I am not sure why people give your video a thumbs down. I have watched a few hundred of these and find yours are among the best. You are organized, have your materials and words ready, and don’t belabor the descriptions. There are many slow-going video where people show their entire thought process, their pets and their newly done manicures. I prefer yours. I don’t have hours in a day to watch. When searching for ideas and inspiration 15-20 min. is a good amount of time for me to accomplish that. Thank you for taking the time to post your process.
Yh same I am planning to make a junk journal and seen lots of ur ya tutorials and I love them because u show different ways on how to make them so u have options 🙂
Isn't it funny how some people view the book as destroyed, when actually mixed media artists give them a new purpose. If it is just the cover used this time, the pages get used another. I get my books to alter from charity shops. It is recycling at its best, Great tuturials, thank you
@@bearded-cat Cardboard is already made of recycled materials and is designed to decompose quickly. A hard cover book is made out of archival grade quality materials, which means it is made not to decompose. Using an old book that may never be read again will last years and years while a cardboard book will fall apart in a short period of time.
I enjoyed this tutorial! I'm a book conservator, so I do a lot of binding and repair old books - but I'm not horrified by this, just impressed by your ingenuity! A tip for everyone: you can use the back of a spoon as a 'bone-folder' for making nice crisp folds in your sections. And please, please be careful when selecting books to recycle. It's often the case that charity shops/thrift stores won't know the value of some books. I would say don't use anything older than the 1970s, just in case. Reader's Digests are PERFECT for this kind of recycling, though, because they are cheaply produced and abridged versions of stories. You'll soon find out that modern hard-covers like the one in the video aren't sewn together, but rather the pages are stuck to a strip of glue on the back like paper backs. Ironically, this is called 'perfect binding'. Anyway, thank you, this is a great introduction to bookbinding!
I know this is an old video, but I had to watch it again. I'm so tired of spending ridiculous amounts of money on journals & notebooks! This is amazing - you're awsome~!
I'm watching a bunch of journal flip throughs. You were one of the 1st channels I watched 2 years ago. I'm hooked on your particular"style"in so many of your Journals! I've learned so much from YOU. You are living your destiny for sure!
Thank you for this! And thank you so much for showing possible uses for the scrap paper left behind after cutting -- not wanting to produce waste when cutting paper to size has been my main hesitation in making junk journals using old books. Lovely ideas!
I am starting my first journal today. I have watched MANY helpful and wonderful tutorials on Journal making. However, the journal you posted here, is the one I have chosen to guide me through and keep me company while I do it. I enjoy your clear, concise example and pleasant demeanor. Thank you for sharing! I am a new subscriber, too!
Well its been about 6 months since I first came across your tutorial. After several tries I finally succeeded in completing my FIRST art journal and it turned out Fantastic, even if I do say so myself!! I used a steam punk theme and yes I recycled an old book. I learned by watching your tut and actually created a few techniques on my own which I am sure is the goal of a tutorial?? So I am off to do several more hoping to create one for each of my kids, my five grandkids, and now my two great-grandchildren. They all knew their grandfather and miss him as he has passed away. I will create a journal of his life. I want them all to know what a great and inspiring man he was. Thanks again Johanna.
Gosh at the comments about 'destroying a book', sure it's destroying them, but it's turning a book that probably would've been chucked out into something new and beautiful! I cringed the first time I watched someone destroy a book to re-use, but it's an excellent way at recycling and turning something old and unloved into something new, beautiful and loved! Loved the video, thank you! Because of you and your videos, I now have my own gardening/art journal I ADORE, I used a book I was never fond of and even used some of the original pages :)
Thank you. I cringed when she cut out the pages but like you, I know the book is just changed. Plus you can make recycled paper out of the unwanted pages or recycle for pockets or envelopes!
i cringed too... but now i think of the billions of unwanted books out there. of the billions of old books that nobody has time to read.. or won''t read because they have been reprinted in a more "desirable" cover or format... or their content isn't relevant anymore, which is even worse... plus, the pages/content can still be read if the pages are carefully removed.
