Robert K Carabiners are not designed to detach easily. There is a potential problem when backclipped where during a fall the rope can unclip. This is not a design issue, it's an improper use issue. Just as if you select reverse in your car instead of drive. You can't always prevent people from fucking things up. The rubber piece is strictly optional to make the bottom carabiner stiffer for faster clipping. Most people do not use the stiffeners. People who do not climb should really just STFU, you simply have no clue.
MotoAtheist First of all, how would a non climber ever get a "clue" without asking a fucking question. Second. If you are so put off with people who do not climb not shutting the fuck up then why the fuck would you bother to entertain the question you apparently don't want asked? No matter how good you are, skipping the instruction about the necessity to examine your climbing gear and all the related safety aspects of climbing will almost always end in tragedy. It is an extremely dangerous sport when done by responsible adults and when "responsible" and "adult" are left on the talus, bad things are bound to happen.

Informative and respectful video. You obviously care about the sport and the safety of those participating in it. Those downvoting are simpletons. If this were a video about how to avoid giving little Timmy multiple concussions at football you can bet your ass it would have positive reviews! It boggles my mind how this would ever happen. Check your gear visually. Use use ut and purposely hang in there at low hight, before you use ut to hang your life and health to it. Once I had new quick draws, realising they wouldn't snap shut properly. Never used them again, later the manufacturer called them back.
The rubber is there to make it easier to clip in, it's hard to clip a crab that won't sit still. My draws are different to the ones shown, the webbing goes around the outside of the rubber, so it's impossible to clip it into the rubber without clipping the sling as well. Maybe this is something manufacturers should look at.
Sounds like there should be a design change, because he is not the first one to do this. If nothing more make stronger so it can support the weight. I have a limited understanding of climbing from the military, you guys know much more.
Tgreenmi2 This piece has nothing to do with support and doesn't require a design change at all. It's simply a cover piece to stiffen up the quickdraw. It couldn't be more simple to use and setup. It's obvious the kid was distracted. This was some kind of camp for kids, so you can bet he was fielding questions and completely distracted by all the other kids while getting ready and screwed up the setup. It's completely insane how this could even happen because it's so simple to setup. There is no other explanation other than completely distracted.
I started climbing back when I was 17 and my instructor had us check, double check, and triple check our gear. Then we would triple check the persons next us........ I had the finest climbing equipment money could buy. New rope every season...... Always speak up if anything did not look quite. I trusted everyone on my team and I was not going to die because an equipment failure !!!! Yosemite and the High Sierras were my playground, we shared meals, clothing and strategies.
No rope for me anymore.... because I'm now just a hiker, staying on the dirt trails...... But now the danger comes from bears, mountain lions, snakes, etc......
This kid climbed 8b sport routes, are you saying that doing this regularly without rope is a good idea? Climbing mountains and sport climbing aren't the same thing at all.
Le Roy Im not saying that sport cimbing isnt a useful skill for climbing mountains, but surely most mountains dont require the ability to do sport climbs at grades of 8a+ even though it may be very helpful. 8b sport routes are hard however good you are and only the best of the best should even really consider free soloing them.
I can't imagine a situation where this could happen. Every one? Did his parents/partner let him disassemble and reassemble his own gear without teaching him how it works? This is insane!
read the details before commenting. it was someone else's gear and they didnt know how to asemble them. also, 99% of all draws dont require assembly, so that person considered themselves 'advanced' in deciding to do so. (hopefully they were put on trial too.)
Anytime my buddies and I went climbing, we would all check each other's gear, like proofreading in a way. Secondly, any skilled climber should have seen those quick draws weren't properly setup right. The instructors didn't follow the law of needed redundancies and got complacent. One wrong action/non-action in that world and you're dead or just severely hurt if you're lucky.
Sad accident. But the other issue I see, there's way too much chalk being used now days. You could not carry any chalk and still see the hand hold spots marked by other climbers. You can even stand at the floot of some climbing areas, like Yosemite, and see white spots all the way up some big wall climbs. It's time that use of chalk is seriously curtailed or ended. Not long ago, I went to J-Tree and with the help of three other climbers, we cleaned chalk off at least a dozen popular routes. It's a mess in some laces.
