Good Girl! I was a woman climber and spent a fair amount of my younger years bouldering at Joshua Tree in the western usa. Also loved Tuolumne Meadows in the eastern Sierras. But the one that really scared me was one of my days on Tahquitz Rock. The day I fell hard, and dislocated a shoulder, shattering a rotator cuff. Thought I was toast. In case you hadn't noticed the wall is not even high enough to sustain a serious injury. If she fell below the clip she would have been cought by the spotters, and if she fell above the clip she would have been cought by the rope. So you quite clearly don't understand... Stop getting so triggered
I've had two concussions. One kite boarding, and one skiing. I don't really want to know what my brain looks like. There's probably enough space in there for my car keys. It's called Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy, or CTE.
I am not a climber but I once climbed something with an experienced partner at Stanage edge. It was a long crack which I had to hand jam most of the way, somewhat higher than this route with an overhang at the very top. I made it through sheer brute force, but it put me off for ever. I wish I could remember the name of the route.
There's plenty of climbs where I've been pushing my grade and I've tuned into that sort of encouragement to overcome the primal part of your brain which is screaming at you - you're going to fall - you can't do this - this is too hard - why did you start - try and go back down etc etc. It's really hard sometimes to challenge that fear, from personal experience and silence can be good sometimes but other times it isn't. She is clearly Climbing with people she knows and trusts her life with.
chrismilesorg ...yeah right that’s why she fell how many times and wasn’t on belay in those moments, if there was no mat there and it was a leading climb at a Gragg and that happen probably broken legs or worse. She was emotion when she got to the top and it wasn’t because she was happy I think it was because she was glad to have made it alive she was at her limits , there’s a difference pushing yourself and others pushing you, one mistake is all it takes remember that.
If she had a helmet that would help me be less nervous and having the belay line connect more often so she would not have to fall on a pad only. Much props for her courage, strength and tenacity to get her self up on that rock.
@@climberly a helmet is for protecting your head from rocks falling from above you, it’s not meant to protect you in a fall, there’s no need for a helmet here
@@climberly i don’t disagree, this isn’t a route that requires helmets though, no loose debris on the wall and the shape of the rock is such that smashing your head in is pretty unlikely and helmets don’t come without their own disadvantages either, it’s always a trade off
Legend has it that she is still stuck on top of that rock and is too scared to climb back down since her 'coaches' all left. No one there to yell "Come on down!".
That guys needs to shut up at the bottom, utterly annoying not just for me but in no way did that help her. He says come on like every second its like give her a minute there is no rush.
Mina is NOT TRAD climbing this route. For all intents and purposes she is sport climbing, as the protection is ALREADY IN PLACE. When she gets to that crack and instead of two quickdraws already being there for her, she was placing her OWN protection in the crack and then clipping into it... THAT would be a trad ascent. BUT, the protection is already in place for her to lead this route so it is a SPORT CLIMB ascent that she just made. The same as if she was climbing a route and it was all bolted. Traditional climbing is placing your own protection as you climb when you actually have to examine the route, select appropriate gear to protect it, and execute the placement of that protection on your own. Some might argue this is splitting hairs, but there is a BIG physical and psychological difference between leading a climb with pre-placed gear and leading a climb and placing gear yourself. This comment is not meant to take away from her accomplishment, or to suggest that she did not face and overcome challenges on this climb.
After accidentally climbing a mixed route with sport climbing gear, I can definitely attest to the fear that overcomes you when you've run out the rope to the point of decking. Definitely our fault as a climbing party, and I'm glad I'm alright.
When i was first starting out, i NEEDED someone telling me things. "BREATHE. BREATHE" lol, like obviously i know but the constant reminder helps me not worry about the problem. I can always just BREATHE. Same for her im guessing. "come on!" is what she needs to hear.
Derek, clearly U MUST stay away from rocks for they are evil & climbing them is forbidden. U must stay home on the couch, safe, memorizing the bible. Then & only then will the eternal rewards of heaven be yours. coo coo- coo coo
@@jankaas2760 -- top climbers routinely leave the helmet at home unless it's a route with the risk of rockfall or a wild, swinging fall. is there some risk? sure. idk what to tell you.
