- Doing this kind of work at home can sometimes get a little too nasty for the space where you eat. And that's why God gave us bathrooms.

@@unclesquirrel6951 John! glad to see you!
Man I been telling you for decades its the woodchucks!
You don’t know what you have till it’s gone!!
I don’t think kathy is getting the street cred she deserves for letting this go down
Agreed!
One in a million
She is secretly dating us all.
Not to mention some very good camera work in tight corners.
@@carterlee8344 Notice not one damn one of us has gotten a sammich...
Uncle Tony isn't the hero we deserve, he's the hero we need!
He’s Elementary
I can't help but thinking of all the times my wife has fussed at me for washing car parts in the bathtub. 🤣 Thanks Uncle Cathy!
Awesome , wife and kids are gone for a month, have a 66 413 from an RV, ran fine a million years ago.Garage too cold, a couple of my fine neighbors helped me bolt it to my stand .Will order a pizza and 6 pack (no pun intended) and begin to tear that beast apart .A month of bliss , thank you....
I hope you took the toilet paper roll out before sending fine metal shaving everywhere. Might be.. unpleasant if not.
Just put 91% rubbing alcohol on the affected area and you'll forget all about the first problem...
@@kramnull8962 it burns, it burns....no wait, now it churns. on a serious note, how many landlords will watch this series and go...hmm, that's why i had to do so many repairs...
Now THAT would be a broken exhaust valve...
This is Why he is our CULT LEADER UTG!!!
I did this on the cilinderhead of my dad's Ford OHC Pinto engine when i was 16. Now over 40y ago... It had a blown HG so the head had to come off anyway.
So i took the chance to apply some tuning knowledge that i read in a British magazine called popular mechanics.
On some 2valve/cil heads the valves are partly shrouded by the walls of the combustion chamber. Sometimes it really pays to DE-shroud them a bit by removing some of the wall of the combustion chamber. The effect is earlier and better intake /exhaust flow. I did this on the Pinto OHC head (hard work because the head was made of cast iron) and also on a Volvo B230 redblock head (a lot easier because the head was made of aluminium). I never told my dad about the Pinto head but after i had the HG installed and the car was back up and running he was very impressed by the way the engine performed. It was only a 72hp 1.6L but it ran like a 90hp 1.8L
The same applies to I6, V6 or V8 engines, it's just more work. But the gains are bigger!
The nice thing about mods like these are that you gain flow over the entire rev range, it raises the torque curve as well as the power curve without having to mess around with cams and cam gears. You would get even better results if you had a machine shop do a 3-angle back cut on the seats. That will greatly improve flow at low valve lift.
First things first, place a painters heavy drop-cloth in the tub. Better yet, use a friends garage (be certain to be a gracious guest) dunno why but I really feel like I needed to add that second point there. If you work in some one else's space clean yur shit up even when they tell you "don't bother" make the space that you are working in shine before you leave. You will always be welcome back because you are showing a level of respect for yur friend's shit.
Let them know to be careful. Too much material removed on one cyl, means ALL cyls need same thing, so don't go too crazy on the first cyl. Also, try to stay away from the port floor. Not just because of the ramp, but some cyl heads don't have a thick deck,(less than 5/8), and it's also easy to enter water jackets, if too much material is removed. I can't stress this enough.....DO NOT GO CRAZY ON THE 1ST CYL!!! It's just natural to over do the 1st one. Do minimal on the 1st, repeat for the others, THEN GO BACK, and do more. Better safe than sorry. My first 12.5 to 1 wedge heads got destroyed because I didn't have this advice. Oh, and BE CAREFUL when gasket matching. Bump that bitch the wrong way, and they'll never seal, & you have just made an expensive, time consuming, BRICK. I hope this helps.
This makes me wanna pull the head's of my motors and give them a tickle. Great video 👍
Your awesome finally someone doing things that are relatable I'm sick to death of watch people build hundred thousand dollar cars in million dollar shops, now working on your heads in the shower that's just good stuff
That's the idea!! Clean up castings, dont need to go wild. Good teacher here.👍
A quick suggestion, stick a shopvac in the other end of the port it should get 90+%.
