I am 75 next month, and I have owned a Total Gym since 1975, from it's inception. This one piece of equipment has kept me functional and active. I am not able to do some of the workouts I used to do, because of age and joints but it has literally been a lifesaver! I Love Your Videos. Onward and Upward, Anne

Hi sliding bench trainer, I have commented on your other posts but I feel I need to put my 10 penny worth here, as I said in my reply last time I had a total gym for a number of years and stupidly sold it when times got hard😢but I have recently purchased another one second hand. I am a massive fan of Chuck Norris and he was my inspiration to get one in the first place as he used and promoted these for many years so just look at the shape he was in during his career as 6 times world karate champion, people only believe what they want to believe most of the time but they can’t argue with the facts, Chuck and yourself are in great shape and yes you probably supplement your training with other types of resistance training but you can definitely build a great and strong physique with the total gym alone.
Take no notice of people who shout this or you down because if you motivate anyone to do something that will give them fitness and heath then that is fantastic and as far as I can see from these comments you are truly respected by many people for your advice 👍👍👍👍

You can heal your joints, it's possible. I'm doing it currently for a spinal injury. I'm doing what all the MDs told me was not possible. But a couple DCs told me it's possible, one by adjustments and the other by meditation. So first I did the chiropractic adjustments and got some results, then i stopped improving then have been doing a chakra meditation for the last year, and I've actually improved more than from just the adjustments alone. But that's because I finally realized that healing can't take place under too much chronic stress, and since I was dealing with PTSD from Iraq deployment, I realized that I need to work more on relaxing and prayer to get any better. Many people never learn this, you first need to believe it's possible that way you will do whatever it takes. And I've done everything from PRP, steroidal anti inflammatory injections, physical therapy, exercise, stretching, massage, diet and supplements , prescriptions, week long water fasts, chiropractic and yoga.
The best part of meditation for healing is that it brings other benefits and it doesn't cost anything. But I did buy the chakra meditation from Dr Joe Dispenzas site.
Good luck brother, if I can do it you can too. Oh and I've had these injuries for the last 15 years, and 4 years ago it was so bad I was super suicidal and it destroyed my life, losing my wife it the process. But I started the meditation last year and the amount I've improved has been wonderful. Again I can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel

That's great! I have had tweaky back issues since I was 21. Fortunately they were very intermittent and not debilitating. But as I've gotten older, soreness in my back has increased. The more I use my Total Gym, and especially the core exercises, the better my back feels. Too few people understand how important core strength is to back health.

@@Nicksonianfor that twing in the lower back. It's really beneficial to strengthen your hips by putting your shoulders against the wall hands on your hips and roll your hips forward and backwards. The longer you can do it the better. Speed it up or slow it down. Just make sure during the roll forward clinch your cheeks. Doing a version of this that involves a female, really helped my lower sciatic back pain.

Same here. I had never been successful with sticking to memberships or other home exercise equipment. Got the xls and I lost 25kg with my ex losing nearly 50kg. We also rode our bikes and tried to count calories as well, but the fact that this was so easy and comfortable to use helped me stick with it. And I very quickly felt the difference as my strength grew enormously. I sadly lost my gym but have been looking for one at a good price second hand. I got one for cheap but it was the 1000 model and the pulley constantly catches my hair and makes it scary to use. What a fun and effective piece of equipment!!

Where the total gym absolutely destroys lifting heavy weights is when you're tired and or not totally motivated to work out. BUT what happens is you start working out on total gym easy, it feels good so you work harder and end up with heavy resistance. I can totally exhaust just about any muscle just as good and deep as with free weights, only it is more "fun", or more "comfortable"...it's hard to explain.

Accidentally logged in under wife’s account, but I felt compelled to comment. I am an average size man who has gone through bursts of extreme athleticism. I started back with P90X and freeweights. I was able to get to 8% body fat and look ripped with it…almost as good as you are now, but only being 5 9 inches tall and 200lbs. Well, long story short…I am prone to bursitis. So, my heavy weightlifting was interrupted at least once a year by injury. Therefore, I never was able to keep consistency for more than 6 or 7 months. I scoffed at the Total Gym too. Well, I have one sitting right here, and I swear by it now. Resistance is resistance no matter how it is achieved. The body doesn’t know the difference at all. That being said, the vast majority of scoffers would never even use the weight with freeweights that is comparable to the highest incline. So, a 160 man at the highest incline would be doing 40 lbs of resistance on each side. Most fo,ks don’t even lift that heavy anyway. As for bodybuilding, just add the extra weight via vests or the bar. It’s really simple. It’s just that folks lack knowledge, consistency, and common sense. Most people also lift too heavily for their connective tissues anyway. That was the cause of my bursitis….lifting 60lbs in each hand before my musculature and connective tissue was actually ready. I.e. overtraining. Just because you can lift something with muscles doesn’t mean your joints are ready yet.