If you are not a rock climber please do not comment how his equipment was faulty and climbing is dangerous...His equipment was not set up properly. Like driving without breaks that work... And...driving daily with your kids in the car is a FAR more dangerous thing to do than rock climbing with gear that is regularly inspected. I am very sorry for the loss of Tito.
***** OKAY Christopher! Thanks for that! I jave climbed for 20 years. Zero accidents. I have driven a car for 25 years and almost died due to another driver ignoring a red light and causing a major collision. Just yesterday I had to slam on my brakes, swerve around a car, and avoid a pedestrian all staring at their cell phones... OKAY Christopher. Maybe hopping online and telling people they are not smart is not smart. I am not saying accidents don't happen in the climbing world. Obviously they do and its tragic. However just take a look at death total percentages and you will see that driving is a far more dangerous activity. People tell me its dangerous when I go out surfing because of sharks...Not as dangerous as driving among the human sharks to get to the coast. Ignore all this because I am not smart right CHRISTOPHER...another gifted human I suppose
+samuel rogers What is the idea of a rubber band holding the quick draw? I am surprised to see this device in this manner asking for someone to forget to set it up properly and have a fatal accident. I do not see why this is sold like this. Can you please explain?
+Achisachis73 I'm guessing some untrained amateur set it up. That's not to say it was their fault. The fault is with the sport not having proper health and safety procedures in place.
Very sad to read some of the comments. Someone lost their life, but he was doing what he loved. That by no means justifies his death, but anyone can die at any moment doing anything. I am sorry that this young man died, but his death is not "for nothing" as his death will be a lesson for others. Isn't that how safety features are invented? From the death of others? Now they know how he died and they can prevent anyone else from dying this same way. His death was tragic, but it will have prevented many other deaths. Rest in Peace little rock climber, and may the sun forever shine on your face at the top of the world.
I don’t understand how an experienced climber fails to notice this or even does it to begin with. It’s like not threading your rope through your harness and having no idea.
The manufacturers could punch holes in those thick anti-slip rubber bands to make them appear extra flimsy and stretch it to twice the width so it doesn't appear to hold any weight, as well as devise a way to force the user to loop the strap through the carabiner. The current design is flawed since two people have died using it.
Thank you for this information. It is criminal to not have these correctly assembled. Obviously equipment should be checked before being sold, before climbing, and adults should be acting as adults by performing checks. This habit should be taught before every climb, CHECK ALL EQUIPMENT. EVERY TIME CHECK ALL EQUIPMENT, EVERY TIME, EVERY CLIMB. Disappointingly we cannot trust the people assigned to act as adults and perform as adults. It has been seven years, this climber, Tito would have been working on his craft. Instead, life cut short because the adults just failed to protect and teach. It just deeply upsets me. And, I hope we all look to and protect all children.
ya and who would think to check. they probably assumed underthe rubber the carribeaner was thru the nylon strap.. i dont think its the instructors fault.. tito was smart enough to climb so he was smart enough to check his own gear too. but hard one
Sad!! Thank you for making this video though, at least others can become aware of the dangers in not double and triple checking their equipment and in not learning how to use it properly...
I bought a five-pack of clearance climbing carabiners. I'm not climbing, I'm just tired of the DO NOT CLIMB garbage that can't hold my gear on my bike.
I' met at a clerk lady who owned her shop in Kathmandu Nepal and she owned all of the metal plates that were patterns for the big brands. I bought some cheap tow bags but of excellent quality, from her. She asked if I wanted a professional logo on them. I now own 3 fine bags with the stitched on logos of " NORTH FACE"
I had my cheapo jacket stitched with another famous label. She showed me the patterns and said she could do any of them on virtually anything. It gave me some appreciation oh big name clothing.,,,,,,,,,,,,,, Marnot ?
A most terrible loss for the climbing community. It's unbelievable how basic forms of security like this are sometimes forgotten even at Tito's level of climbing. May Tito rest in peace.
I see from many the comments here that this tragedy came about because the childs gear was apparently not checked by other people? I would ask, if the boy was an experienced climber....he'd been climbing for around 4 years it appears.....why didn't he completely check his gear himself? And don't say at 12 he was too young....he was climbing for 4 years, must have realised that it could be dangerous and you would assume that he had been taught to check his own climbing gear. To be sure it is a tragedy, buy I think people shouldn't be trying to blame everyone else except the boy.
@@harrymills2770 no it isn't. Any responsible instructor is going to make a meticulous examination of the equipment. Criminal negligence not to do that.

