      They put automated software in trains and eliminated crews. Now instead running 5 trains that are 20 cars long with a few crew members per train, they've now consolidate that into a single hundred car train with the same few crew members. Pure corporate greed. And they get away with it because they're exempt from state laws because they operate nationally. The railroads are never held accountable. They don't even follow their own safety protocols. My brother has been an engineer for Union Pacific for over 30 years. I've heard first hand about all the BS they get away with. When he was on the extra board he was constantly threatened to be fired for "not being available enough", when he was logging 100 hours a week on the time clock. They won't put in writing what they consider "enough", because no court in the land would uphold 100+ hour work weeks.

    Each truck has safety standards and inspections. One man runs a 4 mile train, with no backup. How can he inspect a whole train?

    • @sturmovik1274
      @sturmovik1274 15 днів тому +9

      First, train crews are at least 2 people by law.
      Second, regarding inspections:
      -Each train is inspected at the yard where it's assembled. This is trained personnel driving up and down both sides of the train at about 10 mph looking for problems.
      -Trains are also inspected in the same manner every 1000 miles
      -Any time they pass another train, they will inspect the side of that train that they can see and vice versa
      -Any time they go through a yard, even without stopping, any employee who isn't doing anything just then will casually inspect them as they pass simply by habit
      -Most mainlines have automatic wayside detectors every 10-30 miles which will detect dragging equipment, overheated bearings and the like.
      -Any time they go through a long curve with decent visibility, they'll look back and inspect the side of the train that they can see. Limited in sight, obviously, but it will catch significant problems.

There isn't a single train in the country that doesn't have at least a few cars in it without some kind of potential failure. Not all failures would be catastrophic, but why pay for preventative maintenance when we can pocket the cash and only pay a few million when the cars end up in a giant pile?

    Train fire? Derailment? Not near hwy, why close the road? Railroad safety act? How convenient. Looking to pass it, so derail another train? What, does this legislation stop propane on rails? Or perhaps sabotage? Maybe the "RR safety act" ensures investigation and prosecution? This one stinks like super fishy.

    • @sturmovik1274
      @sturmovik1274 15 днів тому +1

      This is purely uninformed speculation on my part, but... It looks like the hwy is only about 2000 feet of the track at most points, and depending on exactly what hazmat/flammables it had on board, that could be VERY close. So, they close the highway in the immediate vicinity... and then it only make sense to close it between the two nearest towns where a detour is available, to prevent any more traffic than is already there from getting stuck.
