The incredible truth is: if Pierce hadn't pulled this off so well and breathed life into the franchise, this literally would have been the end of the character in film. Instead he supercharged it.

Exactly, I remember that between 1989 and 1995, the franchise was on the verge of crisis, no more james bond was released in the cinema, they were struggling to breathe new life into the saga since the departure of Sir Roger Moore.Timoty Dalton was too average and did not have the expected success and pierce brosnan was the last chance to restart the machine, and bingo, big success

A guy actually bungee jumped off that dam, risked his own life, and broke a world record by doing so. Nowadays that would have all been done with CGI. What an incredible stunt and perhaps the best Bond opening sequence ever

But you can't deny Casino Royale intro where they hired a world class parcore to do all those stunts for real. And the physicality of Craig was something all bonds openly admitted to be impressed by in interviews.

@@juliusraben3526 this movie is the first bond film to be set after the cold War. This scene takes place in 1986 while the events of the rest of the movie took place in 1995. The scenes in Russia shows the soviet era architecture and stuff being dismantled and mafia groups (like Valentin zukhovsky) becoming powerful and influential. This is exactly how Russia acted in the early years of post sovietism, particularly in the mid 1990s when russian mob groups really began to increase.
In real life Boris Yeltzin only officially abolished soviet era uniforms for russian troops after signing a declaration in 1994, 3 years after the USSR. This took a while to fully happen though, and many auxiliary forces still kept using soviet era uniforms for a few years after the abolishment. Most of the uniform upgrading was prioritized to troops stationed in the frontlines of hot zones like Dagestan and whatnot. It makes sense that even in 1995 you'd see russian troops stationed safely within the country that were still wearing soviet outfits

Quite possibly the best opening for a James Bond movie ever!!! People forget that prior to this, it wasn't known for sure if James Bond would continue, as there hadn't been a Bond film in 6 years due to legal disputes and the cold war had ended causing some to question whether Bond could still be relevant in the post cold war world. So glad they kept with it because like many, this film holds a very special place in my heart.

I think the setup with Trevelyan supposedly being killed wasn't just to cover up his involvement with Janus - it was also a test for Bond.
If Bond surrendered for Trevelyan's life, Trevelyan would have seen that Bond was more loyal to his friends than the mission, and would have let him in on the secret.
Since Bond allowed Trevelyan to be "killed", this confirmed to Trevelyan that Bond couldn't be trusted, and needed to be eliminated.

He understands that they need to finish the job so he reduces the timer to 3 minutes, not nearly enough time to free Alec and escape. You can tell what is going through his mind for the brief pause after he reduces the timer and drops the AK. I see it as he has assessed the current situation with the expectancy that they would both be captured or executed so takes the actions to assure that the mission is completed, even at the cost of both of their lives. Ourumov's fast count and "execution" probably surprised Bond so he retreated to buy time. Bond being resourceful, notices the canister trolley goes for it and it pays dividends.

Ouromov could have also tried to kill James while chasing the plane by firing and getting a lucky shot, but he just kept ordering his men to hold their fire and smile as he escapes. The quiet, almost ambient music when the two 00s are sneaking around which then turns intense when the alarm goes off which then turns even more intense when the Colonel Orumov walks in, only cut by a dense silence when 006 is captured and 007 seemingly surrounded that then intensifies once again when 007 escapes before almost fading out for the intense airplane takeover.
    Excellent use of soundtrack, 10/10.

Damn... 6:08-6:10 is a rare moment 007 shows fear. Your with your friend and fellow agent, doing very dangerous missions like they are used to, but all of a sudden everything goes to hell. Your friend is captured, executed in front of you, and you are left surrounded and it seems like there is no escape. That is a lot to process in a very short time for a person. Despite all of Bond's advanced training and experience, it goes to show you that he is still human and can revert emotionally to that of a scared little kid, even if only for a few seconds. Now imagine what real operatives in the field go through / have to think about.

sorry to revive an old thread but even cooler how despite the fear and emotion, he processes Orimov's command to his men: "don't shoot or you'll blow the gas tanks" so Bond knows he can use the trolly with the cannisters to maneuver. So awesome.

This moment always confused me when I saw this film as a kid. I distinctly remember that you weren't supposed to kill any of the scientists during this mission. The only explanation that I could think of at the time was that this was meant to foreshadow the revelation that Alec was the main villain.

Brosnans bond and Craigs are very different. Both are great.
Brosnans bond is more direct and charming yet very strong in the way that it reflates this huge period for the action genre that where the 90s and 80s. But unfortunately for him, the movies went down in quality as they progressed.
Craigs is more uneven. Directing and cinematography makes for a lot of his charisma. Story structure as well. I mean CR and Skyfall are masterpiece and rank amongst the best bond movies ever made for many. Just as Goldeneye did back in the day for Brosnan. It

necroplastful I guess you have to ask yourself who you are able to relate to best. I think you are right about the different periods that Brosnan and Craig represent, and that Brosnans era had the emphasis on action. That’s not to say that Craig’s movies aren’t dynamic, but for me there is a kind of surface coldness, a distance. Craig’s Bond fits perfectly.

_GoldenEye_ is such a great movie! It has great actors and actresses, with an interesting story and characters that have great character arcs! I love the overall tone of this film too! The Russian Cyrillic and the details with late Soviet-era to (later) Russian settings alone really add a lot to this film! Even the props, stunts, effects, and miniatures look good for a movie from this time period! I love the soundtracks too! The music is so perfectly fitting for this film! And, don't get me started on _GoldenEye 007,_ the _N64_ game! It is the best overall action, FPS, and multiplayer game for the _N64,_ in my honest opinion! Man, I miss 1995!