@@feastmode7931 there always can be lose rocks that fall down but at this wall the chance would be low. But you have a decent chance, that you will hit your head when you fall so wear one anyway.
It's an audible reminder. If you're panicking on the side of a cliff face you're not thinking. It's a lot of mental power to break through those natural responses. A calm mind thinks clearer than a mind stuck in flight or fight mode.
That final toe placement was sketch I would assume due to the moisture. Seeing someone wipe their shoe mid climb always scares me. Much respect for the send!
***** Sorry for lecturing :), but nope, it's not "sturdier". Using a single carbiner (even one with a screw lock) is much worse than a direct tie-in. If you insist on using carabiners for tie-in, use two, with screw locks or some better safety, like the DMM "belay master". But why not just use a knot...
Great technical climbing--this is hard for sure. But two points need to be made. #1 this isn't a Trad climb if the gear is pre-placed, its effectively a sport climb. #2 the "Scary moment" wouldn't be if she had clipped the last piece from the great handhold at the top. I will never understand gritstone climbing. It's basically free-soling. To me it just seems dangerous and pointless. I won't argue the entertainment value though....
Although Mina is nothing of a trad climber, I do have to say when I see pre-placed gear I cringe a bit. Also, it seems that to climb hard on gritstone, you have to be at ease with the fact that 95% of the routes involve soloing at some point
Dylan Randall This is not at all to criticize her achievement. This is hard and maybe its not feasible to place the gear on lead--I'll grant that. It's only when she says at 2:05 that "It involves some trad climbing". That's really not correct. And had she not skipped the final clip the final move would have been a lot less scary.
Chrismzeller where was the final piece? she clipped the two mid route then ran it out to the top out, yes, but I couldn't see any gear when she was at the top... are you talking about the potential to place gear in the shallow seams to her right?
Generally it's the fear factor that is considered when choosing either a trad or a sport grade for a route. If a bolted route is safe, it gets sport grade, if it's not, it gets a trad grade. There are plenty of climbs in the N Wales slate quarries that are impossible to protect. Many are fully bolted and get sport grades, some however are partially bolted and get a trad grade - a 20m route with 2 bolts is hardly a safe sport climb. Taking time to place gear would definitely been harder than just clipping the pre-placed gear, you can't call it a sport route though
I heard like 20-30 times the phrase "come on Mina", especially in the most intense moments.. If I were in Mina's shoes it would be kind of annoying I guess
"Come on come on come on come on". Let hey follow her own rhythm unless she freezes out of fear, there's no reason to push that much. That was distracting.
These people are nuts to do this without ropes. Here what makes no sense, we have to wear seat belts to drive a car, by law, but they let people play with their lives and the lives of others by doing all kinds of things like this.
1. There is a rope. Pretty clearly, in fact. 2. Driving with a seatbelt is intended to limit personal liability in a crash. i.e. If you hit someone and kill them because they weren't wearing a seatbelt, you are potentially liable for more damages than you otherwise would have been. The law protects people's pockets. They don't really care if you die or not.
John Ellis Car manufacturers don't put in seat belts because they're concerned about potential damages payouts by the driver of the other car, that's not their concern, their concern is meeting standards to protect the lives of the drivers of the cars they have manufactured. Also, if a person isn't wearing a seatbelt in a car accident their damages payout would in fact decrease because of their own contributory negligence - it would be relatively easy to argue that person would be alive if they'd worn a seat belt and their payout would be reduced very significantly.
John Ellis I agree, they put seat belts in because they have to, if they didnt have to, they would not do it, as it cost them a whole 11 cents per car that they could save. The very fact that we have to set rules for those who produce consumer products, speaks loudly.
As you made the final moves, "in the back of your mind" you'd be thinking - has one of those idiots at the bottom picked up the rope and started to belay properly ? Give credit to the climber. It looked very hard and strenuous. Well done !
They’re trying make sure she remembers to clip the gear from the good hold higher up and not faff about trying to get it in early on worse holds - could slip off more easily - often when scared/ tired you forget this stuff and it’s handy to have someone shout at ya!
not an issue when free climbing! (...real free climbing...) that is only stupid, reckless endeavor I condone... I wear helmet on motorcycle, seat belt in car, face mask and social distant in stores. :)

