Why Celebrities Don't Use a Total Gym?

  • I search the home gyms of Hollywood actors, professional athletes, and even popular fitness UA-camrs to see if they use or promote a Total Gym. There were some minor exceptions, but aside from that I also examine why I believe you don't see as many sliding bench trainers out in the wild and what will it take to make them more mainstream.

    Years ago before he was big on UA-cam, Jeff Cavalier did a video on building biceps. He showed himself doing curls on the Total gym and mentioned that it was probably the best bicep builder out there (which it is).
    I kid you not, that video had over 50% dislikes. I bet he took it down.
    I agree with you that people just never gave it a chance.

What people don't realize is as you get older you are going to have more injuries and the TG is a great Physical Therapy machine to get you back to functional life as well as strength training. Shawn Michaels has been active in wrestling for decades while many of his contemporaries are broken down now. The low impact on the joints and connective tissue on a Total Gym could have made a huge impact on his career.

    It would be interesting to know if Chuck Norris has seen your channel. Sure would like to see you talk to him one of these days. He inspired me to buy my XLS. You however have taken everything to the next level compared to videos of Chuck that i have found online. Keep up the good work! And for as long as you'll be around, i'll be watching! I'm not ever going to stop my sliding bench training. It really is a lifestyle for me & extremely important. Can't wait to get my chrome handles that i ordered, it will probably be much easier to put on & take off them Fat Gripz instead of dealing with that tight space on a strap handle.

    I've sometimes wondered if it's largely because Total Gym's product base is typically sold through QVC, the shopping channel and other channels associated with quick gimmicks, clever trinkets that it hurts their sales. I've yet to find a fitness store in Canada that sells or even sales staff who know what a total gym is other than 'that thing that chuck Norris uses that they sell to moms on the shopping channel'.
    In addition to everything that you said, I think that Total gym needs to get their sliding benches into the same outlets as Hoist, rogue etc.. by association with more traditionally associated resistance equipment it would possibly start to change perceptions that this is a serious piece of muscle building equipment. My 0.02 :)

      I've watched the Total Gym infomercial on a Canadian shopping channel for over 10 years now, but I never purchased it because I thought it was just a gimmick product only suitable for grandparents. However, during the pandemic, I came across this channel again and Mike kept emphasizing that the Total Gym is a great fitness equipment that can deliver good results if used consistently. And I did buy one and now, I do see some results, thank you, Mike.

  • @kriswempa5171

    Great video ! The Total Gym is definitely one of the most overlooked pieces of fitness equipment. I think there are a few key reasons for this. Most gyms already have at least 1 huge cable machine, which basically makes a TG redundant. Also, as you mentioned, it's a more complicated machine to use than most of the other ones seen at gyms. I could see users being confused or possibly injuring themselves if the safety pin isn't in place. Finally, the TG has been around a long time so it doesn't have the "WOW" factor of these newer, more innovative devices like the Max Pro or Tonal. People seem to be drawn to what's new and exciting, or the "shiny new nickel" as a former boss of mine used to say. The TG could certainly benefit from a "refresher" or re-branding of some sort. Your videos are certainly a huge help in spreading the word.

    • @hybridresistance
      @hybridresistance  Рік тому +1

      Great points. I've heard that the rational for the "elevate" commercial line is because a TG just had a hard time selling how to use it at a gym. People couldn't handle a multi-use machine and it was easier to sell single-use "sliding benches".

    Great points. After a few days with my cheap $250 Amazon sliding bench multi gym, what surprises me the most is the smoothness on tendons and joints. I'm extremely happy to have the possibility to train intensively again after many many years of extreme frustration caused by tendonitis. These gyms allow to "micro-adjust" the moves in the best way to release pain. And this comes intuitively, no need to think about it.
    That's pure pleasure. No pain but gains 😉

    One reason is that celebrities with the money to have a private gym may want to SHOW how much they have invested in their home gyms. Having just a Total Gym is not eye-poppingly impressive, while the fully stocked gyms such as you have shown here tell the world: I'M INVESTED IN MY BODY. In short, it's to show off.

    I got mine back in Dec 2020 during covid and bought it from QVC where you get it for roughly half price plus a good amount of accessories too and IMO it was the best purchase I made. Hello Mike, Jose from Puerto Rico and I have been a subscriber to your channel for some time now. I think this is my first comment here after watching your videos. I'm 66, and I had purchased a Total Gym when Sears was still available here. It's one of the more economical models, but it still features the same concept you've been mentioning on all your videos. After watching your videos, I've gotten back to using it because honestly, I had neglected my workouts. I've done some modifications on mine to do more leg work with workout bands. I wish the old pro models still existed. They were a simple design that had hooks at different levels and all you had to do was just move it up by hand to the level you wanted, and they had a heavy-duty bench. I never saw them again, since the design has changed a lot. Anyhow, I'm glad I found this channel and your passion is second to none. Excellent work and videos!

