I fought hard and my wish came true. I am the only house on the street and the whole city to not put out a garbage bin on garbage day, I still feel sad though that my action may never catch on with others but when JESUS comes back to this planet at least I will tell him I cared enough to try, please take some action now or it will be too late for any future generation.😇😇😇💔💔💖