Hi Johanna. Thanks so much for this video. I havent started a Journal yet but did get hubby to buy me a 8 x 8 scrapbook. I had no idea that you could recycle a old book like this. I was fascinated to watch you actually sew your pages to the cover. I do a lot of card making or well playing at card making. So my journal is going to have lots of scenes to make up my card toppers. Thanks again. Hugs xx
I Love this journal idea. The first I've seen that helps me be a little more to creative. All I've seen is they show only one way there way they do it & not giving you no alternatives to the process that helps you to create your own ideas! I LOVE LOVE LOVE the paper your using that a great idea you can get them from the dollar store or Dollar tree will save money to use on other supplies. The die cut is a very nice touch you can use the idea like the shacker cards and put a keepsake in the page! AWESOME!
Johanna Clough, I love your art and your tutorials are so helpful, I love the way you have step by step instructions. Thank you. TO all the people moaning about 'destroying' books: I volunteer at a library bookshop where we sell ex-library stock to raise money for the library. Any books we don't sell get sent back to the warehouse and then pulped. Books and papers are also pulped when you recycle them, or just binned and sent to landfill. I also volunteer at a charity shop, and we don't have enough helpers to sort recycling categories for the stuff we can't use or sell; it just gets binned and sent to landfill.
Your music choices and voice are so calming, and you attitude that anyone can do it and adapt it to fit their lives makes me feel like I can do it and actually be a fun way to express myself rather than a stressful project that I feel has to be perfect. Thank you!!
Johanna Clough I definitely will! I don't have time during school to start one, but I'm hoping that during summer I'll be able to start one and bring some supplies back to school to work on it next semester.
I absolutely love this tutorial. I am attending a eastermarathon competition and today we were going to make an art journal page. I have never done this before, so I had to find out what art journaling was before I could start. Thank you for sharing this tutorial, it made my task so much easier.
that was so sweet of you to show alternatives for people who might not have the nifty tools to cut out window and such, and then actually cut it out like you didn't have one :) It made me smile.
This is such a great insight to how to even begin. I have watched so many UA-cam ideas and yours by far have me actually excited about what I want to do.
I love using the old Readers Digest abridged book covers. They are a really good size for a journal. The covers are already pretty, and you don't have to do as much to them. I also don't feel bad taking the book apart. There are several abridged novels in them, something I would probably not read in the first place, because I like to read the complete book. I also reuse some of the pages and illustrations. I am looking at this video for about the third time to refresh my knowledge. It is a wonderful tutorial! Thanks again, Johanna!

Thank for the this video for beginners. Great starter ideas plus inspiration to get me going. Every time I've started I become over whelmed with everything that I just get frustrated and stop. This was so fun to see! I’ve seen these art journals before, but hadn’t a clue how to get started, so this is super helpful! I love your technique and accent!! 💜
Heh..Uhh thanks..This was really cool little project for myself and honestly it kept my mind off stress and stuff..Since Well...Shits Tough! Instead of an art journal I went for a positivity journal 📓 which was Filled with quotes and good memory's And Ambitions! Because of your video I was filled with joy...Thanks
Thanks so much for the lovely clear steps to create this journal. I found you just when I needed to, I have a friend who is about to set out on a long trip around Australia and I want to make a travel journal for her. Again thank you.
I discovered your channel a week or so ago and I fell in love! This may sound strange, but whenever I feel stressed I like to watch your videos because they're so relaxing and they give me inspiration for my own journals! I'm definitely going to try this!
I so enjoyed this Johanna, what a super video. I did something like this a few years ago and now you have reignited the desire to make more of these but this time along with my granddaughters. If people don't know, the Readers Digest condensed books can be picked up so cheaply at thrift stores and they have those pretty covers like yours. Thank you and God bless you ♥
Hi Johanna, thank you SO much for these videos. You have really inspired me to create where I was hesitant to create. I've made a couple of journals already using folders and thin cardboard as the covers, now to go raid the thrift shops for old readers digest books :)
You are super creative, amazingly thorough in your instruction, and wonderful to listen to!!! (very soothing voice!!!). Thank you so very much for the BEST tutorial I've ever watched! I feel so privileged! Thanks again!
What a great tutorial, really clear instruction. I love that you use an old book and I love all the cut outs and inclusions. I'm off to make my journal now. Would be lovely to see you do a page which includes collage.
This was soooo informational for a person who is thinking of doing this, but would like to start a little cheaper..Wow awesome..Thank you from many of us..
so cool! i've made a few journals in the past but i've only ever used plain card for the cover, i'd love to try making a journal using an existing book cover for that vintage journal feel! thank you for sharing and for the inspiration :D
I have also recycled, using this tutorial, my old Reader's Digest condensed story book. I'm going to recover one of the stories that I like for myself and another one for a friend of mine. The last two stories will be recycled or used in art, it's a fabulous way to repurpose an old book that wasn't doing anyone any good.
