- The second full-length album by the iconic Norwegian Black Metal band Immortal. Pure Holocaust reinforced the sound established on the previous album, while adding the more powerful and fuller sound Immortal is well known for. The entire album feels like one long, devastating blizzard of tenacity and force and is meant to be heard in its entirety.

Does anyone else here find black metal calming? For me something about it and how it flows calms me.
+Punk zombie Yes it's relaxing to me as well. (unless it's more to the trashy side of things, which gets me amped)
+Punk zombie Big time(-: i sometimes fall asleep to it.
Guy Fh That happened to me once! XD
+Punk zombie That what Black Metal is about, creating an atmosphere, thats why they generally dont use solos. Ive read in an Interview with Varg Vikernes, the guy behind Burzum that each song is supposed to be/work like a spell. by creating this distorting and yet mesmerizing atmosphere they did exactly that. Songs like "Dunkelheit" from Burzums Album Filosofem "will soothe you by force", at least thats how i feel when listening to it, there is now way one wont calm down if he really engages the music.
Fischi Sounds about right. Most of the time when I listen to any kind of metal I ignore almost everything else thats going on at the moment and only focus on the music. When I listen to black metal it really feels like im in another place, like a frozen mounton top of in the middle of the woods.
Something I always found hilarious....

VÆRM Koponen My favorite Immortal album. It has a dark feel to it.
They sound frozen. It's pretty awesome. Pretty damn good time to be alive.
A capa ja diz tudo
Truly captures the cold
I was gonna say that but then saw your comment, lol
what i love about black metal is that there;s so much going on at one time that it almost sounds ambient with the sheer saturation.
+J Earnest And I thought I'd be the only one experinecing this :P
+J Earnest Perfect choice to words to precisely describe the effect. Great album.
I thought about this quite a lot, but never found such great words for it as you have. I would say it also linked to another important about black metal. The great thing is that, especially on this album, the lyrics often deal mainly with descriptions of majestic landscapes. In a way it's odd to capture the awe that such unresponsive landscapes impose on us in such heavy and thundering music - you would expect something more like dark ambient. But taking your comment into account, perhaps we can say that black metal somehow captures that ambience in the 'sheer saturation'. The music, as it were, is so full of speed and noise, that it actually refers to a sense of silence - the silence of a Scandinavian forest covered in snow.
that is awesome . I never thought about that.
I'm sure there's a subgenre of everything, but 'ambient black metal' to me sounds beyond redundant. So much about black metal is about the atmosphere already that having it purely instrumental would get exceedingly boring.anyway nice try at being tough.
The drumming is just incredible. Props to Abbath for being a metal renaissance man.
he played it slow then they sped up the tape, thats why its so high pitch.
abbath never could play this in real time
@@Firewaltzwithme that actually never crossed my mind lol I always, thought it was just somebody else playing them uncredited as it was speculated for years . What's your source for that info?
@@jimmyfingers227 A number of people who know Abbath confirmed it on Zimorog's "Who recorded Drums on Pure Holocaust" video on UA-cam.
@@Firewaltzwithme I always that that for Battles aswell. But maybe he'll hammer played as he was in a film clip off the album

Good bait brah.
Yep. It's already cold but dammit, it feels even colder while listening to this...
I feel warmer, perhaps the liquor is too strong... Or perhaps warmth is what you are meant to feel. Hahahaha!
Temperature! Play this an Emperors Night Side then its majestically cold....throw in vinglgr veldr then you are in divine realms!
I can feel it getting warmer. Oh wait, nah that's just florida
This is the closest to perfection a genre has ever reached...and this was only their second record
Yeah, isn't that crazy!! 🤘🤘
They had some demos and eps but they actually had another band called old funeral that was black metal and they still killed it
Nah. There were far more Black Metal bands that did it even better. Impaled Nazarene for example, which I always liked better than Immortal. But there were many, many more worthy of capturing the genre.
What are u talking about. Earliest albums were usually the best if we were talking about extreme metal. The sincerity and the pure youth energy.
well, Darkthrone has many many good 90s albums...
In my opinion...their best album!
Mr_DOHC and there first album too!
THERE FIRST 3 ALBUMS ARE GOOD.
Prefer Battles!
First album is rather a Bathory rip off
I also prefer Battles in the north.
this is a truly incredible album