They were a simple design that had hooks at different levels and all you had to do was just move it up by hand to the level you wanted, and they had a heavy-duty bench." I had one of those for over 20 years. (I had slacked off regular use of it in the past few years, I must admit.) I bought it in 1999 and it was GREAT! I moved across states in late 2021 and we weren't sure about space, so I didn't bring it with me. After a year or two of missing having a Total Gym, I recently bought the Total Gym Fit Utimate on QVC. It came with several great attachments. It is a wonderful machine, and the use experience is pretty much the same as my old TG, but...I do miss that older, heavier one with hooks and I would probably swap the FIT for it if I could. But, that's just because I was fond it it, this is no criticism of the Fit. Honestly, with the TG Fit, I am already seeing some of my old physique starting to come back as I've been working on it these past few weeks. I'm looking forward to further progression in the next few months and years I plan to be working with my new TG. (BTW, if the "1956" in your name refers to your birth year, mine is 1955.)

    Great info!! I’ve always wondered about this …. But I think the way it is marketed doesn’t really show how much it can do especially adding weight plates … they just show a couple plates very light (so they think it’s not enough load for them )
    I think if more men and women realize the progressive overload you can get with added weights to this single machine that does everything they would sell even more ..famous or not famous people
    I didn’t realize it myself til all my experimenting but most people wouldn’t even look that far into it unless someone shows them

    The infomercial has unfortunately emphasized that the TG can be a quick 10-15 minute workout. Maybe giving ppl the wrong idea. Of course, it can and that's the place to start. I have my Gr8flex set up with bands for the equivalent of 250-300 lbs of resistance for a single leg press. Why drive to a gym? I had a Soloflex back in the dark ages and the TG is vastly superior. The variety of exercises with various attachments is practically infinite. I have a 500 song playlist of my personal favorite songs and thats how I get motivated. I started at age 58. Now I no longer need to take pain medication. Why did I wait so long?

    As others have said I believe a lot of it has to do with an image they want to promote. Seeing the celebrities and fitness influencers, some of them quite large, they want/need to give off the image of the hard work, time and expense they have to sacrifice to get the way they look. Lifting heavy weights or using a big machine looks more impressive. The image of them using a TG bought off QVC just wouldn't fit with that image.
    After watching your video I noticed you only featured male celebrities. The commercials and videos that TG puts out feature a lot of women using the TG to get healthier, stronger, but slender. I believe a lot of the male celebrities and men in general think of it being fine for women to use but not something men would get much benefit from.

    • @hybridresistance
      @hybridresistance  Рік тому +2

      Compound movements are great no question, but I don't think you need them in terms of building muscle, no. But I guess it depends on what you mean by compound. All an individual muscle needs is stress to that specific muscle. There are plenty of multijoint exercises you can do (rows, presses, squats, lunges etc). It just lacks on loading some of the classical compound exercises such as squats / deadlifts. But other wise there are plenty of ways to lead up the muscles / joints on this machine.

    The really strange thing is why they would not at least have one as a backup for when they are injured or get older or whatever. At the very least, even if you don't want to use it as your primary strength tool, its great to use when something happens and you can no longer do the types of training you once did. And considering how often celebrities and athletes get hurt, you would think they would have invested in the exact equipment all of them will be using during their physical therapy while they recover. You have bad knees or back and cant do squats or deadlifts, or are afraid to put that pressure on your body, why wouldn't you have a piece of equipment that allows you to safely exercise those muscles at reduced loads. I haven't even had mine for long but I can already see dozens of ways this will allow me to keep fit no matter what happens in my life.

    You're in better shape than most celebrities your age or younger. Don't forget the other celebrity really uses the total gym that advertises it is Christy Brinkley. 👍👍

    The only person I can think of was Bob Wall from enter the dragon said in an interview that he uses a total gym, but he was chuck norris student and friend so not surprising! Also celebrity trainer Gunnar Peterson has one but he literally has everything you can think of!

    I can't imagine travelling with my Total Gym. I love to use it at home, but on the road it's body weight exercises or elastic bands. The TG is too big and clunky to pack and take with me.

    ABOUT 15 YEARS AGO AS THE CELL PHONES & WEIRDOES STARTED INFESTING THE LOCAL GYMS I ABANDONED THEM COMPLETELY -- BOUGHT A TOTAL GYM XLS STYLE & HAVE NOT MISSED ANYTHING AT ALL SINCE -- COUPLE OF SETS OF DUMBELLS & BANDS & THAT IS ABOUT IT -- IS IT THE SAME ? NOPE - IS IT ALL ANY NORMAL PERSON REALISTICALLY NEEDS -- BEYOND A DOUBT

    For the celbreties its simply bc they can afford a full gym built at their homes, for nirmal people a TG and some adjustable dumbells and bands and kettle bells is a fantastic way to workout at home and save going to the gym for the heavy stuff so youre making the most of that workout at the gym and not staying there all day

    Total Gym doesn't look like traditional gym equipment. It's not "bad ass" looking. My brother had one before me and I quietly scoffed at it. During Covid my gym closed and out of desperation I started using his Total Gym. As I continued using it and checking out channels like yours, I came to realize that this is the most efficient and versatile piece of equipment for muscle hypertrophy that I had ever used. I got myself a Total Gym Fit. The only other piece of equipment I use is a barbell for Romanian Deadlifts and I've never gone back to a commercial gym.