Just have a helper standing At the breaker box to reset the breaker every time it throws.
@@lilmike2710 real mechanics bring a generator into their bathroom when the port heads in the shower

kitchen and a bath remodel......Nice.
Awesome video! I remember you having to do this all day long with that collaboration video, with that dude from upstate New York. Who didn't clean his engine. Anyway as always, thanks for posting this!
That's a good idea, having a die grinder in the bathroom. Makes quick work of removing tartar from your teeth.
I always like the way Ford lays their heads out without the ports having a divider in between .We had made a tool to cut guides quicker on the drill press
When you opened the curtain I thought: OMG he's gonna take a shower with that head 🤣🤣
LOL, I thought that he was going to give it a bath!
@@bigbear5510
I took a shower with a rear window once , for the best tint job ever in the whole wide world with not one speck of dust 😝
@@MrTheHillfolk Yes, I know that. I seen your comment.👍
naw, no one ever wanted heads in the shower.
Great camera work Uncle Kathy!
Thanks! I've done my own wrenching for 45 years, still learning tricks, any day we can learn something is a good day! we cant say women dont have a sense of humor, they normally marry it! If i even thought about doing something like this in my shower, I'd be wearing my ass as a hat! wow! Do have a few questions but will wait till the end as you may easily address them as this build goes on. Have been diehard mopar since high school, im 61 now, thats a long time! always enjoy making them go faster!
When you get done there, take a shower so Uncle Kathy doesn't have so much to clean up!😉
I think that Uncle Kathy wishes that she would have never suggested this idea of the kitchen build. Especially now that it has spread into the bathroom.
Great information Uncle Tony!👍 Great camera work Uncle Kathy!👋
I think that I spent about 4-5 hours doing a mild porting and polishing my heads when I rebuilt my engine about 25 years ago. Only polished the exhaust ports of course.
Hey uncle Tony is uncle Kathy getting a new bathroom too lol. 😂 This funny and educational at the same time thanks. The kitchen engine rebuild sieres is great.👍
Watching this reminded me of the times my grandmother let me wash and prep car parts in the shower she said she did it back in the day so as long as I cleaned up she didn't care
Power is made in the heads that is for sure!
That’s the first time UT has seen a shower in 10 years. Lol
It's great to see a master at work. 😃👍
You're gonna have to clean up a little mess, Kat, ya?
My wife would be in orbit, raining down fire.
That's the best explanation for a simple head clean up I have watched yet! Thanks Uncle Tony!
A guy grinding on heads in the shower. Is this what they mean by undercover porting? Shower with aluminum heads.they won't rust. I bet Smokey Unick ported heads inn the bathroom. 👍
I am going to predict a visit from Bath Fitters in UT and UK's future!
Or RE Bath
You really need an assortment of carbide burrs..... lots more power to be had.....
Uncle Kathy is a Saint...
That carbon dust will look great all over that Fancy shower curtain ...hahahahahahahaha
Thank you Kathy for everything you endure for us Nephews.. and thanks uncle Tony.. for you know everything else..
Oi oi oi
I did mine on the coffee table in livingroom was great haha
Just a suggestion, I use a cheapo shopvac to suck the dust out of the opposite end of the port. Keeps things cleaner and easier to see what I'm working on. It also helps to prevent inhaling the dust. Cheers !!
Great lessons Tony - wish I had you as a teacher when I was first learning. Had to learn via mistakes - most of which were very expensive.
porting & cleaning cylinder heads in a shower stall....on point
Hey uncle tony...i recall an issue of cars illustrated where there was a picture of you lapping vales in a hemi head while you were sitting on the toilet...ive always missed what i considered the greatest most real car magazine ever.
Great video! If i had a head project on the go id feel much more confident after watching this!