Crazy......so sad......but i just saw a crash video of a hang-glider whose gear did the SAME thing.....the main support rope gave way due to the SAME kind of mis-threading of the ends.....LUCKILY, he was able to grab on and hold just as the harness gave way, and had a bit of a crash on a beach, but nothing broken......
It wasn't designed like that. It went out the door assembled incorrectly. A mere glance at the quick draw should have raised the kid's eyebrows and everybody's standing near him.
So wait, why are the Carabiners sold laced through the rubber stopper if it can't even carry the weight of a small kid? What the hell? Am I missing something?
In a normal quickdraw, the carabineersrs are connected by a nylon piece. Many of the draws I have seen come with a rubber bit that attaches to both the nylon piece and one carabineer (these keep the carabineer on the rope side from moving when attempting to clip). The rubber bit should not be supporting any weight. In this case, the quickdraw was assembled wrong where the nylon was not connected to the rope side carabineer. The rubber bit connected the two making it appear similar to a safe, standard draw. The gear was put together incorrectly causing this rare and unfortunate accident. The gear should have been double checked before use.
Carabiners are sturdy little machines, but this rubber band debacle needs to get remedied before another kid falls. Obviously the bands seem weight-bearing to some users.
I get vertigo standing at the BASE of the cliff looking UP! I've gotten myself stuck (can't go up, can't go down) just bushwacking as a kid. I didn't know I was in a situation until I couldn't go up and going back down was out of the question. I can't imagine rock climbing for recreation. I'd have to be pursued by certain death
I don’t understand how was it possible that the quickdraws were assembled like that… what was the brand of them ? How is it possible ? I don’t understand

+CVR IV : Definitely user error. The user didn't properly put the top biner through the nylon sling. I believe the manufacturer was held responsible for not providing safety instructions, but the parts would have worked if they were used correctly.

