One thing that hurt the Total Gym is the whole perception of the "infomercial exercise equipment". Even though it has always been a legitimate device and has even improved a lot since it first came out, a lot of people just kind of categorize it with all those other silly items like the "Thigh Master". Even I used to laugh at them whenever I'd see one at somebody's house. Also, like you mentioned, it fits a very specific requirement. It's for people who don't have a lot of space, but want to do a decent option to workout at home. There's no easy place in my house where I could set up something like a squat rack. At home, I work out in a very small den next to our garage. So, each time I workout, I pull the TG out of the garage, along with any other supplemental pieces of equipment I use with it. After I'm done, I close it up, put in back in the garage against a wall and put the other pieces of equipment away. Obviously, I'd rather have a dedicated workout room, but I'd rather do what I do than NOT workout.

Almost 20 years ago QVC was selling the Total Gym Platinum Model. It was on sale on New Years Day and I figured I'd get one for use when I was older. It sayed it the garage for approximately 15 years. During quarantine i dusted it off put it together and tried a workout with it. I found it really shined when it came to upper back training. Since then I had a friend weld a standard weight bar to it so that I couldd add extra resistance. Now 4 years later I use it exclusively for cable rows/rear delt work. I've loaded up as much as 120lbs on the bar my friend welded on it plus my body weight which is approximately 160lbs and this piece of equipment has not failed me yet. I use a variety of other equipment including dumbbells, resistance bands and the trx system but at least twice a week I utilize my modified Total Gym Platinum for upper back and rear delt work. For being a less expensive model, the total gym platinum has proved to still be durable and reliable.

I have an older GTS that I bought seven years ago from a club on Ebay. I have Ironmaster adjustable dumbells, dumbell spotters with both an Ironmaster Superbench and lat pulldown with a small bench and a low pulley. I have a Bells of Steel weight stack with adjustable dual pulleys. I have a heavy bag, a battle rope and a Rogue Echo ( torture) bike. I use the Total gym primarily for legs. I stack weights on it and use it as a squat rack. I recently had a hip replacement, so I need to use a little caution with my legs, but it really gives a pretty decent leg workout safely. I also use it on cardio days as a circuit piece by doing a bunch of high rep leg and arm exercises along with bag work, the battle rope and the bike from Hell. Finally, I think it's great for supersets of all kinds in resistance training. I like it and use it a fair amount. I just wish there was a way to retro fit the newer adjustable glideboard on my older GTS Ithink I'd use it a lot more for armrs if it had that

Since discovering your channel I have been trying many of your "discoveries": the Total Gym, Band Board Bar, and now moving on to hex bar harness squats/deadlifts. I was coming from a standard squat rack, barbell, bumper plates and a pulley tower doing basic strength training maybe 1-2 days per week. I'm male age 64. Squats were getting a bit risky/scary once I got to 275 lbs. Went completely to the band board bar for 4 months and although I liked it, it was harder to measure weight progression, the band tension sometimes didn't feel right, and getting into the squat was very awkward and a bit risky. Moving on to total gym, I found it great as a functional/mobility trainer more so than a strength trainer and I found the lower body "squat" not satisfying. Even though I set up my barbell for deadlifts in another room of the house, real world for me is that I didn't make the effort. I'm sure that I have gone way backwards in my strength in the past 6-9 months of experimenting. I am between a couch potato and a gym rat. I like to work out but it needs to be in my face (my daily office in this case), easy to set up, and provide feedback. Not wanting the squat rack back in my office, I hope that the hex bar squat/deadlift for lower body and band board bar plus tower (for face pulls and pull downs) will do me well. Although I am hopeful that I will be able to still use the total gym for my daily warmups (flys and pullovers are great), it is in the other room folded up and leaning against the wall (in my wife's office who is not yet aware) ... so far away.

it's only easier on the joints because you aren't lifting as heavy. If you did traditional weights with the same amount of resistence (weight) as you do on the total gym, there would be no difference on the joints. I always laugh when people say it's easier on the joints.

I think the people who tend to gravitate towards total gym or resistance bands or suspension training are people that reside in small apartments and condos such as myself where large machines and squat racks would be an inconvenience and possibly even cause damage to the apartment. People with bigger homes and/or garages or basements can certainly find space for a larger multi station machine and if they can afford it will probably prefer that. Of course there are always gym memberships but I've never been a fan. A local Planet Fitness a few weeks back had a free day to entice new clients to join and I went out of curiosity. Pretty much stood around waiting for whatever machine I wanted to use to free up. Not a productive workout. My total gym at home is ready when I want it available.