Coming across your video for older people made me buy a Total Gym, even though I'm not elderly! I have Ehlers Danlos Syndrome (hypermobility) and have a lot of back problems which aren't fixable. Any kind of strength training killed my back and just wasn't do-able. But as I'm now in my 50s and have gone through menopause I noticed my muscles were scarily weak and I knew I had to do something about the situation. I do all the arm exercises sitting on the bench with my legs crossed, which takes the weight off my lower back. Being able to do legs squats while lying on my back, which doesn't require my back to weight bare, has been a game changer. I started out with the column on the lowest height at no.1 which has allowed me to very gradually over several months increase resistance at my own pace. I can also do the exercises slowly and mindfully, not over-extending my joints which as someone who is hypermobile I do naturally and can cause injury/tendonitis. I can't do all the exercises because of my back issues, so just concentrate on the ones I can do. Brilliant piece of equipment - thanks for the videos 🙂

Two thoughts here, Either these people have never tried it or they're behind another product. As far as just doing pushups, dips and chin ups your average person cannot do enough of most if not all of these exercises to even begin progress. With only a chin up bar and a few other other home workout pieces of equipment try doing seated rows and or cable flyes. How about shoulder presses that don't hurt your back. I could go on but we know the truth and that''s all that matters.

From the day I bought my TG, your videos stood out. I happen to be one of those "old people", 64 now, and realized I need to get back in shape. I spent my adult life as a Police Officer, on a SWAT team for 23 years and I hated the gym although I was always very active and could do my job. Now I look forward to working out, lol after all these years. Something that no one talks about, but is a great feature of this gym, is that you work on it from the start with a perfect range of motion. In the gym, you suffer form for trying to lift heavier than you should, peer pressure, or trying to impress. On this machine, you build the small muscles first and injuries are rare. Your use of bands opened it up for me, I purchased them and use them regularly. Sometimes it's slippery and I don't get good traction when using resistance bands, but I use the bar to aide. I would love to see your ideas on how to sit when using the bands, so you don't slide off. Great videos, thank you for your insight.

It’s basically a very scalable cable machine, and then some- the single most important thing about this device (yes it’s a very versatile, scalable tool that allows you do many, many exercises) is that it allows you to perform less-than-bodyweight squats and pull-ups (and dips, and probably other bodyweight moves like handstand pushups, iron cross (?), etc).
I’d recommend getting up on your toes and doing full range true hack squats on it instead of those partial squats ( on that note I know you use that vertical leg press for more half-squats; why, I don’t know.)

I think the total gym is a great piece of equipment. It’s really almost the perfect fitness device you can utilize. The variety of angles you can hit the muscles is superior to almost every other piece of gym equipment I’ve ever used.
Obviously the big limitation is you’re using body weight, but that’s also good because you’re using a weight that probably won’t injure you too much.

I bought my first total gym in 2002. It was a floor model so it didn't have all the pieces, but I got it cheap. I had a 25lb plate I sat on when I used it and it worked for me being in a small apartment. I ended up selling it and getting a better one. I then bought the 1700 club. I use free weights but I like the total gym for certain exercises like hack squats with a weighted bar. It is a very versatile machine. You can buy them used like new for very cheap.

I don't own a total gym but my workout buddy does and we sometimes do a strictly total gym workout, especially on cardio days. I am a former Army Ranger and can tell you, our extreme workouts had nothing to do with the gym and I was truly in the best shape of my life! So all the naysayers who say "no serious athlete or trainer would buy this" are tunnel visioned and limited in their creativity toward exercise. ANY form of controlled movement with any degree of resistance and repetition is GOOD and BENEFICIAL, especially for those of us in "senior" category... range of motion is king as you get older! I still push the steel and workout at gyms but concentrate on range of motion now. I appreciate what you provide and maybe someday I'll get my own TG!!

Yeah, I'm a 280lb powerlifter who's got a 700 Deadlift and I'm natural. I use the Total Gym several times a week as a supplement to my lifting. My favorite bicep exercise of any modality is Total Gym curls. And big guys, meaning 250+ like myself, dismissing the Total Gym is just tone deaf. It's very useful for bigger human beings and the resistance load is more challenging when you're heavier. I got stronger during the pandemic without access to any gym and the Total Gym might've been the biggest catalyst.