I agree there was the case of parents who wanted their thirteen year old daughter to sail the globe for the record books, but the law was there to protect this minor. last week a fourteen year old lost both legs in a f4 car crash no one said anything but how quickly it would be before he got back behind the wheel
If he was such a good climber then how come his entire rope was all fucked up? How do you get to that level without knowing how to tie your lines properly?????
+David Hoggan Why would a child be the first to embark across the wall? 2 of the instructors are facing manslaughter charges. They'd have surely noticed had they been the one to have been the first to go. There is no excuse for this. This is reckless negligence.
Why? This reminds me of the recent Lear Jet slamming into the ground, because it was using something to bypass the safety rule with a workaround. The safety is often annoying but anything that is used to make it easier to go around the annoying safety is asking for this to happen. Get rid of the elastic quick draw. The slow draw is slow for a reason.
I can't understand why someone would put a piece of rubber on their carabiner it makes no sense whatsoever why even use the carabiner I thought they were there to catch you in case you fall if you have a rubber on it it's obviously not going to catch you
Agree , that does not make sense , guess it thins out the gene pool What a foolish mistake , where was the parent supervision , make sure your kid is doing it safely
your carabiner is suppose to thread through both the rubber and the piece of nylon draw. The rubber is just put on there to prevent the carabiner from flopping around when clipping. Crazy shit can happen, even to the most experienced climbers...generally happens WITH the experienced climbers because they get way too comfortable and stop checking their gear and each other. Poor kid.
the rubber is to make the carabiner stick off the end of the rope stiffly so one hand atachment easy. its suppose to supplement the rope not be a fastner
it was a misuse of the gear. the draw was supposed to be on the carabiner directly than the piece of rubber over it to prevent the carabiner from swaying back and fourth making it easier to clip.
Cant climb slowly or safely enough! I will always take bailing on a route and going home alive over getting on a magazine cover or getting a new sponsor.... i will always read instructions and warnings on new climbing gear and power tools and anything else that is clearly life threatening and will not risk my life until gear has been learned and checked.... every single time
It's the climbers responsibility to check your gear. The video didn't say it was manufacturing issue, but rather how the gear was set up. Regardless of if you're 12 year old with 4+ years experience or seasoned climber, your gear is your life line. Day one you learn how to check your gear. +schlooonginator Exactly my thought, get rid of the rubber piece altogether. What's the point of clipping in if its designed to detach so easily?
At one time you also were not a climber and did not know this, so quit being a pompous ass and hypocrite.
schlooonginator Asking questions is one thing, giving some dumbass opinion based on ignorance about the subject is entirely different.
A life has been lost and life is precious.
thanks for sharing this video - it is so important to analyze mistakes, that lead to climbing accidents!
Why would any climbing device ever be tied that way?
Yeah, sue the manufacturer
Well the people who assemble it are some poor minimum wage people that don’t have a clue what their even doing it
No matter how good you are, skipping the instruction about the necessity to examine your climbing gear and all the related safety aspects of climbing will almost always end in tragedy. It is an extremely dangerous sport when done by responsible adults and when "responsible" and "adult" are left on the talus, bad things are bound to happen.
Poor tito. RIP
Oh my god! I had no idea Tito was only 12. My thoughts are with his family. RIP.
Oh man this is sad news, rest in peace little man :(
That sucks man. Much love to the family.

that nearly happend to me wen i was 14 (im now 18) and i knew how to keep all my gear in cheak but tbh it still happen even to the best of us poor kid he was only doing wat he loved at least he died died doing it and not hit by a car or somthing like that
Thank you for posting this. Important information!
you'd think that the designers and manufacturers of such equipment would design the sling to be visibly fail safe. Cant be that hard to do.
I remember when I bought those quickdraws shown in the first clip and watching that video when I was 16 and starting out sport climbing, always kept my eye out for such an issue as a result of that.
Informative and respectful video. You obviously care about the sport and the safety of those participating in it.
Those downvoting are simpletons. If this were a video about how to avoid giving little Timmy multiple concussions at football you can bet your ass it would have positive reviews! Nevermind that it's far more likely to happen, even with properly used equipment.
@@rabidcougar6465 you're either dumb or illiterate. This could have happened to any adult. It was an equipment malfunction. As I said, thought I doubt you'll read it this time either, football deaths and injuries are far more common EVEN WHEN EQUIPMENT IS USED PROPERLY.