My favourite BM album ever, it's perfect.
Undoubtedly one of the best Black Metal album recorded. A complete masterpiece, from the beggining 'til the last song. Whoever dislikes this band must stay far away from Black metal, because this people have NO idea of what truly is Black Metal about.
NeroHLVT Interesting enough if one bothered reading Varg Vikernes' interpretation of BM. He said that the primal idea of BM is for the artists to have their own interpretation of what the music is all about. It was originally never thought to be a closed format about doings things in a certain way.
Originally it was a backlash against death metal which had its sound cookie-cuttered for semi-commercial purposes. Black metal was supposed to go against that view but then the late 90's happened. And we are now stuck with corpse paint and Satan. So much for that idea.
JayElStuf futSlEyaJ I understand what you say, and I don't disagree of Varg's point of view. I really believe that, on Black Metal, musicians must free their spirit and let it flows through imagination and creativity, but this condition of free and creative spirit that the musician reaches also brings him to a kind of "point of no return", or, in other words, once awakened, he is no longer the same he used to be. The old chains, which ones he used to be arrested, are now broken and left behind, and with that I mean all the kind of moral, dogmas and ideologies that stuck the spirit and preclude it from evolve. So, I may not have been very clear on my first comment, but when I say that Black Metal is a limited kind of music and ideology, that is what I actually mean.
I hope you can understand me and forgive me for my bad english, man. Hugs!
They were only good when Demonaz was writing the music, when Abbath took over guitar (and took over the band) they went downhill
@@paulbarton4395 Abbath writes very catchy riffs, melodic, but it is more a blackened heavy metal. Listen to how raw, intense and mean Northern Chaos Gods sounds since Demonaz came back. Really two different styles. Northern Chaos wins.
..ideologies... i say Poison and Venom.
This album is one of my absolute faves of the BM 90's. Much better than their later works. Saw Immortal live in Copenhagen 1994, they were so great.
A jewel of Black Metal
Best Black metal album of all time!! I still remember back in the day when I first heard this and it blew me away!! Greetings from Canada!

I will miss Immortal.
I’ve tried the newer “black metal” but always end up going back to stuff like this because it’s just so much more raw and aggressive!
AGREED/
That's because modern black metal is hot garbage ripping off the classics of old with plastic production and no sense of atmosphere, rage and darkness.

listening to this album brings back memories from lost soul fragments. The sorrow is great and sweet at the same time. Black Metal helps its listener to rise above himself and to take a brave look into the pain one experiences in life. Long live Immortal, this bloody album and black metal.
+doomfaring u da shit man i appreciate u
This is black metal at it's finest. So dark, cold, and brooding. And the atmosphere on this album
A classic, a masterpiece, a golden piece!
"As the Eternity Opens" is the most sinister and darkness music in all BM history.
I love loud snares with reverb. Unffff 🤘
These older black metal albums are really inspiring. Everytime I hear stuff like this I get that "Hey! I wanna write stuff like that!" sensation.
Same. But at the moment of writing, my ideas are gone, or what i'm doing is just not as good like what i have on mind. Black Metal, at the end of all is not that easy.
@@johansld4506 Do what they all do----put down anything on tape,.....go back to it later. Jeff Hanneman of Slayer once said he didn't play guitar for 7 or 8 months at all after a tour; he just watched TV [before he died]. Then fiddles around, then goes to his basement, plays riffs over and over, records them, leaves them, goes back to them. Then tries it out with the band. If it works, they make the riffs into a song. Kerry King said some riffs were around for 15 years! before they could work them into the overall sound of the album they were making. There's no magic, just don't give up, just stop for a while. Go back. Hit record. Remember, Fenriz said, they were so impressed with Bathory, they just kinda made Darkthrone into their own Bathory---this is after listening to Bathory for 8 years [84 to 92]. Black Metal cares nothing on time---when it happens, it happens.

All these fucking years and I have missed how fuckkkiinnng genious dark piece of art this album is. So damn dark, cold, inhumane. As great as art can be with a guitar.
Excellent Classic Black Metal
I feel like it's actually insane how good this album is, particularly when you turn the sound up enough to notice the subtleties in the drums (something people should do when listening to metal imo).
Songwriting is superb in that each riff and rhythmic change seems to flow into another, a style I greatly enjoy. I think I physically exclaimed "wow" after the slow part of "Storming through Red Clouds" (about 18:04) - I thought "wouldn't it be great if they just restated an earlier portion exactly here" and then it happened right after lol.
Shame bands don't make stuff like this and Altars of Madness anymore, it seems.

These are the Real Immortal
This is the Real Black Metal
I can see why some see this as their best release. On first listen I found this a bit too discordant and chaotic compared to Diabolical Fullmoon Mysticism and the later albums, but once you start to notice the subtle melodies in amongst all the discordance riffing it becomes quite a unique and thrilling listening experience. It has that atmospheric occult vibe of their debut, but much more sinister, aggressive and relentless.
Raw black metal with clarity. PERFECTION
the sound in this is more colder than the previous album.
One of the ten albums of great importance for the development of the black metal scene.
Hail Immortal, 1 Milion Views :D
"Pure Holocaust is the second album by Norwegian black metal band Immortal. It was released on November 1, 1993, on Osmose Productions. It is generally faster sounding than its predecessor Diabolical Fullmoon Mysticism. The lyrics focus mainly on ice, snow, and fantasy landscapes. It is the first album to feature Abbath on drums.
The album was released as a standard CD, as a limited LP on Osmose Productions (which was reissued in 2005), and as a limited edition picture disc in 1998.
All lyrics written by Demonaz; all music composed by Abbath and Demonaz.
Abbath Doom Occulta - vocals, bass, drums
Demonaz Doom Occulta - guitar
Grim is credited for drums on the album and appears on the cover, however, drums were played by Abbath