There is something just so easy about the glide board. I can easily move through exercises without much planning, thus, I always end up putting in a good workout, even when I don’t think I will. It’s just so easy to keep going...arms get tired, switched to legs...all on one machine. I have a lower back injury, so the board helps me a lot. Thanks! I first encountered Total Gym in 1998 or 1999 at my Dad's place. I was a dedicated free weight guy, but I could see it was a useful machine. Fast forward a few years--one of my colleagues at work was selling his. Turned out it was one of the ancient therapy devices, but I used it every workout. It didn't fold, was 9 feet long, had no way to add weight, but the glideboard and track were really long, which made it in some ways superior to modern offerings. I had that for about 10 years. Then my wife owned one, & when we got together I began to use it. When we moved to Arizona, I bought an older one with a longer glideboard, but I joined a gym as well, & devoted most of my energy to the gym. I recently dumped the gym & moved my workouts back home. Back to the total gym. What people don't appreciate (esp. Valuable for us older people) is that a major component of the benefits one gets is more flexibility due to the stretching in many movements. At this point I'm using only the total gym. It does work well. I still plan to rebuild my home weightlifting equipment, time & space permitting, but I could probably use only the total gym and do quite well by adding weight & resistance bands, as you have. However, I've lifted since I was 15--62 years, so the iron is sort of in my blood. Lots of good things about weights, but numerous injuries (which I've had) aren't among them. I've never had an injury on the total gym, although I've used it a lot. Thanks for your video, & recommendations.

With a change in diet and utilizing my total gym 3 to 5 times a week I dropped 70lbs and my cholesterol is now within normal levels without medication. I also use an exercise mat for some core exercises and pushups. I have muscle definition I can see my abbs. I never had this level of fitness before. I finish my exercise fold the gym up and put it under my futon and pull it out the next day or the day after and am continuing my health journey.

And yes, it definitely works to build muscles. Of course if you go to a proper gym regularly, you might not need this machine because you have access to plenty of machines, each of them dedicated to one single muscle or one muscles group, but I have been using it for 20 years and I'm sore after each training session.

As a personal trainer, I couldnt agree with you more regarding thinking "outside the box." There will always be naysayers saying this or that exercise methodology is the best way to get in shape or build more muscle. The reality is that the body needs different type of stimulus in order to continue build muscle and gain strength. In my experience the people that have the most success are the ones that are :
    1. Consistent
    2. Know their body and when to stop when they need to
    3. Try various workouts to mix things up
Weight training has it's place but its just one form of resistance training. Exercises using the Total Gym are great in that allows the body to move at certain angles that help stimulate stabilizer muscles and allows you to increase workout volume while being easier on your joints. For example rear delt flyes or any rotational movements are killer movements using the Total Gym. Thanks for sharing your insight and passion towards this training!

They are just standard loop style resistance bands. I do have promo code with Serious Steel "SBT" to save 10% off or Clench Fitness Bands "SBT15" for 15% off. Those are 41in bands, but I've also used Serious Steel 37in and 32in bands. But for sure these machines are not designed for it, so it's something to be done at your risk.

I have an off brand (Total Trainer by Bayou Fitness) that I only paid a little under $300 but it's awesome. I've had it for over 20 years. I was a personal trainer and had a studio full of stuff, but I used this machine more than anything I had and STILL using more than anything I have today. I'm 53 and still in great shape.
For anyone thinking that this machine is NOT for advanced strength training or building serious muscle; I trained a young guy who was a football player and trying to walk-on at the University of Georgia. He weighed about 250 lbs and was a defensive lineman. He came to me for specialized training and I trained this kid mainly using the TT. He ended up walking on to UGA's football team and earned a scholarship. My clients called my TT the 'torture rack'...lol. If you ever want someone to do a guest cameo or training session in any of your videos, I'm your huckleberry! I have developed lots of exercises on this machine, many I think are pretty unknown. I've never seen anyone on videos doing them. So, anyway, thank you for going to bat for the greatest piece of workout equipment ever invented! DC, in Dallas, Georgia.

I think what this piece of equipment does is take what's so great about good old fashioned basic calisthenics performed at high reps and does one of 2 things: make certain training more accessible. Like squats and pull ups, a hack squat or single Leg Hack Squat on this sliding bench is much more accessible to some than a typical Squat or a pistol squat. You can more safely take your legs to Failure with your body weight with this equipment like a improvement of the sissy squat essentially. Pull up as well, that's even more obvious how this piece of equipment makes the pull up accessible.
Now the expansion upon calisthenics. This takes your bodyweight and roughly puts you through a spectrum of regression/progression with your BW as resistance and cross applies it to virtually any cable machine type exercise, and cable supplemental variation exercises one would use instead of your typical barbell or dumbbell exercises for body parts just with your bodyweight providing the resistance instead of a cable weight stack.
This is actually quite genius. Whoever thought to take the concept of the versatility of a Cable machine but it's your own bodyweight your lifting through a sliding bench that also is a bodyweight Hack Squat sled, I mean amazing.

