    CLIP DESCRIPTION:
    Celeste (Sally Field) and Rose (Whoopi Goldberg) protest David's (Robert Downey Jr.) changes to the shooting script while he tinkers with a remote control truck.
    FILM DESCRIPTION:
    In the comedic farce Soapdish, the behind-the-scenes lives of several soap opera actors are just as melodramatic as those of their television counterparts. Sally Field stars as Celeste Talbert, the star of a declining TV show. To make matters worse, Talbert's career is thrown into turmoil when her rival, Montana Moorehead (Cathy Moriarty), tries to persuade producer David Barnes (Robert Downey Jr.) to write Talbert off the show. Smitten by Moorehead, Barnes comes up with a scheme to get Talbert off the show by hiring her niece Lori (Elisabeth Shue) and then Jeffrey (Kevin Kline), an old flame and cast member who was written out of the show 20 years prior. Soon, mayhem rules on the set as the cast and crew tangle, culminating in a special episode, broadcast live.

    How in the name of God is that possible?!?!?! Her dramatic delivery of that line, as if it's some major crisis, (as opposed to just a plot line in a soap), is hilarious.

    In 2022 and as a writer, this scene popped into my head after being told to write a character back into a story that clearly wouldn't make sense. I'm 34 years old explaining this movie and why I remember it from my childhood when I was clearly too young to watch this. But its still funny and I feel this on a level in so many ways

      Don't you hate it? Studio rewrites, questionable changes, production notes, bringing back dead characters? Why though? Perfectly derailing an already good(great one, maybe)screenplay with hobnob and whatnot that was never needed!!

    This film is a classic American comedy, right up there with "Some Like It Hot", "Tootsie", and "The Philadelphia Story". But Celeste should have remembered that the casting of the parents of adult children, on TV or in film, has often simply ignored chronological reality. Eileen Herlie, who played Hamlet's mother Queen Gertrude opposite Laurence Olivier in the 1948 "Hamlet" film was, in reality, eight years YOUNGER than Olivier. Angela Lansbury was almost the same age as Laurence Harvey when she played his mother Mrs. Iselin in the original "The Manchurian Candidate". (Otherwise known as "the real one").

    • @zmani4379
      @zmani4379 2 роки тому +1

      Very true - and I agree this film belongs in the ranks of those classics - the thing that's so funny about this film, though, is that none of these characters actually cares about "realism" - except maybe Goldberg - despite the pious way they invoke "realism" as a higher principle, they're really just totally absorbed in themselves
      - and what Celeste is responding to here isn't the realism, it's the politics - she knows her prominence is tied to her image as a "romantic lead" and she's defending this fiercely, as is her writer - and she's also aware this decision to make her the mother is part of efforts behind the scenes to push her out or marginalize her by framing her as "older"
      - so the whole exchange is a game - they both know this is really about politics, but they won't say this directly; the rationalizing is like a shield - until she breaks down and says "you can't turn me into a grandmother - I still have my looks" - like an employee protesting being demoted