Hi uncle tony, thank you for the tips on doing heads. I never did heads but I can now 👍
BEST video ever Tony, but you got me sleeping on the couch for a month. First, my engine stand chipped the bathtub porcelain and all the sandblasting ruined the bidet. Then I broke the medicine cabinet mirror when I took it down to roll my pushrods on. On the plus side, I ported my showerhead and it went from low-flow to mofo.
I wonder how many husbands are going to lose their lives after doing this?
Got this beat just no video 🤣and I'm still married
Only husbands with no garage , man cave, to hide in.Pedal to the Metal...
I wonder how many husbands are going to lose their WIVES after doing this?
Good practical advice. Getting harder to come by these days and I appreciate it.
The upstairs neighbor sure has been running that vacuum cleaner for a while lol
Thanks Uncle Tony, your efforts are appreciated
Love it!! I once ported a set of heads on the kitchen floor of my trailer. Great videos Unk
Things I learned in this video:
- no need to go hog wild when porting and polishing heads
- uncle Tony’s bathtub has really good lighting
Those electric things are nice. I used to use pneumatics but compressed air is expensive and noisy. Ah technology!
That curtain is hypnotic. So I didn't hear a word. Lol
Got a flashback to headbytes.
Tony is a REAL, "Old School" Auto Mechanic" , with obvious decades of experience. Handling used engine parts, porting Cylinder Heads, bare-handed. NOT like some "Hollywood Technicians" who wear latex gloves, to install a new RADIO!
Very good info as usual.
I figure a dust mask is a good investment also for this kind of job.
Super. Cool. Thanks for sharing.
Wow! Those dodge heads had some serious casting flash! I’m sure porting them will improve a bunch!
Ahahaahhh! I just spend the last three days cleaning up car parts in my bathtub! I´m wrenching on my van on the street right in front of my apartment block...
I think Tony was my dentist in a previous life.
Once again good plane and easy instructions and demo of how to do things on your engine mods , thank Tony
Good video, just keep in mind to have your finger on the volume control buttons. Lol.
Thanks been wondering what I needed to shape up. Always heard it was time consuming but worth it
Wacthing this video my ears were ringing....i cant imagine how loud inthe bathroom.... and of coures...no earplugs on UT 👍
Your engine build videos and VGG s is giving me the confidence to refresh and massage a GM 305 I have laying around in the garage. If that goes well I'm going to rebuild the 350 in my Malibu. Thanks for doing what you do UTG.
And make sure your not standing in a tub of water while using power tools lol
Dude is living the dream !!
Good job Tony👍👍👍👍👍
Nice thing about the tub is there's towels and a curtain for cleanup. I rebuilt my datsun trans in the apartment kitchen and the bathtub served as my parts washer.
Hahaha parts in the shower. Wifey knows very well about this.. frequently have jeep parts in the shower scrubadubadubing it haha
I just rebuilt the original 350 from my truck, with the GM 193 TBI heads. I only spent about two hours per head on the porting, but the castings were so much cleaner than what you're dealing with. I also used the Harbor Freight sanding cone set after the carbide bit. Fun stuff! One quick tip - the last time the urgent care clinic doctor removed metal from my eye, she recognized me from the previous time. I was wearing safety glasses, but now I wear face-fitting goggles.
This series has inspired me to build a 383 engine block that I bought for cheap a year ago. I would love to see a conclusion to the series, so far the entire series have been incredibly educational. Being a young person in college with little money and having no back round in engine work these types of videos are the basically all I have to work with. If you ever do continue the series I would be great if you make a video on how to remove/install and an engine with out removing the transmission.
Did you guys see the Garage 54 video from yesterday? They made a clear oil pan and filmed the engine running. it was awesome to see how the oil runs through the engine, and what can happen if you have too little oil. The only bummer was they didn't take the car for a drive, but, who can blame them- they live in Siberia.
I rebuilt the auto tranny for my truck one time in my laundry room. Took parts to work and cleaned them and modified them on my lunch breaks. Laid a sheet of plywood across the washer and dryer and used it to assemble the tranny. Fun times, my girlfriend at the time was mortified. hahahaha.
Jay leno - i got vick edlebrock jr here with these new proto type heads that cost more than your first born.