What a terrible thing to happen to a kid with so much potential. Check your fucking gear people.
Rest in Peace Tito
Sorry to hear about this.
It boggles my mind how this would ever happen. Check your gear visually. Use use ut and purposely hang in there at low hight, before you use ut to hang your life and health to it. Once I had new quick draws, realising they wouldn't snap shut properly. Never used them again, later the manufacturer called them back.
good job parents and/or guides, for checking the gear...
If the rubber doesn't hold then what is it's use of covering the rope so you can see that it's hooked in right?
What a shame. A very hard loss. Sad for his family.
"An epic loss of life...
....and don't forget to watch my other epic videos on epic safety precautions"
today on epic tv, we got some epic news, a 12 year old boy has died
Mountain Hardware presents: a dead child
What disposable said… maybe think before you speak
great, this is what should be done, whenever someone dies unwillingly, try to create awareness and stop future deaths.
thanks for doing so.
There are some granite faces in Yosemite that rope is considered my lifeline.
No rope for me anymore.... because I'm now just a hiker, staying on the dirt trails...... But now the danger comes from bears, mountain lions, snakes, etc......
What, no one should use a rope to climb anything?
This kid climbed 8b sport routes, are you saying that doing this regularly without rope is a good idea? Climbing mountains and sport climbing aren't the same thing at all.
Le Roy Im not saying that sport cimbing isnt a useful skill for climbing mountains, but surely most mountains dont require the ability to do sport climbs at grades of 8a+ even though it may be very helpful. 8b sport routes are hard however good you are and only the best of the best should even really consider free soloing them.
I heard about a climber dying recently because he forgot to put a knot at the end of his rope, so no knot to stop him when he repelled to the end.
One wrong action/non-action in that world and you're dead or just severely hurt if you're lucky.
yes a combination of things always adds up to disaster. He should have checked and re-checked his gear.
Ignore all this because I am not smart right CHRISTOPHER...another gifted human I suppose
humans dont realize what your life is worth, its piceless.....
samuel rogers Whoa pump the brakes... The point of breaks are you don't work for a bit.
Damn... So sorry for the loss
Elizabeth Gaspodnetich What a dumbass comment.
The experience gained from the guy it happened to first didn't prevent this one.
I have seen a very similar mistake with hang gliding. The only thing holding him to his glider was a strip of velcro that came loose mid flight.
No piece broke that was made to take a fall.
Human error lead to failure of a piece that never was meant to be loaded.
ya and who would think to check. they probably assumed underthe rubber the carribeaner was thru the nylon strap.. i dont think its the instructors fault.. tito was smart enough to climb so he was smart enough to check his own gear too. but hard one
God Bless you Tito.
Getting close to death is the only way to feel alive! Respect to you all! now i must get back to my desk job...
That mistake is rediculoss. Did anyone even understand how climbing works? Mind boggling.
Sad!! Thank you for making this video though, at least others can become aware of the dangers in not double and triple checking their equipment and in not learning how to use it properly...
That's horrible. It's hard to comprehend how such an experienced climber could make such a rookie mistake.
Unbelievable. Ridiculous oversight by his belayer, coach, and parents.
Poor kid and his poor family, so tragic
Descanse en paz :(

When you're life is on the line always buy the best gear. Just because it's expensive doesn't mean it's good. And that goes for any activity.

Makes a lot of sense. Having equipment that's designed for quick release to look just like equipment designed to save your life.
Jake Jones theres nothing quick release about quickdraws...
its not the equipment. somebody assembled them with total idiocy.
A most terrible loss for the climbing community. It's unbelievable how basic forms of security like this are sometimes forgotten even at Tito's level of climbing. May Tito rest in peace.
rest in peace and may ur life be lived again in heven
I see from many the comments here that this tragedy came about because the childs gear was apparently not checked by other people? I would ask, if the boy was an experienced climber....he'd been climbing for around 4 years it appears.....why didn't he completely check his gear himself? And don't say at 12 he was too young....he was climbing for 4 years, must have realised that it could be dangerous and you would assume that he had been taught to check his own climbing gear. To be sure it is a tragedy, buy I think people shouldn't be trying to blame everyone else except the boy.
Someone somewhere is racked by guilt - the adult who was in charge of checking his equipment. Damn.
Not just wracked with guilt, charged with manslaughter by neglect as the child was with paid professional climbers in charge of the kid's safety.
Seems like an easy thing to overlook, ESPECIALLY when they came from the manufacturer that way.
@@harrymills2770 no it isn't. Any responsible instructor is going to make a meticulous examination of the equipment. Criminal negligence not to do that.
I'm a bit confused as to how he got to be such a great climber but wasn't taught how to check his pieces properly. Safety is always taught first. An experienced climber always checks his gear before and after every climb. It is not optional. Sad turn of evens for him.
Most likely a victim of his current surroundings and distractions.
Not climbing or mountain killed that kid but someones ignorrance that he climbed with a bad gear..
but he died climbing a mountain...
Imagine what FAs and epic climbs Tito would have done today. 12 yo 8b climber is beyond what I can imagine
What brand was the equipment?