    Seems the bot erased my comment.
    I was saying this machine can be found in your surrounding area for as low as $50. People just don't seem to use this product efficiently.
    That said, I use resistance bands and love them, but for sure will pick this machine in the future.
    Edit: I've seen the XL version going for about $150 and still looking brand new. The lower tier model for $50.

    Celebrities have enough influence to get sales moving just with a simple shout out, so that's probably why they won't speak up on it unless you grease their palms. Problem is, does this company have enough money to risk investing a lot into a big name investment?
    They'll probably have to change their marketing down the line. Christie Brinkley and Chuck Norris have done a great job hyping up the machine over the last few decades, but younger audiences either don't know them that well or can't relate to their age group. Also the "As Seen on TV" model doesn't work as well now, since younger people don't watch as much TV as last generation.

      To sum it up, it’s all about money. Companies pay celebs to promote that if you want to look like the Rock and Schwarzenegger then you have to go to the gym.

    They want to show off lots of equipment with total gym they can not do that. Its cooler to have a big gym then one total gym in it. I think that is the big reason more then anything plus you can not show like weight plates how much your doing to post online. Its a ego thing.

    It’s about money. If you want to look like the Rock then you have to go to a gym.
    If you use the Total Gym then you won’t become ripped.
    I have seen these videos here on UA-cam and I’ll admit that at first they caused me not to try the TG. When I had purchased mine, it stayed in the other room not being used for a good while. When the lockdown occurred, I started using it. It didn’t take long for people to point out that I wasn’t only losing weight, but building muscle as well. I’ve been able to build strength in my feet arches.

    Slow down talking (a mile a minute) that might help your sales pitch - Honestly, Chuck Norris was a turn off and the machine looked cheap with the wack infomercials - I read your short bio re your experience in the health fitness space and it seems your physique likely was more enhanced by free weights rather than a Total Gym only body and it’s kinda misleading - Sorry for quasi negative view, but I appreciate seeing you train a newbie on the Total Gym and that be the proof of it’s effectiveness - In short, it’s not believable your physique is strictly Total Gym made - Thanks for videos

      Sorry brother, sometimes I know I can talk fast or get passionate during videos. Sometimes I 'm just trying to keep up with a pre-laid out video clip as well. I just made a "q and a" video that might help address the "built my body by free weights". I'd briefly say, I wouldn't disagree with that in that, throughout the years I went through all sorts of different types / styles of training, but I generally would always include "bodybuilding type" of reps, sets for some of the muscles. That's really what I started doing on the TG to get more out of it (see this video ua-cam.com/video/JRGUm7sD04I/v-deo.html).

      @rdb9321 said, "Honestly, Chuck Norris was a turn off...." Why? When I decided to buy my first Total Gym back in 1999, (not the infomercial model, but one of their heavy-duty models of that time), it was Chuck Norris' endorsement that convinced me to trust in the efficacy of the Total Gym. I know celebrities often endorse products they may not even use just for the money they're paid, but Chuck Norris struck me then and now as a man of integrity. I did not believe he would say he had used the Total Gym for 20 years, (he was saying in the late 1990s infomercials) if he had not really been using it for those 20 years. I think the Total Gym is the hidden gem of affordable home exercise equipment: it is effective, offering multiple ways of working out for different purposes, with a dozens of exercises that can be done and for every part of one's body, (and it lends itself to people making up their own exercise variations). BONUS: it is space efficient! Also, compared with using free weights, it is very safe. It would be difficult ( but not impossible) to injure oneself using the Total Gym while it is very easy to injure oneself using free weights.

    These guys are millionaires,if i was a millionaire i wouldnt buy a total gym,i would have my own personal gym with every equipment imaginable,total gyms are for people with a low budget and very little space,also celebrities would not go to qny membership gym because they would be sworn by people asking for autographs and sefies,and paparazzi.

    • @hybridresistance
      @hybridresistance  Рік тому +2

      I hear what you’re saying but if these celebrities have fully furnished gyms with basic stuff like resistance bands and kettle bells they’re missing out on this key piece of equipment. As I mentioned in another comment, even if I was in the best gym in the world, and there was a total gym, I’d still be hopping on that thing for many if not most exercises.

      Nah brother. Pound for pound (versatility, space, and how it feels) it's better (IMO) than most functional trainers. Takes a little more skill to use fully than a Functional trainer. I'd love to get a freemotion dual cable, but those are 9k. Actually made a video on this though ua-cam.com/video/TJYHVV68kw4/v-deo.html&ab_channel=SlidingBenchTrainer