Uncle tony- Im porting some shit 318 heads in my bathroom
Uncle tony = winning
Great. Awesome knowledge for us layman...
I just built a transmission and am currently building the engine in my kitchen. The security deposit was only $100 on my apartment...
Thank u uncle Tony and uncle Kathy
I can't believe I just found this channel. This dude is in the shower with goggles on porting heads with a harbor freight die grinder. This dude is literally the closest thing to a hero that I've found thus far in my life.
Congratulations to your wife. No doubt that she was counting every second of dust you made, thinking of the cleaning job afterwards. About the basic porting work, even Edelbrock heads require it.
I can see your promise of new kitchen flooring turning into a FULL kitchen AND bathroom remodel REAL quick!!
When I do stuff like this in my home shop, I prefer to use my variable speed rotary tool and its flex shaft for the finer work such as blending the bowls and guide bosses. The flex shaft is much easier to control and, with a good carbide burr, I can turn the speed down to reduce the risk of damaging the seat if I slip.
Why does Uncle Kathy have to "clean up a little mess" ?? You are building the engine, clean your own messes ...
That's her job. 😛
Bravo!!!! My man bravo!!
My wife's immediate comment - "don't you even f***ing think of doing that in my new bathroom"... some people just don't appreciate the necessities of life! 🤣
Dishwasher works too...
@@SweatyFatGuy Don't even go there - she found a carb bowl in there last month & nearly rammed it somewhere very painful! 😳
Get her a car then it'll be ok trust me.
I do have a fiberglass repair kit for the chips you make in that tub. I’ve done plenty of them.
Talk about surprises I once tore down a 304 and found two sleeves in the block.
It's not just the kitchen - Uncle Kathy's getting a new bathroom, too! :-D
Legend has it that Chuck Norris begged Uncle Tony to rebuild his engine.
Great video
I live ina townhouse, and well thus no garage.... lol for thew past 3-4 years ive been repairing my old Jeep wagoneers, mainly rust by grinding, cutting, and welding in the parking lot lol.. my neighbors hate me.. haha
Gotta try the cordless milwaukee die grinder, ill never go back to cold fingers and metal in my eyes with air. The battery weight helps with control, no cord to step on
You'r the man Tony
Good video and explanation.
Porting in your shower. That's gangsta.
And yes, you absolutely must remove your wedding band before starting this job.
Must have promised her a full-gut remodel when he finished.
You need to make a electrolyzing tub to clean up the rust to clean the heads and block but use a truck bed with plastic liner or somthing like that for the tub just my 2 cent it needs to be in your trailer park hot rodding play list you make me laugh when I watch your videos keep up the good work
U can also buy indoor grow tents for pretty cheap. U can get a strong 4” inline fan around 150$ and ducting all from the same online hydroponic shop. Probably looking at 300$. U can vent 100% the fumes out the window and have a inclosed space to contain the mess. And u can smoke in a nonsmoking apartment while u work. Not to mention the reflective ability of the Mylar.
Excellent 👍🖖
Uncle Cathy is a saint....!!!!!
If I did that on the bathtub.....
Instant divorce.......!!!!
Waitin on the next installment of this series
I can think of 5 landlords right now who would mess their diaper thinking what's going down their plumbing they'll have to fix one day. That said, a series like this is nice to show just how expensive it is to build cheap. How many apartment dwellers are going to know which valve has the 40 degree seat, and what year had the 45 degree seat? How many project cars will sit in the community parking lot as someone tries to diagnose the broken exhaust spring.
Its the nickel and dime stuff that grabs ya. You buy a head for cheap...but then you find out what the alternator bracket costs, and that the valve cover you got the great deal on has a different bolt pattern. That's where room to store comes in handy. But out there is someone who tossed together a ride, and they only take it two blocks to the cruise nite at Pep Boy's before the snow flies.
Loading a video cleaning up my 70s ford heads. Didn't touch the intake port or runner but cleaned up the bowl area real nice. Went all the way through the exhaust side. 🤘
This gives a new definition to “shower heads”