Now is not the time to break her concentration ???
She had some great coaches! I don't think she would have known what to do if they weren't telling her to "keep climbing" every 2 seconds. I would have told them to shut up already if I were her.
You really dont know rock climbing in the UK do you. She most certainly appreciated their encouragement not coaching, even though they did have some tips that helped her out
Have you ever climbed and ended up half way stuck and started crying like a baby?
+Zachary Mainwaring How about you just go back to your video games or whatever it is you do. You obviously don't do anything irl that requires any sort of team effort or encouragement.
I would rather be on a team that cheers on its members than be a boring loner that pretends to be better than everyone else.

They should be wearing helmets... cuz brain damage is never cool.
Exactly
I've had two concussions. One kite boarding, and one skiing. I don't really want to know what my brain looks like. There's probably enough space in there for my car keys. It's called Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy, or CTE.
Helmets are a personal choice. Fuck off.
Are you speaking from experience? CUZ you sound like someone with Brain damage?
iatomatt no helmets : better chances to insta-death, no handicaps lol

I am not a climber but I once climbed something with an experienced partner at Stanage edge. It was a long crack which I had to hand jam most of the way, somewhat higher than this route with an overhang at the very top. I made it through sheer brute force, but it put me off for ever. I wish I could remember the name of the route.
One time I climbed Mt. Everest with a blindfold on. No big.
Nice i climbed it naked never got frost bite
Bruce Wayne I climbed it using just my fingers.
***** Best comment ^
So who kidded you that it was Mount Everest?
jagrcantakeyou I free solo'd Everest. No big.
Right? All these people in the comments being annoyed on her behalf. They never considered that perhaps she actually likes the encouragement.
chrismilesorg ...yeah right that’s why she fell how many times and wasn’t on belay in those moments, if there was no mat there and it was a leading climb at a Gragg and that happen probably broken legs or worse. She was emotion when she got to the top and it wasn’t because she was happy I think it was because she was glad to have made it alive she was at her limits , there’s a difference pushing yourself and others pushing you, one mistake is all it takes remember that.

Pat McCann indeed. You can feel the worry in their voice... not something I like to hear while climbing.
If she had a helmet that would help me be less nervous and having the belay line connect more often so she would not have to fall on a pad only. Much props for her courage, strength and tenacity to get her self up on that rock.
but -1 for not wearing a helmet.
@@climberly a helmet is for protecting your head from rocks falling from above you, it’s not meant to protect you in a fall, there’s no need for a helmet here
@@alexa3825 You say that, but I've seen stronger climbers than her flip while falling and bash their skull off the wall getting a concussion.
@@climberly i don’t disagree, this isn’t a route that requires helmets though, no loose debris on the wall and the shape of the rock is such that smashing your head in is pretty unlikely and helmets don’t come without their own disadvantages either, it’s always a trade off

She is so lucky. Most of us will not die while doing what we love.