You hit the nail on the head directly, it would be hard to say it any better without a lot more time ,

    Total Gym
that you could never get with free weights and you can develop mass quickly with free weights,
but at some point mass doesn't become so important and stretching the joints will always be and with the Total Gym you can stretch and maintain your strength all at the same time.

Love the follow up on this as I can understand why Total Gym held back from sending Coop one of their models to review. Coop’s channel is geared toward lifters and not for those who want to workout using body weight equipment and avoid potential joint injury. What he could do if he was to review a Total Gym, is get a small frame model and feature it as a DROP SET accessory to incorporate with a barbell and dumbbell strength training program. For instance a lifter can do 3 sets of barbell rows and the 4th set (DROP SET) can be done with the Total Gym 0:13 on a low incline setting using your body weight for resistance. The next range of exercise that would go well as a drop set accessory would be shoulder raises, bicep curls, tricep extensions and many more exercises to justify the purchase of a Total Gym. With that said a small frame model, if reviewed would make sense considering the fact that all bodybuilding movements can be done on both units without incurring the high cost for the large frame models.
Just my thoughts as that is how I use my ProFrom Ultimate Bodywork with my Barbell and dumbbell training.

Mike, could I get your 2 cents given your experience with Total Gym. I've got the RS Encompass and the strength accessory package, I bought the the REP PR-5000 rack and plan on getting articulating jammer arms. Would the REP Ares 2.0 cable attachment be overkill and overlap given my Encompass or could you make a case for the two to co-exist?

    • @hybridresistance
      @hybridresistance  Місяць тому

I'm looking at doing a review on some jammer arms if you potentially want to look forward to that. But with the rep ares attachment, I think you may find your total gym may collect dust and or just be used for specific stand alone workouts. However if you can leave them both out, you'll likely get more use out of the TG that way. It really depends on what you plan on using your FT for. I personally haven't been inclined to get one because I already have multiple things (QTrainer / Gym Monster) that take the place on what I'd use a FT for.

Appreciate your input on the RS Encompass/REP rack + Ares 2.0 FT. I agree there would be a lot of overlap from a cable exercise perspective. With the strength package on my TG I can load a lot of weight on it so I also like it for leg work. TBH I'm now wondering if I'd be better off without the Ares (doesn't ship until late Aug) and just going with dedicated jammer arms on the rack which then wouldn't interfere with cable pulleys.

I ended up moving to free weights and machines and sometimes use the Total Gym. But it's just not heavy enough for some exercises. You have to do a lot of high rep sets to make up for the lighter weight, and I think that might be a downside for people who are more into the garage gym culture.

It's about time Coop hopped on one. There is definitely a lingering stigma with the Total Gym, and he knows it. Serious lifters see it as a TV gimmick or for old people, and the only thing that will change that are channels like yours, Skyler's and Stevie's, where people can see big and/or cut dudes using them. It's funny, when I recommend my GTS to friends, I still have a little twinge of embarrassment, because I know all they are picturing is Chuck and Christie doing pilates moves on it...

Look at all those boxes! Are you building a CLUB HOUSE?🤣 I purchased a used Gr8Flex, and I got my hands on a used Total Gym EnCompass. It doesn't have a strength package Attachments, but the deal I got is crazy.

Even with its few draw backs the T.G. could IMO do more for all around muscular fitness in a very safe manner than most others. Either way a another homerun Mike in connecting with so many fitness gurus.

I have a Total Gym. It is o.k. for a light workout. The good thing about it is that I don't get muscle soreness after I use it. IMO, it is better to develop muscular endurance than muscular strength because muscular strength is best developed by lifting as much weight as you possibly can for 1 to 5 reps and muscular strength is best developed by 15 to 25 reps with sub-maximal weight. On the Total Gym, I can easily do reps as many as 50 without getting Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness. The Total Gym is also easier on the joints.

I hear you, that's a valid point I've heard many times. While you can load up heavy weight on some exercises, it gets cumbersome and makes more sense to use another device.

I saw a comment on here that there is not a lot of content out there for the TG. There are channels one in particular that has over 100 Total Gym workouts. Total Gym has 2 youtube channels and a blog with dozens of free workouts. They have more content online then any other machine like theirs. I believe and will continue to believe in this machine. Total Gym has been around for 50 years. If it didnt work it would not be around for so long

This is called a TrakHandle. I reviewed it awhile back here, but honestly don't like it that much on the Total Gym, b/c it can pinch the skin ua-cam.com/video/skNRtl7dnSs/v-deo.html