I don't believe the new attachments would fit those models. Thanks again for watching and the positive comments.

I’ve had one since 1999, I had to change out the 4 wheels, less then 50 dollars. I can now buy additional pieces to upgrade.

I purchased mine from QVC back during the Christmas sale they had back in 2020 and I love the machine, I'm in my early 50's and for me it's all I do need. Muscle knows resistance but it doesn't know where that resistance came from and if you do things right you can get a great workout from this machine. If you need added weight you can get add bands like we see in these videos, you can get a weight bar or use a weighted vest and you can get good resistance. For me, it's exactly what I needed, I was skeptical at first but QVC had it for a great price and I figured why not take that chance and once I got the hang of how to use it, I cannot complain...I've noticed that I am more toned and I am fine with this. A workout really is what you put into it and it doesn't matter what's used as long as you use it consistently.
When I do get the money I am actually contemplating getting the upper model, the GTS or the commercial version of it the Elevate Encompass. They are expensive but there are rehab places that use these that sell them used so that's how I would order one.

Recently found your channel and I'm a massive fan. I'm looking at purchasing one of these again as I had to sell my first one due to lack of space but I really enjoyed using it when I had it. I want to use it in conjunction with resistance bands. Is there a way of attaching resistance bands to it to increase the resistance as the model I am looking at doesn't have the bar that allows weight plates to be added.
    Thanks.

great video. speaking of rehab I'd love to see a video where you take some of kneesovertoesguy's exercises and apply to a total gym? i'm sure i'm not the only one with knees that could use some work :)

Love your reviews and training videos. Based on your reviews, which sliding bench trainer would you purchase? I am very experienced weight trainer (over 40 years) who recently switched over to resistance bands from weights. Still do some weights but now mostly resistance bands. Just need some advice on which slider to purchase. Thanks in advance!!!

The best overall pick for the $$ would be a FIT or GR8FLEX for a simple answer if it were me. A GTS is nice but those are ~4k. If you ever decide to pick up a FIT this link helps the channel out : www.anrdoezrs.net/click-100825257-15404309 or a GR8FLEX using code "GR8MIKE" gets you a special edition carbon fiber model along with free upgraded bands when both are added in the cart in checkout. Should see "free" when code is entered at GR8flex.com

Thanks a bunch! Not sure which one of the two I will purchase but may go with FIT since it will help your channel.

Total gym is not a scam, I know from experience, the only time it doesn't work for you is inconsistencies in your workout routine and not eating healthy

Man I’m glad this was not an accurate title. I’ve worked on the gym two days in a row and my body is shaking and sore. It’s been excellent for my abs so far. It’s lower impact as well which is a must due to my two lower back disc surgeries.

Bought an old xl machine after seeing the Chuck Norris infomercial one night back in 2005. It worked, there are some excercises that cant be replicated with free weights. Never injured myself on it, cant say the same with free weights

Great video! Couple questions.....I'm 6'8, and have read that if you're tall, it's a problem to use this, is that true? Also, can you do any lat exercises with this? Thanks in advance!

    • @hybridresistance
      @hybridresistance  7 місяців тому

It really depends on personal preference and your flexibility on getting into certain moves. You're on the taller side for sure. But yes, lat exercises are amazing on this. Specifically the pull ups and facedown or face up pull overs

@@hybridresistance Thank you for the reply. In your opinion, should I not let my height be a deal breaker, or should I just learn to be 'creative' with this machine?

SCAM ? I've worked out my whole life, At 62 I still use THE TOTAL GYM. I'VE OWNED 4 OF THEM, given couple to families that needed them. Always made sure I had one for myself. I recently had emergency Neck Surgery, removed disc and put in Cadaver Disc. I was back on the TOTAL GYM within two months. I made more gains on a TOTAL GYM than I ever have in any gym. Period.

Awesome story. Can't think of many types of resistance training where you can be back at with that type of injury.

What is your opinion on the 1900 model I know it’s a lower end model I don’t have a bunch of money I want to just get moving and try to build some consistency of using this piece of equipment and I have the opportunity to buy one pretty much brand new with all the attachments for $120.

I honestly think any model would work and be able to provide results. Just start when and with what you can.

Total Gym ym is no scam...in 2005, I bought the Total Gym 1500 from Academy. It worked every way it was advertised.
