@Triple X It wasn't just jokes (which were masterfully crafted by the way). The whole point of the character was to shine a giant light on how bad it was for the practice of blackface/casting non-POC as characters who are POC/replacing the existing POC character with a white character. They even specifically pointed it out in the movie (through the actual black character in the crew) for the slow folks who didn't understand that. He's constantly mocking, trolling and condescending to him in scenes like this, only to finally respect him at the end when he sees how "method" he has gone with the Simple Jack role. That's actually a pretty good character arc amid all the jokes and craziness in this movie.

He takes the craft seriously while Tugg can still step away and recognize that it is just a role. It’s also worth noting that Tugg primarily played the same character for most of his career as opposed to dozens of different roles.

Two of the greats here. I know RDJ is amazing, but no one does awkward/squirming humour better than Ben Stiller, he's the perfect embarrassed guy. Something about Mary, Meet the Parents and this are just gold.
Yes even against Heath Ledger. That's not to say he did a great job as the Joker but I think RDJ knocked it out of the park in Tropic Thunder. I wonder if Heath got the votes because he died. It would have been great for a comedy to get an Oscar for once.
Alex Summers Lol have you seen The Dark Knight? There's no way he got the votes just because he died. He gave one of the best single man performances of all time, one that would make even Daniel Day Lewis clap.
Yes I agree he was good in it I just think RDJ was better. I also think it's a close race. RDJ was playing an Aussie, playing a black guy, playing an Asian guy. And he pulled it off! Also a black friend of mine told me that he fell for RDJ being black especially in the scene where RDJ takes the map from Ben Stiller.
Alex Summers Listen I know RDJ dominated this role and I do believe comedy needs more respect from the Oscars. That said there is no competition. TDK Joker was a masterpiece from start to finish, it had nothing to do with his death. That was hall of fame. needs to be remembered forever kind of acting. I understand you have your personal opinion but I feel like the Joker shouldnt even be under question.

@Rich8927 That's why we bought into the equal rights movement in the '70s and '80s. Believed the ultimate goal was for the culture to become colorblind. Obviously, that wasn't the goal.

-And now.... we will introduce you to the new T'Challa....
(Robert takes off T'Challa's mask)
I watched this as a kid thought it was funny. Watching now as an adult, it’s frickin art man.
It’s high science
A lot of movies you loved as a kid you just eye roll at as an adult. This one just keeps aging better
Probably because you’re an ignorant individual
Robert Downey is one of the best actors to ever exist 😂
He's my favourite black actor
One time he was trash
@@jussikankinen9409 trash? Because he was an addict? He was always a great actor. I think it’s clear who the trashy one is.
@@jussikankinen9409at least he’s better than you, dog dung

I love the line, "He's a goddamn war hero. You know any retarded war heroes?"
FallaciousScotsman im your 100th like
I don't actually
Love the way Stiller reflects on this 😂
It’s a damn shame this is RDJ’s only comedy role. He’s absolutely hilarious when given the chance, down to every single delivery. I bet he can make an Amy Schumer joke funny.
That's saying something.
I've never once laughed at anything Amy Schumer has said, not even in a roast.
Same with Tom Cruise. Who woulda thought. Great comedians both.
Accept Due Date.
Literally everyone in this movie was amazing.. but it had like all kinds of top actors.. I mean this cast is crazy
Kiss Kiss Bang Bang was a comedy too and that came out 4 years before this one. That film helped revive his career.
As a black man I promise you none of us are offended by this..this is epic on every level ..idk who claimed we were mad at this but that is completely BS...yall believe anything lmaoo..ask any black person if they're offended by this. This is genius..made me love Robert Downey Jr

This YOUNG BLACK WOMAN doesn't deserve to have her career ended over RACISM; she's just an ARTIST doing her JOB.

It is

Robert Downey, Jr. made this movie.
Just like he seems to make every movie he's in these days.
***** Man, he's had a great comeback lately, hasn't he?
He's definitely a "comeback" story. The man turned his life around BIG time. And the world rejoiced.
Tom Cruise threatening the asians is one of the funniest scenes.
*****
the whole Ben Stillers character a spoof of the real Tom Cruise-action hero--get it Speedman/Cruise and then Tom playing Grossman and berating Stiller as himself-f-cking genius--apple bottom jeans--whoop whoop-actual got Mr. Cruise some respect
RDJ's "Damn" just kills me every single time.
My favourite line of Sgt. Lazarus is "Wherever he is? He's all over tha place!"

I know. The first time I read the cast of this movie and I saw the name "Robert Downey Jr", I was like "What? He did appear in the movie? Why can I not see him?"
the same thing to me 😀
Craig he did get nominated though...
this is in my opinion Robert Downey Jr's greatest role
“He was got damn war hero” 😂😂😂😂

It’s still weird to look at why does he have to have black face just cast a a black person

John Travolta should have seen this, before doing The Fanatic.
Never go full regal.
This should be top comment.
I hadn't heard of it, so I looked up The Fanatic. A 17% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Written and directed by Fred Durst (?), Travolta plays Moose, an autistic murderous stalker "who spends his time furiously rocking back and forth and bellowing to the heavens." Rifftrax will hopefully get ahold of this gem someday!

And Lazarus never broke character till he did the DVD commentary!! Classic.
Geez, RDJ was paid a massive discount price at this point of his career and STILL pulled off one of the most convincing performances ever.
It wasn't a discount. He was bouncing back from being an unreliable drug addict. He got what he deserved and turned it around.
I don't care what anyone says I think Robert Downey Jr. deserved the Oscar for this movie! Go RDJ!
Against Heath Ledger?