SLINGS ARE only used to relieve friction between rope and rock and give clearance for small roofs etc. I don't get the rubber piece for quick draw. All slings should be sewn. and if you want quick draw put the biner in your mouth. you can find my climbing equipt. in a museum in Colorado. I have climbed with the best and done a lot of praying on climbs. sorry Samuel didn't read your post before i commented. i climbed with Warren Harding, Galen Rowell and Bill March.
demonetize the video for his honor. this is despicable.
What an absolutely insane horrible accident that didn’t need to happen!!!!
Years ago I wrote about young kids not doingsports that could possibly take your life. I was told by some people. (You could walk out your front door and get hit by a bus.) Those people didn't see their 25th Birthday. Still I believe in. Safety, safety and safety. Followed by some Extreme Caution.
Some of the comments on this are horrific. He may have died at 12 but many of you haven't climbed anything besides a set of stairs. People love this sport because it tests everything they have, it pushes them to the limit., and they do things most people can only dream about. Do you live life with mind blowing experiences, or do you simply spectate and watch it pass by....
Akasuna no Sasori I'd like my 10 year old son to carry on doing what he loves, which is climbing. If that involves a little risk then so be it, beats him getting obese by sitting on the sofa playing video games like the rest of his friends are.... Have you tested the limits of your mind, body, and soul? Yea, that is me. Who, are you?
beeroosterm Watch the video again as it explains why he died in the first 40 seconds, it wasn't due to a risky climb.
thepkeezy This is the generation of sofa lovers, watching T.V. playing computer games and facebook is enough risk for them. Bright side is we don't have to wait at the crag for them to finish ;)
akaAlexthekid Clearly you're making all my points for me. Any climb is a risk. There's no point in reasoning with you.
Why on earth would you design a piece of climbing equipment like that? Design fail 101.
I don’t think I could ever put my entire life in the hands of little clips.
I also don't understand how people feel safe by those tiny clips.
Carabiners are sturdy little machines, but this rubber band debacle needs to get remedied before another kid falls. Obviously the bands seem weight-bearing to some users.
But yet you put your life in the hands of your vehicle every single day and everyone else's vehicle who's driving,
I get vertigo standing at the BASE of the cliff looking UP! I've gotten myself stuck (can't go up, can't go down) just bushwacking as a kid. I didn't know I was in a situation until I couldn't go up and going back down was out of the question. I can't imagine rock climbing for recreation. I'd have to be pursued by certain death
@@DarrelltheWolf If you make sure you're 100% safe, you'll never have time to actually DO anything. Life is risk.

No, the way the gear was rigged by the purchaser.
+Dolan Kang i was under the impression it was a manufacturing failure.
+CVR IV : Definitely user error. The user didn't properly put the top biner through the nylon sling. I believe the manufacturer was held responsible for not providing safety instructions, but the parts would have worked if they were used correctly.

OMG ! SO HORRIBLY SAD .
If he was such a good climber then how come his entire rope was all fucked up? How do you get to that level without knowing how to tie your lines properly?????
The climber doesn't necessarily thread the slings dude. Someone did before went up and the sling broke and he hit the ground.
David Hoggan
Yeah but you gotta check that stuff.
Thats true, I think the whole thing was pretty big freak accident though.
+David Hoggan Why would a child be the first to embark across the wall? 2 of the instructors are facing manslaughter charges. They'd have surely noticed had they been the one to have been the first to go. There is no excuse for this. This is reckless negligence.
Why? This reminds me of
the recent Lear Jet slamming into the ground, because it was using something to bypass the safety rule with a workaround.