Great tutorial Johanna. Only came across our channel (thanks to UA-cam for the recommendation!). Subscribed and looking forward to going back and watch more videos. Thanks!!!
I really enjoyed this video!! You organized the steps in such a helpful manner and not to mention the editing, music, etc was beautiful and simple...loved it!! I will definitely try this for an art journal cover, thank you Johanna!
PERFECT tutorial! You demonstrated this in such an easy way to follow! Love how I can now create a "fat" journal using a larger book. Thank you so much for having shared this informative video! The end result turned out beautiful!
I work in a school library and they weed and throw out books every year because the content is too old for teaching. I've been brining a lot home, keeping the covers and using the pages for paper mâché projects.
My hero! Our puplic library threw away a book after I accidentally got tomatoe sauce on a tiny area and made me pay to replace it. I really wanted that book.... I'm glad you re-use the pages!

can just use cardboard you usually throw away? :| perhaps someone would read book, cant read cardboard
Just use an already damaged book if you can . I wish I could draw . Kudos to you for knowing , I was always thrown into Chorus ❗❗

this video is so calming.
loved this Johanna. You made it seem so easy. I'll be watching more as you are a good and encouraging teacher
I've just done my first art journal base from this tutorial. It's a great way to make your own book
what a fantastic tutorial, it showed every step perfectly - this is the best tutorial I have ever seen
Is this the kind of music you listen to when your making journals regularly? It makes it feel so tranquil and transforming.
Thanks so much. Your instruction is so clear and organized. I feel empowered to try it.
You're so talented! Thanks for inspiring me to make my own x
What a great tutorial, really clear instruction. I love that you use an old book and I love all the cut outs and inclusions. I'm off to make my journal now. Would be lovely to see you do a page which includes collage.
This was soooo informational for a person who is thinking of doing this, but would like to start a little cheaper..Wow awesome..Thank you from many of us..
this whole video was very satisfying to watch
I love seeing your process videos!
Etakaria yay :)
so cool! i've made a few journals in the past but i've only ever used plain card for the cover, i'd love to try making a journal using an existing book cover for that vintage journal feel! thank you for sharing and for the inspiration :D
I discovered your channel through Junk journal Julk, I am addicted and have been binge watching.
Thank you for making this look like an easy project . Good explanation.
Your voice is the most calming thing I’ve ever head
I have also recycled, using this tutorial, my old Reader's Digest condensed story book. I'm going to recover one of the stories that I like for myself and another one for a friend of mine. The last two stories will be recycled or used in art, it's a fabulous way to repurpose an old book that wasn't doing anyone any good.
I've just made an art journal following this video, I absolutely love it can't wait to use it😀
Great tutorial Johanna. Only came across our channel (thanks to UA-cam for the recommendation!). Subscribed and looking forward to going back and watch more videos. Thanks!!!
You're a great teacher and your books are beautiful! I started making my own journals with one of your tutorials 🎀🎀
You have such a calming voice
What a great video. Thank you for explaining and demonstrating how to make a journal. I subbed. ⚘
I really enjoyed this video!! You organized the steps in such a helpful manner and not to mention the editing, music, etc was beautiful and simple...loved it!! I will definitely try this for an art journal cover, thank you Johanna!
Amity Bloom thank you darling girl can't wait to see what you do! Xz
Easily understandable👌
Thank you for this video. Thank you for sharing how this is done. You are a good teacher.
You are a WONDERFUL teacher, Johanna! Thank you so much for this tutorial! ♥
BlueCat Blu that's wonderful!
great idea Blue CAt Blu and now with the kindle books soon they will be less, but using the pages for papier maché it is great Thank you
That is acceptable. But using a brand new book just because you think the cover is cute is totally ridiculous.
My hero! Our puplic library threw away a book after I accidentally got tomatoe sauce on a tiny area and made me pay to replace it. I really wanted that book.... I'm glad you re-use the pages!
What a great idea. Maybe you could suggest a junk journal project to some of the teachers.
I really enjoyed this video , you made it look easy and I bet it is. I will definitely try this for a memory book cover . Thank you Johanna xx