Dumb ass comment
I've watched enough rock climbing videos to know the proper form of motivation is "come on"
Ale!
I like it when people cheer me on when I climb it keeps me motivated
Very informative and 100% correct, thank you.
Saves self from terrifying fall.. Doucher on belay, "COME ON!!!"
In the UK people say 'come on' as words of encouragement, its not rushing someone.
NL3044 Yea but it’s very distracting
One clip the whole climb, that's fun! I've know that sketchy feeling all too well. Good send!
That was amazing. Well done, Nina!
Agree!!!
im surprised no one has commented on the time stamp of the terrifying moment so here you go
5:26
youre welcome
I find myself holding my breath every time I watch these! I cant imagine what the climber must feel.
After accidentally climbing a mixed route with sport climbing gear, I can definitely attest to the fear that overcomes you when you've run out the rope to the point of decking. Definitely our fault as a climbing party, and I'm glad I'm alright.
Guys chill out with the encouragement. Just let the climber find their comfort zone.
Climbed here as a teenager in the early to mid sixties, we used to sleep in the cave. No doubt not be allowed now, some great fun was had. Happy days.

"Keep going up" very good advice
When i was first starting out, i NEEDED someone telling me things. "BREATHE. BREATHE" lol, like obviously i know but the constant reminder helps me not worry about the problem. I can always just BREATHE. Same for her im guessing. "come on!" is what she needs to hear.
far as anyone can tell she's still up there
Derek, clearly U MUST stay away from rocks for they are evil & climbing them is forbidden. U must stay home on the couch, safe, memorizing the bible. Then & only then will the eternal rewards of heaven be yours. coo coo- coo coo
Can we all just finally use the same grading system!?
Well I think trad needs to be different because of gear necessities
I love Vertical limit. Yes it's a movie but well done . Very scary beginning but accidents happen.Give it a watch.
"COME ON RELAX MINA!!!!"
Just confused as to why she isn't wearing a helmet...
because she's not in a situation where a helmet would benefit her.
feastmode
Because her head is indestructable or because the wall is made out of sponge cake?
@@jankaas2760 -- top climbers routinely leave the helmet at home unless it's a route with the risk of rockfall or a wild, swinging fall. is there some risk? sure. idk what to tell you.
@@feastmode7931 there always can be lose rocks that fall down but at this wall the chance would be low.
But you have a decent chance, that you will hit your head when you fall so wear one anyway.

“Reallly pull hard” ahahaha
A lot of non-climbers commenting on stuff they don't understand and that ain't their business. A great climb with a great support crew.
"Relax" while I'm yelling at you.
It's an audible reminder. If you're panicking on the side of a cliff face you're not thinking. It's a lot of mental power to break through those natural responses. A calm mind thinks clearer than a mind stuck in flight or fight mode.
Not impressed with the fools at the bottom.
@@Peter-ff1tp handpicked douchebags
That final toe placement was sketch I would assume due to the moisture. Seeing someone wipe their shoe mid climb always scares me. Much respect for the send!
the rope is tie to the harness thanks to a carabiner! WTF
Yeah, what's with that? Why not simply tie in?
Calm down. They were swapping the rope between people, quickest way so they don't have to untie.
Nick Brown Crap reason! How long to untie/retie?
*****
Sorry for lecturing :), but nope, it's not "sturdier". Using a single carbiner (even one with a screw lock) is much worse than a direct tie-in. If you insist on using carabiners for tie-in, use two, with screw locks or some better safety, like the DMM "belay master". But why not just use a knot...
Bernd Schuller but when was the last time a locking biner came off a belay loop? thousands of people do it everyday at climbing gyms.
That was very scary glad you made it.
The guys talking to her is an increased difficulty.
bloody clickbait
Some of those pinch holds are insanely tough

I know. They shouldn't make people wear seat belts.
THey are nuts to do this without ... lets say ... HELMET ?
As you made the final moves, "in the back of your mind" you'd be thinking - has one of those idiots at the bottom picked up the rope and started to belay properly ?
Give credit to the climber. It looked very hard and strenuous. Well done !
HELMET! HELMET!! HELMET!!! HELMET!!!!

"Keep going up, Nina."
Duh.
They’re trying make sure she remembers to clip the gear from the good hold higher up and not faff about trying to get it in early on worse holds - could slip off more easily - often when scared/ tired you forget this stuff and it’s handy to have someone shout at ya!
It was scary. Very nice video
